The introductory chapter gives a theoretical outline of the term "crusades". This term was only introduced by the historians during the 19th century. Historians, depending of their national background, also gave different data on the total number of crusades. The author gives his methodological model for the research of crusades, dividing them according to the theologic and geographic terms of reference. It is important to distinguish whether crusades were "contra paganos" or "contra haereticos et schismaticos" and geographic position of war operations is equally important. If we take these elements into account, it is not easy to define each crusade. Difference between European centre and peripheral aereas must also be taken into account. All communities which possesed two vital elements - religious and political - gave continuous support to the crusades' idea. Therefore they were considered to belong to the centre of Europe (southern Italy under Norman control, Normandy province in France and Frisia). All other communities were considered peripheral.

Stari pokrajinski katalog ili Katalog provincija Opće Crkve

Provinciale vetus sive Ecclesiae universae provinciarum notitia is a complex source in which one of the oldest catalogues of the Catholic bishoprics can be found. The source was dated in the period of Charlemagne (768-814) and grouped together with documents and codexes from his era, inspite the fact that some data are from the later centuries. It is evident that content and structure of this source is very complex, including the data form different periods: we can identify several authors and redactors of the source. Also, we can compare this source with the Liber censum Romanae Ecclesiae, a list of the bishoprics, abbeys, chapters and some lay institutions subjected to the Roman Church, which had the financial and other obligations towards it. This document was written in 1192 by papal chamberlain Sabellus Cencius. Provinciale vetus sive Ecclesiae universae provinciarum notitia is rich with data form early-medieval Christian history. The analysis of its content shows that this source contains documents from different periods. It is evident that already in the early-medieval period the author who was not really a connoisseur of religious and political history revised it. This conclusion was made already by an editor who published Medieval sources in the mid-19th century. The publication was equipped with rich critical apparatus, but remains unclear why the source Provinciale vetus sive Ecclesiae universae provinciarum notitia, containing documents from later periods, was published together with the documents and codexes from the period of Charles the Great. Some authors have been ignoring this source, or have used its information in a negative sense. This source, however, should be used by researches of the Late Antiquity and Early medieval History in comparison with other sources and using critical methodology .

Pressed By a Double Loyalty. Hungarian Attendance at the Second Vatican Council, 1959-1965

The history of the Second Vatican Council and the history of the policy of openness towards the East-Central European Communist countries, that is, the so called Vatican “Ostpolitik,” were looked at until now as two separate topics of research. The virtue of András Fejérdy’s work is to demonstrate, at the end of a thorough-going study through various available archives (first of all of the party and state, but also ecclesiastical ones), that it is not like that, but in reality the two topics are closely linked. Analyzing the history of the Hungarian presence at Vatican II in the context of the Hungarian Church policy and the evolution of the relations between the Holy See and Hungary, the book reveals that in consequence of the interests of the Holy See and the Hungarian party-state related to the Council—from the perspective of Hungary—Vatican II was not primarily an ecclesial event, but it remained closely joined to the negotiations between the Holy See and Hungary. During the Council, Hungary became the experimental laboratory of the Vatican’s new eastern policy.

Ова књига представља прилагођен и делимично измењен текст магистарског рада Обредно-релишјска пракса и етницитет верника српских православних парохија у Калифорнији, одбрањеног у децембру 2002. године на Одељењу за етнологију и антропологију Филозофског факултета Универзитета у Београду. Рад је настао као део пројекта Етнографског института САНУ број 2157: Традиционална култура Срба — системи представа, обреда и социјалних институција, који финансира Министарство за науку и технологију Републике Србије. Желела бих да се захвалим овом министарству чији сам стипендиста била током постдипломских студија, као и Министарству културе које је финансирало моје путне тропжове до Лос Анђелеса. Захваљујем се свим колегама у Етнографском институту САНУ чијим сам се искуством користила приликом израде рада. Народни и црквени брак у српском сеоском друштву

From historical fact of overlapping life of Serbian folk and its orthodox church result imperative of studding and observing institution of marriage among Serbs in the light of Christian orthodox church dogma and ideology. Short review of history of Serbian Orthodox Church points at substantial part that it had taken in different aspects of Serbian folk life what is shown through study exhibited in this work. As a basic (ideological) frame of studding the categories related to the marriage it is taken church law respectively system of norms from customary law which show high rate of mutual similarity (which origin as a result of mutual influence of those two systems), but also certain differences which are notify as a fruit of specific social, historical and cultural conditions. Methodological problems that are notify in wor, point out necessity of more thoroughly studding of so called "traditional society" model that would consider first of all, serious critic of ethnological sources and redefinition of certain ideas and concepts. As temporal frame of researched models it is taken the period of relative stability of traditional family and system of ethical norms that it represents and which ends when the process of "stormy transformation" started in the beginning of 20th century. Still, in work there are shortly presented also the elements of new age model of marriage which only purpose was to point out the direction of changes in mentioned spheres and necessity for their thoroughly research.

