Șase decenii de la un binecuvântat eveniment din istoria moaștelor Sfintei Cuvioase Parascheva — generalizarea cultului ei (octombrie 1955 — octombrie

Author(s): Ion Vicovan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 05+08/2015

Although the Romanian nation gave birth, over time, to many saints, their first canonization took place in 1950, in the time of Patriarch Justinian Marina (1948-1977). It also degreed the cult generalization of saints whose relics are in our country. Among the saints whose cult was extended a special attention was given to the cult of Saint Pious Paraskeva, „the house chandler of Moldova”, whose holy relics were brought to Iasi in 1641, in time of pious prince Vasile Lupu and holy bishop and scholar Varlaam. The event of Saint Paraskeva’s cult generalization was held on 14 October 1955, in the time of Metropolitan Sebastian Rusan (1950-1956), during the feast celebration. This was attended by Romanian and foreign hierarchs, a lot of priests, monks, nuns and believers. From this liturgical and spiritual event of exceptional importance we celebrate in this year six decades.

Англиканската църква, Източното православие и България (XIX – средата на ХХ в.) Част втора.

Author(s): Zhivko Lefterov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2015

The first contacts of the Anglican Church with the Eastern Orthodoxy date from the early 17th century and launch a process of rapprochement, which is well known in the international historiography. Over the centuries, until today it has a different intensity depending on the degree of theological negotiations and political situation. The study traces the impact of this process among the Bulgarian Orthodox community and among Bulgarian society, how Bulgarians form their perceptions of the Anglican Church and to what extent the subject goes out of theological dialogue and is publicly known and discussed, and hence politically exploited. The author traces the attitudes and positions which the representatives of the Anglican Church occupy regarding major events related to Bulgaria, and Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the 19th and early 20th century; how individual public officials try to see farther than purely theological dialogue and to use sporadically, albeit unsuccessfully, the benevolence of the Anglican Church to Eastern Orthodoxy in the context of the national tasks that need to be resolved. During the Second World War and the Cold War Anglican-Orthodox rapprochement becomes part of big politics and is influenced by Stalin‘s religious policy. Initially, Stalin relies on the Anglican Church for expansion of Orthodox influence in international organizations, but later he begins to consider it as a rival and opponent. Consequently, the dialogue is restored only after Stalin‘s death, but on the part of Orthodox churches of the socialist camp and particularly Bulgaria it will be subject to the religious policy of „opening“ led by communist parties, which aims to use the churches in the big propaganda war between Orient and Occident about the existing religious freedom behind the Iron Curtain.

Англиканската църква, Източното православие и България (XIX – средата на ХХ в.). Част първа

Author(s): Zhivko Lefterov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5-6/2014

The first contacts of the Anglican Church with Eastern Orthodoxy date from the early 17th century and they initiated a process of rapprochement, which is well known in the international historiography. Over the centuries, to this day it has a different intensity depending on the degree of theological negotiations and the political situation. This study traces the impact of this process among the Bulgarian Orthodox community and among Bulgarian society, how perceptions of the Anglican church were formed among Bulgarians and furthermore whether the topic went out of theological dialogue and was publicly known and discussed, and hence politically exploited. The author tracks the attitudes and positions of the representatives of the Anglican Church to the main events related to Bulgaria, and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in the 19th and early 20th century. He reveals how individual public representatives tried to see farther than purely theological dialogue and sporadically, albeit unsuccessfully, to use thefavor of the Anglican Church to Eastern Orthodoxy in the context of the national tasks that had to be resolved. During the Second World War and the Cold War Anglican-Orthodox rapprochement became part of big politics and was influenced by Stalin‘s religious policy. Although Stalin initially relied on the Anglican Church to expand Orthodox influence in international organizations, subsequently he started considering it to be a competitor and opponent. As a consequence the dialogue was restored after the death of Stalin, but in the countries from the socialist camp and particularly Bulgaria the Orthodox Churches followed the Communist Party religious policy of „opening“ which aimed to use the churches in the big propaganda war between East and West showing that there was religious freedom behind the Iron curtain.

