Summary/Abstract: The author presents architectural and spatial changes of university complexes in Europe and North America, from the Middle Ages, when colleges used mainly monastic designs, until the mid-19th century, when university architecture became an embodiment of the political order introduced after the Napoleonic wars and the ambition of new national states. She shows the most important buildings and architectural complexes and describes major cultural transformations leading to the changes in the form of college buildings.
