Finding Satoyama – Forest bathing as a creative practice of knowledge creation and healing in/with/through damaged landscapes

Author(s): Wendy Wuyts / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Many people in the Western world are estranged from the more-than-human world, which negatively impacts their health and well-being. This article investigates the effect of forest bathing as an intervention on how designers and other citizens can reconnect with nature. Walking, talking, and sitting spot practices are not only research methods that help to understand the histories and interdependencies of a landscape and contribute to society and science, but can also be used as mental health promotion tools to generate self-care, especially when dealing with the experience of wounds through the inner and outer landscapes in which we engage. This article is based on an extensive review of a multidisciplinary body of literature. Although mainly conceptual, this article is empirically informed and illustrated by my experiences in Japan. By sharing an autoethnography of experiencing a Japanese landscape through five walks along the same trail over 1.5 years while exploring the deepening journey into the forest bathing practice, this article illustrates the opportunities and benefits of deploying forest bathing in landscape architecture and other regional and urban planning interventions. It also examines the concept of self-care and environmental citizenship and how they emerge in the forest bathing practice.

Her Parasites: A poetic ecospiritual perspective of the COVID-19 pandemic and nature’s intelligence

Author(s): Komathi Kolandai / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

In this transdisciplinary perspective, I present my initial ecospiritual thinking about the COVID-19 pandemic in a poem, titled Her Parasites. I identify with other thinkers – both those in science and not – who articulated ecophilosophical musings about the pandemic in various ways, some of whom were met with mockery and censure. In the hope that it will inspire openness and a sense of curiosity, I draw on metaphysical insights from Vedic treatises and the literature on environmental decline, zoonotic epidemiology, health science, animal agriculture, animal ethics, and animal sentience to explain my poem’s philosophical and ecological framework. I focus on the scientific knowledge of epidemics caused by viruses that transcend species boundaries, why cross-species hopping occurs, and the nature (and incredible intelligence) of such viruses. I invite readers to consider ancient Vedic principles that articulate the rationale for living harmoniously with other sentient beings and entities. Considering the unseen metaphysical association between the pandemic and animal cruelty explained through the Vedic laws of Karmā, I present the possibility that one of the lessons Mother Earth might have wanted the Homo sapiens species to learn from the COVID-19 pandemic is its need to alter its diet. I end with a discussion on the possibility and value of this change. The downplaying or denial of animal sentience (strategies to overcome the psychological discomfort of incongruence between loving animals and eating them, as described in social psychology), is a barrier to this change. However, observed through a Vedic lens, this cognitive dissonance suggests that the Homo sapiens species is innately humane, the realisation of which might hold the key to this dietary change.

Očuvanje zdravlja – „interferencija“ konstruktivna ili destruktivna

Author(s): Ivana Marasović Šušnjara,Maja Vejić,Julija Vejić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 25/2024

According to the World Health Organization, health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being, regardless of race, religion, political beliefs, economic and social status. Although we tend to believe it, health is not self-evident and is also conditioned by the factors beyond our control. Today, we share many leading public health problems globally. In solving them, various interventions are carried out, often with the absence of targeted results. Improving and preserving health is a big challenge and is the responsibility of the individual, the health system and other participants and is the result of their interaction. But, is the action of these participants coherent? Is their interaction constructive? What to do to prevent destruction? These are just some of the questions that should be answered in order for interventions to adequately respond to the challenges.

Contribution to the evaluation of the biomass of medicinal and aromatic plants in Morocco: Case of Globularia alypum

Contribution to the evaluation of the biomass of medicinal and aromatic plants in Morocco: Case of Globularia alypum

Author(s): A. Ben Salem,A. Boujraf,Y. Dallahi,A. El Aboudi / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Morocco is distinguished by the richness of its flora, including medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) which play an important role, particularly in rural populations. Due to pressures often associated with overexploitation, monitoring of MAPs is essential to ensure their sustainability. This study looked to explore the status of Globularia alypum in the Amsittene site of biological and ecological interest (SBEI) in Morocco. A destructive technique was adopted to quantify biomass and productivity of G. alypum at six sites with different ecological characteristics in the Amsisttene SBEI. Linear regression was used to model G. alypum biomass as a function of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Tree cover had the greatest influence on G. alypum dynamics, showing a significant effect on shrub height, leaf productivity, and total productivity, as did the cutting method, with the highest biomass estimated based on pair matching of similar individuals. NDVI was found to be an adequate indicator of G. alypum biomass, given their high correlation (0.84) with the selected model having an R2 of 0.7. The yield of extracted essential oils ranged from 3.19 to 113.43 L, from which 10 chemical compounds were identified, with ethylvanillin being the most prominent.