The book analyses Sigismund’s of Luxembourg lien on ecclesiastical goods as an instrument of his financial policy in the Kingdom of Bohemia. At first, it presents available resources and historical literature on the subject. The main part of the book is an analysis of Sigismund’s pledges on ecclesiastical goods in chronological order. This analysis is supplemented by a probe into the proportions of the Chotěšov and Zbraslav monasteries. An important part of the publication is also a catalogue of over 400 pledges and other similar acts and documents important for understanding the mechanism of pledges on ecclesiastical goods.

Aspects of the Bible's Philosophy on the Development of the World's Civilizations

It is worth noting how a secular perspective can be harmonized with what the Holy Scriptures present and especially how the text of the Scripture becomes relevant in a context in which we are talking about the development of the world's civilizations. If we were to make a bridge between secular man and religious man on the same subject we could have a common element, namely the analysis of human society, related to how it developed, related to the mechanisms of this development and its consequences, things that we meet them both in the same material of history with the differentiation of the fact that different causes could arise. In this study we tried to show that human explanations, regarding the development of the world's civilizations, are not always enough, because according to human logic certain events could not have taken place. From this perspective, looking at things, we consider it important to know the Scriptural perspective on events unfolding in world history, because the revelation of Scripture usually goes somewhere further, beyond what we see and what we have recorded as events in history, penetrating somewhere in the heart of the problems, helping us to have a much broader vision of the events of our world.

The book addresses the much-neglected topic of permeating of nationalist ideas into spaces of Catholic worship and of Catholic-nationalist discourses being monumentalised by means of church art. The field of research is Upper Silesia - an area of competition between supporters of various identity programs. The author shows how from the beginning of the 20th century to modern times the elites of the Church, supported by artists and public authorities, used art to build nations and other imagined communities. Moreover, he analyzes iconographic programs and narratives, associating themes and motifs with myths, symbols and historiosophical constructs. The book gives an image of the dilemmas faced by Catholics in the era of intensive nation-building processes.

Various studies conclude that there is a strong link between Protestantism’s behavioral patterns, concepts of secular ethics and religious doctrines of Protestantism.

Naučni odbor je pripremio autorske referate za učesnike Okruglog stola “75. Godišnjica Trećeg zasjedanja ZAVNOBiH-a: uloga Trećeg zasjedanja ZAVNOBiH-a u društvenom i političkom razvoju Bosne i Hercegovine” za štampu. Program Okruglog stola sastojao se od uvodnih obraćanja i 14 referata. Redoslijed radova u ovom zborniku u najvećoj mjeri slijedi redoslijed izlaganja referata pripremljenih za Okrugli sto, koji se trebao održati krajem 2020. godine, međutim zbog nezahvalne epidemiološke situacije izazvane virusom COVID-19, nije bilo mogućnosti njegovo održavanje. Akademik Ivo Cvitković je naglasio da većina pripadnika pokreta nisu bili komunisti, ali su oni bili organizatori antifašističke borbe. Postavio je sljedeća pitanja: za šta se borio NOP, politika NOF-e; uvođenje zvanja vjerskog referenta, primjeri odnosa narodnooslobodilačkog pokreta prema slobodi religije, sloboda vjeronauke i osnivanje “vjerske komisije”? Posebnu pažnju je posvetio religiji i crkvi na Trećem zasjedanju ZAVNOBiH-a i pitanjima: vjerski službenici, diskusije u kojima se kritički osvrtalo na religiju i religijske zajednice, biranje sveštenika u ZAVNOBiH, gdje je pošlo “ukrivo”, zašto je došlo do promjena odnosa prema religiji i crkvi i začeci netrpeljivosti?

