“GIRL, WOMAN, OTHER” BY BERNARDINE EVARISTO VERSUS ”THE WAVES” BY VIRGINIA WOOLF

Comparing “Girl, Woman, Other” by Bernardine Evaristo to Virginia Woolf’s most experimental novel proved to be a challenging endeavor. The highlights of this brief study are the characters telling their stories – objectively by means of a narrative voice or by using the free indirect style – but also the linguistic component, and the readers’ potential response. The conclusion is that, even though some common traits were discovered, a close association of the two novels would be far-fetched. In a span of eighty-eight years, from 1931 to 2019, marking the publications of the two novels, literature has moved on, society has greatly changed, authors have become louder mouthpieces of their communities.

MYTHS, FAIRY TALES, LEGENDS, AND THE FORMATION OF THE ROMANIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY DURING THE 19th CENTURY

Romanian fairy tales, stories and myths came to the attention of writers, especially since the second half of the nineteenth century, in the era of the great classics, Junimea and the beginnings of the Romanian Academy. Highly active in collecting fairy tales and then in transcribing them in the form of cult fairy tales were: Ioan Gh. Sbiera, Vasile Alecsandri, Alexandru Odobescu, Mihai Eminescu, Ioan Slavici, Ion Luca Caragiale, Nicolae Filimon, Ion Creangă and Petre Ispirescu. Folk tales and stories were collected from all regions of the country, transposed in a form easily accessible to the general public, but still continuing to retain a local air, popularized en masse by the written press and by the introduction to the curriculum. In this way they managed, in less than a generation, to spread en masse the consciousness of unity, language and customs of Romanians from all regions of the country. The fundamental myths, beyond the message of the literary text, usually transmit a hidden, cryptic message, this being in full agreement with the western tradition! If we look closely we notice that three of the four myths chosen to become fundamental myths of the Romanian nation represents, in a kind of allegorical triptych, the main steps in the evolution of the Romanian nation from the beginning to the formation of the Romanian state, as they were understood by the Romanian intellectuals of the 19th century.

STRUCTURES OF LANGUAGE IN ”A DEATH THAT DOESN'T PROVE ANYTHING”

When Anton Holban writes about literature, one can hardly say that he does a proper literary critics. But reading sympathetically the books that meet this anxieties, he manages to formulate deep observations, in spite of an insufficient critical language. The writer did not practise a professionalized reading, like it is sometimes the case of the critics who are obliged to accept piles of volumes, no matter their value, in order to set a hierarchy. Holban often confessed that, given the shortness of life (this is one of his fundamental premonitions) he couldn’t afford to read what he wasn’t interested in. His readings are obssessive and elective. Racine, B. Constant, Fromentin, Proust, Huxley, Thomas Hardy, H. Papadat-Bengescu are his reference authors. Holban’s work identifies with his own life, he didn’t add anything, he just repeated, he didn’t invent but reproduced, being interested only to create an authentic atmosphere proving that he is the promoter of a modern poetics in novel, whose centre is the concept of authenticity. The novelist adopts an insolite strategy aimed to confuse the reader, giving the same name to different characters. He prefers the first person narrative and this reality is able to place the writer in the centre of his own interest, literature becoming a process of self-knowledge. Holban depicts himself only in one character who gathers all the experiences, feelings, anxieties, fears and aspirations, in a word, his human condition.

On a closer reading, the story of Hänsel and Gretel, children's literature in appearance, depicts a ritual of initiation, a transforming journey of the two brothers from abandoned children to survivors, from victims to murderers, a real maturation process in which the protagonists face dangers to life and death, returning victorious to the point of departure.

HIGHLIGHTS OF A STUDY JOURNEYIN THE COMMUNIST TERROR DUNGEONS IN ROMANIA

This research is the result of a study journey, entitled "On the Footsteps of Confessor Who Experienced the Communist Dungeons", under the coordination of Fr. Conf. Gheorghe-Viorel Holbea, from the Faculty of Orthodox Theology "Justinian the Patriarch" in Bucharest and the organizers of the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and Memory of the Romanian Exile. This initiatic journey had an overwhelming effect on us, as master’s students, because it was similar to what Romulus Rusan and Ana Blandiana experienced in "America of the Gray Greyhound". The route itinerary comprised the re-education camps in Jilava, Aiud, Gherla, Sighet and the Făgăraș Fortress. This journey was an enquiry of our own awareness, an instrument of morality and an example of human sacrifice in the spirit of freedom and faith. Such a journey can profoundly change our perspective about life and the way we perceive history.