O leku roślinnym: krótka historia pojęcia i związanych z nim regulacjach prawnych.

Author(s): Robert Księżopolski / Language(s): Polish Issue: Supl. 1/2024

In Antiquity, the term “medicine” meant a substance used for medicinal purposes, of plant, mineral or animal origin. Nowadays, in addition to the term “medicine”, the legal term “medicinal product” is used more and more often. According to the tradition of galenic pharmacy, the term plant medicine (or medicinal product of plant origin) meant whole medicinal plants, their specific parts (herb, flowers, leaf, inflorescences, roots, tubers, rhizomes, etc.) used for medicinal purposes, or their various formulations obtained from fresh or dried plants. Nowadays, the term medicinal product is reserved for substances with documented effects, confirmed by safety studies and clinical trials. Among products of plant origin, there are many other categories of products that do not constitute medicinal products, i.e. do not have “the ability to prevent or treat diseases occurring in humans or animals, or are administered for the purpose of making a diagnosis or for the purpose of restoring, improving or modifying physiological functions of the body through pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action”, according to the definition of a medicinal product defined in the Pharmaceutical Law in Poland. The differentiation of plant-based products is based on their properties and the purpose of their use, not on the source of origin.

Puterea băncii și protecția consumatorului în contextul creșterii inflației

Author(s): Andreea Corina Târșia / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2022

Recent events have negatively influenced the stability of the financial sector, the COVID 19 pandemic, followed by the war in Ukraine, materializing secondary effects and preexisting vulnerabilities, especially associated with sectors dependent on energy raw materials. Along with the double threats of the pandemic and an economic crisis, consumer protection is undermined in three aspects: by the ambiguous regulation of the credit contract concluded with the consumer; by the improper regulation of the assignment of the contract and debt and by the questionable attribution of the character of an enforceable title to the credit contract.

FISCAL RESPONSE IN COVID-19 CRISIS – CASE OF THE EUROZONE

Author(s): Maria Karamanoli / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

Aim: The paper makes two important contributions to the fiscal policy literature during the COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing the way Eurozone countries responded with fiscal expansion or restriction as a means to manage the pandemic crisis. This research investigates the national governments’ fiscal policies introduced to manage the COVID-19 pandemic within economic, political and institutional contexts, focusing on European countries that are part of the Eurozone. It demonstrates similarities and heterogeneity in three dimensions of fiscal policy responses to COVID-19 (the size of fiscal spending, the type and targets of fiscal policy responses) across 19 Eurozone countries, in the period effective from the pandemic until January 2022. Methods: A Cross-Country Analysis and Statistical Analysis in 19 Eurozone Countries was applied. Results: Eurozone countries with strong economies (Germany, France) implemented fiscal expansion directly to cope with the pandemic while weaker economies (Estonia, Spain) responded late. Additionally, the business sector was supported first, instead of the health sector, by governments. Conclusions: The paper makes two important contributions to the fiscal policy literature during the COVID-19 pandemic. The original contribution of this research is that it is one of the first comparative analysis studies to focus on the European region regarding national fiscal policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Existing studies on COVID-19 policy responses have primarily focused on public health measures.

