Both the risk of suicidal and violent behaviours increases in alcohol and substance use disorders. Besides, it’s proposed that alcohol and substance use disorders significantly contribute to the increasing prevalence of suicide and violence worldwide. For these reasons, it is thought that the spiral of problems consisting of the concepts of suicide, violence, and addiction awaits a solution on a global scale. The discovery of the underlying neurobiological mechanisms is required to deal with these problems. Previous research has revealed the importance of neurobiological mechanisms in understanding suicidal, violent, and addictive behaviours. Especially recent studies have shown some evidence that these three conditions have some related genetic, epigenetic, and neurobiological bases. Therefore, besides the current neurobiological research on alcohol and substance use disorders, scientific literature related to suicidal and violent behaviours will be presented in this review altogether.

Theoretical background: Personal resources are one of the attributes that protect against the destructive consequences of experiencing a difficult situation and that figure in the overall assessment of life satisfaction. Aim: The aim of the study was to analyze whether the individual dimensions of attachment are related to the level of personal resources of people diagnosed with schizophrenia and their life satisfaction, and to identify mediators that determine the quality of these relationships. Study group: 50 people were tested. The average age of the respondents was 49 years. Method: The measurement of the variable attachment was made using Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised by Chris Fraley, Kelly Brennan and Neils Waller, in the Polish adaptation of Cezary Wiśniewski; the Life Satisfaction Scale by Zygfryd Juczyński was used to determine the variable satisfaction with life. The level of personal resources was measured using the Lifespan Individual Resilience Scale in the Polish adaptation of Alicja Malina, Julie Ann Pooley and Craig Harms. Results: The analyzes carried out in the course of the study confirmed the existence of significant relationships between the level of personal resources and life satisfaction. Research has also confirmed that there are significant links between attachment and life satisfaction, and between attachment and personal resources. It also turned out that the level of personal resources is an important mediator in the relation between avoidance and the level of life satisfaction in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. Conclusion: The level of personal resources and secure attachment correlate with a higher life satisfaction of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Duchowny w świetle księgi pokutnej z Paryża

Author(s): Marek Story / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

Penitential books which were written in Ireland but were shortly adopted by the whole of Europe are, along sacramentaries, a part of special laws and a means of getting to know the canon law, particularly the criminal law. Their aim was to help confessors unify the way in which penance was administered, as well as how the sacrament of penance and reconciliation was celebrated. The penitential book of Paris which is analyzed in this article, is assumed to have been created around 750 AD and was written on the basis of the oldest penitential book from France i.e. the penitential book of Burgundy (circa 700–725 AD). The article shows that confessors were to analyze the behavior of the penitent – in this case a bishop, priest or deacon – very carefully and responsibly, in order to ensure that they were not a reason of scandals among the faithful of whom they were to take care. Among inappropriate behaviors of the clergymen, the penitential book of Paris speaks in particular about matters related to the protection of the human life, the care of the Holy Sacrament, participation in hunting, overconsumption of alcohol or sexual abuse.

Alcohol consumption in the context of the covid-19 pandemic

Alcohol consumption in the context of the covid-19 pandemic

Author(s): Sebastian Fitzek / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

In this study I aimed to conduct a qualitative research on the influence of alcohol on domestic violence using hybrid questionnaires (online and F2F) on three distinct groups of alcohol consumers in Bucharest (medium, high and low). I used the online scientific platform "SurveyMonkey" for the questionnaire application and data collection. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, AUDIT-C model was used to assess alcohol consumption in the 2 months (October, November 2021) according to three key consumption indicators: frequency of alcohol consumption, alcohol level, average amount consumed per drink and frequency of excessive alcohol consumption Change in consumption was recorded analogously to AUDIT-C variables (frequency of alcohol consumption, amount of alcohol consumption and excessive alcohol consumption), whereby consumption indicators are related to the degree of change. So, is there a link between degree of consumption, frequency and domestic violence? The results, together with a range of psychiatric, psychoanalytic and psychological theories, provide a variety of explanations for the violent behavior perpetuated in family relationships, denouncing their impact and harmful effects on personality upbringing, psychological profiling, and especially on the belonging and role of the dysfunctional family.

