Author(s): Maria Markova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

This article strives to demonstrate some of the aspects of Bulgarians’ lives in the indicated district and time period. Their local living lifestyle has been partially examined through the connection between the mobility/immobility of the people, the three forms of exchange of goods between the communities (work, marriage and education) and the national identity. There is a symbiotic connection between the mobile and the immobile population. Periodically, part of the people who are led by material reasons, social hierarchy, exogamy, matrilocalism of the marriage etc., begin to self-identify as Greeks. The rest of the community is self-identified by their Bulgarianism. During the last quarter of 19th century, the ethnical origin still does not limit the diverse individual statuses and roles. By the time of the Balkan war declaring the national identity transforms into a means for (re)defining and updating the internal and the external borders between these groups of Bulgarians, including their relations with the rest of the population within the region.

In particular, the most important issues related to these Bulgarian organisations (such as the increase of the number of the schools and the reason behind this, their connections with mainstream schools and some of their problems) are discussed. At the same time, it is acknowledged that most of these issues need further in-depth studies.

Към историята на гръцката общност в София от средата на ХХ век до днес: първите години

Author(s): Daniel Fokas / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2017

The publication is the result of the study of the Greeks who arrived in Bulgaria in 1948–1949 and the process of settling in the country in the 1950s. Their community is formed by political emigrants from Northern Greece who left the homelands after the Civil War in the country (1946–1949). The article traces the main moments in the history of the emigration and the settling in the new country, as well as the initial integration into the Bulgarian society. It outlines the actions of the Bulgarian state in support of the Greek immigrants – the establishment of dormitories, the providing of medical care, the work placement. An important point in the article is the special care for children refugees as well as their education. Another accent is the self-organization of the Greek community in Bulgaria during the first years of the settlement – the committees in the hostels, the General Committee of the Greek Immigrants, the additional organizations, the newspaper, the information bureau, the creation of an educational structure. The author also provides information on the structure of the emigrant community in terms of its ethnicity, geographical and social origin. The main purpose of the publication is to present these processes from the point of view of the internal life of the immigrants on the basis of the interviews of the author with some prominent community representatives who have finally settled in Sofia.

Author(s): Angelina Ivanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

The article examines the Bulgarian language curriculum in secondary school as an internal systemic cause for failure and associated student dropout in the Bulgarian education system. The author states that the curricula do not offer a system of inter-related knowledge and the programs’ content does not correspond to the development characteristics of the children. In summary, the curricula’s shortcomings can be classified in 3 groups: 1. Problems, related to misjudged age characteristics of the adolescents. 2. Problems, associated with the system of teaching of specific linguistic knowledge. 3. Problems, related to the entire cognitive system (imbalance of the cross-subject connections).

Мюсюлманите в България – изследователски проблеми и приноси

Author(s): Evgenia Troeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2017

The paper presents the topics and contributions in the contemporary study of the culture of Muslims in Bulgaria. It discusses scientific publications with an anthropological focus from the post-1989 period, when the theme about ethnic and religious minorities in Bulgaria became particularly relevant. One of the main topics of research is the state policy towards Bulgarian Muslims in the 20th century, which receives a new interpretation and evaluation. The study of inter-confessional relationships remains one of the leading lines of research in the early 21st century, too. Numerous studies have been published on the various ethno-confessional groups – Bulgarian Turks (Sunni, Alevi), Roma, Tatars, Muslim Bulgarians. The publications analyze elements of their culture, issues of religion and identity. Ordinary people, their culture, their strategies for adaptation in the changing social environment became increasingly an object of study instead of political history. Changes occur also in the approach to research; attention is redirected from highlighting the common elements in the culture of Christians and Muslims to analyzing the specificities, the alternative memories, local culture and identity of Muslims in Bulgaria.

Културни организации и идентичност на турците в България в началото на ХХІ век

Author(s): Bojidar Alexiev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2017

After the restoration of the rights of the Turks in Bulgaria in the beginning of the 1990s, they again received the opportunity to develop culture in their mother tongue. Over the time the Turkish chitalishta (culture centers), which had existed in the past, were re-established and new organizations pursuing various educational, creative and informational activities appeared. Already for several years on end, the Turkish cultural associations in Bulgaria have been organizing events and staging traditional and modern musical and dancing performances. The article studies the functioning of the Turkish cultural organizations in Bulgaria as well as the Turkish community’s self-representation by means of folklore performances in front of the other communities.

