19. Yüzyılın Son Çeyreğinde Malatya'da Yaşanan Afetler, Sosyal, Ekonomik Krizler ve Yardım Faaliyetleri

Author(s): Abdurrahim Fahimi AYDIN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 31/2022

Disasters such as earthquakes, fires, famine, locust invasions and cholera caused unfortunate disasters in Malatya in the last quarter of the 19th century. In addition to all these, the immigrant and Armenian question has deepened the issues. Each devastating event triggered another disaster. Although the issues were tried to be resolved with local measures at the beginning, these measures were not sufficient. Problems were tried to be solved with the joint aid of the state and the people. The Ottoman Empire has acquired a number of principles while settling the refugees. The main purpose of these principles is to provide food for immigrants. An order has been established in which they can provide their salaries and shelter within the framework of humanitarian aid. The black market became widespread with the increase in demand for foodstuffs during the war years, the decrease in production and the cessation of imports as a result of the closure of transportation routes. The state has made intensive efforts to provide the necessary nutrients and basic consumer goods for the feeding of the poor people, the Army and civil servants, and to prevent price increases. In order to combat speculation, basic consumption items have been pledged.Cords and lazaretto were opened to combat the cholera epidemic, and the rest of the food was met. Due to the magnitude of the damage and financial loss in the earthquake, it was decided to collect aid for the victims of Malatya in all Ottoman provinces in order to heal the wounds of the disaster victims. While the people of Malatya were going through difficult times, they showed a good example of the fusion of the state and the nation, and carried out contractual activities with the state in needed areas.

Perspektywa poznawcza w badaniach ruchów społecznych: przypadek ruchów na rzecz sprawiedliwości klimatycznej

Author(s): Przemysław Pluciński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2022

Mitigating and adapting to climate change are two critical civilizational challenges nowadays, and many social actors are facing them. The paper’s objective is to analyse the phenomenon of Polish climate justice social movements through the use of the ‘cognitive approach’, introduced and developed by Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison. The article addresses two main issues. First, it attempts to reconstruct a conceptual-methodological framework for research on environmental activism. Second, it presents a preliminary presentation of the cognitive universes and practices of Polish climate justice movements based on the findings from desk research and an empirical investigation based on 30 in-depth interviews conducted in three Polish cities (Poznań, Wrocław, Warszawa). The article also addresses research gaps while pointing out the need for greater involvement of the social sciences in climate change mitigation measures, including opening up academia to bottom-up perspectives.

The Activism of Dance Performance in Appalachia: Utilizing the Arts to Address Social and Environmental Crisis and Injustice in the Mountains

Author(s): Theresa L. Burriss / Language(s): English Issue: 39/2022

For well over a century, the human and more-than-human of Central Appalachia have endured oppression and exploitation, primarily due to natural resource extraction. In spring 2008, the author led a dark tour to a mountaintop removal coalmining site in Southern West Virginia for colleagues, which included Dance Professor Deborah McLaughlin. As a result, the two collaborated on three evening-length dance/theater works highlighting social and environmental crises and injustices in the region. The performances incorporated contemporary dance, poetry, the spoken word, and the visual arts, as well as contemporary and traditional music. The first, Eating Appalachia: Selling Out to the Hungry Ghost, focused on mountaintop removal coalmining and its environmental and cultural destruction. With Sounds of Stories Dancing, the duo paid homage to millions of mountain residents forced to leave the region to find stable employment, despite longing to remain. In the final piece, The Shadow Waltz, they honored the lives of coalminers with black lung disease, as well as their families. This essay discusses the challenges of creating art that critiques socially constructed messages portrayed as given truths, as well as the educational and social successes of daring to dance truth to power.

