Ethnocentrism - the danger of cultures’ collision

In the context of the globalization, the contact between different cultures and religions has reopened a number of problems. Thus, one of the current challenges is the ethnocentrism. This anthropological and ethnological concept involves an overestimation of national, religious, racial, geographic group to which we belong, and an understatement of other groups, that because of prejudice about other people. The ethnocentrism may lead us to chauvinism, xenophobia and racism! The globalization facilitates the rapid encounter between different cultures and, thus, it is developing the tendency that one to consider being superior to another. Thus are being born the ethnocentric tendencies. We can say that ethnocentrism is a 'prodrug' of globalization, providing support and arguments for perpetuating this process.

The fortuity can be defined both as an unpredictable case and a fate or destiny. This article will show that ambivalence of meaning on the example of phenomenon of death. The article contains three parts. The first one tells about the meaning of the fortuity of death in some archaic cultures. The next one refers to the case of the fortuity of death in medicine and its consequences. However, the last part brings up the way of presenting the fortuity of death in mass media and its influence on recipients.

Антропология восхождения: дискурс цивилизаций

Applying the theory of reflexive-discursive systems, culture-play systems, social psychology etc., the author has tried to show that it is not so simple to get rid of one’s own cultural centrism and climb to a higher level of reflexive-discursive position. Yet, it is absolutely necessary, if one wants to understand one’s own and a different culture adequately. The author proves that modern anthropology and culturology must drop the Eurocentrist approach and master a new multifold methodology. It is necessary to understand that the so-called Utilitarian Discourse is not the only correct and the only possible way to reflect and express reality, and that it is not the only means building the universe. The paper contains a number of examples from Chinese and Jewish cultures proving significance of the anthropological approach based on the so-called «reflexive-discursive climbing».The author also analyses a connection between almost synchronous cultures: painted pottery Cucuteni-Tripolye culture, on the one hand, and the Chinese Neolithic cultures Yangshao and Majiayao, on the other hand. He shows their typological and ideological proximity and studies their spatial and temporal interaction through the Eurasian forest-steppe area and the so called Gansu corridor. He considers connections of the fundamental Snake-Dragon myth in Western and Chinese cultural traditions, suggesting a hypothesis of western influence.

Społeczne wymiary czytelniczych preferencji literackich

The article is devoted to the socio-cultural determinants of the literary choices of Polish teenagers. Spontaneous book choices are shown in the context of reading methods, which build expectations for satisfying reading, forms of reading activity and the nature of participation in the social circulation of the book. Attention was focused on the specificity of literary tastes and ways of reading, dependent on socialization for reading in the town from which teenage readers come. Three ways of reading have been described: rural way, small-town way and big-city way. The article was based on the analysis of the results of three editions of nationwide surveys (from 2003, 2010, 2013) following the reading attitudes of fifteen-year-old students completing the compulsory education stage.

Scientific Discourses of Differentiation by Race, Gender, and Disability from the 19th Century Until Present Day

The conflicting understandings about different levels of pain in white and black bodies potentially lead to discriminatory practices in medical institutions, which have repercussions for individuals’ health and racially frames social relations. In addition to race, stereotypes about the experience of pain and emotion exist in relation to gender and disability,which I will argue throughout this article. These scientific and popular discourses underlined discriminatory practices while influencing how people thought about race, gender, and disability.

In the interactions of philosophy, literature and cinema, image of evil has come from the subjects that have been aesthetized in the eternal bones. One of the most important typologies of the popular culture, the evil characters / prototypes / anti-heroes are remarkable with their modern interpretations. From the Renaissance to the Dark Romanticism to the Symbolism to the Surrealism, The Devil and witch figures have been moved as human beings to the cinema’s places over time as the canvas of master painters like Bosch, Goya. Similarly Milton; within the terrestrial hells created by authors such as Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Sartre, the painful characters made possible the formation of fictional characters in the art of cinema. Metaphysical evil is abandoned under the influence of gothic literature and black literature, and bad characters are placed in the center of movies in the light of the philosophy. Historical and aesthetic journeys of ideas on the problem of evil of thinkers like Platonis, Augistinus, Hegel, Kant and Nietzsche will become one of the most popular topics of our time. XIX.th In the century and after, moral evil comes into being in the body of modern man. XX.th in century After the 19th century, sociopaths, serial killers, film adaptations were made, XXI. n the century, video games “villain” from television series became the most popular investments by studios. The history, sociological and psychological facts underlying the leading “bad” characters in this article are examined.

