The Old City of Al Zubair. The emergence and physical reality

The Old City of Al Zubair. The emergence and physical reality (1571–1882 Iraq)

Author(s): Firas Sami Abdulaziz Alqatrani / Language(s): English Issue: 27/2015

The natural advantages of the site of the city of Al Zubair contributed to its becoming a stable settlement for the tribes migrating from Najd and Hejaz during the last four centuries. These features gave the city a fundamental stability and constant growth, turning it, later, into one of the main cities in the region and an important commercial centre. This research study aims to examine the historical dimensions of Al Zubair's emergence, as well as the physical housing reality within the boundaries of the walled city (which represents the first phase of the city's development), and to identify the role of people adapting the local conditions of the place in ways that made it a suitable environment for human habitation. The morphological method has been used in this study of the physical reality of the city. This sequential historical method grants geography an important third dimension: time. Al Zubair is, in terms of its architecture, a history written in the form of buildings, streets, and various other facilities; it is an historic compound that cannot be comprehended without an understanding of and insight into its historical development.

Author(s): Kozma Gábor,János Pénzes,Ernő Molná / Language(s): English Issue: 31/2016

Nowadays more and more attention is devoted to the spatial development of the location of sports facilities within cities. The main aim of our paper is to observe the most important spatial characteristics of their development in Hungarian cities of county rank. In these cities three main periods of development of sports facilities can be observed. Larger sports facilities were constructed especially on the edge of cities or in the suburbs, while in the case of smaller facilities a bigger role was played by locations within the city boundaries. As regards the factors influencing the location of sports facilities, the most important role was played by the location of available land areas, besides accessibility and from the mid-1960s links to existing facilities can be mentioned as well.

МЕТАФИЗИКА ТЗРИЗМА: ТУРИЗМ КАК СПОСОБ ДЕСАКРАЛИЗАЦИИ МИРА

Author(s): J.L. Ocean,V.P. Ocean / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5-6/2015

Author(s): Greg Yudin,Y. Koloshenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2014

This paper considers the role of local community in the development of tourist industry in small towns. What is the function of the local community in city brands construction and creation of museums and other tourist attractions? What is the influence of such innovations on the social life of a small city? The authors analyze the case of successful development of tourism in the city of Myshkin and discern several strategies of tourist experience production adopted by the local officials and activists. Special attention is paid to the role of the local community in implementation of these strategies by the political leaders and to the tactics of presentation of this community. The combination of different strategies creates spatial, symbolic and economic conditions favorable for the development of tourism, but at the same time entails ambiguous consequences for the local community.

Author(s): Lyudmila Aleksandrovna Maksimova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 5/2014

In recent decades the proliferation of museums and the transformation of their activities have become the subjects of debate in the western research. However, there are few studies aimed at understanding of museumification process in Russia. The study of the phenomenon of museumification is relevant due to orientation of the province at tourism development as the means of regional development. The author analyzes the role of museums in the local community and in the attraction of tourists and describes the changes in urbane space and temporal order of social life as the effects of museumification of Russian small towns. On the base of empirical observations the author emphasizes the most significant forms of museumification and defines the limits of this process: everyday practices and the difficult past seem to be its impediments. The research is based on the data collected during the field work in the towns Myshkin and Kargopol.

Obraz podwarszawskich letnisk w prasie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego

Author(s): Agnieszka Szurek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2016

Author(s): Renata Seweryn / Language(s): Polish Issue: 38/2015

The purpose of the paper is to answer the question whether there is a difference between the behaviors of people travelling with children and the behaviors of other tourists. Using the information coming from the research into tourist traffic in the city of Kraków, conducted in 2014, there are specified (using Mann-Whitney U test and Pearson’s X2 test) the statistically significant differences of behaviors of these two groups of tourists visiting the city. The obtained results allow to conclude that families with children more often than other tourists: are guiding in the choice the destination by the opinion of the family and by the knowledge coming from school, are travelling for the relaxation and cognitive reasons or to visit relatives, are staying at the tourist reception area by about a week, are arranging the travel themselves, are travelling by car and are choosing the hotels or the private lodgings/apartments as a place of accommodation.

