Езиковата бележка като лингвистичен жанр

Author(s): Vladislav Milanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2022

The article is devoted to the topic of the language note as a linguistic genre. The actuality of the problem is motivated by the fact that so many linguistic notes have already been accumulated that they need to be described and structured; they represent the entire topical diversity of the linguistic levels; the texts of the language notes reflect current issues and are aimed at the needs of society. Although short in length, they unfold many problems of the modern Bulgarian language in full, and orient modern language speakers in the dynamics of language development. In the text, an attempt has been made to generally distribute the problems in the topical groups of the language notes: phonetic and speech problems, lexical and word-formation problems, morphological problems, problems of syntax and word order; stylistic inaccuracies, which are subject to comment in the language notes. Peculiarities related to the headings of the language notes in historical and contemporary terms are also commented upon.

Antonymy in English and Bulgarian Maritime Terminology

Author(s): Galina Velikova / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2022

This paper dwells on maritime terminology and the relationships defining “oppositeness of meaning” in it. It briefly retraces some theoretical assumptions in the sphere of antonymy and offers a classification of antonyms from a morphological and semantic point of view. The examples given are excerpted from documented materials standardized and consistent within the area of shipping and discussed and systematized using the lexico-semantic method. The findings in this study can be applicable when teaching English maritime terminology.

Pitch Variation for Chinese Syllables of Different Information Load (Based on Commercial and Social Radio Ads)

Author(s): Svetlana V. Androsova,Veronika Karavaeva,Zianwen Zhang / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2022

F0 is an important cue present in all vocalic segments, a parameter to differentiate between voiced and voiceless consonants, a relative phonological feature of syllable in tonal languages and a crucial feature of intonation. This paper aims to investigate pitch variation patterns in Mandarin Chinese depending on the syllable information load (Factor 1) in one type of discourse – advertising with the subdivision into social and commercial ads (Factor 2) considering gender differences (Factor 3). 1249 syllable tokens were selected for acoustic measurements, each syllable occurring twice – in the informative and uninformative utterance parts. The information load was determined perceptually: the syllable was considered informative when agreed by the minimum of 60% of listeners, other syllables were considered uninformative. Depending on lexical tone (T1 – T4 and T0), the measurements included average pitch values, declination/inclination starting and ending points (mean values). These parameters were used to judge about relevant pitch features – average height and declination/inclination slope. As a result, a consistent parameter increase in commercial ads vs. social ads and on informative syllables vs. uninformative ones was observed for all tones except T0 that showed the opposite trend in expressing information-based partition. Another finding was tone substitution that marked both informative and uninformative parts but was more frequent in the latter. Substitute tone frequency ranks did not depend on any of the three factors except for T0. High predictability of pitch variation patterns make them applicable in teaching Chinese as L2 in terms of speaking and listening for general and specific purposes.

Диалектни наименования на пролетните месеци в българския език

Author(s): Vladislav Milanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2022

The article is dedicated to an understudied issue in Bulgarian dialectology, namely the names of the months in different Bulgarian dialects. Some specific names of the spring months of March, April and May are examined, tracing the specific marks and processes characteristic of the daily life of the dialect speaker, which lie as a motivating base in the meaning of the words. It is clear from the research that most of the names of the spring months are characteristic of the entire linguistic territory, but there are also some more specific names that reflect activities specific to the calendar time and to the daily life of the dialect speaker. Such phenomena, holidays and various domestic and economic processes are associated with a reference to the women's holiday in the month of March and the changeable weather; with the greening of nature, with the Easter holidays and with the shearing of the sheep in the month of April; with St. George's Day, with the digging of corn and with the first cherries - in the month of May. Keywords dialect vocabulary, names of the spring months in the dialects, lexical wealth of the Bulgarian dialects.

Авторът за себе си. Литературни автопортрети

Author(s): Margarita Serafimova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2022

The article puts the spotlight on those specific genres in which the author returns to the process of writing of his works, creating a kind of “bioliterature”. Seemingly seeking for the biographical projections of creativity, in fact the author turns the writing itself into intrigue. In the form of essays, interviews, commentaries, and other “epitexts” (Genette), the author blurs the boundary that connects and separates the text on the one hand and its interpretations on the other. Thereby, he takes the work out of its fictional world and gives it performativity, assigning it a role in the real life. Thus, while speaking and writing about his works, the author draws his self-portrait as well. This conscious and purposeful authorial representation shows the way the author sees himself, his work, but it also hints the care for the image he wants to leave for posterity.

