Author(s): Peter Karpinský / Language(s): Slovak Issue: 1/2024

The article celebrates the 90th birthday of Associate Professor Ladislav Bartko, a significant figure in Slovak linguistics and literary history. His research focused on dialects, particularly in the Abov region, and he collaborated on studies of Slovak dialects in Ukraine. FAȚETE ALE UNOR NAUFRAGII: CIVILIZAȚIA SALVATOARE

Author(s): Lucian Vasile Bâgiu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2024

The essay is a comparative analysis of the way in which salvation is presented into three novels dealing with shipwrecks and outcasts: Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954), Tournier’s Friday, or The Other Island (1967), and Coetzee’s Foe (1986). Through the comparative analysis of three novels of the 20th century, the essay highlights how the shipwreck of the representatives of European civilization on an exotic, deserted and uninhabited island leads to a similar solution, of the impossibility of salvation in the framework of the same civilization. The difference in vision from the happy end feature of the Robinson myth established by Daniel Defoe is self-imposed and proves an acute crisis of modern man’s consciousness, but also an aesthetic awareness of the fact that, a few hundred years away from the establishment of the modern myth, European civilization can no longer feed on its own illusions.

Teaching Romanian as a foreign language is a relatively new field of study, which owes its evolution and openness to alterity as a form of globalisation and facilitation of mutual knowledge. Multiculturality and interculturality are tangible aspects of our daily activity and not just mere theoretical concepts that hardly find their applicability in everything that concerns our existential horizon. In an ever-changing society, it is necessary to articulate coherently one's personal identity and self-image, so that dialogue can be carried out in an appropriate and informed manner, and so as to promote knowledge of the other from as many points of view as possible, especially when learning a foreign language.