Author(s): Galin Penev / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 4/2016

Демоничните образи на Баба Марта и Дядо Коледа

Author(s): Irina Kolarska / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2020

Baba Marta and Santa Claus are two characters who are usually related to a series of positive emotions because of the expectation to receive gifts bringing joy, hopes and expectations. The dark side of the character of Baba Marta has been studied many times but it has not been investigated or analyzed in regards to Santa Claus. This text will make an attempt to present a different point of view to the two characters, which has never been in the focus of attention of folklore studies – the one of evangelical Protestantism. The reason for it is the feeling of its followers that their opinion is not taken into consideration and is thus silenced and suppressed. I will make an attempt to draw impartial theses and antitheses, as well as to do an analysis and summary of the results. In addition, I will seek to find if these two characters belong to paganism or to folklore and to outline the reason for their demonization according to evangelical Protestantism.

Author(s): Ivan (hegumen Justin) Stojanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 6/2020

Bishop of Šumadija dr. Sava Vuković (⁕1930†2001) is considered one of the most prominent bishops of our Serbian Orthodox Church. He has marked his era as a respected hierarch, a church historian, a literate, a liturgist, as well as an excellent organizer of the church life in the dioceses that were assigned to his lead and care. In the currently available literature on his life and activity there are less details about his work in the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Timișoara, where he acted as bishopadministrator for sixteen full years. This fact inspired us to perform a research on this period of this historical and important Diocese’s existence and on dr. Sava’s work in it. The complex and irregular status of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Timișoara, which lasted from 1919 until the fall of the communist regime in 1989, left a painful mark and a lot of consequences on the life of the Serbian Church in Romania. Being an able diplomat, bishop dr. Sava managed, in those conditions, to properly organize the functioning of the Diocese and set up serios fundations for the upcoming generations. The activity of bishop dr. Sava as administrator of the Diocese of Timișoara between 1980 and 1996 was fruitful on all fields.

Естетична символіка сакрального в українському мистецтві X V n-X V m ст.

Author(s): Victoriia Mykolayivna Pishchanska / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 2/2017

The purpose of the research is to analyze the aesthetic symbolism of the sacral in the artistic and picturesque expression of the Cossack art, where the true essence of the spiritual world of the Ukrainian Cossacks is reproduced in full. The methodology of the research consists in the application of methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization, as well as in the use of ideological and content, terminological, historical and cultural approaches. This has made it possible to reveal the peculiarities of the spirituality of the Ukrainian Cossacks, which proved capable of conveying the main thing in its artistic creativity - its syncretic essence, the unity of religious and aesthetic, expressed in the Baroque art in the form of symbols. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that in the national cultural studies it is the first attempt of the new interpretation of the content of the symbols or artistic values created by the Ukrainian Cossacks. The principles of forming the syncretic essence, the unity of religious and aesthetic, expressed in the Baroque art in the form of symbols, that are a peculiar representation of the sacred in the spiritual culture of the Ukrainian Cossacks, are characterized. Conclusion. It is proved that, while honoring Ukrainian ethno cultural traditions, recognizing the dogmatic principles of Orthodox beliefs and experiencing the artistic tendencies of the Baroque, the Ukrainian Cossacks proved capable of conveying the main thing in its artistic creativity - its syncretic essence, the unity of religious and aesthetic, expressed in Baroque art in the form of symbols. It is substantiated that the spiritual principles of the culture of the Ukrainian Cossacks in the XVII-XVIII centuries had a significant influence not only on artistic education and further development of the Ukrainian art, but also on the confirmation of the aesthetic symbolism of the sacral through the iconography of symbolic images and signs. Above all they are reflected on the embodied in its spiritual essence the entire complex of religious and aesthetic principles of the Ukrainian people's culture, its moral and ethical, philosophical and value judgments and beliefs.