ASSESSMENT OF FACTORS INFLUENCING PRO-CIRCULAR BEHAVIOR OF A POPULATION

ASSESSMENT OF FACTORS INFLUENCING PRO-CIRCULAR BEHAVIOR OF A POPULATION

Author(s): Aknur Zhidebekkyzy,Aigul Moldabekova,Aisulu Moldabekova,Birganym Amangeldiyeva,Justas Štreimikis / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

Circular economy is one of the best alternatives to the existing linear economy. Nowadays, environmental problems are widely discussed not only by scientists but also by politicians and business representatives. However, a number of barriers hinder the transition to a circular economy. Therefore, this paper aimed to determine the factors influencing the pro-environmental behavior of population, which directly affects the implementation of circularity principles. A quantitative approach based on the paradigm of positivism/realism was applied in this study. In the empirical part, the survey included an online questionnaire filled out in 16 regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which made for a total of 3448 respondents. The collected data were processed using the SPSS 25 software, and the hypotheses were tested using the Smart PLS 3 program. The results show that circular mindset, circular awareness, and external incentives significantly affect the pro-circular behavior of individuals and encourage shared consumption. This article contributes to the development of the theoretical basis of circular economy concepts and puts forward practical recommendations.

ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF AIR POLLUTION ON POPULATION MORTALITY IN EU COUNTRIES

ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF AIR POLLUTION ON POPULATION MORTALITY IN EU COUNTRIES

Author(s): Romualdas Ginevičius / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Particulate matter (PM 2.5), ozone, lead and radon are among the main sources of air pollution. The differences in mortality rates across the European Union due to their impact are very high, ranging from 4 to 16 times. Mortality from PM 2.5 particles is excreted 12.3 – fold compared to ozone, 4.6 – fold for lead and 10.6 – fold for radon. The state of economic development of countries and health expenditures have a significant impact on the rate of human mortality caused by air pollution. Their impact is uneven. Most of these depend on mortality from PM 2.5 particles, to a large extent from lead and ozone, and to a smaller extent to radon. All the countries of the European Union concerned pay considerable attention to health protection, since the level of the costs involved is closely linked to the per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP). On the other hand, the real situation is illustrated by the trend in population mortality from the sources of air pollution in question. Absolute positive changes in population mortality from particulate matter (PM 2.5) have been observed over the period 2009‒2018 (the situation has improved in all countries); significant positive changes in mortality due to lead air pollution (the situation has improved in 13 countries); moderate and negative changes due to ozone contamination (the situation improved in 11 countries) and very strong negative changes in mortality due to air pollution by ozone (the situation improved in only 8 countries).

Ekoglottodydaktyka? Analiza treści podręczników do nauki języka angielskiego jako obcego w świetle założeń krytyki ekologicznej

Author(s): Alina Mitek-Dziemba / Language(s): Polish Issue: 31/2022

The article is aimed at providing the theoretical background for the foreign language (ESL) environmental education, which is sought in the early manifestations of the environmental movement, as well as presenting the main assumptions of ecological criticism as a benchmark for the educational practice whose major objective is to instil environmental awareness in students at the time of the climate crisis. The second part of the paper includes an analysis of environmental contents in Polish schoolbooks used in the ESL classroom at intermediate and advanced levels. The authors’ decisions regarding the presentation of ecological topics and climate change issues are then investigated in terms of its compliance with ecocritical claims and its support of activist and emancipatory attitudes. The analysis seeks to indicate the best methods and ways of pursuing critical environmental pedagogy which would be able to rise to the challenges of the Anthropocene.

Tematyka ekologiczna w słowackim Państwowym Programie Nauczania dla szkół podstawowych (drugi etap edukacyjny)

Tematyka ekologiczna w słowackim Państwowym Programie Nauczania dla szkół podstawowych (drugi etap edukacyjny)

Author(s): Anita Račáková / Language(s): Polish Issue: 31/2022

In her article, Anita Račáková analyses how the Slovak State Educational Program for the 2nd level of primary schools incorporates topics related to climate, or, more precisely, to issues of the environment and its protection. Račáková enquires whether these topical issues have been addressed in the Program, in which educational areas and subjects they are handled, and in what form and to what extent. Her analysis shows that ecological and climatic topics have a dual status in programs for the 2nd level of primary schools. They are part of compulsory extracurricular education in the areas of Man and Nature, Man and Society, and the optional cross-sectional subject Ecological Education. These topics are also incorporated into the educational areas of Man and Values, Language and Communication, where they are used as a tool for developing the personality of students.