Creative Reflection

Author(s): Janneke Camps / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2022

In our floral industry trend is a very important factor. As a university we are very aware of this phenomenon. Design and trends are always moving and changing and we have built this into the teaching program that we offer. We take the students for excursions to visit trend stock marketing, closely follow trend watchers, keeping an eye on the trends of fashion and living. But we have also developed assignments where students do research for innovation at their internship. So we know how to deal with these changes and to prepare students for this phenomenon. In this paper I would like to put forward how and if we can develop mental development and mental flexibility by using creative reflection and thereby preparing students for a fast world. At this moment we already do train the students to look differently to plant material and technique, in another way of designing and how to make choices. It’s important to distinguish oneself as a florist at this high level (level 5 and level 6) in the floral industry. It’s important to move with trends and have an innovative authentic vision of floral design.

Changes in the Experience of Stuttering Following Intensive Prolonged Speech and Non-Avoidance Treatments

Author(s): Dobrinka Georgieva,J. Scott Yaruss,Rositsa Stoylova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to apply a multidimensional comprehensive instrument to evaluate the overall impact of stuttering (OASES-A)from the perspective of adults who stutter (AWS) who completed one of two intensive stuttering therapies: The La Trobe prolonged speech program and Van Riper’s non avoidance approach. Methods: The OASES-A was applied to evaluate participants’ perceptions of their experience of stuttering with the specific aim of compare the changes in the experience of stuttering following two intensive treatments. An essential element in post-treatment evaluation are changes in the speaker’s self reported quality of life. Results: OASES-A group results regarding the La Trobe and Van Riper intensive treatment outcomes show positive changes in stuttering experience for 27 AWS in four sections: 1) general information on stuttering; 2)reactions to stuttering; 3) communication in daily situations; and 4) quality of life. Conclusions: The article represents the first English-language documentation ofthe Bulgarian results of OASES-A application of previously conducted intensive treatments. OASES-A outcomes show significantly greater overall improvement and changes in the four sections that relate to the experience of stuttering following two intensive treatments. As a research-based instrument for assessment of quality of life in AWS, the OASES-A was easy to administer and analyze. The OASES-A describes in substantial detail the experience and influence that stuttering exerts on quality of life from the client’s perspective. Its application was preferred because it assists speech-language pathology Master’s degree students to recognize the speech needs, abilities, preferences, and interests of AWS.

Литература, написана от българи в чужди страни през първите две десетилетия на XXI век

Author(s): Milena Kirova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The article provides a panoramic overview of novels written in the first two decades of the 21st century by authors of Bulgarian origin who live abroad. At the start, the article discusses various choices of defining this literature: from emigrant (an already inappropriate term) through immigrant and migrant – to anew term proposed by Steven Kellman, translingual literature. Then, based on extensive information on dozens of authors and works from different countries across the world, a thematic typology is brought forth. It includes such strandsas “our totalitarian past”, Bulgaria today, immigrant life from within, novels with ecological themes, fantasy reads. The article highlights specific approaches that dominate the works of authors with Bulgarian roots: autofiction, social satire, political grotesque, etc. It concludes with a summary of the presence, the preferences, and the achievements of these authors.

Безотцовщина/безматерщина

Author(s): Lyudmil Dimitrov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The text attempts to conceptualize the four late plays of A. P. Chekhov– “The Seagull”, “Uncle Vanya”, “Three Sisters” and “The Cherry Orchard”, written between 1895 and 1904, as a cycle. The common places and problems in them are noted with the following regularity: once introduced, a given motif is not limited to the relevant drama in which it appears, but is reinterpreted until it exhausts its possibilities. In this sense, the article suggests the dramatical strategies of the mature Chekhov, betting on themes and characters with serious poetic potential, forming a recognizable, precisely Chekhovian macroplot. The semiotic centerin it is fatherlessness, understood not so much as the absence of the father and, respectively, the disintegration of the patriarchal community, but also as destitution, uncertainty, pathlessness, lack of a stable perspective and the related fears for the upcoming – near or more distant – ruin. However, the missing father is not at all compensated by the presence of the mother – on the contrary, the primal matriarchy in which the Russian mythological mentality resides is also denied.
