The Analog-Digital Distinction Fails to Explain the Perception-Thought Distinction: An Alternative Account of the Format of Mental Representation

The Analog-Digital Distinction Fails to Explain the Perception-Thought Distinction: An Alternative Account of the Format of Mental Representation

Author(s): Piotr Kozak / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The format of mental representation is the way information is organized in the mind. The discussion surrounding the format of representation addresses the problem of what representational primitives are and the rules of information processing. In philosophy, the discussion is dominated by the distinction between analog and digital representational systems. It is thought that this distinction can bring us closer to an understanding of the nature of perceptual and discursive representations.I argue that the analog-digital distinction cannot meet that expectation. The analog-digital distinction is neither sufficient nor necessary to explain the distinction between perceptual and discursive representations (and perception and thinking, respectively). I propose an alternative interpretation of the concept of representational format which provides us a better understanding of the difference between iconic and discursive representations. I explain the differences between formats of representations in terms of differences in information processing. I demonstrate, how this alternative interpretation of the concept of the representational format can explain the constraints put on the contents of representational systems.

Die Textsorte „medizinischer Lehrtext“ aus diachronischer Perspektive: die Darstellung von Alessandra Zurolo am Beispiel deutscher medizinischer Texte vom 13. bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts

Author(s): Marcelina Kałasznik / Language(s): German Issue: 30/2021

The article describes the monograph by Alessandra Zurolo Deutsche medizinische Lehrtexte. Eine diachronische Perspektive published by Verlag Frank & Timme in 2020. In her study, the author deals with German medical teaching texts from different eras and discusses their characteristic features on different levels, on the one hand to point out certain patterns of their design and on the other hand to follow their historical development. By showing the functional similarities of the researched texts, the author succeeds in presenting medical teaching texts as a class of text types. The diachronic perspective of the study also makes it possible to answer the question of what influence the analyzed textbooks have on modern textbooks. The aim of the article presented here is to discuss the results of Zurolo’s analysis.

Collective Subjectivity in the Essay Film

Collective Subjectivity in the Essay Film

Author(s): Mieke Bal / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

It may seem paradoxical to devote a reflection on “self representation,” as the title of this special issue has it, to the fundamentally collective nature of authorship. But in fact, it is not; for the subjectivity that shines through the essay, hence, also the essay film, is anchored in collectivity. Authorship always is, but in the essay, with its hesitant, even stuttering discourse, even more obviously so. And this makes the subjectivity, in its collective nature, more conspicuous (see “Chalenging and Saving”). Which, I suppose, is the rationale for this special issue of Ekphrasis. The essayistic is in the expression but also in the reception, the reading or watching. How can the author-as-filmmaker then represent herself without turning the self into a main character, as in “first-person” filmic discourse? I will argue that it is precisely because of the collective nature of subjectivity that this is possible, without falling into the traps of narcissism.

Ben Russell a publicat prima dată lucrarea The Economics of the Roman Stone Trade în anul 2013, republicată în format fizic pe hârtie în 2019. Aceasta este parte din seria Oxford Studies of the Roman Economy. Autorul este cercetător în cadrul Universității Edinbugh, School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Lucrarea are 9 capitole, incluzând introducerea și concluziile.

Author(s): Michał Lis / Language(s): Polish Issue: 88-89/2021

The appearance of the 100th anniversaries of the Silesian Uprisings in the historic calendar of official events in 2019, 2020 and 2021 signifies their place in Poland’s most recent history. Such a state of affairs constitutes the pretext expressed by the author of the paper who postulates an updated and revised edition of the Silesian Uprisings’ Encyclopaedia originally published in 1982. It should include the elimination of errors and lacks exhibited in the critical reviews written by the acclaimed historians as well as the implementation of the contents that were impossible to appear in academic and popular publications due to censorship of the so-called real socialism era. Finally, the paper postulates the enlargement of the perspective by including the German side of the conflict represented by German historians invited to collaboration.