Przystanek Woodstock XXI wieku, czyli teatralizacja społeczeństwa i zmierzch subkultur

Przystanek Woodstock is one of the most important cultural events in Europe.The evidence for that are massive attendance and concerts of valued Polish and foreign artists who represent various music styles. The article is an attempt to define the identity of the 21st century festival community. To achieve this the author compares Przystanek Woodstock to the original Woodstock Festival and the Jarocin festivals the symbols of which are the actual slogans, subcultures and ideologies. In the case of the Przystanek Woodstock the ideological element has been replaced by the carnivalesque element and the event reminds of the Muggleton’s supermarket of styles and a fancy dress costume party. As a consequence, the community of the Przystanek Woodstock is internally dispersed what makes it difficult to find the right terminology covering such a multi-level phenomenon. In the final part of the article the author concludes that the 21st century Przystanek Woodstock may find its identity if there is, in the nearest future, integration resulting from defining an object of rebellion.

Teza. Rozwój cywilizacji sprawił, że życie współczesnego człowieka uległoznacznemu przyspieszeniu – stale gdzieś pędzimy i nieustannie brakuje nam czasu. Tenwszechobecny prymat natychmiastowości w ogromnym stopniu wpływa na styl byciajednostek oraz ich zachowania społeczne, również te zdrowotne.Omówione koncepcje. Artykuł otwierają ustalenia terminologiczne – wyjaśnionopojęcie stylu życia i zachowań zdrowotnych, jednocześnie omawiając ich związki z kulturą.Dalsza część, to krótka refleksja nad obecnym tempem życia. Część zasadniczą stanowianaliza zachowań zdrowotnych społeczeństwa w kontekście dominującej dziś „kulturyinstant”. W zakończeniu zwrócono uwagę na ogromną potrzebę edukacji zdrowotnej orazwskazano obszary działań, które w obliczu wszechobecnej natychmiastowości powinny staćsię priorytetowe.Wyniki i wnioski. Podjęte w artykule rozważania, pokazują jak bardzo „zdrowie”uwikłane jest w kulturę i jej przemiany. Pośpiech jaki cechuje współczesną kulturę powoduje,że nasze zachowania coraz częściej przybierają charakter antyzdrowotny. Wydaje się też, żew tym nieustającym biegu przegapiliśmy moment, w którym przestaliśmy dostrzegaćzagrożenia wynikające z naszej codziennej działalności. Konieczne jest zatem planowanie iwdrażanie właściwych strategii edukacyjnych, które będą uwzględniały tendencje dominującew dzisiejszej kulturze.Oryginalność/wartość poznawcza podejścia. Artykuł zwraca uwagę na niezwykleważny i aktualny problem. Typowy dla naszej codzienności nawyk życia w pośpiechu niepozostaje obojętny dla szeroko rozumianego zdrowia. W literaturze naukowej niewiele uwagipoświęca się „kulturze przyspieszenia” i związanym z nią zagrożeniom zdrowotnym. Artykułuzupełnia także lukę w kwestii działań praktycznych – pokazuje bowiem obszary, na którychspecjaliści z zakresu edukacji zdrowotnej powinni koncentrować się w sposób szczególny.

Czy wprowadzana do 2020 roku reforma edukacji języka angielskiego w japońskich szkołach przyniesie efekty w zakresie mówienia? Analiza przyczyn słabej znajomości języka angielskiego wśród Japończyków oraz korelacji przyczyn z wprowadzanymi zmianami

