CONCERNING THE ISSUE OF TEACHING COURSE “HISTORY OF UKRAINE AND UKRAINIAN CULTURE” FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

Author(s): Natalya Skrytska,Yulia Rusnak / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

Recently the number of foreign students in Ukrainian universities, particularly in medical schools, significantly has increased. The most important problem for foreign students is the process of adaptation in Ukrainian society. This is especially acute for first-year students who do not yet have an experience of residency in other countries. The most important thing for them is to understand the peculiarities of social and cultural structures of the new society. In the educational process of higher education institutions this understanding is formed by studying the disciplines of the humanities cycle, the most important of which are the History of Ukraine and Ukrainian Culture occupies. In recent years the educational and psychological aspects have been studied by such scientists as O. Adamenko, N. Batanina, T. Pylypyshyn, S. Bondarenko, S. Boeva, I. Melnychuk and others. So, in particular, S. Boeva in his report “Methods and Peculiarities of Teaching History of Ukraine to Foreign Students” clearly explains the specifics of work of Ukrainian teachers with foreign students on the example of the course “History of Ukraine”. The author emphasizes the humanization and humanization of the educational process, taking into account the specific adaptation of foreign students in Ukrainian society. In addition, the first two textbooks on the history of Ukraine in English were published in 2008 by Svitlana Boeva. A profound analysis of the peculiarities of social adaptation of foreign students in the field of Ukrainian language study has been made by teachers of the Department of Social Sciences and Ukrainian Studies of the Bukovynian State Medical University. Many articles are published annually on the peculiarities of studying and mastering the subject of the Ukrainian language, taking into account the peculiarities of the mentality of foreign citizens. However, the peculiarities of studying and mastering by foreign students of the human sciences remain unexplored, which proves the relevance of our study.

Changes in aggression and stress in perpetrators and victims of domestic violence due to the “Blue Cards” procedure

Author(s): Aleksandra Maria Rogowska,Zofia Kardasz,Sebastian Wicher / Language(s): English,Polish Issue: 10/2020

The research aimed to examine changes in stress and aggression syndrome among victims and perpetrators of domestic violence while participating in the “Blue Cards” procedure. The study participants were 30 female domestic violence victims, ranged in age between 27 and 58 years (M = 4,33; SD = 9,19), and 30 male perpetrators of domestic violence aged between 22 and 56 years old (M = 36,97; SD = 10,06). Aggression syndrome was measured using the Inventory of Psychological Aggression Syndrome (IPSA II), and the stress level was assessed by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). The prospective study used a test-retest procedure. Both aggression and stress were examined in the whole sample of 60 individuals twice: at baseline and six months after the “Blue Cards” procedure was introduced. Participants have rated self-report aggression syndrome and stress, and also they have assessed the aggression syndrome of his/her partner. Nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank tests have been used for test-retest comparisons. The results show that active participation in assistant activities decreased the level of stress in domestic violence victims and their perception of perpetrators’ aggression syndrome. The “Blue Cards” procedure may be considered an effective method of supporting victims and preventing domestic violence among perpetrators.

Znaczenie regionalne umowy o poszukiwaniu i ratownictwie w Arktyce

Author(s): Michał Łuszczuk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2014

This paper examines the Arctic Search and Rescue Agreement – the first legally binding instrument adopted under the auspices of the Arctic Council – and analyses its direct and indirect implication for both the development of the Arctic shipping and the perspectives of regionalization processes. It is argued that the adoption of the Agreement should be perceived as an ambiguous achievement since, while its direct relevance for the Arctic shipping is not very substantial at the moment, it however reaffirms the indispensable and leading position of the Arctic Council in the regional governance system and offers important prospects for deepening the cooperation among the Arctic states. The Arctic SAR Agreement is also recognised as a manifestation of exercising the Arctic sovereignty by the eight states (also against non-Arctic actors) and consequently a sign of growing regionalization of the Arctic.

Results from many studies indicate that throughout medical education students experience high levels of stress and depression. The aim of the current study was to assess and compare Bulgarian and Turkish medical students' levels of stress and depression. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 546 students (276 foreign students from Medical University – Sofia and 270 medical students from several medical universities in Ankara). The study instrument included basic socio-demographic questions, Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ-40 items) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Turkish medical students showed higher levels of stress and depression than foreign students from Bulgaria. We found that all types of stressors in medical students had a relationship with depression. Results of our study imply that medical students need access to psychological support throughout their education.

Author(s): Suada Kapić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 89-90/2020

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness Training in a European Probation Training Curriculum

Author(s): Coral Sirdifield,Mark Gardner,Charlie Brooker / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2010

In 2009 the CEP held a conference centring around the concept of a pan-European probation training curriculum. This article draws on the results of an evaluation of some training conducted in the UK to argue that mental health awareness training should form part of such a common training programme. The article outlines the potential benefits of making such training mandatory for staff working in probation systems across Europe. In addition, it identifies the role of instructional design in constructing learning resources which are flexible enough to be reconfigured to be relevant in different cultural contexts without diminishing the learning process.

Grad, industrija i zdravlje. Naracije lokalnoga stanovništva o koksari u Bakru

Grad, industrija i zdravlje. Naracije lokalnoga stanovništva o koksari u Bakru

Author(s): Robert Doričić,Nevena Škrbić Alempijević,Iva Rinčić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 43/2020

Using the example of the coke plant in Bakar that was shut down at the end of the twentieth century, the authors discuss the relationship between industry and the city as seen through the contemporary viewpoint of the local inhabitants. The article combines the notions of urban studies, post-industrial anthropology and studies of public health issues to analyse the social dynamics and clashes caused by industrialisation and deindustrialisation in and around Bakar. The authors deal with the transformations in people’s everyday lives caused by the politics and practices of (de)industrialisation in the second half of the twentieth century. The focus is on narratives from Bakar inhabitants related to the impact of the coke plant on environmental pollution and quality of life, primarily in terms of health. The authors re-examine the term “post-industrial city” and question what means to live in a town burdened by its industrial past.