THE EMPERROR CONSTANTINE, AS ANALYSED BY TODAY’S LITERATURE

This work is part of an extensive study that will be based on ancient biography and medieval hagiography, referring to the life of Constantine the Great under the symbol and power of the cross. To carry out this study, the following will be aimed at: rediscovering the tradition and truth about Constantine, reinterpreting the literature of the present, witnessing the journey of the Illyrian emperor from the petrarchy to the end of his earthly reign, observing the point of view expressed by the ostentatious teachers in the field of universal church history as an intercultural dialogue, discovering more about important supporters of the emperor: Eusebius of Caesarea, Eftimie of Tarnovo and Neagoe Basarab, especially because the latter is considered to be a keeper of our national identity. Even if the following work capitalizes on religious sources, it does so with a well determined purpose: to create a portrait as close as possible to the true one of the emperor who has shaped faithfully, but also with the skill of a valuable ruler, the destiny of an empire and of all Christianity. In order to answer the question "Is Emperor Constantine judged by today`s Literature?" it should be made clear that, in this, there will be a real contradiction of ideas and a visible competition between Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci's Code and that of James L. Garlow and Peter Jones, entitled Da Vinci's Broken Code. The characters of the two works will find themselves in a constant search for arguments, the periodization of religious history also providing the necessary clarifications about the contribution of Emperor Constantine to the organization and evolution of the Christian Church under the scepter of a new symbol: The Holy Cross. Therefore, the Da Vinci Code, also called the Code of Brown, perceived by some readers as a bestseller, will bring the magic of information, but also doubt, highlighting the guilt of Emperor Constantine. DaVinci's Broken Code will be placed in opposition to the Brownian novel, bringing counter-arguments to rehabilitate the Christian iliir. In support of this work will also stand the work "Great Religions" published under the guidance of Philippe Gaudin, which brings to the attention of readers information on the existence of common areas on the coordinates of prophecies and prophecies, symbols and more or less similar holidays. Through the aspects presented it will be observed that the Constantine deeds are having a continuous battle with the Literature Of The Present, that the sensational has gained more and more ground in front of the people, proving a significant influence on personalities and mentalities, by overturning and transforming the historical and religious truth.

French drama in the 18th century begins to be highly influenced by the English drama and its innovations. Voltaire is one of the dramatists who still promoted the 17th century drama and its depiction but, despite his vehement criticism against innovative directions, he starts to adopt some of them slightly. During his stay in England, Voltaire got accustomed to Shakespeare’s drama, which was both appreciated and criticised. At some point, Voltaire’s drama reflects the English scene, being influenced by Shakespeare’s dramatic art. In this way, Voltaire opens the way to a new dramatic art in France: the bourgeois drama.

LITERATURE IN THE TIME OF CHARLES II AND THE CULT OF THE ROYAL PERSONALITY

The author focuses in this article on the literature during the regime of Carol II, a period of remarkable cultural effervescence, in which the literature also had a great development, great personalities knew the peaks of the creation. But not from the point of view of the literary historian, but from the point of view of the use of literature in support of the cult of the king's personality, this small study was carried out. Works of high-value were completed, culminating with the "Romanian Encyclopedia". Numerous works have been published, which, in popular editions, have also reached the world of villages. The king appeared as a leader promoting a balanced cultural policy. He participated actively and supported large cultural events and we highlight the "Book Month". The cult of the royal personality reaches its peak in 1938-1940, the period of the royal dictatorship, the writers also contributing to its exacerbation, reaching quotas never before encountered in the Romanian space. The press and literature, along with other instruments subjected to the power, contributed to the creation of a hyperbolized image of a king through which the nation reborn, a savior of the homeland, but who, in front of the great problems of 1940, proved to be not up to his mission.

The application of the folkloristic vision on the identification and interpretation of images, motifs, symbols, myths, prosodic structures, lyrical sequences, narrative conventions etc., intertextualized in writers' literary works by referring to their manifestation in the popular mentality is a new perspective adopted with reference to prose investigation. from Bessarabia (1960-1980), studied mainly in literary terms. The channeling of this approach on the vision of folklore research allowed the identification of folk ways of creation, of the substantial components of popular creation assimilated in plastic, as well as the interpretation of constituents as facts and acts of popular culture in constant updating, emphasizing the varied typology of ethnofolkloric constituents operated in modern studies. Therefore, the mechanisms of transfiguration of folk elements in literary works were revealed, depending on the literary orientations of the prose writers.

