Fašismus jako radikální lidová revoluce Poznámky k povaze ideologických režimů s ohledem na poválečný vývoj v Československu – I. část

Author(s): Petr Placák / Language(s): Czech Issue: 23/2013

The author includes events in Czechoslovakia between 1945–1948 in a pan-European context of the non-democratic mass movements at the end of and after the First World War. These movements were called fascist, with the term fascism understood primarily as political activism, which refers to the abstract concept of people and does not feel limited by any existing constitutional, legal, social, or other order. The first of the two parts of the study is focused primarily on comparing German National Socialism with Stalinist Communism and the Soviet Union. This comparison (named by subchapter – Restrictions of the Period, Propaganda As Part of Democratic Discourse, Antidemocratic Fascism, The Mother of War, The New Man, Anticapitalism As a Link, Classless Society, The Nature of the Movement, Absolute Democracy, The Leadership Principle, The Great War in Czechoslovakia) is the starting point for the author to understand the process of the Communist takeover of post-war Czechoslovakia.

Author(s): Rajka Bućin / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2021

In August 1942, five transports were sent to the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau from the territory of the Independent State of Croatia (ISC), with approximately 5,000 Jews. One of them was sent from Vinkovci with circa 1,000 Jews. It left the territory of the ISC on 19 August, and arrived in Auschwitz on 22 August. The transport has been only partially researched, mostly regarding victims from the Serbian part of the Syrmia region, without taking into account the complete picture, and with various omissions and mistakes. Documents scattered in numerous archival and other heritage institutions, many of them unknown to research communities in Croatia and Serbia, compared with statistical data for inhabitants of the settlements included in the analysis, reveal what was going on with Jewish communities not only in the wider region of Syrmia (Srijem), nowadays in Croatia and Serbia, but also in Bijeljina in Bosnia and Herzegovina, from where Jews were also incorporated into that transport. The analysis includes not only Jews who were sent to Auschwitz via the detention camp in Vinkovci, where they were kept during July and August 1942 (Jews from Vukovar, Županja, Ruma, Sremska Mitrovica, Bijeljina, Ilok, Šid, maybe some from Stara Pazova), but also those who were sent to the concentration camps in Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška from May to August 1942 (Jews from Vinkovci and Zemun, most of the Jews from Stara Pazova, maybe/probably some of those from Ilok and Šid). The paper also includes a review of the destiny of Syrmian and Bijeljina’s Jews during 1941 and in the earlier period of 1942. The Holocaust was almost complete in those areas in August 1942. The only exemption was granted to Jews in mixed marriages and their children, those employed in medical services, and individuals who were exempt on some other basis. Most of them perished in the next wave of deportations in May 1943. The results of the research give a clearer picture of the flow of Holocaust in that part of the territory of the ISC and can be used for the correction and supplementation of the data about victims, not only of the individuals who perished in Auschwitz, registered in the death books from the camp or confirmed as victims of that camp by other sources, but also of those who perished in the concentration camps Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška. Regarding the Croatian part of Syrmia, some new results refer to the victims from Vukovar and Ilok who perished in Auschwitz but were previously linked to the Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška camps. Some of the victims, e.g. those from Županja, were not registered at all, and were mostly deported to Auschwitz. The data for Jews from Vinkovci and Zemun, almost all of whom perished in Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška from May to July 1942, can also be updated from the transfer lists of the Ustasha Surveillance Service (Ustaška nadzorna Služba, UNS) used in this research.

WSPOMNIENIA KS. WINCENTEGO PRZYGODZKIEGO Z POBYTU W OBOZIE PRZEJŚCIOWYM NA RADOGOSZCZU K. ŁODZI (11 LISTOPADA 1939 - 15 STYCZNIA 1940)

Author(s): Paweł Kostrzewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 19/2019

The article presents reminiscence of a parish priest from Wielun, Fr. Wincenty Przygodzki (1870-1947) from living in the Radogoszcz camp, near Lodz. In the pre-war period he was a politico-social activist greatly respected among local people. Thus it is not surprising, that he was arrested by the German occupier within the action against Polish Intelligentsia on 11 November, 1939. Initially the Radogoszcz camp was located in the buildings of former Michael Glazer factory, and from January in 1940 it was moved to the buildings of Samuel Abbe factory. A significant part of reminiscence is a description of conditions in the camp, the lack of hot water, kitchen and proper number of toilets. The prisoners slept on uncarpeted floor, later covered with straw. The Germans were exceptionally brutal towards Polish priests and Jews, using sophisticated tortures and engaging them in the hardest work.

