This paper introduces Julio-César Santoyo, the leading Spanish theorist of Translation Studies. It comments he reception of his work in the Czech Republic analyzing critical reviews, articles and academic papers dedicated to his figure. The author’s research on the peninsular Middle Ages is of great importance. Among other topics, he is interested in the occupation of interpreters and the translation metalanguage, available for the Czech readers in the book The Seven Faces of Translation Studies.

The text is about the Czech translation of Vladimir Martinovski’s works, published by Slavomira Ribarova in Brno between 2011–2013. He is a renowned poet and musician coming from the younger generation of Macedonian poets. Martinovski participated in the international residential programme “Journey Across Europe-Remeasuring Cultural Space”, 2010–2011, which was coordinated by the publishing house “Windmills” (Větrné Mlýny) in the Czech Republic. The same house has later introduced the full paper edition of Martinovski’s “Quartets”, intended for reading, watching, singing and listening, to the Czech audiences and poetry scene. Ribarova‘s translations are carefully crafted in a correct and precise manner.

The Reception of Karel Čapek’s short stories in Macedonian starts with Vera Janeva-Stojanovich, the author of the only PhD dissertation dedicated to the great Czech and world-wide writer which is named: “Karel Čapek and expressionism” (Skopje, 1973). Čapek’s work is also translated on Macedonian by: Dimitar Dimitrov, Dime Mitrevski and the most by Professor Donka Rous. Although Čapek’s short stories are written a hundred years ago, they have lost nothing of theirs freshness; nowadays, they are still admirable with their great sort of humanism.

Ivan Němec deals with adaptations by Jan Vladislav. His life and work were adversely affected by the political ideology after the 1948 coup. The ban of publication he had to face several times was reflected to a large extent in his creative development and translation activities as well asin his interest in literature for children. From his own rhymed fairy tales related with hislong-term interest in folklore this excellent translator gradually moved to original adaptations of fairy tales of various nations.

The aim of this research is to expose Wiktor Voroshilsky’s translation strategy, especially the translation methods and techniques he uses as the author of the Polish versions of Russian poems. Theorists of translation quite often pay attention to the problem of translation of proper names, exploring different contexts related to this issue. Bazyli Tichoniuk wrote about the translation of names within Polish and Russian at the time, while for other languages we can mention works by Ewa Teodorowicz-Hellman, Anna Szcześniak, Elżbieta Skibińska, Anna Majkiewicz, and Krzysztof Hejwowski. This article attempts to indicate a specific translator’s approach to translating proper names. The material under study consists of 25 poems selected from 211 works translated by Voroshilsky. The main selection criterion was the saturation of the poem with elements of interest to the authors, as well as their diversity. This determined the research method, which focused on analysing the repeatability and variety of translation techniques. Finally, we concluded that Voroshilsky employed different methods of translation, often guided by the function performed by the proper names in the text. We also paid attention to his objective to bring the text closer to the target audience and on the creativity of the translator.

The author of the text devotes attention to the trap of etymological analogy, which is important from the point of view of translation, and affects the way the Gospel is interpreted. He focuses on the key Greek word το πτωμα (to ptõma) for the verse of Mt 24.28 and the word that is important for the verse Łk 17.37 το σωμα (to sõma). These words in Polish translations of the Gospels in the twentieth century began to be translated as “carrion”. According to the author, it was a wrong decision. Contrary to the words used in the source text, in Polish the word “carrion” is associated with emotionally negative feelings, while in the New Testament these words refer to the body of a dead person, often the Savior himself. The article also recalled Origen’s remarks in order not to overlook the detail that our logion talks about eagles, not vultures. According to the author, the false translation decision results in an almost profound closure to the rich tradition that the Fathers of the Church left in commenting on both verses.

In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI promulgated apostolic constitution Anglicanotum coetibus. In this special document pope opened the way for conversion of conservative members of the Church of England. Former Anglicans exist in the Catholic Church in three personal ordinariates and use special liturgical book for the Holy Eucharist. The main goal of the text is to show biblical element in the liturgy of the holy mass celebrated according to Divine Worship: The Missal. The author looked at the Anglican theology, ordo of the mass in personal ordinariates and theology of John Henry Newman – the most famous former Anglican in the history of Catholicism.

EFFECT OF BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE ON AUDITORY COMPREHENSION IN INTERPRETING COURSES

Saudi college students majoring in translation take six interpreting courses. In those courses, they practise listening to and interpreting authentic lectures in a variety of subject areas. Results of an interpreting pre-test showed that college students majoring in an interpreting course have problems with media reports. They have difficulty discriminating phonemes and comprehending the meaning of unfamiliar foreign proper nouns such as place name, names of politicians, organizations, chemicals or diseases that they encounter in oral media reports. Results of questionnaire-interviews with students showed that the source of difficulty was lack of prior knowledge and unfamiliarity with foreign proper names.

The translation of local-colour elements is one of the most often-discussed problems in the translation of artistic literature. Although it is generally considered that these elements are usually weakened in the translation, they should not be overlooked. As a main working hypothesis, we accept that the culture-specific elements of the translation are mostly lost. To examine this problem, we will use the translatological analysis of selected short stories and novels from the collection of the Bulgarian author Yordan Radichkov—Six Small Matryoshkas and a Big One and Memories of Horses. The main aim of our translatological analysis is to find out how the local colour of Bulgarian works was weakened, deformed or preserved and the possible emotional effect on the Czech readers. The focus of our interest is not only the translation transformations but also the reception of literary works in different language environments.