»Ladies and gentelmen, all aboard!« Travelling in the Northern Adriatic until the Second World War

Author(s): Metod Šuligoj,Ljudmila Sinkovič / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2018

The article presents the forms of travelling characteristic of the northern Adriatic that formerly belonged to a unified but multicultural area from the Congress of Vienna in 1815 until 1941. The article focusses on the travelling of the local population and tourists by maritime transport services (the Austrian Lloyd founded in 1836 was the largest transport company of the Habsburg Monarchy) and the railway, and later by road motor transport. According to the available sources (the printed tourist guides are an important source for studying tourism development), we also explained the institutional support for tourism development and strategic development aspects by the Austro-Hungarian and later the Italian (fascist) government. The latter achieved significantly lower results in Istrian tourism due to anti-Slavic actions and other political circumstances, economic depression and the spread of epidemic diseases.

The Interplay between Tourism, FDI, Remittance, and Women’s Employment: Evidence from Low-Income Countries

Author(s): Elvira Nica,Danuta Szpilko,Simona Stamule,Alice AlAkoum,Alexandru Bogdan,Petris Geambazi / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This study used data collected from these nations to examine the impact of tourism on women’s employment in 32 low-income countries (LICs) from 1996 to 2020. This research uses panel generalized least squares (GLS), system generalized methods of moments (S-GMM), and quantile regression (QR) to evaluate the data. Total tourist arrivals, exports, foreign direct investment (FDI), remittances, urbanization, and the mortality rate of female children are considered in this study. Additionally, this study examines the impact of the tourism sector on employment with other control variables. The findings show that tourism considerably affects women’s employment in general. FDI, exports, and urbanization positively impact women’s economic employment. On the other hand, the mortality of female children and remittances are negatively associated with women’s employment. The S-GMM, QR, and GLS regressions have the same sign and direction. The robustness of our findings is demonstrated in this way. Considering the findings, tourism policy in low-income nations should be rethought so that more tourists and women are employed in tourist-related industries.

Potentials of Banovina region branding through tourism and soft power by understanding local identity

Author(s): Dejan Gluvačević,Iva-Mila Brigljević / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Aimed at boosting tourism and regional growth, this study investigated Banovina, a captivating Croatian region known for its natural beauty and cultural richness. Despite its potential, Banovina hasn't yet established itself as a branded tourist destination. To understand resident perspectives on tourism and branding possibilities, the research employed a two-pronged approach. Online questionnaires gathered opinions from the local population, while semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives from various Banovina institutions. This comprehensive approach provided valuable insights into Banovina's identity and potential branding strategies for tourist destination success. The study not only offers a theoretical framework for destination branding, identity, and image, but also analyzes Banovina's tourism offerings. It incorporates empirical research from the local population, interviews with relevant authorities, and a SWOT analysis to paint a well-rounded picture. The research concludes that Banovina possesses significant potential as a branded tourist destination, capitalizing on its unique cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty, and distinctive resources. However, challenges remain. To achieve economic prosperity and attract visitors and investors, successful branding is critical. This study provides a valuable framework and insights to guide Banovina's development as a unique and thriving tourist destination.

The Impact of Economic Freedom and International Tourism on International Trade: An Empirical Study in Asian Countries

Author(s): Buu Kiem Dang / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of economic freedom and the development of international tourism on international trade, encompassing exports, imports, and total trade. The research sample includes 22 Asian countries over the period from 1995 to 2020. The study employs the System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) for estimating the research models. Results indicate that economic freedom, business freedom, and trade freedom play a crucial role in international trade activities (both exports and imports). Furthermore, the development of international tourism also demonstrates a significantly positive impact on trade (both exports and imports). The study suggests that policies towards economic openness, increasing economic freedom, business freedom, and trade freedom should be carefully considered and promoted within the trade development strategies of nations. Additionally, economic policies should also focus on solutions to attract international tourists not only as a source of foreign currency but also as a support to foster the development of trade.
