Summary/Abstract: In recent decades the proliferation of museums and the transformation of their activities have become the subjects of debate in the western research. However, there are few studies aimed at understanding of museumification process in Russia. The study of the phenomenon of museumification is relevant due to orientation of the province at tourism development as the means of regional development. The author analyzes the role of museums in the local community and in the attraction of tourists and describes the changes in urbane space and temporal order of social life as the effects of museumification of Russian small towns. On the base of empirical observations the author emphasizes the most significant forms of museumification and defines the limits of this process: everyday practices and the difficult past seem to be its impediments. The research is based on the data collected during the field work in the towns Myshkin and Kargopol.
