Author(s): Vladimir Vasilievich Yakovlev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 8/2022

The article reflects on the need to use Russian chronicles for the study of the epoch of Peter the Great. As an example of such usage it deals with the data provided by the eighteenth-century Russian chronicles, such as The Dvina Chronicler, The Chronicle of Lev Vologdin, The Vologda Chronicle and The Chronicler of the Solovetsky Monastery, telling about Peter the Great’s visit to the Solovetsky Monastery in 1694. Particular attention is paid to an unpublished and little-known account of the Petrine epoch – the Special Issue of Chronograph studied by the author of the article. The paper substantiates the need for further inquiry and research on currently unknown accounts on this topic in archives and manuscript collections with the purpose to introduce them into scholraly circulation. This task seems to be especially relevant because even in modern works this event is often addressed based not on historical sources, but on retelling the works of the nineteenth-century researchers or popular writings of that time. Even such an outstanding historian as S. M. Solovyov in his History of Russia mentions this event only briefly and does not refer to any sources.

Çift Dillilik Bağlamında Suriyeli Mülteci Öğrenciler ve Kilis Ġli Örneği

Author(s): Hüseyin DOĞRAMACIOĞLU / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2022

Kilis is a frontier city with a history dating back thousands of years and located at the junction of different cultural and demographic structures. This city has a rich cultural structure as it is located at the intersection of various cultures. However, in the last ten years, different cultures and generations have begun to be seen here, as refugees who have escaped from the turmoil in Syria and sought refuge in our country have settled in Kilis. Refugees who immigrated to Kilis and whose mother tongue is mostly Arabic, interacted with Kilis culture when they encountered it. This interaction emerged mostly on the basis of language. After these people settled in Kilis, the children born here were educated at schools as bilingual students who could speak both Turkish and Arabic fluently. While these students were given education in different places at first, they continued to study in the same classes with the Turkish population in recent years. Thus, it was observed that cultural interaction accelerated and bilingual individuals increased. This generation can be characterized as individuals who both know and live the Turkish language and culture, know the Arab civilization and know Arabic very well because it is their mother tongue.

Etnik Turizm: Kültürlerarası Hiyerarşinin İkame Edilmesi

Etnik Turizm: Kültürlerarası Hiyerarşinin İkame Edilmesi

Author(s): Hasan Münüsoğlu / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 111/2022

Tourism is one of the routine activities of the consumption society with various subfields based on tourists’ interests such as environmental tourism, dark tourism, medical tourism, cultural tourism, etc. One of those subfields is ethnic tourism. Ethnic tourism is considered as a search for “tradition” and “authenticity” of people living in a“modern”life. Therefore, the interest in minority groups, which stand apart from the global dominant culture, tends to increase. Ethnic tourism, which is represented as an intellectual mobility toward gaining knowledge and raising awareness for cultural diversity, is the result of both cultural and social stratification and its reproduction. While the touristic projectile moves from “modern” to “traditional” and maybe even “primitive”, its participants belong to upper classes. Although indigenous people appear to be shareholders of this tourism activity, technically both these people and their culture are objectified and commodified. While claiming that ethnic tourism aids in the development of intercultural relations, it sharpens cultural borders by marginalizing diversities. For example, the level and scope of communication among tourists and indigenous people are determined by tour organizers and tourists. Tourists feel free to take pictures, to enter holy places or attend some practices. For this reason, there are warning signs regarding inappropriate behaviors for tourists in some touristic villages. This suggests that the position of indigenous people has become passive in tourism regardless if their villages are visited. This study shows how ethnic tourism creates inequality in the case of the Dukha in Mongolia, the Kalasa in Pakistan, and the Kayan people in Thailand and compares them to similar cases in Turkey, especially in non-Muslim communities. Despite having different cultural, historical, and social backgrounds, the issue that makes all these cases common is their position in this aspect of tourism. This article, therefore, discusses the reconstruction of a cultural hierarchy and the commodification of local cultures via ethnic tourism with examples and practices.

