Kształty pamięci. Wybrane zagadnienia sztuki współczesnej

Author(s): Eleonora Jedlińska / Language(s): Polish

The present publication, containing fourteen essays dedicated to selected artists and their work, is a structurally cohesive analysis of the phenomenon of memory of World War II experiences and the Holocaust – of trauma reflected in works of art. The works of Władysław Strzemiński, Barnett Newman, Marek Rothko, Tadeusz Kantor, Moshe Kupferman, Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, Marek Chlanda, Luc Tuymans, Zofia Lipecka, Rafał Jakubowicz and Elżbieta Janicka have been showcased. The artists presented in the volume – born around the end of the nineteenth century, during the war as well as in the 1970s – focused on an issue which became fundamental in the 20th- and 21st century art: the memory of the Holocaust catastrophe and its impact on the lives of generations born after the war. It is a book indicating the value and necessity of the existence of art, poetry and music against constant attempts to face the past, the most distant, ancient, so that this measure can translate – in the final analysis – into finding a meaning in anything precious that has survived, which in itself creates, in Benjamin Buchloh’s words, a “model of historical memory and continuity of experience.” The book’s target audience are people interested in contemporary art, wondering about the condition of man in the current reality – readers whose concern is an attempt to protect memory and rethink history.

Kultura muzyczna ewangelików na Śląsku Cieszyńskim w pierwszej połowie XVIII wieku. T. 1: Rys historyczny z wybranymi materiałami źródłowymi

Author(s): Zenon Mojżysz / Language(s): Polish

The discovery of unknown musical manuscripts in the archives of the Church of Jesus in Cieszyn (Teschen) in 2008 was an impulse to conduct comprehensive scientific research. In the light of these studies, the eighteenth-century Cieszyn appears to be one of the main centers of Protestant musical culture in Silesia, radiating throughout Upper Silesia and its neighboring regions. From 1710, despite many difficulties, Cieszyn cantors managed to create a thriving vocal and instrumental ensemble and provide a musical setting for celebrations and services at a high artistic level. The so-called "Cieszyn cantatas", the surviving works from the then repertoire, are living testimony to this fascinating chapter in the history of music.

Jak wyjaśnić obraz?

Author(s): Stanisław Czekalski / Language(s): Polish

The book provides a synthesis of the methodological issues in art history as a discipline that in the 20th century chose the methodical and objective explanation of images as one of its main tasks. Since the time when W. Dilthey's methodology distinguished the humanities, the most eminent art historians have sought to strengthen its position among these sciences by relying on the rigors of scientific objectivity and empiricism, accuracy and correctness, verifiability and cognitive certainty, in line with the natural science model. Can and if so how can an interpretation come closer to the explanatory model, and how can it fulfill the role of a historical explanation of the works of painting? How should it be based on the solid ground of facts and the logic of inferences? What research methodologies can ensure the correctness of explanations, verifiability and the accuracy of the results? Such methodological issues were connected with the reflections of a number of scholars. Among whom E. Gombrich played a special role, first as a spokesman for the turn in iconology towards Popper’s deductionism, and then as an inspiration and point of reference for the next generation of academics, some of whom followed the rigors of normative methodology, while others looked for alternatives or developed a narrative methodology. The book presents significant relationships linking methodologically oriented art history not only with various concepts of general methodology and the philosophy of science, but also with another important source of inspiration, namely the models of inference used by detectives in crime novels.

O sztuce na Titanicu

Author(s): Iwona Lorenc / Language(s): Polish

The book explores the entanglements of modern art resulting from the condition of late postmodernism. It is written in the form of a “lively”, formally open, philosophical and artistic dialogue, whose participants – a philosopher and a philosophizing artist – draw on selected examples of artistic practices to discuss the artistic strategies and philosophical problems which shape the field of today’s art. They analyze in depth a number of phenomena in modern art, and by relating them to philosophical interpretative contexts, throw light on a wide range of subjects. Maintaining due care for scholarly method, they go beyond traditional “treatise-monologue” forms of philosophical expression so as to make the book more appealing and approachable for a wider audience of readers interested in both art. And the humanities.

