Author(s): Alexandra Ilieva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 13/2023

The Podcast as a separate format has gradually become more and more popular in the Bulgarian National Radio network. This process was initiated back in 2019 when “BETAgames” became the first ever BNR podcast. The development of the podcasts in the BNR network went through different stages, each of which implemented different technical and consumer solutions. The article studies these different stages with a strong accent on the implemented solutions and the feedback from the audience. Споменът за освободителните борби на българите във фотографията след Освобождението

Author(s): Chavdar Vetov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2022

The liberation struggles during the Revival left a deep imprint on the collective consciousness of Bulgarian society. A process of searching for, preserving and popularizing evidence of the past of all kinds was being developed – including photographs, regarding the events and personalities related to the struggle for the liberation of the Bulgarians from the Ottoman rule. Celebrations were held, monuments were erected, historical events were re-enacted. Many of these events were photographed, thus the photographs became testimonies reflecting the desire to preserve the memory of the revolutionary struggle. The article examines photographs of buildings of historical significance, monuments, group and personal photographs of combatants, etc. They are found in various local and central archival collections. The descriptive method used shows how photographs participated in the process of preserving the historical memory of the movement for political independence and their role in the construction of national identity.

Darwin, Marker, Deleuze: The Expression of the Emotions and the Filmic Unconscious

Darwin, Marker, Deleuze: The Expression of the Emotions and the Filmic Unconscious

Author(s): Ruben Borg / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

My article traces a speculative history of the unconscious in a tradition of films and theories of cinema that engage with the face as a simulacrum of the psyche. Taking Gilles Deleuze’s discussion of the close-up in Cinema 1 as my starting point, I tease out the historical, conceptual and figural continuities between Charles Darwin’s work on the role of habit in emotional expression, Henri Bergson’s writing on perception and memory, and Deleuze’s own reflections on affectivity in film. I then turn to the films and essays of Chris Marker to suggest that within this cinematic model of the psyche, the unconscious corresponds to an irreducible passivity that conditions habit and perception and determines the expressivity of the face.

Fotografia wobec krzyku pamięci zagłady spod betonu masowego turyzmu

Fotografia wobec krzyku pamięci zagłady spod betonu masowego turyzmu

Author(s): Wojciech Sternak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2023

In the text, I discuss the problems of the genocide experience in the context of mass tourism. I point out that large-scale Holocaust memorials and genocide museums incorporated into the mass-tourism industry are drowning out cries of remembrance. I propose three categories of commemoration: “Captions”, “Monuments” and “Stand-alone Works”. The latter category includes fine art photography among others. Using the case of the photographic series Koenigsgraben, I point out that the category of “Stand-alone Works” seems to have the greatest potential (next to historical enviro mental activeness) to free the cry of remembrance from beneath the concrete of the monuments.

Към „медийната археология“ на грамофона в България

Към „медийната археология“ на грамофона в България

Author(s): Ventsislav Dimov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 15/2024

The study on the music recorded and reproduced on commercial media places in the framework of the research interest the early recordings of military bands in Bulgaria, recorded and published by the Gramophone Company in the first decades of the twentieth century. The emphasis is on the role of gramophones and gramophone records in Bulgaria as functioning objects (advertisements from periodicals from the first decade of the 20th century, literary works and memoirs are analyzed), symbols (labels are analyzed). Starting from the general picture, the study focuses on the place of the army and professional musicians in early Bulgarian gramophone records, shown as fields of cultural production and habitus. The ratios of genre arrays in early recordings are described and analyzed: "folk" music (folk, potpourri), military music (marches), popular music (Western dance idioms), art music, sound pictures. The relationship of contexts with contents has been sought, bringing out some encounters in military band recordings of Western and local, modern and traditional, political and popular.

The Folklore Sunrise Festival and Sunrise Music TV (Kiss M+) together create a vibrant "folk" scene that is socially and culturally significant, and attractive to communities connected to Bulgarian music-folk traditions.

Изкуствен интелект, фотография и права върху интелектуална собственост

Author(s): Liliya Yotova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2024

The entry of artificial intelligence (AI) into every area of economic and social life is already a reality. AI image generation and image processing methods have a huge importance and impact in the field of photography. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is a technological advancement and opens up new opportunities to expand the creative spectrum. It can be a powerful tool in the hands of professional photographers, but it can also lead to serious economic crises in the photographic creative industry. Today, it is difficult to tell whether an image is AI generated or created by the usual photographic method using light. This fact contributes to the increase of so-called “fake news” and creates a parallel virtual reality. The article examines the intersections between traditional photographic images and AI, but especially actual questions related to intellectual property in this field. By using the methodology of documentary analysis, current problems have been examined and possible solutions have been proposed.