Cel badań. Celem artykułu jest omówienie głównych przyczyn braku postępów w zakresie mówienia po angielsku uczniów japońskich szkół, co jest uwarunkowane kulturowo i systemowo, a także skonfrontowanie ich z reformą edukacji języka angielskiego, wprowadzaną w ramach przygotowań do Igrzysk Olimpijskich w Tokio w 2020 roku.Metodologia. Przedmiotem badania były artykuły naukowe dotyczące popularnej w Japonii gramatyczno-tłumaczeniowej metody nauczania języków obcych, związanego z nią systemu egzaminów wstępnych na uczelnie wyższe, który wpływa na treść zajęć w jednostkach edukacyjnych, jak również związek kultury kraju z pasywnością uczniów. Następnie przedstawiono główne założenia reformy oraz przeanalizowano je w kontekście przywołanych przeszkód, które ograniczają rozwój umiejętności komunikacyjnych uczniów.Wyniki i wnioski. Wykazano, że reforma będzie miała pozytywny wpływ na poziom komunikacji werbalnej w języku angielskim uczniów, m.in. dzięki wprowadzeniu lekcji ukierunkowanych na porozumiewanie się oraz doszkalaniu nauczycieli w dziedzinie metodyki nauczanego przedmiotu. Należy zaznaczyć, że reforma w niewystarczający sposób podejmuje problem pasywności uczniów, która wynika z powszechnie preferowanego zachowania na zajęciach szkolnych, a zmiany egzaminów wstępnych mogą okazać się zbyt powierzchowne, aby zmienić sposób nauczania języka w japońskich liceach. Z powodu małej ilości danych związanych z nadal zachodzącym procesem wprowadzania reformy, artykuł stanowi przyczynek do dalszych badań nad edukacją języka angielskiego w Japonii po jej pełnej implementacji.

Millennialsi - inspiratorzy nieuchronnych zmian w środowisku akademickim w Polsce i na świecie

Analiza cech przedstawicieli pokolenia Y, którzy współcześnie stanowią większość polskich studentów i młodych pracowników, dokonana na podstawie statystyk oraz materiałów opracowanych przez badaczy, socjologów, dziennikarzy, pracodawców i wykładowców akademickich. Opis nowych norm postępowania wprowadzanych przez millennialsów oraz ich konsekwencji w życiu społecznym, a szczególnie w środowiskach uniwersyteckich. Wyniki badań. Omówienie nowatorskich, zarówno udanych jak i nieskutecznych metod organizacji życia akademickiego będących odpowiedzią na współczesne zmiany obyczajowe. Opis metod wypracowanych i polecanych w amerykańskich szkołach, służących lepszej komunikacji międzypokoleniowej w szkołach wyższych.Wnioski. Autorka stara się zachęcić środowiska akademickie w Polsce i na świecie do przygotowania się do reformy organizacji życia akademickiego zarówno pod względem strukturalnym, jak i czysto mentalnym

Psychologiczne konsekwencje zatłoczenia społecznego i zaangażowania technologicznego u adolescentów i młodych dorosłych

Cel badań. Celem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie wyników badań eksploracyjnych mających na celu określenie związków i zależności pomiędzy zatłoczeniem, uzależnieniem od technologii, anhedonią i poczuciem jakości życia.Metodologia. W badaniu wzięło udział 410 osób (351 kobiet, średnia wieku 22,38). 64% zamieszkiwała miasta powyżej 100 tysięcy mieszkańców. Wykorzystano dane zarówno ilościowe (kwestionariusze: TUI, SHAPS, KPJŻ) oraz jakościowe (pytania otwarte do respodentów).Wyniki. Wykazano istotne statystycznie związki pomiędzy subiektywnym poczuciem zatłoczenia w sferze publicznej a spadkiem poczucia jakości życia w sferze psychofizycznej (r=-0,21) i psychospołecznej (r=-0,16). Z kolei poczucie zatłoczenia w sferze domowej wiązało się z wyższym uzależnieniem od technologii (r=0,17) i niższym poczuciem jakości życia w sferze psychofizycznej (r=-0,26), psychospołecznej (r=-0,25) i podmiotowej (r=-0,21). Wnioski. Wyniki wskazują, że poczucie zatłoczenia społecznego istotnie wiąże się z niższym dobrostanem jednostek oraz wykorzystywaną przez niego technologią, z drugiej strony – jest zjawiskiem heterogenicznym, niejednoznacznym i wymagającym dalszych badań w tym kierunku, biorąc pod uwagę wykazane różnice w przeżywaniu tego zjawiska przez jednostki ze względu na subiektywnie odczuwany dyskomfort oraz specyficzne czynniki sytuacyjne.

Grime jako muzyka i etnografia kryzysu

This article provides the reader with an overview of selected aspects of cultural significance of grime music and related phenomena. This musical genre creates an explicit background of contemporary social relations existing in multicultural, popular neighbourhoods of British cities. Grime’s relations with the media and the political surrounding partly resemble some features of the 1990’s “cultural boom”. However, grime and its network of relations live in the times of crisis. The overview of grime’s attributes presented hereinafter is an introduction to a wider study, currently in the process of development.

