When we think of Paulo Leminiski (1944–1989) and of his artistic ‘signature’, it is his peculiar relation with the foreign languages and cultures that comes to the fore as one of the most important aspects of his work: an aspect determining his uniqueness. It manifests itself in his originally conceived translations and in his literary work in general—and, arguably, is traceable back to the wide cultural dialogue, to which Leminski was profoundly committed. His participation in that dialogue would both determine the directions of his development and open new possibilities affecting his artistic production, thus contributing to the establishment of his literary persona that would often, dangerously and provocatively, be confused with his empirical self. This paper aims to offer a panoramic view of some of Leminski’s works in the context of his dialogue with Brazilian Concrete Poetry in order to shed some light upon his lifelong project in terms of his intellectual propositions and their consequences, or, less specifically, his expressive experiences collected throughout his career. In conclusion, the argument underlying this article leads to the (re)affirmation of Leminski’s living art, that, through translations/betrayals of the Other and for the Other, grants one an insight into the nature of Brazilian literature (and especially Brazilian lyrical poetry) of the first half of the 20th century. Leminski’s work provides his reader with an ideal point of departure to understand the cultural legacy of Brazil, whose turbulent history offers lessons that never lose validity.

This paper is focused on the difficulties that Bulgarian reception of the Bible encountered in nineteenth century – the lack of older canonical translations and the opposition of the Ecumenical Patriarchate against new translations, which were associated with Protestantism. Some instances that illustrate the ideas of the Bulgarians from that period are presented. One of them is from Two Brothers (Dvama bratya; 1888–1889) by Iliya Blaskov – a semi-documental novel dealing with the fates of the author’s family. The author concludes that the image of the Holy Scripture that even pious teachers had at that time was vague and closer to folk-lore than to modern biblical notions.

Job 1:6 is one of several places in the Bible where God’s sons (celestial beings) are mentioned: “One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.” Numerous commentaries of the Church Fathers were included in the Greek catena to the Book of Job. Some of these were not written specially as commentaries to this passage but are extracts from works commenting the nature of the angels, their place in God’s providence and their role in human life. The author then goes on to discuss the two Slavic translations that were made of the catena. The first one comprises the majority of the texts included in the Greek catena, while the second one contains only two small passages from commentaries of Saint John Chrysostom and Olympiodoros. The article provides a comparison between Slavic texts, which were translated from Greek in the Balkans at the same time: in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century. Several miniatures from medieval Greek manuscripts, which illustrate the Celestial symposium, are represented at the end of the article.

This article presents a hitherto unknown catena to the Psalter. It is divided in two parts, placed in two manuscripts: in Manuscript No. 116 (psalms 1 through 76), and in Manuscript No. 117 (the remaining psalms). The catena contains commentaries of more than 15 Byzantine authors. The article then goes on to compare the Psalter text accompanying the catena with texts of other editions. It becomes clear that the text of the Hilandar manuscripts is very close to the texts of the Mount Athos edition and of Cyprian’s edition, although it has its own characteristics. The newly found catena is the most voluminous catena translated into a Slavic language. The discovery of the text will lead to new researches into the history of the Slavic Psalter and the Slavic translations of the Bible.

The object of the current research is Talkovanie na Kniga na propok Daniil – the Slavonic version of the Commentaries on the Book of Prophet Daniel (Commentarii in Danielem, CPG 1873) by Hippolytus of Rome (c. 170–235), the earliest and most profound commentaries on this Old Testament book. They were written round 204 and their translation into Old Bulgarian can be counted among the earliest works of Bulgarian literature. The time of the Commentaries’ translation is under discussion, its dating ranging from the last decades of the ninth to the middle of the tenth century. Some linguistic facts of the Commentaries have sporadically been compared with the partial translation of the Book of the Prophet Daniel, included in the Prophetologion. Also, some comparisons have been made between the Slavonic translation of the Commentaries and the so-called Talkovni proroci – a translation of Old Testament books of prophets with commentaries. The analysis is based on a 1519 manuscript of the Commentaries (No. 486 from the Volokolamsk Collection, Russian State Library, Moscow), which follows the tradition of the earlier copies and most profoundly keeps the content of the Commentaries. In addition to morphological particularities, in the text there are many lexical idiosyncrasies, which can facilitate the dating and localization of the translation. Among these lexical markers can be singled out which show more interesting data. Many lexemes can be found which are particular to the early written codices and testify to the antiquity of the translation. For instance, some specific lexemes match with words, used in the Codex Suprasliensis and the First Miscellany of Tsar Simeon (Izbornik of 1073), which shows that the Commentaries are one of the earliest translated works of the Old Bulgarian literature.