A Longitudinal Overview of the Situation of Families from an Inclusion Perspective Environmental and Family Factors Associated with Special Educational Needs

A Longitudinal Overview of the Situation of Families from an Inclusion Perspective Environmental and Family Factors Associated with Special Educational Needs

Author(s): Gergő Vidaa,Beatrix Faragób / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

While diagnostic systems such as the ICD-11 and DSM-5 exclude social and economic factors as potential causes of disability and learning problems, statistics from the educational and social systems of many European countries contradict this approach. Our research focuses on the compensatory strategies of the education system in Hungary, as the literature suggests that disability, differential development, and learning problems are a major stress factor and problem to be solved for the education system, the individual, and the family. An examination of the Hungarian system is particularly warranted in light of the results of the most recent PISA surveys, which show that educational failure in this country is strongly correlated with family background. Our research has demonstrated that special educational needs are more strongly related to family background and social factors than to other factors, which may be indirect evidence that family and social background are significant variables in the management of stress. In the presence of an unfavorable social background, disability and learning disabilities place greater pressure and stress on the family, increasing the risk of disconnection and early school leaving.Consequently, the role of proper education and cooperation is of paramount importance, as it is clear that neither the family nor the education system alone can be successful in dealing with stress. Our research has shown that resilience is intimately connected to parental factors, which are strongly influenced by parental education. Therefore, stress management and the avoidance of additional stress can be linked to the education system, even if indirectly. Furthermore, the formal education system is a crucial site for fostering effective attitudes, underscoring the importance of formal education in shaping attitudes and preparing individuals for lifelong learning, rather than simply imparting knowledge. To effectively manage stress, individuals must continuously develop and learn new coping strategies, and consciously cultivate resilience, as future stressors are unpredictable.

Author(s): Abdullah A. Alasmari,Ibrahim Q. Hakami,Bandar S Alzahrain,Izzeldeen A. Abdullah / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

This study uses exploratory factor analysis and item response theory (IRT) to analyze the psychometric qualities of the Arabic version of the Scale of Coronavirus Anxiety (CAS) (EFA). 1188 participants, chosen by convenience sampling, are from six Arab nations: (391 participants from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), (257 from Egypt), (305) from Jordan, (135) from Bahrain, and 100 from the Sultanate of Oman. Of these, (389) participants are men and (799) are women. According to the EFA models, the data is represented by a one-dimensional structure that is dependable and invariant between genders. Similarly, CAS is more informative for high levels of COVID-19 anxiety, according to IRT data. The CAS in Arabic has adequate psychometric properties is a short measure to be used for COVID-19 anxiety.

The Iraqi EFL University Learners' Abilities in Blended Education at Corona Virus Time

The Iraqi EFL University Learners' Abilities in Blended Education at Corona Virus Time

Author(s): Mohammed Jasim Betti,Abdullah Algum Saeed / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2024

The COVID-19 pandemic affected many aspects of daily life notably the educational system in the world including Iraq. Studying the effects of online English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction is essential in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic's emergence and expansion as well as the move in education toward online courses. This study is concerned with the Iraqi EFL university learners' abilities in blended education at Corona Virus time. Therefore, the study seeks to find answers for the following questions: 1) what is the effect of blended education on the Iraqi EFL ability? 2) what are differences in effect between online teaching and paper and pencil exam in blended teaching? The aims of this study include analyzing the effect of blended education on the Iraqi EFL ability and stating the differences in effect between online teaching and paper and pencil exam in blended teaching. Documents, which represent a very useful methodological instrument is the data collection method used in this study. The data consists of examinations in years (2020– 2021 / 2021–2022) in the department of English, College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Thi-Qar. More than 200 Iraqi EFL students are included in the sample for this study. The study concludes that, there are no differences among the results of language, linguistics, literature, educational and non-departmental course in the online teaching /testing in the blended education. Over the course of the three paper-and-pencil exam sessions (2020-2021) the percentage of EFL learners' results began to decline with verification in the type of materials. The percentages of success in online teaching are also very high, and all subjects were taught in a blended learning. Online teaching and learning, whether as pure or in blended education had a negative impact on students' comprehension skills; the students were unable to understand the material when taking classes electronically. It is evident that a considerable percentage of students failed in the three paper and pencil subjects (drama, linguistics, and grammar), which were taught in a face-to-face way. Years of online learning caused the students to lose their capacity for memorization.

