Summary/Abstract: The study deals with grotesqueness as an aesthetic category of expression that is significant for works of fiction by Miloš Urban, especially for the novella Michaela. Události v klášteře svatého Anděla (Michaela. Events in the monastery of the Holy Angel, 2004). On the basis of the analysis of emblematic motifs (masks, disguises, mirrors, etc.) and characters (monster, double, stranger, etc.), the present study shows the artistic procedures and principles of the grotesqueness (for example hybridism, exaggeration), its specific forms and transformations in the mentioned novella and also suggests some possibilities of its interpretation.