Живот и дело Јоакима из Флоре (1130/1135–1201/1202) – кратак осврт –

Author(s): Miroslav M. Popović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2013

Joachim of Fiore is one of the most interesting personalities of western late medieval church life, who was recognized as prophet in his lifetime. With his work he predicted foundation of Franciscan and Dominican orders, and left influence on spiritual Franciscans, heretical groups – Apostolic Brethren, Fraticelli, Provençal Beguines, but also on Augustinian hermits and Jesuits. Joachimist influence can be traced to the 17th century, and there is an echo of his work in writings of 18th and 19th century thinkers.

За една „ария на клеветата“

Author(s): Erika Lazarova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 4/2016

The article reveals the scientific incompetence and complete lack of elementary scholarly ethics in A. Stoynev’s quasi-review. It is demonstrated how a superficial reading and lack of familiarity with classical and contemporary scientific sources leads to miscomprehension of the theses regarding dualist Christianity, the genetic link between Bogomilism and Catharism, the pan-ethical and pan-European character of Bogomilism, the immaterial church of dualist heretics, etc. Stoynev’s views on Christianity are hopelessly outdated; moreover, he is evidently not familiar with the genuine meaning of the concept of „heresy“, which means CHOICE, not „falling away from the true faith“. The article exposes the motivation underlying the review in question: the conscious intention to discredit a colleague.

The exhibition, presented at the “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” National Library, tells the Bulgarian church movement story and the creation and rise of the Bulgarian Exarchy. The Exarchy is a national socio-political representation of the Bulgarian people in its struggles to resolve the national liberation process. In addition to religious-educational and social goals, the Exarchy also performs purely political tasks. The most important function of the Exarchy is its central role for national uniication, for raising the national idea, for the national question at all.

Између интерконфесионализма и пуноће

Author(s): Miroslav P. Popović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1-3/2009

In the teaching of protestant denominations, concerning the possibility of establishing confessional fullness on the levels of dogmas and tradition, the entire complexity of understanding of inter- confessionalism with all its particular weaknesses (from the Orthodox point of view at least) is summarized by reduction on “common denominator”. This article, while dealing with crucial segments of ontological- dialectical issues searching for “long lost” unity, could, somewhat, approach the content which should be entitled “The Crossroads of Ecumenical Dialogue”. That would be an enormous and a detailed subject, ungrateful for time and space ahead of us, so we will restrict to semantic- theological partitioning of concepts and terms and their sense and meaning, to a certain section through reflections in order to discover various layers of senses and meanings.

Иностранное присутствие в Палестине в дневниках и заметках русских путешественников конца XIX — начала ХХ в.

Иностранное присутствие в Палестине в дневниках и заметках русских путешественников конца XIX — начала ХХ в.

Author(s): M. S. Shapovalov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 25/2018

The paper is based on the notes of Russian travelers to Palestine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and explores the history of foreign presence in the Holy Land at this time, when the flow of pilgrims from Russia to Palestine greatly increased. Biblical Palestine began to attract representatives of the clergy, monks, and worshipers as well as representatives of the nobility, intellectuals, writers, artists, journalists, teachers, and august persons. This long journey — through the outskirts of the empire, the Turkish straits, and finally Palestine itself — presupposed, first of all, a spiritual and intellectual quest. Therefore, pilgrims often kept diaries and hiking notes, and sent detailed letters to relatives, thus leaving a layer of sources of personal origin. The most famous of these are notes by E. I. Tarasov, I. N. Bartsikhovsky, E. L. Markov, G. A. Gorbunov, V. Vereshchagin, N. P. Kondakov, and others. Once in the Holy Land, travelers reflected on the surrounding reality, nature, and everyday customs of local residents and foreign tourists. A special place in the Palestinian narrative was occupied by the theme of foreign presence, which revealed itself in the description of the confessional, economic, political, cultural, and philanthropic activities of European states in the Holy Land. In this connection, the author sets out to reconstruct the forms of foreign presence and to answer the following questions: What alignment of forces of the European powers did Russian travelers see in Palestine? Who, in their opinion, posed the greatest threat to Russian interests in the Holy Land?