Author(s): Veljko Mijušković,Slobodan Aćimović,Ana Todorović Spasenić / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 2/2023

The quality management system and the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard emphasize the importance of identifying, evaluating and defining risk management measures in order to generate the achievement of goals in the management of all processes in the company. External risks, dominantly determined by the current economic and geopolitical circumstances, determine both survival and the potential for improving the competitive position. The business practice of the company in the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, the crisis in Ukraine and the current global recession crystallized the importance of risk management for successfully overcoming all consequences and realizing the mission, vision and business goals. Establishing efficient and effective risk management is an important predictor of generating success in all areas of management, especially important aspects of supply process, i.e. supplier relationship management, customer relationship management and the entire supply chain management, which is the main topic of analysis within the paper. The paper also partially deals with the analysis of the impact of risk management on reaching the level of business excellence, which is, in the business practice of companies in the conditions of the global recession, crystallized as one of the key competitive advantages.

Exploring the Drivers of Under-5 Mortality in Low-Income Countries: An Econometric Analysis of Health, Energy, and Urbanization Factors

Author(s): Elvira Nica,Felix Puime-Guillén,Joanna Szydło,Oana Matilda Sabie,Danijela Pantović,Alina Samoilă / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

Due to some social, economic, and environmental factors, the under-5 mortality rates in low-income countries (LICs) are usually high. The primary purpose of this study is to determine the impact of health expenditures, electricity consumption, economic growth, renewable energy, urbanization, and fertility rates on the under-5 mortality rates in low-income countries. For the theoretical framework, the Grossman health production theory is conducted. Due to the existence of the cross-sectional dependency problem and the unit-roots problem, the static and dynamic models are employed to evaluate the long-run estimation findings. The static and dynamic models of the fixed effect, random effect, system generalized method of moments, and dynamic generalized method of moments illustrated that health expenditure, electricity, GDP, and urbanization significantly alleviated the infants’ mortality rates under-5 in the low-income countries, by contrast, renewable energy, and fertility rates contributed to the increase of the mortality rates under-5. The quantile regression evaluates the validity and robustness of the results. The robust outcomes narrated that health expenditure, electricity, GDP, and urbanization declined the mortality rates whenever the fertility rate increased the mortality rates. The research suggests important policy recommendations for low-income countries.

The relationship between organizational climate and organizational commitment in light of the employee empowerment behavior variable during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case study of the general hospital of Kettar Algeria

Author(s): Hassiba Hadouga / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Research background: Organizational commitment within an organization is usually considered a factor that can positively influence employee behaviour, but not only directly, but also through the organizational climate within the organization. Purpose of the article: Many studies have focused on investigating the relationship of organizational commitment and employee behaviour, as well as by focusing on the relationship between organizational climate and employee behaviour. Therefore, this article also aims to verify the relationship of organizational commitment and organizational climate in light of the employee empowerment behaviour variable for a hospital. The general hospital of Kettar Algeria was selected during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The analysis uses data collected from the General Hospital in Algeria 2019-2020. The relationship between organizational climate and organizational commitment is verified in light of the employee behaviour variable, and the analysis was also done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, to test the existence of a strong relationship between the organizational climate and organizational commitment and employees’ perceptions of empowerment. Through regression analysis and correlation between variables and using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression analysis to test hypotheses. For data analysis in this study, we used PLS with smart PLS version 3.2.7 and version 20. With Smart PLS, two steps were implemented, namely, the scaling model and the structural model. Findings & Value added: The results of the analysis confirm that organizational commitment and organizational climate have a strong impact on the employee behaviour variable as well as other indicators within the organization under study. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, therefore, it is necessary to prepare policies that can enhance worker performance within the organization under study.

It is quite appalling that an oil rich environment is suffering from penury amidst abundance of wealth due to negligence. This research examined the contributions of Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Ltd towards human capacity development and healthcare delivery in Imo State oil bearing communities. The study anchored on Samuel Huntington’s modernization theory. This work adopted mixed research design. The population of the study was fifty thousand while two thousand five hundred sample size was selected. The study employed Questionnaire, observation, interview and documentary methods of data collection. Simple percentage, Kearl Pearson correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis were employed for data analysis. The study discovered that Addax Petroleum Development Nigeria Ltd has contributed significantly towards human capacity development but has not impacted positively on healthcare delivery in the study area. The study recommended that multinational companies operating in Imo State oil bearing communities should as a matter of urgent concern contribute or donate appreciable resources towards healthcare needs of their host communities, so as to cushion the negative impact of petroleum production in their environment. This can be achieved by devoting two percent of their annual profits generated from the study area to healthcare needs of the inhabitants.

