This collective monograph consists from 15 chapters written by Slovak historians and other social scientists who tried to sketch the life in inter-war Slovakia. The chapters are focusing on politics and economy but mostly on social and cultural aspects of the life of society. The authors tried to answer the basic question: how was the period of 20 years, from the emergence of Czechoslovakia in 1918 till the introduction of the Slovak autonomy in 1938, with its democratic, national, cultural, institutional, technical and economical changes refl ected in everyday life of common people. From this prospective, the authors came with lot of new, interesting and challenging outcomes of their research. As a result of that, this book creates an original and colorful image of the history of Slovakia in Czechoslovakia. One of its goals was to turn over the attention of experts and broader audience to the topics from the Slovak history that have not been favored by the Slovak historiography before.

The presented monograph is a result of a meeting, where the Slovak journalists and historians came together in order to discuss the events of 1968 and the indispensable role of mass media in the reform process in Czechoslovakia, which is generally known as the „Prague Spring”. While the historians were stressing both the importance and the contribution of Slovak and Czech media for the evolution and the take-off of the reform process in the cultural context of the 1960s and the significance of historical milestones of the year 1968, the journalists-eyewitnesses of these events were remembering their own evaluation of the unforgettable atmosphere of that time.

Resume - Slovakia and the World in the 20th Century

Resume - Slovakia and the World in the 20th Century

Author(s): Matej Hanula / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The chapters of the 20th century history creating this book deal with the important moments from the history of modern Slovakia in the changing world. The authors – friends and disciples of PhDr. Valarián Bystrický, DrSc. – are presenting here the newest results of their research and its critical evaluation. What they all have in common with Valerián Bystrický is the conviction that the 20th century Slovakia kept the same developing rhythm as the rest of the world. They agree with his opinion that the Slovak history of this period has to be studied and interpreted from a global perspective. The detailed knowledge of internal changes in Slovakia following its separation from Hungary, of amalgamating the Czechs and Slovaks in the common Czechoslovak state with all its internal and international problems and with its Central European political, economical and cultural context, enables to understand also the contemporary shape of the Slovak Republic – a sovereign state and a member of the European Union.

The Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences honors with this collective monograph the 70th jubilee of the one of its outstanding colleagues and friends – PhDr. Ivan Kamenec, CSc. Although Mr. Kamenec studies and interprets the modern Slovak history of the 20th century in its complexity, his lifelong scientific interest belongs to the Slovak Republic during World War II, especially its political history and personalities. He is to be counted to the top rated Slovak historians in this field. But in the first place his name in the history of the Slovak historical science is connected with the pioneer role in researching the Holocaust in Slovakia. Before 1989 he had been the first to open this taboo theme and the years later his research results inspired the whole group of new historians and brought Dr. Kamenec the international respect among Holocaust specialists.