Obrazy miasta w utworach polskich grup alternatywnych lat 80. XX wieku

In the paper I analyse the ways in which a city, urbanism, city space and people living in urban environment are portrayed in Polish popular music, especially in the songs of Polish alternative bands of the 80. inthe 20th century. In popular music, the city is pictured in several ways, among which the most important is the use of words as song lyrics that illustrate urban way of life. The city should be treated as an immanent part of the rock music mythology present in the songs and in the names of bands. In the case of Polish alternative rock music of the 80.such elements are found in songs of such artists as Lech Janerka, Variete, Siekiera, Dezerter, Deuter, AyaRL. The visions of urbanism taken from their songs are the exemplifications used in the paper.

„Na kwadracie i na jego obwodzie”. Ursynowski rap lat 90.: konfrontacje, identyfikacje, aspiracje

The text is an attempt to define the relationship between the urban space of Ursynów housing estates and the early works of Polish rap created in this district. The first Warsaw rappers were coevals of the district (born in late 70. and early 80.), also their nicknames were borrowed from the elements of its space, and most of the songs – in which they imitate the practices of black American rappers – were also devoted to Ursynów. Nevertheless, a crack in this narrative can be observed – the artists mostly origin from good families, their sterile auto-creations seem not to be compatible with American rap stereotypes as imitated. The author follows and interprets these narrative discontinuities.

Home as Emotional Space in Marilynne Robinson’s Diptych about Gilead

The article discusses the controversial nature of home in Marilynne Robinson’s novels Home and Gilead. Family histories of two aging ministers – the Rev. Ames and the Rev. Boughton – are narrated in a way that brings together transcendentalist admiration of human uniqueness, political urgencies of the mid-20th century, theological dilemmas, and ideas of domesticity, identity and belonging. The concepts of uprootedness (Simone Weil) and home as an asylum and prison (Tadeusz Sławek) are used to analyze Robinson’s novels. The article views the representation of home as a place that challenges the alleged American tolerance and open-mindedness and subverts traditional patterns of domesticity.

The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, Doll-house Homicides, Foster Families, and the Subversion of Domesticity in CSI: Las Vegas

The article explores similarities and divergencies in how The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, doll-house style dioramas built by Frances Glessner Lee in the 1930s and 1940s in order to train homicide detectives, and miniature crime scenes crafted by a protagonist of the season 7 of the TV show CSI: Las Vegas modelled on them, figure female frustration connected with the traditional shape of family and domesticity. The dioramas reveal and simultaneously contain the foundational Derridean darkness underlying the concept of domesticity.

Od jabłka do „chińczyka”. Praktyki żywieniowe bohaterek prawniczych seriali stacji TVN

In this article I try to analyze the dietary habits of the female protagonists of TVN legal TV series Magda M. and Agata’s Law. Although there’s been only a five year gap between original broadcasts of Magda M. and Agata's Law and action of both takes place in Warsaw lawyers environment, their lifestyle, food styles and upper-middle class problems are presented in a completely different way. Those TV series start a reflection on whether the protagonists of the series are paying attention to what they eat and whether food can be a determinant of social relationships. Analyzing the jungle of conflicting signals about diets, the growing trends for cooking and healthy nutrition, I ask the question about choices of independent and self-sufficient female protagonists of drama series, whose creators recognize that pro-health attitudes should be promoted among viewers.

NETWORK COMMUNITIES AS AN EXPRESSION OF INCLUSIVE CULTURE OF PARTICIPATION IN POLITICAL PROTESTS: THE SUNFLOWER MOVEMENT CASE STUDY

This article offers an analysis of the ways creation of a community influences the activity of users expressed in their network behaviour. It has been assumed that a varied choice of used tools and channels of communication characterising societies with a high level of technological development simultaneously influences fragmentation of network communication processes. Inclusive culture of participation becomes limited, which is the result of the degree of engagement of users which influence participation in a virtual community. This leads to their differentiation in relation to content and choice of the used channels during network communication. Another factor limiting participation is also communication activity of administrators of a virtual community who impose the dominating content of messages. The research results are a part of scientific research concerning the role of leaders in network communication as well as the creation of network communities that accompany political protests and demonstrations.