Realizacja edukacji zdrowotnej w szkołach podstawowych i ponadpodstawowych z perspektywy doświadczeń i oceny studentów

Author(s): Karina Leksy,Agnieszka Skowrońska-Pućka,Joanna Nawój-Połoczańska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 72/2024

Health education is an essential component of health promotion, constituting a process through whichindividuals and communities learn to prioritize and maintain their own and others’ health. Further-more, it constitutes a pedagogical and didactic process conducted at all levels of education. It is un-fortunate that, given that health education is integrated into other teaching subjects in Poland, theremay be considerable doubt as to its reliable implementation and effectiveness. This article presentsthe findings of a study conducted among students regarding their experiences and perceptions of theimplementation of health education at the primary and secondary school levels. The findings of theresearch demonstrate that health education was implemented in only 30% of cases at both levels ofeducation. Furthermore, the content of these instances was limited to traditional topics related to a he-althy lifestyle, without consideration of the numerous other factors that contribute to human health.Consequently, there is a pressing need to introduce health education as a separate subject, taking intoaccount the socio-cultural and environmental contexts.

Equality of Rights and Accessibility Policy Interventions as Prevention of Sexual Violence against Persons with Disabilities: A Mixed Method Study

Author(s): Suardi SUARDI,- Nursalam,Hasruddin Nur / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2024

The primary issue in this study is the pervasive sexual abuse directed at students with disabilities at Indonesian colleges. This study aims to examine initiatives aimed at preventing sexual violence against students by evaluating Equality of rights and accessibility policies for individuals with disabilities in Indonesian universities. This research employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The research involved 30 informants selected through purposive sampling, comprising members of the Campus Honorary and Ethics Council, the Task Force Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PHSV), sociologists, legal experts, lecturers, and students. Additionally, 677 respondents were chosen using random sampling techniques for the research sample. The data collection methods include distributing questionnaires, conducting observations, performing interviews, and reviewing paperwork. The stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion are qualitative data analysis, whereas quantitative data analysis employed descriptive statistics utilizing JASP 0.19.0 software. The results of the study show that structural intervention through Equality of rights and accessibility policies for people with disabilities is an important thing to be done by university leaders, such as the provision of courses or seminars with a disability perspective, reporting services or channels, prevention guidelines, coordination mechanisms between units, socialization of anti-sexual violence, decent accommodation and sexual violence ambassadors. Intervention in the policy structure of Equality of rights and accessibility measures for individuals with impairments can mitigate sexual abuse against students with disabilities.

Financial Signaling and Stock Return Movements: New Evidences in Indonesian Stock Markets after Covid-19

Author(s): Mohammad Nofal,Djayani Nurdin,Lina Mahardiana,- Darman,Ramli Hatma / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2024

Economic and business uncertainty following Covid-19 resulted in more volatile returns in Indonesian stock market, a situation that requires investors to more carefully assess what financial signals drive returns. This allows them to select the right shares into their portfolio. To help investors overcome the problem, we specify a logit model that links stock returns with several financial signals including profitability, leverage, activity, market multiple and dividend policy, using data 661 non-financial firms listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The statistical results are compared with investor opinions obtained from a Focus Group Discussion. We found surprising facts in Indonesian equity market that signals observed in previous studies influence stock returns, most of them have insignificant coefficients in this study. However, there are three signals that significantly affect stock returns, consisting of two profitability signals, return on assets and earnings per-share, with a positive coefficient and one leverage signal, debt to equity, with a negative coefficient. we then examine our results deeply by considering firm size, shariah and industry classification, three characteristics of the Indonesian stock market. Size is important due to the strong effect of profitability on stock returns for large firms and that stock returns move in the opposite direction with leverage for small size firms, describing higher risks for small firms. Earning per-share is significant for sharia group data, reflecting sharia investors prefer real returns on their investments but tend to ignore debt. Finally, our results are not influenced by industry classification.