The Church is essentially both human and divine. It is a sign of hope in which mysteries of God are revealed within the reality of human cultures. Among the main characteristics of Coptic Christianity is a tendency to the profound spirituality; the spirituality between the culture of city and the culture of desert. Throughout history the Egyptian Christian tradition has adopted Coptic, Greek and Arabic culture. From the nineteenth century onwards, also the cultural influences of modern Europe has been intensified. It brought to Egypt new theological impulses. The doctrine of the deification of man was in the second half of the twentieth century promoted in Egypt by Matthew the Poor and his disciples. And soon it became the subject of a theological dispute. It is significant for the time of cultural exchange that among the main impulses there was a compilation of texts on prayer written in English by Lazarus Moore. It actually determined the framework of his theological thinking. Among his opponents there was his former pupil and further Alexandrian patriarch Pope Shenouda III. The presented work might be described as a follow up of the already published monograph on Matthew the Poor. It presents a theological analysis of the work of the Alexandrian Patriarch Shenouda III with the focus on his critique of the doctrine of the deification of man. The analysis is a search for the causes of the dispute over the doctrine of the deification of man and it also presents the results within the context of newly emerging cultural paradigms of Coptic Christianity.

Skrytá církev a interpretace soudobých dějin

The historical interpretation of recent events (contemporary history) has its familiar features. The very fact that historians not only work with sources but also with eyewitnesses who are often associated with them creates special demands for the ‘weaving of the narrative’. Historical knowledge not only clashes with the social (collective) memory but also with the ever-changing interpretations of the individual actors themselves. Therefore, in addition to reconstructing events and interpreting them, the historian also has to re-interpret already-existing narratives. The historian of contemporary events constructs a story within a context which society is familiar with first-hand. Therefore, it not only has the meaning of a symbol which can be related to the past, but it has its own specific, emotional, strategic or directly socio-political dimension. Put simply, the historian of contemporary history not only has to work with historical material and the interpretations which already exist around it, but also with (his/her and collective) experiences, prejudices and interests. None of this is straightforward.

On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the coronation of the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević, by the papal legates in November 1461 in Jajce, the Croatian Institute of History from Zagreb and the Catholic Faculty of Theology from Sarajevo marked this event in 2011 with a special scientific conference. This event, which soon proved to be a direct prelude to the collapse of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom, was commemorated with the aim of gaining new insights and deepening knowledge about this historiographical topic. Although both Stjepan Tomašević himself and the collapse of the medieval Bosnian Kingdom have been subjects of interest in Croatian, Bosnian-Herzegovinian, and Serbian historiography, as evidenced by numerous previously published works, the mentioned anniversary provided an opportunity for a fresh examination and deepening of understanding of this historical theme. The international scientific conference "Stjepan Tomašević (1461-1463) - The Collapse of the Medieval Bosnian Kingdom," held on November 11th and 12th, 2011 in Jajce, gathered distinguished scholars from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Hungary. Their presentations, collected in this anthology, constitute four comprehensive thematic sections.

Split 1980-ih, društveni sukobi u sutonu samoupravnoga socijalizma

The book portrays the main political, social, and economic events and issues in the city of Split during the last decade of communist rule, from the death of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito in 1980 to the first multiparty elections held in 1990. It is based on extensive research of various sources, including the press, as well as archival sources, documents from the League of Communists, the State Security Service, and the then-Assembly of the Municipality of Split. The first part depicts the activities of socio-political organizations (such as party and youth organizations), the second part focuses on the economy of Split, the third part addresses specific social problems (housing, economic crime, industrial pollution), and the fourth and final part of the book deals with the regime's attitude toward Croatian nationalism, the Catholic Church, the echoes of Slobodan Milošević's "anti-bureaucratic revolution" in Split, the establishment of new political parties, and the results of the first multiparty elections in Split. The book follows the situation in Split during a decade of pronounced economic, social, and political crisis in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Bouřlivý příběh: Postavení katolíků v Čínské lidové republice

The book introduces the situation and development of the Catholic Church in the People’s Republic of China from its foundation in 1949 to the present (2022). It provides both historical context and contemporary information about the Chinese Catholics. It examines the diverse groups of Catholics established in the territory of the People’s Republic of China belonging to both the official state-run Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association and believers in the so-called underground church, which is not sanctioned by the Chinese authorities. The book examines the political and social dilemmas facing the church under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

The Role of Religious Education in Promoting Active Pluralism in Belgium

This article explores the concept of "active pluralism" and its relevance in the current educational landscape, contrasting it with traditional models of religious education such as mono-religious and multireligious approaches. By examining educational theories and practices, the article highlights the advantages of interreligious education, which encourages active dialogue and empathetic understanding among students of different faiths. Additionally, the challenges and criticisms of passive pluralism are discussed, along with solutions for more effective implementation of interreligious education. The study focuses on the historical and educational context of Belgium, offering insights into how active pluralism can be effectively integrated into school curricula. The conclusions suggest that active pluralism and interreligious education are essential for developing an inclusive society capable of managing religious diversity in a constructive and harmonious manner.
