PRZESTRZEŃ PUBLICZNA A PRZEMIANY MIASTA

NUCLEAR ENERGY AND THE CURRENT SECURITY ENVIRONMENT IN THE ERA OF HYBRID THREATS

Author(s): Author Not Specified / Language(s): English

Security concerns are an integral part of the discussions on energy dependencies. The security discussion became even more common in the European energy debates with the various gas disputes between Russia and Ukraine in 2006–2015. After these incidents, the energy diversification policy has received increasing attention in Europe. Russia has featured prominently in the European debate relating to energy dependencies and interdependencies, but there are also other actors who may have an interest in affecting the stability of the energy supply. This has been the case with hydrocarbon production and exports in particular (Oxenstierna, 2014). Recent attacks on oil tankers and an oil processing facility in Saudi Arabia have made headlines and resulted in rapid fluctuations in the price of oil. Nuclear energy has attracted much less attention as a potential security risk compared to the perception of risks related to hydrocarbon dependency, and it is therefore worth taking a closer look at the sector. Different energy sources, industries and actors must be studied more carefully in the changed security environment. These changes include the growing dependencies across energy infrastructure systems, increasing interconnectedness in the world, the increased potential to use energy as a geo-political tool and the intensifying competition among great powers and regional hegemons (Verner, et al., 2019). The objective of this study is to analyse whether nuclear energy can be used in some way by an adversary as a part of their hybrid activity toolbox.

Zlepšování a environmentální inovace v podniku

Author(s): Viktor Kulhavý / Language(s): Czech

The publication presents theoretical foundations of continuous improvement and environmental innovation in a company. The interdisciplinary issue is being scrutinized from the perspective of management, organizational psychology and conservation psychology. The neccessary research framework is provided by the theory of planned behaviour. The aim of the conducted research was to find out in what ways employees of a particular business take part in the innovation activities and eco-innovations development. Alongside the theoretical model derived from the theory of planned behaviour has been subject to verification. In this way the appropriateness of employee behavioural intention to make amotion to innovation was examined. It can be summarized that the environmental innovation proposals are not perceived by the employees of the company as a common practice in the process of innovation development. The innovation activities have from a point of view of the foremen and the moderators the aim of productivity increase and making work easier. For the labourers it means above all financial gain as a reward for the innovation proposals. The moderators –according to their opinion – incite the labourers to suggest eco-innovations, however the labourers alone do not perceive their improvement proposals to be environmentally sound.

Normalized management systems: quality, environment and safety

Author(s): / Language(s): English

The content of all chapters of the present book contributes to the discussion about the shape of the aforementioned strategy in reference to normalized management systems. It should be noted that the authors of the present publication are aware of the correspondence between the standardization of products, processes and management systems. The authors focused on standards associated with management systems, because practice has shown that these standards can be very useful in the process of improving management systems in organizations and, consequently, contribute to its increased competitiveness. The authors, while discussing issues related to this area, have made an attempt to view an organization as a system, i.e. a set of interrelated elements which function as a whole. Special emphasis has been put on the normalized management systems which enjoy great popularity among organizations, especially in reference to the process of improving their operations. Therefore, separate chapters of the present book comprise considerations about various aspects of standards linked with good management practices in relation to: quality, environment, information security, food safety, occupational health and safety as well as social responsibility. Moreover, significant premises, methods and levels of the integration of these systems have been touched upon. Considerations included in the present book, according to its authors, are valuable in their cognitive and application aspects alike. The use of analyses, evaluations and recommendations included in this book can be a very useful tool for improving the implementation process and increasing the effectiveness of the discussed management systems in any production or service organization. The present handbook may also serve as a source of inspiration for conducting independent research for doctoral candidates in the frames of interdisciplinary doctoral studies within the scope of product and service quality. Furthermore, it can be used in order to support the didactic process of these studies /Jerzy Łańcucki/.