VELEBITSKA SUDBINA PRIČUVNOG PUKOVNIKA NDH DELKA BOGDANIĆA ZEMUNICA NEIDENTIFICIRANIH

Author(s): Josip Grbelja / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2002

This work refers to some documents about the fate of the Indipendent State of Croatia (NDH) colonel Delko Bogdanić and the so called guerilla fighters, then the Croatian Home Guardsmen and Ustashas, which after the Second WW were hid in Velebit from the new partisan authorities. They were divided in several groups of which the last one was caught in 1948. Some of them remained hidden in Velebit forests even after, while some succeded to escape abroad. While describing the official reports about those groups, the author here displays his own reflections on it and at the end, after having represented every individual group, their number and organization, comes to a following conclusion: 1. Many of those guerilla fighters meritted the punishment, but a great majority did not execute any terror or harm to anybody while hid in the mountain. 2. By telling the untrue stories, either panegirics or blames, the fates of those people were diversely interpretted. 3. It remains open the question if Delko Bogdanić was really killed and whether it was he, Delko Bogdanić, the man whom partisans in autumn 1945 exposed dead to the view of the inhabitants of Gospić.

Author(s): Ante Glavičić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/2001

Based on verbal evidences of the war event partakers and the respective documents gained accordingly, the author describes military and political circumstances which took place on the territory of Senj during WVV2 and after that. The author refers to some 50 places where mainly the soldiers of the armed forces of the Indipendent State of Croatia (NDH) lost their lives or were killed and buried. Among then was also one smaller number of partizans and civils from Kozice and Sibinj (commune of Novi Vinodolski),Senj, Sveti Juraj, Lukovo, Jablanac, Prizna and the commune of Karlobag. The majority perished between the 7th-15th April 1945. This article is an important contribution to the researches on developments after WW2. Those were the times when publishing of such facts could produce only troubles. Namely, the communistic system insisted upon presenting the war of the national liberation free from any blame, with positive aspects only.

MJESTA POGIBIJE I POKAPANJA VOJNIKA I CIVILA TIJEKOM DRUGOGA SVJETSKOG RATA NA PODRUČJU OPĆINE KRIVI PUT, KOTAR SENJ

Author(s): Ante Glavičić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/1999

The author describes military and political conditions during the Second World War in the wider region of Senj. In accordance with gathered pieces of information, based on statements made by numerous examinees, the author lists and displays some twenty places where soldiers of various Croatian formations and innocent civilians, who happened to come accross, died (fairly often they were killed) and were buried. The lives of some three hundred people were violently interrupted and buried either in single or mass graves (e.g. 84 people at Likrovac) in the war storms in those places. It goes without saying that the number of deaths was the biggest in the course of April/May 1945. One part of them died in actions around 9/10 April when partisan formations, by fighting through the defense of Ustashas and Domobrans, gained complete control of the wider region of Senj. But, the greatest number was simply killed by shooting, some of them very brutaly, without any legal proceedings or by a prompt and trumped-up proceedings.

STRIJELJANI SENJANI 22. TRAVNJA 1945. U GORNJOJ KOZICI

Author(s): Ante Glavičić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1/1996

After "liberation" of the city of Senj and its districts on 9th April 1945 was formed the "national command". In brutal requital with all those who did not blindly believe in ideas of yugoslavianism and communism, a great number of people from Senj and its suburbs and some others who happened to found themselves there at that moment, were arrested and condemned. Although they mostly did not have other sins, almost all were executed by firing sqads. The same fate befell to those people from Senj who were condemned at Senj and killed at Gornja Kozica (the village less than ten kilometres on the north of Senj). The author deals with the tragic fate of those people on the basis of verbal evidences and according to the excerpts from fixed prejudications of the Military Court of the Yugoslav Army (Council at Sušak), which have been made public as enclosures of this article.

Bestie i ludzie. „Wilkołak” Adriana Panka i figura „hitlerowskiego psa” a semiotyka komunikacji

Author(s): Grzegorz Kapuściński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 8/2020

Guard and hunting dogs played an important role in the organization of Nazi concentration camps. Although ubiquitous in the prisoners’ testimonies as terrifying beasts, they only appear in the cultural consciousness as an ominous ornament of the camp scenery. The figure of the „Nazi dog” occupies a similarly marginal place in the texts of Polish popular culture. The author of the study aims to take a closer look at this motif in collective consciousness, and especially in Polish filmmaking. It also introduces the system in which dogs were used. Embedded in the post-occupational reality, the interesting film by Adrian Panek, ‚The Werewolf’, gives rise to these considerations. Drawing on the aesthetics of horror and fairy tales, this historical image uses the cultural connotations of the figure of a camp dog to show universal truths about the human condition.