FEMALE CHARACTERS OF WORLD WAR I MEMORY NOTES

Despite the fact that women were not only passive witnesses of the First World War, they represented powerful characters, in both ways, meaning strong moral personalities, manifesting perseverence and determination, and, in the literary plan, some of them become protagonists disguised in their own writings. In comparison, asuming permanent risks, because of the enemy offensive, but also the long waiting of those gone to war, the ordinary women, from the country, or from the lower middle class, were not inferior. On the other hand, famous women like Queen Mary (of Romania), Elena Văcărescu, Martha Bibescu are considered promoters of the Romanian cause in the country and abroad. The sense of duty and responsability of the women manifested also in their efforts in the care of the wounded on the front lines, as nurses during the war, most of them being novices, without the necessary experience, or protecting the orphans or organizing food bank and so on. Last, but not least, the meditation about the experience of the war is integrated specific compositions, including memoirs, especially about the period of German occupation, related, for example, by Pia Alimăneșteanu, Ecaterina Raicoviceanu-Fulmen or Arabella Yarka, figures less famous, but engraved somehow in the collective memory of the great war. In this respect, following the events of 1989, although they received a wider yet restricted reception, the female representations within the panoply of famous figures, and not only, are still topics worthy of further study.

There are many theatrical sources that are used in research about theater and its duration. All of them can be classified into two large groups: primary and secondary sources. In addition to primary (immediate) theatrical sources, which come from the closest environment of stage practice, for the most faithful reconstruction of a past theatrical act, it is necessary to use secondary (indirect) theatrical sources. The primary (immediate) sources of the reconstruction speak directly about the play that is the subject of research, while the secondary sources indirectly offer certain knowledge related to the mentioned theatrical event. Primary theater sources include programs, catalogs, posters, posters, as well as original archival documents. Secondary theater sources are: theoretical discussions about the theater, drafts and templates for future stage works, all forms of public feedback on the play and its accompanying phenomena (criticisms, reportages, polemics), news about the theater in the most diverse means of public communication (press, radio, film, television). The whole of the theatrical being is constituted by a complex of theater segments, and it is significantly and significantly completed by primary (posters, programs, catalogs, archival documents) and secondary theatrical sources (film, radio, television, press...).

Product of the school "of grammatical venerable" Pupillus Orbilius of Rome, Quintus Horatius Flaccus, "not being tied to the old Roman traditions (...) suffered since early youth the influence of Greek culture and became elinophil, as he stood all his life" (Grabar-Passek, 1959:381, vol.I), and through his poetic creation always pleaded for moderation, sobriety, temperance of passions. Since that time the art was influenced by the beautiful made by inspired artists of the world. The aesthetic of beauty was fulfilled by the idea of creating human enjoyment in admiration of the artist's spiritual universe that exists. Its being merged with art, whether we speak of men of letters with free word, with the image of idealized image. Everything was harmonized, eventually, for perfect creation. Horace was born to become eternal, lofty tribune who said: "I hate the profane people, and I keep him away ...”1, not for fear that his speech would not have been so strong, that it can combat the stupidity, but to ignore the hypocrisy. Reading his Odes and generally the whole creation, the reader will observe the actuality of his ideas regarding the anthropological study of character, attitudes, inclinations of those who are immersed in the nothingness of time: "The one who by moving eyebrow moves the world”2, says in one of the Odes of the third book, finding his full expression in the behavior of those who rule the world today. Horace wrote in Latin, but also in Greek, everything found in his study of human being, and the result had a profound effect on the writings of major outlets of Greek orators. Universal through culture, current through his work that he left to posterity, not as a sum of lyrics, but as study of human attitude that has not changed anything in his behavior, the erudite tribune, preserver of traditions of honesty, will be recorded in one of his Odes: "Not extinguish the pain - why, stirring / envy, I would build a splendid atrium, / fashionable? Why would I give / On a heavy luxury my valley" (The Choir of Virgins and Youngsters, 1961:57).

THE DYSTOPIA OF THE UNREPRESENTABLE: ANGELA CARTER AND DIANE ARBUS, TRANSDISCIPLINARY TRANSITIONS

The present paper situates its concerns at the crossroads of literary studies, cultural studies and visual culture in an effort to illustrate how contemporary feminine dystopia may sometimes permeate interdisciplinary boundaries and may find common representational tools in order to subvert the grounds of normative representation. Departing from Derrida’s rehabilitation of difference as différance, the present study investigates the way in which contemporary feminine artistic discourse has appropriated this reconfiguration. Congruent with Deleuze’s conceptual opposition of difference and representation, where representation figures as static and incomplete, Derrida’s différance opens infinite possibilities to both expressing and interpreting one’s difference in the world. In this respect, this study focuses on the fiction of Angela Carter and the photography of Diane Arbus, as pertaining not only to a similar temporal and cultural framework (the post-1960s Western culture), but also to a similar gesture of interrogating the norm, the category, the boundary, by creating the dystopia of the unrepresentationable and thus contesting the consecrated system of representation based on binary divisions. Dwelling on dystopia’s subversive attack of reality and its potential to create alternative worlds, this paper explores the intimate connections between fiction and visual representations and their potential to destabilize traditional master narratives such as normativity and normality.