Die Guttempler und ihr Wirken in Schäßburg zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts

Author(s): Nicolae Teșculă / Language(s): German Issue: _/2021

The family plays a very important role in a child's physical and mental development, and the whole system such as: family, schools, communities, governments, corporations must be aware, involved and committed to protect and improve children's health. The aim of this study is to examine the impact that divorced parents have on eating behavior and in this context we observed the eating attitudes of children with divorced parents. Forming and consolidating healthy eating habits from early ages must be a priority in the present context of continuous rising of obesity, diabetes, heart diseases etc. The implication of health professionals, other than doctors, namely social workers, psychologists is essential in teaching the general population scientific knowledge on the topics of healthy eating habits. We also investigated a specific situation: the attitude towards food of children and adolescents in the family context and the relationship between children's eating behavior and body self-esteem which can be a predictor of general self-esteem at children who are in specific situation, namely have divorced parents. For this purpose, we enrolled students from several schools in the Western part of Romania (N = 722; N (divorced parents = 106) aged 8-16 years. The results did not support that those children who have divorced parents also have a negative attitude towards food but a higher level of satisfaction in family life predicts healthier eating attitudes and also there are a significant statistic data that children eating attitude negatively correlates with body self-esteem. Based on the findings, nutrition education and healthy food environment knowledge, attitude and practice on nutrition, eating behaviors and physical activity among both students and parents should be known not just by medial doctors, but also by health professionals like social workers and health psychologists.

Eyes on the Screen: Video Game Pathological Usage Symptoms and Time Spent Playing

Author(s): Cosmin Ghețău / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

ideo games are widely considered an activity with possibly addictive consequences; as a result, behavioral addiction characteristics related to gaming are recognized in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Specific characteristics of Pathological Game Usage (PGU) still incite debate among researchers across a spectrum of domains. Time Spent Playing (TSP)is one of the most discussed elements in relation to Pathological Video-Game Use (PGU).The present study involving 140 respondents researched a possible relationship between the average time spent playing over two specific kinds of days. Statistically specific analyzes, such as correlations and regressions were performed between TSP (based on self-reported data addressing a specific kind of day: free day/ holiday and work/ school day) and PGU (based on the scale developed by Gentile, 2009). Results indicate positive correlations between symptoms/elements of PGU and TSP. Additionally, results indicated significantly higher scores on the PGU scale for males suggesting possible gender differences in the presence of problematic use characteristics.

DO MINORITIES SMOKE MORE? A COMPARISON OF SMOKING PREVALENCE AND OTHER SOCIO DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS BETWEEN ETHNIC ROMANIAN AND HUNGARIAN TEENAGERS IN ROMANIA

Author(s): Enikő Albert-Lőrincz,Béla Szabó,Edit Paulik,Ildikó Andrea Gáspárik / Language(s): English Issue: 16/2019

This study was designed to evaluate differences in smoking prevalence among the two ethnic groups living in common geographical settings in Romania and to identify other attributes associated with ethnicity, which may contribute to higher cigarette consumption among the Hungarian minority. Method: The randomized multistage stratified cluster sampling included 1249 adolescents from 36 schools and 72 classes in three Romanian districts. Self-administered questionnaires were used with 61 questions yielding 210 variables. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the association of smoking with ethnicity and other social parameters. Results: A regression model with four levels of input variables showed a high degree of multicollinearity with the following correlated predictors: Hungarian ethnicity (OR=1.71, p=0.017 on a first level), low school performance (OR=2.31, p=0.001) urban area, internet access and ethnicity on a second level. After adding a set of psycho-social parameters to the demographic variables, we also found predictive for smoking: superficial relationship with parents (OR=1.83, p=0.001), not enjoying school (OR=2.15, p=0.001), periods of depression (OR=1.83, p=0.005), internet access (OR=1.93, p= 0.005) and urban area (OR=1.49, p=0.054). Conclusion: This study documents an increased risk of smoking among Hungarian minority teens in Romania. Correlations between ethnicity and some social factors are also pronounced, but understanding the associations and testing their causality is needed to better address the problem. Results point out the importance of identifying specific causes and discovering the mechanism of the complex network of psychosocial influences.