O dwóch słowiańskich przekładach dialogu Ofiara Abrahama

The paper’s main aim is to present two South-Slavonic translations of the Renaissance Greek drama Abraham’s sacrifice (I Thysía toú Avraám) by Vincenzo Cornaro; the first one was made by the Serbian man of letters Vikentije Rakić (1750–1818) at the end of the eighteenth century, the second one – by Andrey Pop-Doynov Robovski (1801–1858), a Bulgarian priest, teacher and activist for autocephaly of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. The different reception and spread of the two translation was probably due to their various cultural contexts and literary value. Rakić’s translation was widely disseminated in both printed editions and manuscript copies, two of which are described in detail in the present article.

St Maxim the Greek (Преп. Максим Грек, 1470–1556): Some Notes on His Understanding of the Sacred Time

Based on a manuscript by St Maxim the Greek, this article explores his specific understanding of the relationship between language and biblical tradition. It gives some answers to questions concerning his theology, which are posed by his liturgical experience of the sacred time, which is based not on repeating the excerptions from the patristic authors, but is primarily founded on his accurate reading and in-depth perception of the Holy Bible. Maxim the Greek, who in his personal writings showed a detailed knowledge of both the Old Testament and Slavonic biblical texts, was thus not only able to separate the canonical from the non-canonical sacred texts, but also successfully classified the Christian teachings according to ethical value, from the Old Testament prophets to the apostles and the Church Fathers. With his hierarchy he also gave meaning to the ontological-eschatological dimension (three levels – appropriate to the Holy Trinity) of their spiritual efforts. His knowledge, which also reflects the precise understanding of dogmatic theological decisions of the first ecumenical church councils, ranks highest the learning that comes directly from the Son of God, which Maxim the Greek experienced through his theological-liturgical prayer practice. Maxim found theologically unambiguous formulations which most profoundly determined the specific nature of his personal theology in the Byzantine hymnography dedicated to the Mother of God. All the mentioned facts lead the author to the further explore his specific Old Church Slavonic language, in which he managed to preserve not only the early Christian mentality but also the theological-liturgical characteristics of the ascetic and later monastic discipline that he learned in the monastery of Vatopedi at the Holy Mount Athos. The article concludes with the proposition that only through detailed study of the personal language of St Maxim the Greek can we arrive at a definition of his Theology.

The focus of this article is on the prolific and variegated translation possibilities of the substantivations of Ancient Greek in the text under translation into Latvian – Aristotle's „Rhetoric”. The potential translations of Ancient Greek substantivations are examined from the viewpoint of conversion, elliptic substantivations and substantivated sentences and wider linguistic formations in an attempt to establish an experience-based, motivated system for translating Ancient Greek substantivations into Latvian. In the course of this inquisition the authors come to the conclusion that it is only partially possible to translate directly the Ancient Greek substantivations, but for the most part one has to find an equivalent syntactical construction that has no signs of a substantivation in the Latvian language. Thus the inquiry into the translation of substantivations summons a larger-scale discussion about the difficulties of translation, causing to thoroughly think over the sought for translational harmony both of the thought and grammatical expression.