Jak se zamilovat do přírody

Jak se zamilovat do přírody

Author(s): Šárka Křepelková / Language(s): Czech Publication Year: 0

Understanding the Relationship Between Natural Habitat Loss and Urban Development in Irbid Governorate

Understanding the Relationship Between Natural Habitat Loss and Urban Development in Irbid Governorate

Author(s): Anne A. Gharaibeh,Tareq N. Aldela’a / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The global population has grown rapidly, causing urbanization and rural habitat loss. Current research investigates the causes for habitat loss and fragmentation in the Bani-Kinanah County, Irbid, Jordan. It defines loss and fragmentation as natural or anthropogenic separation of green land. It also examines decision-makers' challenges and proposes greenways to reduce habitat loss and fragmentation. The study utilized snowball sampling to interview decision-makers and ArcGIS software to digitize aerial photographs. A literature review and criteria analysis determined greenway and green corridor locations. The study compared digitized aerial photos from 2005 and 2021 for several villages to assess built-up areas, street construction, and ecological natural corridors. Agricultural footprints were also examined. Interviewing the decision-makers revealed that habitat loss and fragmentation are attributed to physical and non-physical factors. they suggested modifications to natural habitat regulations and laws, public awareness of their importance and the causes of fragmentation, and physical interventions to minimize negative effects to prevent habitat fragmentation and loss. This study provides a foundation for understanding habitat fragmentation and loss and proposing solutions. The study recommends community involvement and collaboration with nature/environmental associations to monitor and prevent changes. It also proposes greenways and green corridors to sustain natural habitats.

Climate Flexibility: Introducing Nature in National Accounting

Climate Flexibility: Introducing Nature in National Accounting

Author(s): Julia M. Puaschunder / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

The European and North American Green New Deals have become springfeathers of change in the national and international accounting of natural resources. The European Sustainable Finance Taxonomy accounts for the carbon impact of industries in order to quantify economic impacts on natural resources to make industry impacts on environmental conditions more transparent and accountable. The United States Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris administration has also launched efforts to put nature on the nation’s balance sheet. The Biden-Harris White House multi-year strategy plans to connect environmental conditions with economic outcomes by collecting data and using innovative methods to capture nature’s role in the U.S. economy. On the global level, integrating natural resources into economic productivity prospects has the potential to change power dynamics and international politics driven by economic opportunities. Linking nature to the economy and productivity as well as the human standard of living is the driver for the World Bank project on “Changing Wealth of Nations.” Integrating natural capital in global macroeconomic and financial models is thereby meant to feature systematically forward-looking wealth estimates as a source to inspire restoration and conservation policies. The ‘Mapping Climate Justice’ project housed at Columbia University measures the impact of climate change on economic productivity around the world and has found vast climate injustices. Future wealth of nations was introduced by the concept of climate flexibility defined as the range of temperature variation of a country. Climate flexibility is the leeway countries have in coping with a changing climate due to a broad range of climate zones prevalent in their territory. Climate flexibility can be grounded on the relative latitude and altitude of countries around the globe. Climate flexibility directly influences a country’s productivity in agriculture production opportunities, trade possibilities, industry development favorable conditions as well as service sector offerings. Climate wealth of nations so far has also been proposed to stem from climate zones, which vary around the world. Climate justice redistribution strategies have been proposed in order to alleviate climate injustices, by which countries that benefit from a relative climate advantage are meant to redistribute some of the expected economic gains to countries that lose out the most and the fastest from global warming. The redistribution could be implemented via a taxation-bonds redistribution strategy. Overall, the concerted efforts to marry the idea of natural resource description are believed to stimulate environmental policy and protection, change sustainable development and macroeconomic calculus. Policy and regulatory settings are meant to be aligned with wealth derived from natural resources. Natural resource accounting is also likely to change the estimation of competitiveness around the world. The integration of local community assets can thereby facilitate conservation holistically. Scientifically, environmental and economics interactions are likely to inspire ground-breaking insights for monetizing the value of natural assets and stimulate the future discourse on resilient finance.