Responsabilitatea socială corporativă a organizațiilor din România, de la aspirație la stare de fapt

Author(s): Constantin Ștefan Ponea,Elena Bică / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2023

We are noticing that, in a context where globalisation is an increasingly challenge for all organisations, regardless of their field of activity or form of organisation, the concept of corporate social responsibility is gaining in significant importance, becoming a differentiating „criterion” for all stakeholders involved: management, staff, employees, investors, customers, trade unions or NGOs. However, in the Romanian organisational environment, the implementation and development of the concept, particularly in the public sector, is still in the incipient stage, the communication and social involvement of organisations managing to take the first important steps, especially in the last decade. As such, awareness regarding the value of this type of organisations social involvement - socially responsible behaviour, sustainability, sustainable development - will be a step forward for society in general and can change, through a certain type of behaviour, our way of life even up to the macroeconomic level

The War in Ukraine from 2022 and Its Impact on the Environment

The War in Ukraine from 2022 and Its Impact on the Environment

Author(s): Mihail Haralampiev,Monika Panayotova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The present article aims to focus the attention on the Russian-Ukrainian war from February 24, 2022 and its impact on the environment. The analysis reveals the importance of climate issues in Ukraine for the past, present and future of the country by considering: a/the war as wake-up call for climate emergency; and b/ the desire of Kiev for accession to the EU as an opportunity for green transition and sustainable recovery. It is claimed that the war in Ukraine from 2022 is an example of how military actions have a significant ecological footprint and how the post-war recovery could be a chance for low-carbon development of the economy and society of the second largest country in Europe, the seventh in terms of population and the eighth of military forces of the old continent. On the one hand, it emphasizes on the multidimensional role of the armed forces and defence sector that should be considered within the wider climate-security nexus. On the other hand, it shows that the pursuit of EU membership has a green transformative effect, considering the strategic targets of the Union to move towards Net Zero by 2050.The analysis leads to the following conclusions: 1) The military conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows the widespread use of various types of weapons, which generates large amounts of carbon dioxide, by strongly affecting the climate of the entire continent; 2) The post-war recovery is a chance for Ukraine for better sustainable development of its economy, society and security; 3) The path of Ukraine to the EU would be a stimulus for the armed forces and defence sector, as causing and suffering the consequences of climate change, to increase the resilience of their capabilities and infrastructure, by investing in green and innovative technologies and at the same time by decreasing their environmental footprint without reducing their operational effectiveness.

Ruscism – A threat to international legal order and the security of all humanity

Author(s): Nasty Marian Vlădoiu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 01/2023

Ruscism, and more precisely, its valuable content element, spirituality, should not be used to address Russia's geopolitical problems or to satisfy Putin's and/or other politicalmilitary leaders' hegemonic ambitions. Furthermore, Russian propaganda acknowledges that there is no geopolitical, economic, or military solution to achieve a balance of power at the international level. The elevation of humanity's spirituality cannot be accomplished through armed means, terror, or immeasurable and irreversibly lost material destruction, which could endanger the very existence of the human species.

„Дърветата дързостно клатят глави“. Екокритични идеи в избрани ганайски стихове

Author(s): Philomena Ama Okyeso Yeboah,Philip Kwame Freitas,Paul Otoo,James Gyimah Manu / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Recently, environmental issues have taken central stage both in the literary and non-literary world due to human continuous neglect, exploitation and abuse of the environment. The present study examines how literature serves as a tool of caution and awareness to reveal human unfair treatment of the environment. Through eco-criticism and textual analysis, four Ghanaian poems – “Breaching the Silence Code,” “Modernity and its Reapings,” “Lone Maize” and “Amakom Flowers” – are examined to highlight the eco-critical issues raised in Ghanaian society and Africa at large. It becomes evident that the ecosystem is constantly under threat and if humans do not find ways to curb these threats, there is a high probability that the environment will be destroyed. The study concludes that ecocriticism as a theory not only offers a refreshing perspective into reading the poems but helps bring forth pertinent environmental issues that are detrimental to the safety and sanctity of the environment.