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN THE IMPACT OF LEADER-MEMBER EXCHANGE QUALITY ON JOB EMBEDDEDNESS AND TURNOVER INTENTION

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN THE IMPACT OF LEADER-MEMBER EXCHANGE QUALITY ON JOB EMBEDDEDNESS AND TURNOVER INTENTION

Author(s): Triyono Arief WAHYUDI,Hendryadi Hendryadi,Donant Alananto Iskandar,Suryani Suryani,Deni GUSTIAWAN / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This study aims to explore the gender differences in the relationships between leader-member exchange (LMX), job embeddedness, and turnover intention. Hypotheses formulation was conducted by integrating conservation of resources (COR) theory and social role theory, and data were collected from 462 respondents who were employed in various sectors in Indonesia. Data analyses included confirmatory factor analysis to evaluate the measurement model, followed by mediation-moderation analysis by using the PROCESS macro. As hypothesized, LMX showed a positive impact on job embeddedness and a negative impact on turnover intention. Job embeddedness was negatively associated with turnover intention, partially mediating the relationship between LMX quality and turnover intention. This study showed that gender moderated the relationships between LMX, job embeddedness, and turnover intention; this was particularly evident in the female participants. This study contributes to the literature on the significance of LMX quality and job embeddedness by exploring gender-specific roles, thus strengthening the existing knowledge base.

Author(s): Eren Temel,Ece Armağan / Language(s): English Issue: 12/2022

In this research, it is aimed to examine the relationships between virtual store atmosphere, sales promotions, flow experience, and impulsive purchasing within the framework of the S-O-R paradigm. Virtual store atmosphere and sales promotions are considered external stimuli, flow experience as an organism, and impulsive purchasing as a consumer reaction. The theoretical model was evaluated within the framework of the answers of 407 consumers accessed via an online survey. The results obtained revealed that there were statistically significant relationships between all variables discussed. Flow experience has a mediating role both between virtual store atmosphere-impulsive buying, and sales promotions-impulsive buying. It has been observed that in online shopping, consumers can experience flow with the effect of virtual store atmosphere and sales promotions, and this can result in impulsive buying. It is thought that these findings will contribute to the marketing literature and practice.

Lay beliefs about fatalism: Development of a General Fatalism Scale (GFAT)

Lay beliefs about fatalism: Development of a General Fatalism Scale (GFAT)

Author(s): Canay Doğulu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The growing body of research on the role of fatalism on the psychology of various health-related behaviors has witnessed various conceptualization and assessment efforts. The importance of the topic for its implications for behavioral change necessitates the need for better conceptualization and measurement of fatalism. The present study aimed to develop a reliable and valid self-report measure in Turkish for assessing lay beliefs about general fatalism (GFAT) in a predominantly Muslim and collectivistic culture. To this end, a scale development study was conducted 361 adult participants (Mage = 32.49, SDage = 12.97) recruited via snowball sampling in social media platforms. The exploratory factor analyses conducted on the 62 GFAT items revealed a seven-factor structure with 58 items, explaining 59.89% of the total variance. The obtained multi-dimensional factor structure was represented with destiny, functionality, helplessness, uncontrollability, valuation, luck, and submission subscales. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the GFAT subscales ranged between .74 and .95, demonstrating the internal consistency of the scale. The meaningful and significant correlations of the subscales with external control orientation, just world belief, and religiosity measures evidenced the construct validity of the scale. Overall, findings demonstrate that the GFAT Scale is a reliable and valid self-report measure for assessing individual differences in lay beliefs about fatalism. The developed scale can be used to measure the multifaceted construct of fatalism in future studies aimed at understanding its influence on the psychology of behavioral change, with implications for increasing the functioning of individuals and communities with respect to social and practical problems.

Psihopatija i moć: implikacije za socijalni život

Author(s): Alisabri Šabani / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 3-4/2022

The paper analyzes the relationship between psychopathy and public power. The focus is on the fact that in public space it is possible to observe certain psychopathological characteristics of persons performing public functions. In this sense, the psychopathological characteristics of persons who construct public space are stated, ie their characteristics are radicalized in the context of power. In this sense, we have listed the key features of psychopathy and power structures that are abused by psychopaths in power. The result is a society that cannot make quality changes and is brought into a state of powerlessness known as collective abdication. We found a strong foothold for these reflections in the work of A.M. Lobaczewski, and we also mentioned T. Clark as the author who forms a sociology of evil. The triad of psychopathy-power-evil is an active reality in a society like ours.

