In recent years, the perception of the task and role of libraries in the local environment, their place in the cultural, scientific, educational and information infrastructure, their role in political life, the development of democracy, economy and the formation of the global information space has changed a lot. The library is increasingly emerging as an organizer of programs and activities that are not just related to the book. On their own, they cannot accomplish all the numerous tasks that the environment expects, so partnership and cooperation with other institutions and organizations is needed to provide the necessary services to their increasingly demanding users. The article presents attempts to establish partnerships of the “Detko Petrov” Library in Tsaribrod with the Ombudsman of the Republic of Serbia, with local institutions and media and non-governmental organizations and the importance of these partnerships for both the library and the local multicultural community.

It is a real rarity for an animated films workshop to be part of a public library's activities. This is exactly the privilege of the young people from Nis, who since 2005, under the watchful eye of the instructor of the Studio for Animated Films'98, have managed to enjoy mastering the technique of moving pictures and to create their first cartoons in the reading room of the Children's Department. The article describes the functioning of this workshop, through which several hundred students from the upper grades of primary schools and children from secondary schools have passed so far. Thanks to this program, many participants chose art for their future profession. We often organize professional gatherings dedicated to the problems of young people: how to arouse their interest in reading and the library, as well as how to create conditions, creatively and constructively, for them to use their free time in the library. One solution is the animated film workshop as an example of proven good practice.

Dr. Angela Dimcheva – literary critic, presented on October 22 this year in the “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library the second edition of the novel ILLUSIO MAGNA by the prominent doctor, rheumatologist, writer and screenwriter Prof. Zlatimir Kolarov. Dr. Dimcheva defines the novel as a deep penetration into the field of psychoanalysis. And just as any illusion is magnetic, so this novel captures the reader's attention not with dialogues, but by building a visible artistic convention in which the characters speak too little. The novel is a baseline of the newly born film Ashes on the Sun, which premiered (in Bulgaria) at the end of October 2020.

Fr. Dariusz Wiśniewski devoted his next book to the complicated and still relevant problem of the inter-religious relations between Latin Christians and Muslims. This time he has focused on the activity of St. Francis and the Order of Friars Minor during the 13th century. In those days, the Latin Christians were involved in the Crusades, missions and diplomatic affairs in Iberia, North Africa and the Holy Land. St. Francis and the Franciscans were among the loyal supporters of the papacy. At some point they had created their own policy towards Muslims as well. The author of the book brought the opinion that St. Francis and his disciples were fanatic pacifists in question. He proved that both the authorities and the members of the Order accepted the Crusades and missions as a different, but still acceptable way leading to the conversion of Muslims as the idea of preaching the Gospel of Christ to all the people in the world was one of the most important tasks of the Order. One may criticise some of the author’s decisions regarding the structure of the book and question some of his opinions that were not proved sufficiently. Fr. Dariusz Wiśniewski’s book is nevertheless both interesting and inspiring as it proves that there are several serious problems to be discussed and solved regarding this particular topic.

The formation of the information and scientific-cultural space is the most important task of the libraries. Today, when the world is affected by an unprecedented pandemic and people live in isolation libraries are in front of extremely great challenge. The work of libraries in a remote duty acquires a great importance because it is carried out in new conditions with help of the modern information technologies. The activities for the realization of this pressing task are focused in two main directions: 1. Inner library work. 2. Readers facilities. The library activity in the Central Library of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the present situation was implemented at a remote mode of operation – a retroconversion of the library catalogs and digitization of the rare documents from our collections. From 13.03 to 13.05.2020 more than 8000 bibliographic records were created and 17 titles in 5141 files were displayed in digital collections. The work in the national scientific program Cultural and historical heritage, national memory and social development whose implementation was not ceased during these two months, consisted in editing of more than 1000 bibliographic records and displaying of 11 periodical titles (38 series in 6130 files). Remote duty was in force for all of the current initiatives, which were carried out before the state of emergency and were periodically displayed and disseminated on the website of the Library and its facebook page. The reader services during this period were, of course, not provided in the traditional way. The policy of our Library is to offer an open access to all of its resources. Our digital library encompasses 20 collections – 3943 titles, 282 383 files. During this period an abrupt increase in the use of the electronic catalog and the digital collections was observed.Indeed, this does not represent the full range of the versatile library activities and is by no means an alternative to the traditional library work, but we do believe that it is a big step forward and we will continue to work hard in this direction in the near future.
