Croatian Youth and Populism: A Mixed Methods Analysis of the Populism “Breeding Ground” among the Youth in the City of Zagreb

Croatian Youth and Populism: A Mixed Methods Analysis of the Populism “Breeding Ground” among the Youth in the City of Zagreb

Author(s): Augustin Derado,Vanja Međugorac,Vanja Dergić / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

A number of recent international studies have reported the growing electoral success of populist parties among younger age groups. In this study, authors analysed the “breeding ground” for populism among the youth in Zagreb using the results of the Memory, Youth, Political Legacy and Civic Engagement (MYPLACE) project in Croatia. A mixed methods approach was employed with thematic analysis of 61 semi-structured interviews and regression analysis on a survey sample data of 1,216 young people aged 16–25. Qualitative analysis indicated analogies to Cas Mudde’s three core concepts of populism (the “good people”, the “bad elite” and the “general will”) among interviewees’ opinions. In addition, common ideological features of populism (nationalism and radical egalitarianism) were to a degree present among the interviewees’ attitudes. In the quantitative part of this paper, the authors narrowed the analysis of populism to the radical right variant of populism, and – given the lack of prominent populist actors in Croatia – to support of ideas rather than political parties. The attitude towards a political system with a strong leader not constrained by parliament was chosen as the outcome since it holds significant populist potential in contemporary democracies. Analyses showed the connection of the anti-elite, anti-systemic attitudes – as well as authoritarianism and a few right-wing political attitudes –with the strong leader preference. Both qualitative and quantitative results of this study indicated that the “breeding ground” for populism exists among the youth in Zagreb. Additional research is required to further examine that complex and previously unexplored topic.

Taki mały, taki duży może świętym być. Proces mitologizacji Todora Tose Proeskiego w macedońskiej kulturze popularnej

Taki mały, taki duży może świętym być. Proces mitologizacji Todora Tose Proeskiego w macedońskiej kulturze popularnej

Author(s): Piotr Majewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 04/2012

In this article, I analyzed the discourses devoted to the Macedonian national hero, Todor "Toše" Proeski. This twenty-six-year-old singer and star of the Macedonian pop scene with the day of his death became the greatest national good of the Macedonians. The social image of Proeski is constructed at every level of public discourse (from popular culture to high culture) and by almost all its participants, both those privileged (clerics, journalists, intellectuals and politicians), as well as "ordinary" citizens. In the methodological concept used by me, Proeska was treated as an example of the "emblem of nationality", in other words as „national form of representation". These "emblems" or "forms" allow individuals and groups to identify with the "imagined community" and legitimize the concept of the nation.

Национални и политички идентитет у контексту медијске одговорности

Национални и политички идентитет у контексту медијске одговорности

Author(s): Đorđe Vuković,Aleksandar Vranješ / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2011

The crisis of identity is the underlying hallmark of the contemporary era. It is not confined to the question of the individual but also applies to a more politically serious problem. After the breakup of Yugoslavia and the interethnic and civil war, the newly established political entities were faced with ongoing and parallel processes of reverting to the form of collective identity as well as the formulating new facets of national and political identities. These aspects denote an intentionally conceived selfdetermination in the face of impending challenges. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the role of mass media in terms of identifycation and self-identification of people, social groups, political communities, and the promotion of political values and goals as well as the encouragement of behavioral patterns concerning mediated political initiateves

Whaddya rebellin’ against? Youth Rebellion and Domesticity in The Wild One and Rebel Without a Cause

Whaddya rebellin’ against? Youth Rebellion and Domesticity in The Wild One and Rebel Without a Cause

Author(s): Mirosław Aleksander Miernik / Language(s): English Issue: 04/2018

The article focuses on the conflict between youth and domestic values in 1950s America on the example of the movies The Wild One and Rebel Without a Cause. Using elements of subcultural studies, the films are discussed as didactic in purpose, conveying a sense of fear of youth culture, then a new development, and reinforcing the patriarchal structure of mid-20th century US society. This was achieved by depicting troubled young people who manage to overcome various difficulties with the help of a strong masculine father-figure. However, as a result of this, some young people sought for characters who in their opinions embodied a non-conformist stance to a much greater extent than the protagonists. These characters, Chino in The Wild One and Plato in Rebel Without a Cause, became subcultural icons in their own right, and illustrate the impact that such cinematic portrayals may have on the development of a subculture.