The presence of alcohol use disorders over a three months period in a general psychiatric ward of “Alexandru Obregia” Clinical Hospital of Psychiatry”

The presence of alcohol use disorders over a three months period in a general psychiatric ward of “Alexandru Obregia” Clinical Hospital of Psychiatry”

Author(s): Maria Puiu,Gabriela Elena Chele,Sorin Riga,Mihnea Manea / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are associated with many co-morbidities, generating increased costs for healthcare systems worldwide. Part of these costs are due to hospital admissions necessary for treatment. Objectives: Our research aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of cases with AUDs as a primary or secondary diagnosis over a three-month period in a general psychiatric ward of the Clinical Psychiatric Hospital "Prof. Dr. Alexandru Obregia". Methods: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study. Only admissions of adult male patients with a primary or secondary diagnosis at discharge of AUDs were included. Data collected from the hospital's database included: age, gender, primary and secondary diagnoses at discharge, length of stay, type admission (voluntary/non-voluntary) and character of admissions (emergency or non-emergency), health insurance and employment status. Results: 99 admissions of male patients, with a primary or secondary diagnosis related to alcohol use were identified from a total of 252 admissions. The mean age ± SD of the patients was 48.04 (±11,93). AUDs were present in 8 (8.08%) cases as a primary diagnosis and in 91 (91.92%) as a secondary diagnosis. For the admissions in which AUDs were present as a secondary diagnosis, the most frequent primary diagnosis was represented by different types of ‘depressive disorders’ 44 (48.35%) and ‘personality disorders’ 19 (20.88%). Other important findings show a high percent of involuntary admission 45 (45.45%) and a low percent of patients with health insurance 44 (44.44%).Conclusions: Findings in our study show a high number of AUDs as a secondary diagnosis suggesting a need for further, more extensive research to provide a more accurate picture of the real prevalence and consequences of AUDs in Romanian psychiatric hospitals.

Mediul carceral. Evadarea din închisoare prin suicid. Sinteză de literatură

Author(s): Arpad Mathe / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

Suicide in prison is the result of a complex combination of different elements. The risk determinants of a convicted persons are translated into two parts, factors imported from their liberty or factors acquired in the penitentiary environment as a product of incarceration. The risk factors described are demographic, psychosocial, medical, and criminogenic. This paper makes a literature review dedicated to suicide actions in prison by exposing the risk factors that lead to this event, while making some concrete suggestions regarding the methods of prevention. The research also presents a report analysis made by the National Council of Europe, with other states, on suicide cases and deaths highlighted in Romanian penitentiaries. Method used, was to sort the literature based on the two elements, the risk factors identified prior to arrest and those during detention, analyzing the publications that contained terms with arguments and discussions on suicide riskfactors in prison. The most relevant conclusions appear at suicidal risk factors on a clinical background, criminogenic, and institutional background and at the opposite pole the environmental and educational factors that can hardly be improved. The study also discovers several pro-active strategies for suicide prevention in prison, evaluation during incarceration and during custody, shared accommodation, involvement of the support inmate and family, development of specific programs and other interventions in the work with the prisoner at risk of suicide.

FAITH, ANCHOR FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE ALCOHOLIC INDIVIDUALS’ ABSTINENCE?

FAITH, ANCHOR FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE ALCOHOLIC INDIVIDUALS’ ABSTINENCE?

Author(s): Iános-Mátyás-Tamás Mihók-Géczi / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2020

The excessive alcohol consumption has undesired consequences on the individuals, both physically and mentally, and mostly socially, leading to addiction. This study, based on the alcoholic addicts, abstinent persons (with and without relapse) and former abstinent individuals who have given up on their abstinence, has as a main purpose the identification of the faith’s importance in the abstinent life, in the success rate of these individuals’ abstinence. I have assumed the fact that faith (not religion) has a positive role during the rehabilitation. The analysis on the faith’s role has been done taking into consideration the number of relapses and the duration of the active abstinence. The batch was formed of 273 individuals, men aged between 26 and 80 (with an average of 47.88), from which 133 were abstinent alcoholics without any relapse history, 93 were abstinent alcoholics with at least one relapse, and 47 former alcoholics who have given up to their abstinence and who are now active consumers. The study is based on items of interest, presented in a sociological questionnaire designed for alcoholic persons. The results have indicated high marks of the averages, statistically significant, both on the item representing the help gained from faith in obtaining and keeping the abstinence, and on the „satisfied by my own spirituality” item, in the case of abstinent individuals, in comparison with the other two categories. In these two items, the abstinent ones with at least one relapse have also gained higher scores than those who have given up on their abstinence. Individuals with a continuous abstinence longer than five years have proved a deeper faith in comparison with those who had relapsed in the past, but the „satisfaction with their own spirituality” was apparently the same.