Author(s): Pınar SELİMOĞLU,Hicran Hanım HALAÇ / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 17/2023

: Many factors such as uncontrolled construction and progress in the city, abandonment of historical buildings, , natural disasters that occur with the increasing population threaten the natural and cultural heritage in cities. In order to ensure the continuity of the cultural heritage that has preserved its existence until today, the effect of learning by seeing the structures is very important in the education in the vocational schools in order to teach the right protection measures and to place the awareness of cultural heritage. Considering this importance, it is aimed to create a route suggestion for orientation in order to create a pre-memory for the cultural heritage for the students of the Architectural Restoration Program of Boyabat Vocational School and the students studying in different departments in the district. It is aimed to prepare a guide that presents 2 mosques and fountains, 1 fountain, 1 school buildings and 21 civil architecture examples together on the route, which was prepared by choosing a region where registered civil architecture buildings are concentrated in the urban protected area in the district. Some of the buildings encountered along the route, building material, typology, street texture, etc. Information about the characteristics of the buildings was given and it was aimed that the students would look at the buildings more consciously during the trips they will make throughout the city. As a result, this route study, which was prepared for the purpose of orientation to the students, will serve as a guide for the cultural routes to be prepared for the Boyabat district in the future.

THE IMPACT OF EU’S ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION IN ITS PERIPHERY

Author(s): Mihai Dănilă / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The European Union’s desiderate of fully decarbonization until 2050 led to the adaptation of a comprehensive regulation that set ambitious environmental targets. EU’s vision regarding the energy transition is very well expressed through its programs and policies. Currently, European Green Deal and NextGenerationEU mechanism are ambitious strategies that can make the EU’s desires for a sustainable future reality. The first strategy intends to transform the European Union into a modern, green, and competitive economy and to decouple from fossil fuels. The second case refers to the recovery plan that follows to restore the EU’s economy affected by the Covid pandemic. This plan, recently adopted, among his directions, had proposed reforms that make possible the green transition. How do these efforts affect the EU’s neighbourhood in their climate action? Is there substantial evidence that shows the European Union’s influence in shaping the environmental regulation of EU’s neighbours? This article aims to answer these questions using a comparative analysis that includes two EU neighbours, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova. This analysis follows to measure the influence of the EU’s environmental efforts among its neighbours and explore those factors that favor this process. The results of the comparative analysis will be interpreted using the theoretical framework from the Europeanization literature.

Therapeutic Alliances in Family Mediation. Is There a Link Between Trust-Building Between Mediators and Disputing Parties and the Establishment of a Therapeutic Alliance?

Author(s): Vera Méndez Monleón,Joan Albert Riera Adrover,José Francisco Campos Vidal / Language(s): English Issue: 81/2023

A connection has been found in various studies between trust-building and the success of mediation processes. Within the field of social work, trust is seen as an emotional link which, in turn, is one of the components of a therapeutic alliance. This paper therefore presents a research study, based on a quantitative methodology, aimed at clarifying whether there really is a link between a relationship of trust and the establishment of a therapeutic alliance between mediators and disputing parties. The results of the study determine what impact the construct of a therapeutic alliance has in predicting general trust-building between mediators and the parties involved in family mediation.

DYPTYK O „EKOLOGICZNYM” DOMOSTWIE BYCIA — DAWNIEJ I DZIŚ

Author(s): Wanda Bajor / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2023

One of the manifestations of the contemporary cultural and civilizational crisis is the ecological crisis caused by the overexploitation and devastation of the natural living environment. The root cause of this phenomenon is seen in false thinking and a narrowed cognitive perspective directed exclusively towards utilitarian processing of the world and the reduction of man as a means in the pursuit of economic gain. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, existentialists such as Martin Heidegger and Gabriel Marcel, as well as contemporary Joseph Ratzinger, warned of these dangers, postulating a return to such ideas as integral knowledge of man, God and the world directed towards wisdom, contemplation, fraternity, humility and asceticism in the sense of modesty of intention. These are not some new ideas invented for the moment; they are all to be found in the ancient heritage of European culture, especially in the forgotten, despised Middle Ages, whose wisdom and rich deposits of meaning still remain undiscovered. The works of the medieval masters containing unsurpassed syntheses of knowledge about the whole of reality, the beauty of the natural world, human dignity, the meaning of life and its ultimate goals can inspire, teach and nourish today's lost, spiritually starved man.
