This paper focuses on features and role of out-of-body experiences in the universes of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke and Servant from Dobromyl and Urizka Gothic by Halyna Pahutiak. They are an integral part of magic in these works of fantasy, which is derived from national folklore tradition. The key figurative means that establish patterns in describing out-of-body experiences are epithet structures, embodying the qualitative characteristics, and repetition, providing their rhythm and coherence. The descriptions of out-of-body experiences in these novels fall into two major categories: those imbibed with sensory qualitative information and those based on listings of action. In the first case, the verbal form of incantation is strengthened through the abundance of characteristics, which often bear symbolic meaning. Though repetition can be found in both cases, it is more pronounced in the second one, where epithet structures are markedly absent. Here, verbal magic is interwoven with recitals of actions ritualistic in nature.

Esej sumarizuje přístup k literární fikci, který vyvinuli představitelé teorie řečových aktů (autor fiktivního vyprávění předstírá autentické vypovídání). Autor eseje teorii předstírání domýšlí a navrhuje ilokuční charakter fikčního diskurzu popsat jako nepřímou deklaraci (vyprávění svou ilokuční silou nepřímo deklaruje stav věcí, o kterém vypovídá).

The study deals with grotesqueness as an aesthetic category of expression that is significant for works of fiction by Miloš Urban, especially for the novella Michaela. Události v klášteře svatého Anděla (Michaela. Events in the monastery of the Holy Angel, 2004). On the basis of the analysis of emblematic motifs (masks, disguises, mirrors, etc.) and characters (monster, double, stranger, etc.), the present study shows the artistic procedures and principles of the grotesqueness (for example hybridism, exaggeration), its specific forms and transformations in the mentioned novella and also suggests some possibilities of its interpretation.

This study deals with the relationship of university students to books, reading, and literary education, reports the results of surveys, provides analyses of the received data, and presents conclusions about the findings. The inspiration for the research problem and the methodology of the survey were drawn from professional books written by Jiří Trávníček Do We Read? Czech Citizens and Their Attitude to the Book (2008), Readers and Internauts. Czech Citizens and Their Attitude to the Book (2011) and Overloaded by Books. What we read and buy (2013) which represent contemporary survey projects of larger extent focused on reading in the Czech Republic. The first survey questioned university students comprising 355 respondents, 42 men and 313 women. The second survey questioned university students comprising 188 respondents, 24 men and 164 women. The research factors included: • pattern of book reading behaviour (process of reading, buying books, visiting public libraries); • reading strategies (“how”, “where” and “when” they read); • reading in foreign languages; • favourite writers, works, literary genres etc.; • correlation between school assessment and reading; • correlation between a positive attitude towards literature classes (or the teacher) and reading etc.

The essay aims at situating the theory of drama formulated in a lecture series given in 1831 by Anton Müller (1792–1843), Professor of Aesthetics at Prague University, within the context of Central-European aesthetics of the day. Therefore, two contemporaneous discussions are outlined to provide a background for the comparison. They are respresented by drama interpetations laid down in aesthetics lectures of Müller’s predecessors in Prague and influential Austrian reflections on drama dating from the first three decades of the nineteenth century. The comparison with the ideas and theories of August Gottlieb Meißner (1753–1807) and Johann Heinrich Dambeck (1774–1820) demonstrates that Müller’s theory of drama was no longer in accordance with Enlightenment drama principles, while the comparison with the then renowned reflections of Joseph Schreyvogel (1768–1832), Heinrich Joseph von Collin (1771–1811), August Wilhelm Schlegel (1767–1845), Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger (1780–1819), Wilhelm von Schütz (1776–1847), Matthäus von Collin (1779–1824), and Michael Leopold Enk von der Burg (1788–1843) exemplifies similarities between Müller’s theory and Austrian, religiously based and spiritually oriented, aesthetics of the time.

The study looks into the question of to what extent Jan Neruda’s early literary production (the period of 1859–1860 when he was a leading figure of the journal Obrazy života [Scenes of Life]) can be perceived as a contribution to the establishment of realism in Czech literature. The connection with this movement is obvious on the level of theoretical hypotheses, yet Neruda’s own prose differs from traditional notions of realism in a number of features. This raises a question of whether existing conceptions of realism, based on principles of objective, probable and universal description of everyday life, is not too narrow and restricted to one variant of this movement, a variant limited to a specific period. Nevertheless, even if one reassesses and extends the concept of realism, it remains clear that some features of Neruda’s prose subvert the noetic foundations of realism (especially the faith in the consistency of reality and its objectively verifiable knowability) and thus challenge the movement even before it has been fully established. Neruda can therefore be seen as a forerunner of Modernism.

The study attempts at two complementary goals: 1) It discusses the principal character of historical themes in 19th century fiction and strives to give a new specification of realistic historicism based on traditional research on romantic historicism. At this point, the study concludes that Czech realistic prose-writers in treating historical themes mostly used techniques established already by romanticism. The development of the romantic model of historical fiction cannot therefore be defined by absolute criteria (like, e.g., the presence / absence of concrete means or techniques), but only by means of relative criteria (clearly higher / lower extent of using a single means or technique, its central / peripheral position in the semantic structure of a text, and so on). 2) The theory mentioned above is applied here on a short-story Osudná kniha. Historická povídka (A Fateful Book. Historical story, 1866) by Karel Sabina. This short-story uses a fully literary form for processing a 17th century legal cause of a Czech nobleman and a printer Henyk of Wallenstein, involving an illegal publication of a politically subversive book, and sticks tightly to the historical legal documentation. At the same time, the study gives evidence of blending of literary and scientific discourses in Osudná kniha that is based on comparing this short-story with Sabina´s long scientific article regarding the same topic, that was published in 1867.
