W Polsce proces starzenia się ludności postępuje bardzo szybko, co zmienia kształt „polskiej kultury starości”. Na potrzeby niniejszej książki termin ten definiujemy jako zestaw norm i praktyk społeczno-kulturowych – realizowanych zarówno przez osoby starsze, jak i osoby młode wobec osób starszych – szczególnie istotnych na dalszych etapach życia. W naszych badaniach skoncentrowaliśmy się na „młodych” emerytach, a więc takich, którzy formalnie przeszli na emeryturę w okresie ostatnich pięciu lat. Ich doświadczenie emerytury jest więc krótkie, można powiedzieć, że są w fazie przejściowej pomiędzy kolejnymi etapami życia – pomiędzy późną dorosłością a starością. Ale jest to okres kluczowy, jeżeli chcemy gruntownie poznać doświadczenie starzenia się i uchwycić bieg życia jednostki w całej jego złożoności.Przejście na emeryturę może być postrzegane jako znaczący moment w życiu człowieka. Ma on wpływ nie tylko na jednostkę przechodzącą na emeryturę, ale oddziaływa również na innych ludzi: członków rodziny, współpracowników, przyjaciół i znajomych. Jest więc kluczowy dla wielu wymiarów relacji społecznych. Pojawia się jednak pytanie, czy stanowi on punkt zwrotny w wymiarze tożsamościowym człowieka, czy w zasadniczy sposób odbija się na sposobie definiowania samego siebie i odnajdywania się w otaczającej rzeczywistości społecznej. Odpowiedź na to pytanie nie może być (i nie jest) odpowiedzią łatwą. Moment przechodzenia na emeryturę, jak i sam czas emerytury, nie jest bowiem doświadczeniem jednorodnym.

Międzynarodowe ruchy wędrówkowe ludności to jeden z najbardziej fascynujących problemów współczesnego świata. Zagadnienie to budziło zawsze żywe zainteresowanie nie tylko naukowców czy polityków, lecz także opinii publicznej. W ostatnich kilku dekadach temat ten nabrał szczególnego znaczenia. Dzisiejsze migracje różnią się bowiem znacząco od tych sprzed kilkudziesięciu lat i jeszcze wcześniejszych, przede wszystkim za sprawą uwarunkowania postępującymi procesami globalizacji. Każda kolejna fala imigrantów zmieniała obraz Ameryki. Każda miała też swoją specyfikę, gdyż przybywali tam ludzie z różnych rejonów świata, z różnych kultur i różne zewnętrzne okoliczności towarzyszyły ich przyjazdom. Stale aktualne jest stwierdzenie, że największą siłą Ameryki jest to, iż tak wiele osób chce w niej mieszkać. Zdaniem Richarda Floridy „prawdziwym zagrożeniem dla bezpieczeństwa Ameryki jest nie terroryzm, lecz to, że kreatywni, utalentowani ludzie mogą przestać chcieć tu przyjeżdżać". Tematem książki są współczesne migracje do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Ponieważ od ponad czterdziestu lat do tego kraju przybywa kolejna wielka fala imigrantów, stanowi on dobrą ilustrację zależności między migracjami a procesami globalizacji we współczesnym świecie.

The significance of the publication entitled Szlovákia lakosságának községsoros nemzetiségi összetétele az 1970. és az 1980. évi népszámlálás adatai alapján [Municipality-based Ethnic Composition of Slovakia´s Population According to the 1970 and 1980 Census Data] lies in the fact that the municipality-based data of the two censuses relating to the ethnicity of the population have not been published up to date. The interpretation of data is supported by an introductory study presenting a detailed analysis of the main features of the municipality-based ethnicity numbers from the 1970 and 1980 censuses. The appendix contains various indicators that help the reader compare census data while taking into account changes in settlement patterns in the years 1970, 1980 and 2011.

Мерки за преодоляване на демографските проблеми в България през периода 1879-1989 г.

Identifying measures to tackle demographic problems and their implementation is the State’s purposeful activity reflecting Government authority’s views in the field of demographic development and is aimed at the formation of the desired type of population’s reproduction. This type of activity in Bulgaria has mainly been oriented in three main lines over the reference period: First: focusing fertility rate improvement; second: mortality rate reduction; Third: population’s territorial redistribution impacting the mechanic growth. Based on the analysis we can say that measures, which were aimed at resolving demographic problems in the country, took place in Bulgaria throughout the studied period. These were characterised as follows: 1) they were based on conceptual formulations, distinguished by its relevance, and timeliness; and 2) stressed continuity both over time and in relation to the purpose for which they were scheduled. That turned into one of the factors affecting the population growth reported until 1989. In spite of the registered growth, the negative trend was defining the overall dynamics of the natural increase values, whose drop for the period 1881–1989 was nearly 30 times (from 16,9‰ in 1881 to 0.6‰ in 1989). That trend was a product owed to a number of different reasons – the shrunk scope of measures conducted, the unrealistic defining of the main subject in individual directions of theirs, inefficiency of some of the principles that kind of activity was built upon, the discrepancies between legal standards and actions applied in the course of the implementation thereof, etc. Moreover, those were the key circumstances that predetermined the chance to fulfil the main objective meant to be fulfilled by that type of policy, i.e. the achievement of sustainable demographic development.