Andrzej Towiański, czyli prorok elektryczny. Medialność mesjanizmu w kontekście kultury celebryckiej

Andrzej Towiański, czyli prorok elektryczny. Medialność mesjanizmu w kontekście kultury celebryckiej

Author(s): Piotr Urbanowicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2019

In the paper the author presents Andrzej Towiański - an influential Polish messianist who established the Circle of God's Cause in Paris in 1840s – in relation to celebrity culture. Basing on theories of Chris Rojek, David Marshall and Birgit Meyer the author claims that the figure of a celebrity is deeply integrated into media. On the one hand the celebrity functions as a node in media network providing tools to integrate mass audience; on the other he is an actor, who sets complex aesthetic relations and thus establishes a community. In case of Andrzej Towiański and his disciples such aesthetic relations were formed via metaphors translating electricity into domain of religious exaltation. In conclusion, the author states that the references to electric science were the main reason for popularity of Andrzej Towiański and his efficacy in forming community.

Author(s): Anna Michalik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2019

This paper is an attempt to trace how Szczepan Twardoch, one of the most popular contemporary Polish writers, has become a celebrity. The author's actions will be analyzed in context of how he professionalizes his image and to build s popularity, which results in calling the writer a celebrity. In addition, the hypothesis of this text is the statement, that Szczepan Twardoch's attitude is not limited solely to the role of a celebrity-writer. It is much wider, and owing to his conscious activities in the field of building and managing his own image, this creator deserves to be called an ‘influencer’– who introduces changes in the writer's ethos, followed by the entire industry.

Drzwi otwarte i życiowa szansa: kreowanie gastrocelebrytów w programie MasterChief Polska

Author(s): Agata Bachórz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2019

The paper focuses on celebrity chefs in Poland as a relatively new phenomenon. In the first part of the paper a synthetic review of the discussion about celebrity chefs in global foodscapes is given. In the second part an analysis of Polish version of cookery show MasterChef is presented. The program is interpreted as a carrier for the meanings about the formation of a new gastronomic field in Poland with celebrities of different scale as key actors. The show’s imitative character as well as its detachment from rather conservative eating habits of the majority of Poles is underlined. Polish MasterChef presents culinary capital as seemingly accessible to everyone, recruits smaller-scale food celebrities and stimulates a development of a new food culture connected to a global gastronomic field. This process is a part of larger lifestyle modernization in Poland: the show positively interprets biographical and cultural change, defines the relationship between passion and work, and promotes the specific idea of life success.

Shimei-ryo i czułość za pieniądze. Czy można to wykorzystać w grach? Potencjał dla gier?

Shimei-ryo i czułość za pieniądze. Czy można to wykorzystać w grach? Potencjał dla gier?

Author(s): Katarzyna Skok / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2019

Shimei-ryo is a paid service offering a choice to pick a girl to sleep with (it is about sleeping side by side, not a sexual activity). In the current work the term is referred to a paradox in which (1) non-sexual behavior related to physical intimacy between two or more people is present and (2) means leading to this behavior (paying) exclude authentic intimacy. The present article is an attempt to interpret the phenomenon. In the first part shimei-ryo is analyzed in the context of ludus. Customer motivations and psychological aspects of snuggling are discussed. The second part includes a discussion on the possible application of the phenomenon in the Western culture and the use of mechanisms underlying it in games. It is proposed that - apart from traditional gaming elements – the human ability of multisensory integration and symbolic forms of care (non-verbal behavior or the „carefully” programmed chatterbots) are used.