CULTURAL CODES OF FEAR: GENRE, GENDER, (MALE) MADNESS

CULTURAL CODES OF FEAR: GENRE, GENDER, (MALE) MADNESS

Author(s): Nataša Polgar / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

This paper focuses on a specific type of archival material from the first psychiatric institution in Croatia, the Stenjevec Royal National Institute for the Insane in Zagreb, today the Vrapče University Psychiatric Hospital, dating from the period from its foundation in 1879 until 1900. More specifically, it focuses on patient narratives featuring fantastical beings, i.e., narrations about their life relying on the genre of belief legends. Based on this material, which is considered to be an important albeit atypical folkloristic corpus, the paper analyzes and interprets the status and functions of the genre of belief legends (more specifically, the memorate) in daily life narratives, personal stories and in coding affects (primarily fear). The role of belief legends is examined not only from the perspective of oral tradition and literature, but also in terms of their social and psychological position, and through the lens of psychiatric discourse of the time, which recognizes such narratives merely as symptoms of madness, translating and coding them as the language of abnormality and psychopathology.

Author(s): Tamara Artacker,Jorge Campanini,Eduardo Gudynas / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 1/2020

In the context of the Covi19 pandemic, South American government sustained agricultural extractivisms (including agriculture, livestock and forestry). In some cases, they are presented as a solution to the reduction of oil and mineral extractivisms. In other cases, changes occur between different agricultural products. This strategy results in maintaining social and environmental impacts, and strengths asymmetries between business actors and small farmers or peasants. Despite the crisis due to the pandemic was an opportunity for those alternatives focused on supplying food to overcome the nutritional component among the poorest sectors, the prevailing strategy promotes an agriculture that supply merchandises for export, resulting in promoting extractivisms. The spill-over effects were maintained and in some cases deepened, such as social, labor and environmental flexibilities, and public policies that support and shield extractivism were strengthened.

Miejsce szczecińskiego Pedagogium Książęcego / Królewskiego Gimnazjum Karolińskiego w szwedzkim systemie kształcenia medycznego w latach 1646–1713

Author(s): Joanna Nieznanowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 02/2020

The purpose of the present study is to describe the medical education provided in the 17th century Szczecin in the context of the Swedish academic network of the time, comprising five universities with the medical faculties (Uppsala, Dorpat/Tartu, Åbo/Turku, Greifswald, Lund). Subject to comparative analysis were: the number and continuity of the personnel of the chairs of medicine, the availability and quality of the infrastructure used in didactics and the scientific research carried out by the professors of medicine, the number and topics of the medical discussions and dissertations presented with the participation of students, and the scientific activity of the professors of medicine from various centres. One of the analyzed centres with which the Gymnasium chair of medicine couldn’t be on a par in neither of the analyzed aspects was the faculty of medicine in Uppsala. The most significant difference between Szczecin and Greifswald was the Greifswald faculty’s of medicine right to grant the Ph.D. degree. However, Szczecin could not only equal with the new centres, established in the discussed period (Dorpat, Åbo, Lund), but often surpassed them thanks to the commitment and activity of the professors working there.

The Impact of Cultural Intelligence on Multinational Leadership: A Semantic Review

Author(s): Dan Paiuc / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Never before the need to function efficiently in multicultural contexts has been more apparent than today as, in our global and interconnected world, cultural intelligence (CQ) has become the central pillar of efficient leadership. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to critically analyze the specific literature on cultural intelligence and its modeling role for performant leadership and to identify gaps or inconsistencies of research employing this concept to contribute to its revamping. Based on a systematic review, we have structured this article into four directions of conceptual clarification, which could improve the current notions and applicability of CQ. The first two sections investigate and present the existing conflicting definitions and models of culture and cultural intelligence and move towards the common ground in our new challenging economic context. The third direction particularly questions the validity of the actual cultural intelligence scales and will try to point the need to develop new adapted measuring tools. The last one focuses on the limitations and new influencing factors of the link between cultural intelligence and efficient leadership, considering that globalization, the digital revolution, immigration, circular economy, or artificial intelligence are shaping a new operating business model. Our conceptual research is based on a systematic approach to literature and a critical analysis of the main concepts and ideas dealing with cultural intelligence. The findings, regrouped around inconsistencies, show that the new economic reality might impact the existing academic theories regarding the link between cultural intelligence and multinational leadership. The research limits are bordered by emotional intelligence (EQ), an individual parameter, and main leadership success factors. However, our present work will develop an understanding of the cultural intelligence impact on multinational leadership and opens the gate for future research questions and challenges arising from this study's findings.

Author(s): Sergiu–Dan Iurian / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2020

March 11, 2020 will forever go down in history as a sad date for humanity. It is the date when the World Health Organization declared the spread of the COVID-19 as being redefined as a pandemic crisis. Since then, and even before that, the spread of the virus has left its mark over the way migration is being understood. Usually governments had to tackle mostly problems regards illegal migration and migrant flows due to war zones. Since the pandemic crisis and its impact over the economies, the world is facing another challenge: the one regarding huge legal labour migrant flows, of people who were left out of jobs by the economic impact of the pandemic crisis. The purpose of this article is to make light into the current global status regarding the most affected parts of the world where positive and negative migration is evolving and how authorities adapt their methods and respond to such challenges, but also to take into consideration the future of illegal migration.
