Życie codzienne Anny Jagiellonki w latach 1564–1572

Author(s): Patrycja Czarnecka / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The aim of this article is to reconstruct Anna Jagiellon’s everyday life in the light of her correspondence from the years 1564–1572. Due to her long life, the author focuses only on the short but stable period which began when she had moved to Warsaw in 1564 and ended when her brother, king Sigismund II Augustus, died. Daily life of the royal family member was strictly connected to the idea of a “royal court”. On the one hand, “the court” was defined as an organization consisting of officials, servants and others who were close to the princess but on the other hand, it was also the place where she lived. The article focuses on people who were mentioned in her letters, places where she spent most of her time and her everyday activities.

The corset, popular from the 16th to the 20th century, was repeatedly accused of deteriorating women’s health. One of the main concerns among the public and in literature of that time was tightlacing (reducing one’s waist by more than 10 cm), which was believed to cause cancer, consumptions, scoliosis and many other, sometimes deathly, diseases. In order to find if the historical allegations are true, this paper compares the works of 17th to 20th century doctors and publicists, with medical examination of 21st century doctors. The progress of modern medicine excludes most of quoted conditions and clarifies when corsets were safe and when, improperly used, they were dangerous.

The main objective of this paper is to examine different problems of prisoners of war in the Napoleonic era – the question which has not been profoundly elaborated in Polish historiography yet. Conditions and alimentation of prisoners, war crimes and enforced enlisting in the enemy’s armies are the most important issues discussed in the article. Primary sources analyzed by the author were confined to diaries of Polish veterans of the Napoleonic Wars. Soldiers described their personal experience of English, Spanish, Austrian and Russian imprisonment. Therefore, the aforementioned problems were referred in the broader geographical and social context of the first decade of the 19th century.

Why did domestic piano playing become a problem in the late 19th century? In this text I listen closely to complaints about the sounds of piano playing and analyse a multifaceted sonic phenomenon of a girl from a (aspiring) middle class family playing the instrument on a daily basis. I describe how the piano playing became an important part of middle class upbringing but also how it was being criticised, especially in the second part of the century. Most importantly, I focus on a girl and I ponder what role the piano could really play in her life. Following suggestions of Ruth A. Solie I claim that the piano was an important tool for emotional labour and emotion management, not only for the girl but also for the whole family.

Życie codzienne w księżycowej rzeczywistości. Na srebrnym globie Jerzego Żuławskiego jako astronomiczna metafora krytyki społecznej i naukowej przełomu XIX i XX wieku

Author(s): Wojciech Milej / Language(s): Polish Publication Year: 0

The main objective of this paper is to examine how Jerzy Żuławski in his novel "Na srebrnym globie" [On the Silver Globe] described Moon’s environment in the context of everyday life. At the end of the 19th century Żuławski’s novel was a prominent example of Polish intellectual atmosphere which can be depicted as permanent sadness, doubt and human inability to create stable predictable future. Also this article underscores the meaning of literary metaphor in a process of describing main problems of the Polish 19th century society. Żuławski used the Moon as a tool to show how different human issues can be filled into another environment but still remain as important and actual as it was on the Earth. Everyday life in this particular case was presented as dangerous and harmful reality that cannot be changed by human knowledge and preparedness for interstellar travels.

The article describes a problem of unemployment in the interwar period in the Dąbrowa Basin. It shows how this phenomenon was developing during the years from regaining independence in 1918 to its loss in 1939. In fact, the greatest intensity of this problem falls on the years 1930–1935, during the Great Depression. Unemployment was particularly strong in the Dąbrowa Basin, due to the large number of industrial plants. The article raises issues related to daily life of unemployed inhabitants of this area. It relates to matters such as poverty, social assistance but most of all, it refers to attempts at coping with this reality. The main aim of the article is to present the culinary side of the Polish People’s Republic. What was eaten and how? Did the shortage of meat trigger the necessity to become a vegetarian or vegan? What did the average citizen of the Polish People’s Republic spend his money on? The primary source in this case were cookbooks. Not only did they present recipes, but they were important guides for women aspiring to be rational and resourceful housewives. Totalitarian power wanted to control its citizens also in terms of cuisine. Despite the difficulties and problems, cleverness and appropriate strategies allowed people to create simple, quick and, from the present perspective, sophisticated dishes.