RAZLIKE U IZRAŽENOSTI POTENCIJALNO PROBLEMATIČNIH PODRUČJA UČENIKA (POSIT) U ODNOSU NA NJIHOVE SOCIO-DEMOGRAFSKE KARAKTERISTIKE

Author(s): Žana Vrućinić / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 8/2023

Children and the young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina constitute a vulnerable population, as they live with their parents, some of whom, having gone through a four-year war(1991-1995), suffer from untreated PTSD. Given that the mentioned circumstances make them susceptible to problems in numerous areas of psychosocial functioning, they need continuous monitoring in this context. In this regard, the aim of this study is to determine the differences in the expression of potentially problematic areas of adolescents measured by a questionnaire Problem-Oriented Screening Instrument for Teenagers (POSIT; Rahdert, 1991), with regard to gender, age, place of residence, number of children in the family and family structure, among students, in order to identify potential problems and prevent difficulties in psychosocial functioning in 10 areas: substance use/abuse, physical health, mental health, family relations, peer relations, educational status, vocational status, social skills, leisure/recreation, and aggressive behavior/delinquency. The sample in this research was convenient and consisted of 789 students, of which 471 were elementary school students and 318 were secondary school students from the Republic of Srpska. The research results show that there are statistically significant differences in functioning in the area that covers drug use/abuse, peer relations, professional status, mental health and leisure and recreation, with regard to the categorical independent variable gender. When it comes to the age, statistically significant differences were observed in following area of functioning: drug use/abuse, physical health, relationships with peers, professional status, and aggressive behavior and delinquency. Considering the independent categorical variable place of residence, statistically significant differences in the area of functioning of family relations were found. Respondents differ in the areas of functioning related to the physical and mental health, relationships with peers, social skills and education, considering the number of children in the family. The independent categorical variable family structure divides respondents according to functioning in the following areas: physical health, relationships with peers, and aggressive and delinquent behavior. The paper discusses the theoretical and practical implications of these findings.

SVUGDJE, SVE I SVATKO U PREVENCIJI OVISNOSTI

Author(s): Boris Gracin,Danica Romac,Zrinka Ćavar / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 8/2023

Drug use is highly prevalent in the European Union, about 83.4 million (29%) people used drugs in the last year, of which more men (50.5 million) and mostly cannabis (about 22 m.) and psychostimulants ( about 8.1 m., of which 3.5 m. cocaine, 2.6 m. MDMA – a and 2 m. amphetamine).Considering the complexity and spread of addiction problems as well as the mobility of the population within the EU, it is important to monitor health indicators and compare countries with the aim of better understanding the dynamics of drug use and the most effective measures to reduce harmful consequences what affect all segments of society. Objective and methods: To assess the risk of new challenges in the field of addiction by comparing the health indicators of the Mental Health and Addiction Prevention Department of the Andrija Štampar Teaching Public Health Institute and data for EU countries for the 2022.Results: We observe a light decrease in the total number of people in treatment with the largest share opiates, with a decrease in the number of new and stable number of previously treated, who are getting older (70% aged 45-54) and illness (50% mental/somatic comorbidity), which is similar to EU countries. Considering the indicators of recovery, we note good retention, a stable low incidence of HCV and HIV, as well as employment, which is different compared to EU countries. In EU countries and in Zagreb, research indicates an increase in the use of cannabinoids and psychostimulants, which is accompanied by an treatment demand increase due to psychostimulants, but not cannabinoids. We notice that the institutions refer people to treatment less often since the pandemic. Conclusion: The pandemic has changed the lifestyle, but also the pattern of drug use. Despite the indicators of higher use, we are currently facing a treatment demands decline. The effective response to the challenges includes enhanced prevention at all levels and all institutions with strengthening intersectoral and interstate cooperation.