The Constitutional Reflection of the Right to a Healthy and Ecologically Balanced Environment

The Constitutional Reflection of the Right to a Healthy and Ecologically Balanced Environment

Author(s): Elena Emilia Ștefan / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Nowadays, people have become increasingly concerned about topics such as: the environment, climate, ecology, climate change. Human coexistence on our beautiful blue planet currently involves, more than ever, the development of a legal conscience. In this background, this study proposes a generous objective, namely to know the general legal framework regarding the regulation in Romanian legislation of the right to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment. From this perspective, we believe that the theme is highly topical and important for several categories of subjects: private individuals, public authorities, but also for states, to a large extent. The proposed architecture of the paperwork consists of several parts, organized in a logical sequence. Part I provides a brief introduction to the general subject of the topic. Part II analyzes the legislative framework in order to know how the constituent legislator regulated the right to a healthy environment. Part III focuses on discussing the contribution of case-law in shaping the state's obligation to provide the legal framework for the exercise of the right to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment.

Preserving and Balancing Ecosystems: Strategies to Mitigate Human-Elephant Conflict Through Law

Preserving and Balancing Ecosystems: Strategies to Mitigate Human-Elephant Conflict Through Law

Author(s): Tulishree Pradhan,Chinmayee Nanda,Diya Sarkar / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This paper focuses on addressing the issue of human-elephant conflict in India by implementing mitigation strategies, with a specific emphasis on Indian legislation. Human-elephant conflict is a significant problem in India as the shrinking habitats of elephants and the expansion of human settlements lead to encounters that pose risks to both humans and elephants. The paper provides an overview of the factors contributing to human-elephant conflict in India, such as habitat loss, encroachment, and resource competition. It then explores the legal framework related to wildlife conservation and protection in India, particularly highlighting the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and relevant policies and guidelines. Various mitigation strategies are discussed to reduce human-elephant conflict, including habitat management and restoration, community participation and awareness, elephants' welfare and relocation, crop protection and compensation, and the use of early warning systems and technology. The study emphasizes the significance of Indian legislation, particularly the Wildlife Protection Act, in guiding and supporting these mitigation strategies. It acknowledges the challenges and limitations associated with their implementation and provides recommendations to enhance conflict mitigation efforts. By examining the intersection of human-elephant conflict and Indian legislation, this study contributes to a better understanding of the legal and policy framework for managing such conflicts. It provides valuable insights for policymakers, wildlife authorities, and conservation practitioners in developing effective strategies to mitigate human-elephant conflict in India.

The Nexus Between Economic Development, Democracy, and Environmental Degradation: Testing the EKC Hypothesis in the BRICS + 6 Countries

The Nexus Between Economic Development, Democracy, and Environmental Degradation: Testing the EKC Hypothesis in the BRICS + 6 Countries

Author(s): Gülcan Doğanay / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This study investigates the relationship between economic development, democracy, and carbon emissions in the BRICS + 6 countries, considering the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) Hypothesis. By using the data from 1991 to 2020, it aims to fill the research gap on whether economic development and democratic governance consistently lead to better environ-mental quality, focusing on carbon emissions as a primary measure. This research is distinctive because it considers the cross-sectional dependency and heterogeneity of the countries involved, employing robust regression models to examine the effects of various factors, including GDP, democracy index, and population, on carbon emissions. The study revisits the EKC hypothesis, which suggests an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation, proposing that environmental quality deteriorates up to a certain income level before improving. However, it also explores critiques of the EKC, recognizing that the trajectory of environmental degradation is influenced by more than just income levels—factors such as technological advancement, economic structure, governmental environmental policies, and the level of democracy also play crucial roles. Expected to provide valuable insights for policy formulation, this research highlights the complex interactions between economic development, democratic governance, and environmental sustainability. It underscores the necessity of integrating democratic processes with economic and environmental planning to foster sustainable development, offering a nuanced perspective on the dynamics between democracy, income, and environmental quality in the BRICS + 6 countries.