Diplomația franceză și problema unirii Basarabiei cu România

Diplomația franceză și problema unirii Basarabiei cu România

Author(s): Daniel Citirigă / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

Author(s): Paul Nistor / Language(s): Romanian Publication Year: 0

Obrazovanje učitelja u vrijeme Austro-Ugarske i današnji vid obrazovanja za učiteljsko zvanje

Author(s): Snježana Šušnjara / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Publication Year: 0

Education of teachers in the Austrian-Hungarian period was starting point of this research. Namely, during the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy education in Bosnia and Herzegovina was institutionalized for the first time in its history. Education became a moving force which effected life and society of that time. Teacher training schools were founded in this period of time and accumulated intellectuals who participated in social and cultural life of the country bringing important decisions in relation to education. School’s buildings that were constructed during the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy are at the same service even today. Therefore, the attempt of this work is to compare teacher education in the past and today. It is important to detect how many changes were made regarding quality and practical implementation of teaching subject matters. The question is has quality kept its level of importance or has it exposed to some other influences or formal attempts? The intention of this paper is to research those facts and present them with regard to their specificity.

„Rekonkvista Stare Srbije“: o kontinuitetu teritorijalne i demografske politike na Kosovu

„Rekonkvista Stare Srbije“: o kontinuitetu teritorijalne i demografske politike na Kosovu

Author(s): Vladan Z. Jovanović / Language(s): Serbian Publication Year: 0

Since the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Serbia used to be focused on the political status of its territorial gains (Kosovo, Macedonia, Sandzak), rather than on the social reality in these areas. The very reputation of the Serbian army, which occupied/liberated Kosovo in 1912, induced distrust of non-Slavic population towards the new state. Serbian military attempt to reach the Adriatic via northern parts of Albania (1912/13), as well as the treatment of Albanian civilians during these actions largely compromised the international reception of Serbian ‘liberation intentions’. That is one of the reasons why the Serb-Albanian conflict was difficult to be channelled during the first Yugoslav state. Instead of focusing on how to basically modernize the almost feudal society in its ‘Southern province’, the new government resorted to the territorial and demographic re-composition of the area, which was wedged between the myths of autochthonous people and the claims for ethnic and historical rights. It soon became clear that the ‘Albanian national question’ could not have been solved by inventing the ‘historical provinces’, nor by splitting Kosovo into three territorial units. Following the idea of ‘balancing’ the ethnic composition of Kosovo in favor of the Serbs, the Yugoslav kingdom acceded to the controversial project of agrarian reform and colonization, which resulted in settling 20,000 families in 1000 colonies throughout the ‘southern regions’. At the same time, Belgrade regime ‘offered’ an institutional framework for chaotic Muslim exodus (initialised after the Great Eastern Crisis), which elaborated practical ideas about emigration of ’disloyal’ Albanians. In order to colonize its eastern area, Turkey was ready to receive 200,000 Yugoslavs of ‘Turkish culture’, which was stipulated by the Yugoslav-Turkish Convention in 1938. The absurdity of territorial and demographic experiments came to the fore during the Second World War, when Kosovo fell under several various occupying regimes. An urgent request of German commander for Southeast to immediately stop the emigration of the Serbs ‘because it was bringing Kosovo to the brink of an anarchy’, ironically demystifies the very nature of demographic solutions resorted to since 1912, even after the creation of socialist Yugoslavia. After the establishment of military rule in Kosovo in early 1945, which very much resembled the early-1920s, the Communist authorities revised the interwar colonization, returning to the Albanian owners one-fifth of land, seized by the Yugoslav monarchist regime. However, dissatisfaction with the situation in Kosovo was still evident among its population, which triggered new migratory waves to Turkey. According to their volume, they far exceeded the pre-war Muslim emigration. The Yugoslav state was active in supporting the process of expatriation of Albanians as in previous times. The spiral of alternate demographic shifts and continuous administrative-territorial redefinition of space did not have positive effects on social cohesion in Kosovo.

Novine u državnoj i nacionalnoj službi

Novine u državnoj i nacionalnoj službi

Author(s): Agron Bajrami / Language(s): Serbian Publication Year: 0

In this article I analyze the reporting of two daily newspapers, one Serbian (Politika) and the other one Albanian (Rilindja), in the context of a historical dispute between the Serbs and Albanians. The article focuses on the ways that these nations were represented in these newspapers in the early twentieth century, at the time of the Balkan wars, Albanian independence and the First World War, and towards the end of that century, during the late 1980s and early 1990s and the dissolution of the socialist Yugoslavia. The study is limited to the analysis of the reporting in the Belgrade-based newspaper Politika at the time of the declaration of independence of Albania (1912), prior to the establishment of newspaper in Kosovo in Albanian language, as well as on the reporting of Politika and Prishtina-based Rilindja in September 1987, during a crisis caused by the death of five soldiers at the Yugoslav Army fort in the town of Paraćin in Central Serbia. Taking into consideration an abundance of historical arguments about a peaceful of Serbs and Albanians in the Balkans, I infer that one-sided journalism full of prejudices, stereotypes and even racism (Rilindja) was one of the crucial factors in creating negative attitudes towards „the Other“. I also conclude that such reporting apparently aided in creating a rift between the two nations, and therefore claim that promoting a different kind of journalism, led by professional standards and best practices instead of stereotypes, prejudices or political benefits, would have great role in bridging this rift.