Author(s): Małgorzata Leyko / Language(s): Polish

The book consists of fifteen studies and sketches written over the past two decades and devoted to the twentieth century German theatre and Austrian drama. The publication consists of three parts. The first includes sketches on Max Reinhardt's theatre – his mass theatre against the backdrop of the spectacle festive culture in Germany in the 19th-20th centuries, the organization of the theatre companies he owned, and the director's strategies used in Shakespearean productions. In addition, there is a sketch on the Polish reception of Reinhardt's theatre and an article on Pola Negri's roles in the pantomime and the film “Sumurun”. The second block consists of texts on the work of Oskar Schlemmer – his stage explorations, the idea of the new man present in his works and thought, and on contemporary reconstructions of his works. The third block consists of articles on the medium of film in the theatre of Erwin Piscator, two dissertations on the dramaturgy of Friedrich Wolf, a sketch tracking the emigration history of Reinhardt, Piscator and Brecht, and an analysis of the post-war reception of Brecht's plays in Poland. The next texts discuss more recent works – Pina Bausch's dance theatre performance and the dramas by Gert Jonke and Peter Turrini. With reference to one of Turrini's plays discussed, the book closes with an analysis of Johann Nestroy's local farce “On the Ground and First Floors”. All of the studies and sketches included here have previously been published in journals or collective volumes, but when put together they show one important aspect of the author's research interests.

The monograph also strives to point out parallels in the life and work of both composers, whether it is emigration, Europeanism, humanism or the relationship to folk music and theater. The book, which is published on the 100th anniversary of Jan Novák’s birth, seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the work of this important composer, who was sentenced to compulsory collective amnesia due to emigration.

Mé celoživotní janáčkování: Hovory nejen o hudbě

Author(s): Miloš Štědroň,Jiří Hanuš / Language(s): Czech

This book is more than just a history of Janáček's music; it is a full-blooded testimony of a man of wisdom, a man of infallible intuition, a man who enjoys life, a man who approaches his world in a way that seeks to understand all its apparent or real paradoxes of the past century. Miloš Štědroň responds to Jiří Hanuš's questions about Leoš Janáček, Czech music and the emerging Czech identity with a charm that is difficult to replicate. There is a flow to his thoughts, and they are arranged in rapid succession, as if unconsciously captured in a private conversation. In this way he bridges the gap between the language of the profession and the language of everyday life.

Young Poland is one of the most popular periods of our history of arts. It is evidenced by a multitude of scientific studies, artists’ monographs, exhibitions, albums. Looking further, however, one might notice countless white spots, forgotten or yet undiscovered phenomena, especially outside of the mainstream of “big names” and important centres. Immeasurable as of yet, field of marginalia requires constant exploration, profound look into then popular painting, social and economic functioning of the world of arts (including graphics and architecture), writing of creators that are not necessarily considered critics or art theoreticians till this day.

Milý příteli Bureši: Dopisy Bohuslava Martinů Miloslavu Burešovi / Dear friend Bureš: Bohuslav Martinů´s Letters to Miloslav Bureš

Author(s): Vít Zouhar,Gabriela Coufalová / Language(s): English,Czech

The monograph documents the preserved correspondence between the composer Bohuslav Martinů and the poet Miloslav Bureš. It represents a unique testimony to their having working together on four cantatas: Opening of the Springs, The Legend of the Smoke from Potato Tops, A Dandelion Romance and Mikesh from the Mountains. Furthermore, it serves to document the sheer difficulties of communication between East and West in the second half of the 1950s. This period picture is supplemented and extended by the correspondence Martinů and Bureš conducted with other addressees, which duly reveals other meanings and nuances of that which the two artists communicated to each other.

Akt obrazu

Author(s): Horst Bredekamp / Language(s): Polish

The first Polish translation of the "Image Acts", written by Horst Bredekamp, professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin, an art historian specialising in the theory of the image, political iconology and scientific imagery. In the publication, illustrated with about 200 reproductions of artworks and iconographic sources, the author defines the impact of the image on human feelings, thinking and actions. He offers the reader a reflection on how the recipient's self-perspective transforms itself into an interaction between the recipient himself and the world that meets him. This process, according to the author, occurs in three dimensions: schematic – as a result of imitation of gestures, poses and image formulas, substitutive – as an exchange between the image and the body, and autonomous – as the inner force of the influence of the form itself.