Русините – един скрит народ в Централна Европа.

Author(s): Kostadin Kostadinov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2017

The article presents in brief the history and the present of the Rusyns – one of the many European peoples “without a state”. They are an indigenous population of the Northern Carpathians inhabiting a territory in the geographical centre of Europe; however, during their millennial historical development they had their own state only once and for one day. Today, their historical region, Carpathian Ruthenia, is divided between five countries. In Ukraine, where the majority of the Rusyns lives, they do not have adequate political and cultural minority rights. In the rest of the countries, although they have different degrees of cultural and administrative autonomy, the Rusyns are facing the danger of assimilation because of their small number. Even though they are a geopolitical and ethnocultural reality, their future is at stake.

“What is Fatmagül’s Guilt?” Ethnology at the End of the Workday

Author(s): Vanya Zhekova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

The paper offers an ethnological reading of the Turkish TV series “What is Fatmagül’s guilt?” as well as a critical view on its broadcast on Bulgarian television. The central subject matter is a group rape which sets the main theme of the series: violence against women. The authors develop the theme in two main forms:physical/sexual and symbolic violence, the latter regulated and maintained by thewedding ritual. The core of the latter is the problem of virginity.Special focus is paid to the script and the way in which pre-modern culture is presented. There are examples which show that the literary text is not only a super structure over cultural facts or their basic illustration, but in many cases it conducts a dialogue with them, transforms them and even rejects them as cultural practices (the problem of guilt, the ‘besmirching’ of the woman, the first wedding night complex, the cultural meaning of the red colour in a man’s relationship with his wife, the bed, material and spiritual, etc.). The series represents a good example of creative work on and analysis of pre-modern culture.

Българските градинари под Южния кръст (Общността на българите в град Аделаида, Южна Австралия)

Author(s): Elya Tsaneva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

The article follows the historical and the contemporary condition of the Bulgarian immigrant community in Adelaide – the capital of the Australian state South Australia. The general idea is that the settlement of the different waves of Bulgarians who have chosen this part of Australia as their second fatherland is due to the similarity of the climate and sustenance with the ones in their native places in Bulgaria. The author also shares her observations of the link which exists between the immigrants and the forms of sustenance inherited and learned at home – gardening in particular, which has been for years on end not just their sustenance, but also the center of their personal and social life and a marker of their place in the new multicultural society situated on thousands of kilometers from their initial homes in Bulgaria.

Практиките на паметта в празника на Джебел

Author(s): Slavka Karakusheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2018

The text analyses the entanglements between the commemorative and the festive aspects of the events organized as anniversaries of the so called “Revival Process” (the forced assimilation of Bulgarian Turks in mid- to late 1980s) and the protests against it. Following the example of the Day of Dzhebel, the study tracks the various forms of remembering the past. On the one hand, it is the “top-down”constructed official memory of the traumatic events presented in the well-established discourses and cultural practices of the commemoration, while on the other hand is the recollection of the shared everyday life that transforms the event into a fest, reviving the memory of the lost social relations in the community.

CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS IN AN OTTOMAN CITY: THE FORMATION OF THE SOCIETY OF EARLY OTTOMAN THESSALONIKI

Author(s): Phokion Kotzageorgis / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

Thessaloniki was the biggest city conquered by the Ottomans before Istanbul. Furthermore, it was conquered by force. Thus, this city is a good example for researchers to understand how the Ottoman state transformed a Byzantine metropolis into an Ottoman one, starting from a zero point – in terms of the population – in 1430. This paper, based on a meticulous analysis of the three extant Ottoman tax registers of the first Ottoman century and a variety of other sources, tries to discern the urban and demographic development until ca. 1530, when the Ottomanization process had been accomplished and Thessaloniki became an Ottoman metropolis, having, together with Edirne, the highest population in the Balkans.