And People Like You”: will the future of humanity be governed or even controlled by artificial intelligence? Will androids replicate entirely and replace ‘homo sapiens’? Furthermore, does complying with a strict moral code or purely logic thinking of a robot outweigh a flesh and blood individual’s tolerance and compassion? The end of McEwan’s 2019 novel, “Machines Like Me” points at the possibility of an AI supremacy in the future. It will be the humans’ huge task to figure out how ‘to make friends’ with the new machines.

LANGUAGE AS A LINK BETWEEN REALITY AND FICTION

Reality is not copied and transposed ad litteram into texts, but is perceived through the senses, filtered through thought and recreated, through language, in different contexts. Thus, reality and fiction, traditionally viewed in opposition, lose their antagonistic character in the textual plane as long as they are constituted in subjective ways, located either in the sphere of affirmation or in the sphere of denial, of capitalizing the models that referential reality establishes. Fiction becomes, from this point of view, a way to communicate about reality with the help of the linguistic tools that reality itself offers for use. On the other hand, language is in a relationship of continuous interdependence with the environment in which it manifests itself, in the sense that the continuous production of texts (generated in thought, transmitted through speech and sometimes sedimented in writing) cannot be foreign of the social, historical, but especially cultural context in which he marked his beginnings. The language manifests on the individual user the conservative tendency through the mechanisms of the system and through the norm, depositing the tradition in the linguistic science of the speaker, which conforms to him; in turn, benefiting from the freedoms offered and assumed, the user comes to influence the linguistic context through individual innovations, subsequently adopted to a greater or lesser extent, permanently or reversibly, transforming an individual manifestation into an interindividual one, therefore into a new context. The element of stability, the one that protects the culture from a definitive revolt against the old parental forms, belonging to the concrete reality, is the language. Although subjected to a process of manipulation, in the sense that it no longer reveals a reality as it is, lived, but a reality as it is likely to be, created, language retains its fundamental role, that of naming, and this it is obvious by analysing the meaning of names and attributes in different textual, historical, cultural, fictional contexts.

In order to outline the complexity of post-war Romanian literature diorama, we set to question the heated polemics triggered by the fall of the Communism, as well, stemming from the need to revise values. After the 90’s, during an effervescent period of transition, when the Romanian society seemed to be ”in the core of a demonization, as in the middle of a typhoon”, in the quest for balance within the newly-acquired freedom, the interest for reevaluating post-war Romanian literature seems more and more acute. From the multitude of problem-posing debates, we will ponder upon two, which will complete the puzzle intended. We will set forth the the analysis of ”Calendelor”(1991-1993), ”Literatura română postbelică între impostură și adevăr” and that of ”Caiete critice (1996)”, „Literatura română postbelică”.

In terms of defining the position, weight and route of Islamic identity in Turkish politics, the examining its historical characteristics and the change there offers an important opportunity. This study aims to deal with the historical course of the Islamic identity / discourse, which began to come to the fore in the political and cultural grounds in the 1970s in Republican Turkey, through the narrative world of Islamic novels, the first examples of which were given in this period and reaching to the 2000s. For this reason, the text analysis method is used in this study. In this study, it is indicated that Islamic identity / discourse is periodically shaped around different understandings and different approaches and generally follows a historical course that evolves from Islamism to Conservatism.

Переклад і переспів як форми міжлітературної взаємодії (на матеріалі українськомовного перевтілення балад Р. Бернза)

The concept of artistic translation, and the criteria for its requirements, are constantly evolving: what used to be considered a translation, now, based on a vastly expanded range of forms of inter-artistic interaction and intertextuality, qualifies translation, as a rehash process, as imitation, motifs’ creation, stylisation, adaptation, transplantation, borrowing, processing, citation, figurative analogy, reminiscence. Mixing them sometimes leads to arbitrary interpretations of the translation freedom degree. Ideally, the translator should know perfectly, in addition to his native language, the language and culture of the people whose literature they are working on to be congenial to the author of the original to create not only in a rational but also in an emotional register, with complete spiritual dedication. Such was the master of Ukrainian translation Mykola Lukash, who could perfectly harmonise antinomies of spirit/letter, content/form, and more. Entirely original are his transformations of Robert Burn’s ballads. The author compares the versions of the interpretation of R. Burn’s ballad “My Heart’s in the Highlands” by P. Grabovsky, V. Mysyk, S. Karavanskyi, V. Chernyshenko, M. Lukash, and concludes that the freest and melodic one is the rehash attempt by M. Lukash. This is probably the most related to folk motifs variation on the famous work of Robert Burns. The ballad “The Lass that Made the Bed for Me” is the most popular in today’s media space. Ever since the Soviet times, the translation of this ballad, made by Samuel Marshak, is still considered a classic one in the trade of translation, where both the substantive and formal parameters of the original are pretty accurately reproduced.