Economics and Aging: Emerging Issues

Population aging is an unstoppable demographic trend on a global level. Data and estimations point out that by 2030, 1 in 6 people will be 60 years and over, and the share of the population aged 60 and over will increase from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion. Furthermore, by 2050, the world’s population aged 60 and older will reach 2.1 billion. Persons aged 80 years and older are also expected to triple between 2020 and 2050, reaching 426 million (World Health Organization, 2021). Prolonged life expectancy, as well as changes in the age structure of the population, where the share of the elderly population is increasing and the share of the working population is on a downward trajectory, have significantly changed perceptions and paradigms related to an individual and collective approach to aging and its consequences for the economy and society as a whole. Completed adulthood & public policies. How institutional and policy instruments facilitate the educational, vocational, family and civic life of Polish young adults?

This publication is a contribution to the debate on the possibilities to ensure the provision of social work services to older people in the context of demographic ageing of the Czech population. In the first part we discuss the functional potential and its assessment as a tool to adequately set the level of support for people whose self-sufficiency is limited. The problem of reduced self-sufficiency is regarded from the perspective of critical gerontology. The second part includes chapters dealing with practical possibilities to reduce the risks of socially constructed dependency, particularly the possibility for older people to remain in their usual environment. We will tackle the questions of support for home carers, of technological innovations and their significance for home care and of dying in the home environment. In the last part we discuss the potential of social work to help older people remain in their normal environment.

PERSPECTIVE DE DEZVOLTARE URBANĂ

This volume contains three background studies designed to underpin the General Plan of Development of the city Miercurea Ciuc. The first study aims at presenting the economic analysis of the city by elaborating the current situation analysis. The main objective was to develop an accurate analysis on the local economy, on the existing problems and relations within the local economic system. In addition to the secondary data, a field observation was also carried out regarding the situation of industrial districts and other economic activities. After analysing the situation, a SWOT analysis of the settlement was conducted, followed by the definition of the main strategic directions and the formulation of a strategic vision. Following that, three alternative development scenarios were formulated, among which the most viable one was chosen, partly integrating the other two. The second part of this volume presents the tourist town of Miercurea Ciuc. The study is based on the analysis of the inner areas of the municipality classified into four categories, according to their touristic potential. The main objective is to identify activities and projects proposed in these delineated areas of interest. Therefore, the study presents the objectives and proposed activities for six areas with a high or moderate interest in Miercurea Ciuc, and some local hazards that may affect the balanced urban and touristic development of that area. Part three of this volume is divided into three tests. The first part presents the analysis of demographic processes in Miercurea Ciuc. The demographic analysis presents the causes of population evolution (natural movement and migration), the changes in the population and labour force, and finally the data on housing. The second part of the sociology study presents the demographic projection of the city’s population in the period between 2002 and 2022. Calculations on the population growth were made by the application of the Cohort-Component Method, using a software programme that allows the simulation of arbitrary assumptions about factors that may influence population movements. The third part of this study provides a focus-group type of evaluation designed to present ideas and demands of the urban population regarding tourism. Koprodukcja usług społecznych źródłem osobistej i społecznej produktywności osób starszych. Studium socjologiczne na przykładzie beneficjentów Programu Wieloletniego „Senior+"

The presented volume is the author’s proposal of a sociological description of the phenomenon of co-production of social services as a source of personal and social productivity of older people. The main conceptual axis of the study, which defines its cognitive goal, is an attempt to link the idea of co-production of social services with the productivity of older people, indicating the potential relations occurring between these phenomena. According to the author’s knowledge, both in Poland and abroad, no analyses in this area have been conducted so far, not only within sociology, but also within other sciences. Therefore, the theoretical aim of the study was to describe and rank the concepts constituting the backbone and filling in the presented theoretical perspective, such as co-production, personal and social productivity of the older persons, social services, human capital and social capital. The conceptual analysis carried out resulted in the development of the author’s operational framework for the services organised and provided under the “Senior+” Multiannual Programme, showing how co-production of older people, based on the use of their human and social capital, generates their personal and social productivity. Therefore, it can be considered that the publication is a direct response to the persistent deficit of comprehensive studies in this area in the Polish scientific space.

The book maps the ways to the analysis of the genome of Gregor Johann Mendel, a project which was carried out to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of this important scientist. It describes the exhumation of his remains from the Augustinian tomb at the Central Cemetery in Brno and the scientific examination that followed, as well as the search for traces of Mendel’s DNA on his personal belongings kept in the Augustinian Abbey in Old Brno. The individual chapters, that is, the ways of research, introduce the reader to the initial impulses leading to the archaeological research on the tomb and the subsequent analysis of Mendel’s genome. They describe the process of identifying the remains found in the grave with the person of Abbot Mendel, the anthropological research on his skeletal remains, as well as the process of isolation and analysis of the DNA of this historical figure. Rich photographic documentation chronicles the exciting work of the scientific team. Thanks to their efforts, the book reveals surprising findings and new, important details about the founder of genetics.

Držení těla a funkční stav pohybového aparátu u dětí ve věku 6-8 let: případová studie

The monograph focuses on the posture of children aged 6–8, specifically on the period before they enter the primary school and on the first two years of schooling. In six case studies, we focus on the quality of posture, the functional state of selected muscles and muscle groups of the monitored children and their physical activity regime. In order to examine the musculoskeletal system, we use visual methods and functional muscle test by Janda, and we also use observation, interview, questionnaire survey and other methods. The findings of the original research provide detailed knowledge regarding posture, the state of the musculoskeletal system and the locomotor regime of children at school and outside, which partly differ from other authors’ findings.