The paper is devoted to the analysis of various artistic, documentary, and publicistic works of V.G. Korolenko, which are united by the American theme. The materials used are the writer’s texts (travel notes, articles, and correspondence), both published and unpublished during his lifetime. The analysis allows us to see that V.G. Korolenko’s texts are not just ethno-graphic travel essays. They are rather his deep thoughts about the two images of the world – Russian and American, containing assessment of the pace of technological progress, ideals of freedom, respect for the individual, as well as attitude towards pragmatism and individualism. The writer’s characters of the foreign world are perceived through the use of natural and cultural contrasts. In his works, V.G. Korolenko brought up an important topic of national awareness based on the European and American realities. Overall, the study shows that the image of America appears in the works of V.G. Korolenko as more voluminous and ambiguous than it is generally assumed for the representative of critical realism. It is concluded that the impressions of the trip to the exhibition held in Chicago in 1893 turned out to be the basis for the subsequent literary art of V.G. Korolenko up to the end of his life.

INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION AND THE TUMULTUOUS WORLD OF GRAFFITI AND SCRATCHITI

Translation Studies has crossed a tumultuous interval of theorization. But has it passed the linguistic limits instituted by a semiotician like Umberto Eco? Wouldn’t be the time to access more courageously the intersemiotic interregnum with its heterogeneous transfer of signs? As it happens in advertising, concrete poetry, tattoos, and stage or filmed version of famous texts? We have gradually accepted that in the postcolonial and cross-cultural epoch what matters is not consensus, but negotiation and understanding. We assimilated the postmodern lesson about Grand Narratives (J–F. Lyotard) and the subjectivity of recorded history. So, we have to question ourselves about the role of translation and translators in a post-industrial society which blends globalized edutainment and corporatist efficiency, prejudice, reverse colonialism and anti-establishment movements. What type of equivalence are we supposed to choose in order to persuade today? The ekphrastic approach of translations may be better tuned to out gadgetized and image-informed epoch.

In her novel Remarkable Creatures, Tracy Chevalier tries to retrace the representation of women in the past, by focusing on a less known problem: the contribution of two women paleontologists of the 19th century, a time when the access of women in science was forbidden. The “remarkable creatures” are not the only fossils they discover; the women themselves are seen as «curiosities» in a world dominated by men. The novel is based on a double perspective, on a dialogue between the two main characters, Elizabeth Philpot and Mary Anning, who display alternative aspects of femininity (women’s friendship, women’s role in the Victorian society, the contradiction between the two women’s free spirit expressed in science and the religious dogma of the time).

Dzieje tłumaczeń, czyli o historii, której nie ma

Translations have been an interesting part of the history of literature. What has been their function and meaning in different literary epochs? Did they promote new tendencies or influence the creativity of the writers? What has been underestimated so far is the art of translation itself, that is, the development of techniques and styles of translation according to changes in the translator’s work conditions, especially the emancipation, secularization and professionalization of the profession, so that they have been seen as equal in importance to the writers themselves. What should be analyzed are the procedures and practices of translation, which can be interpreted according to contemporary textology. The history of the art of translation is also inspired by contemporary cultural studies, because it regards translation as an institution and focuses on translation discourse, that is, the complex of images, ideas and metaphors that each translator must respect when considering their readers. The tradition of translation is partly different from literary tradition in that the rules of ‘good translation’ promoted at certain times create a codex of a translator’s work.

The literary output of Bruno Schulz became known abroad in the 1960s, when "Cinnamon Shops" and "Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass" were published in translations. The German translation of both volumes was published by Carl Hanser Verlag in Munichin 1961, providing a basis for the foreign editions of Schulz’s fiction in Denmark and Finland. For 45 years, the German market was cornered by those early translations by Josef Hahn, published 24 times either in collections or separately. A new German version,by Doreen Daume, appeared as late as in 2008 and 2011. Such a long break implies that translating Schulz’s poetic prose must be quite difficult. The paper reconstructs the German reception of Schulz and presents criticism of some German translations.