Banalnost Heideggera

Author(s): Jean-Luc Nancy / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 26/2021

Author(s): Sabina Subašić-Galijatović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 27/2021

Before the physical destruction of the Jews from Bosnia and Herzegovina, several different laws and regulations, based on antisemitism were adopted. Most of them were adopted in the period of only five months. Their names and sequence show the means of „resolving the Jewish Issue“ on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia that encompassed Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Holocaust of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Jews was conducted following the general pattern of the Nazi ideology. The representatives of the Nazy ideology left the „resolution of the Jewish issue“ and the commitment of crimes to the Ustasha regime. Therefore, this paper will be oriented towards two basic considerations – the emergence of antisemitism on our territory, as an important factor in the commitment of the crimes, and the development of the legal framework of the Nazi regime, and its implementation and further development in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The Shooting of the Jews Is a Fact”: Kyiv’s Non-Jewish Population and the Babyn Yar Massacre, September – October 1941

Author(s): Karel Berkhoff / Language(s): English Issue: 14/2021

Based on a wide range of textual and audiovisual sources, in Ukrainian, Russian, and German, from the war period and the postwar decades, the article offers the first systematic attempt to trace how, in September and October 1941, Ukrainians and other non-Jewish persons in German-occupied Kyiv thought about, and interacted with, the Holocaust. From a broad look that actively seeks out varieties – both in non-Jewish perceptions of Jews, and in behavior related to them, it emerges that there were cases of non-German involvement in persecution and murder, and that many locals had antisemitic sentiments, with varying degrees of intensity. At the same time, however, no evidence is found that in the weeks under study, large numbers of Kyivans actively supported, in word or deed, the persecution and murder of Kyiv’s Jews, be it at Babyn Yar or elsewhere in the city. These findings support the notion that there was a major difference in the stances of non-Jewish residents towards Jews east and west of the former Molotov-Ribbentrop line.

Cleansing the Terrain in Bessarabia: In Towns, Transit Camps and Ghettos, Deportations

Author(s): Paul A. Shapiro / Language(s): English Issue: 14/2021

While there has been vigorous debate between “intentionalists” and “functionalists” regarding events elsewhere in Europe, there is no doubt regarding the intentionality of the Romanian State in favor of a complete ethnic cleansing of Jews from Bessarabia. One result of this consistency of intent was that the progressive stages of the “cleansing” process – from killing immediately on encounter, to the concentration of Jews in camps and ghettos, to deportation - all produced massive degradation and death. Every stage of the process is well documented, as one might expect in regard to a high priority project of a military dictatorship. Tens of thousands of Bessarabian Jews were murdered. Tens of thousands more were deported to Transnistria. Only a tiny remnant survived. No other Romanian province suffered anything proportionally comparable to the losses inflicted on the Jews of Bessarabia under Romanian rule during the Holocaust.

The Trials of the War Criminals from the Iași Pogrom: Investigations, Convictions, Acquittals, Releases

Author(s): Daniel-Valeriu Boboc / Language(s): English Issue: 14/2021

The trials of the war criminals involved in the Iași Pogrom were part of the general trend,at the end of World War II, to punish those who had killed civilians during the conflagration,in order to prevent further massacres in future wars. Romania was among the countries committed, through the convention with the United Nations, to punish the perpetrators. A legal framework in accordance with the Romanian legislation and with the principles established at the end of the war was adopted for this purpose. Adopting legislation and its implementation was a cumbersome process, meaning that repeated changes and adjustments were needed. The most important trial, that of the Iași Pogrom, took place almost four years after the beginning of the investigations. It was followed by other trials, soon after. The communist authorities tried to turn the trials into an ideological construct through mediacoverage, which was speculated by those who claimed the trials were politicized. In reality, those convicted for the crimes were proven guilty in court, and those in power were forced to accept the extension of investigations and convictions to others, based on the victims’ testimonies. The delay in the trials was a factor for the large number of people who escaped conviction, while the adoption of decree no. 421/1955 entailed the release of a large number of convicted persons, before the end of their sentence. The profile of convicted persons can be outlined from the victims’ statements. Not only employees of state institutions took part in the Pogrom, but neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. In the case of certain categories, thenumber of convictions was higher than in others. This was due to the fact that local perpetrators were easier to identify, while others had a special status, mainly the military.

Museums of martyrdom and the pedagogy of remembrance in the context of shaping students’ attitudes and future competences

Museums of martyrdom and the pedagogy of remembrance in the context of shaping students’ attitudes and future competences

Author(s): Marta Milewska / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2021

Museums of martyrdom operate on the sites of former Nazi concentration camps in Poland as memorials to the events of the Second World War. These institutions are part of the pedagogy of remembrance, which is an educational discipline connected with the theories of the German philosopher Theodor W. Adorno. The pedagogy of remembrance assumes that as part of the didactic process, it is important not only to learn about atrocities, but above all to analyse their causes. The discussion and debate surrounding the pedagogy of remembrance have allowed this article to identity the correlation between its assumptions and the shaping of students’ attitudes as well as the development of skills included in the key competences. These competences are also referred to in a broader sense as competences of the future, as they are necessary for an individual to function properly in society. The aim of this article is therefore to clarify whether and how museums of martyrdom and the pedagogy of remembrance can foster the development of the skills defined as competences of the future. This article also attempts to indicate the museum activities and didactic methods that can be used by educators at places of remembrance in order to shape attitudes and develop key competencies.