The Brutal Face of the Violent Game of the Capitalist Competition: Squid Game

The Brutal Face of the Violent Game of the Capitalist Competition: Squid Game

Author(s): Yavuz Akyıldız,Elif Şeşen / Language(s): English Issue: 14/2022

Globalization, which has gained momentum since the 1970s, is effective in almost every field, but its prominent dimension is economically based and it leads to increasing inequalities throughout the world. This inequality feeds an environment in which uncertainty, competition, risk and anxiety are intense in social life. The sense of weakness and defeat that people feel more and more, makes it easier for them to accept harsher and ruthless competition conditions and deepens the moral contradictions of modern man, who can risk everything for self-interest. Capitalist relations of production, where success is measured by money and where cooperation is replaced by competition, turns a large mass of people who fail in this game into a useless and unnecessary waste. In this study, the Squid Game series is analyzed through the concepts of capitalism, competition and game. The series, which describe people involved in a life-or-death game to solve their financial problems, shows the brutality of the competitive capitalist system in general. The study, in which the series is analyzed with descriptive analysis within the frame of the defined concepts, reveals the destruction of the exploitative system of today’s modern society on people.

Throughout the historical process, the woman faced with the problematique of existing in society with her body rather than her personal traits. While the clothing fashion guided woman through this problematique, with an implicit oppression, it created an image that requires changes in woman’s body in terms of figure. By nature, fashion has been a part of a movement that prioritises constant innovation and change, and it has turned the woman into the permanent representative of this process with the body images that ensure the continuity of consumption. Thus, the content of this research became the ideal silhouettes for female body; the historical process regarded as the beginning of the system was analysed briefly and it was aimed to study the codes that formed based on the contemporary clothing fashion. This study was prepared with qualitative methods and body image was analysed with descriptive and analytical approaches. Body image-oriented policies -formed by social dynamics and practices in terms of fashion- formed the conceptual basis of the study and the prominent female silhouettes in clothing fashion were analysed with visuals. In the light of this study, it was seen that while the regarded-as-classic female silhouettes of the fashion were shaped with the codes and the oppressive nature of the traditional society, modern female silhouettes are shaped by being coded with ideal sizes projected by both the social values and the consumption culture.

Nowadays, when screen use is widespread among children and adolescents, mothers and fathers need more accurate information to understand their children's behaviors, support them and increase their functionality. Because of the limitations of measurement tools, there are limited number of studies examining parents' approaches to screen use in the Turkish sample. In this study, it is aimed to adapt the scale developed by Van den Bulk and Van den Bergh (2000) to our culture, and to conduct validity and reliability studies. The study consists of two stages. The sample of the first study consisted of 443 secondary school, high school and university students. While 284 (64.1%) of the sample were female and 157 (35.4%) were male, 2 (0.5%) participants did not specify their gender. The mean age of the sample was 17.59 (SD=3.07). The sample of the second study consists of 1122 secondary school, high school and university students. This sample includes 630 (56.1%) women and 492 (43.9%) participants. The mean age of the sample was 16.22 (SD=3.02). Demographic Information Form, Parenting Approaches to Screen Usage Scale, Parent and Adolescent Relationship Inventory (ParQ) and Psychological Control Scale were used for data collection. Exploratory factor analyzes, correlation analyzes and confirmatory factor analyzes were performed in order to determine the factor structure of the Scale of Mother and Fatherhood Approaches to Screen Use. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the 19-item mother form of the scale included a 4-factor structure and explained 54.42% of the total variance. It was revealed that the 20-item father form also contained a 4-factor structure and explained 66.83% of the total variance. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was found to be .85 for the mother form and .90 for the father form. To result, it has been shown that the Scale of Mother and Fatherhood Approaches to Screen Use has valid psychometric properties for the sample of our country. Moreover, it was revealed that there are significant relationships between parenting approaches and both parental coalition and perceived psychological control from mother and father.

KULTURALNA VIŠEZNAČNOST

KULTURALNA VIŠEZNAČNOST

Author(s): Thomas Bauer,Meliha Hrustić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1-2/2021

Until now, the term ambiguity has been used above all in the science of language. In most cases where people are confronted with ambiguity, however, language is only one of many elements. Finally, there are situations of ambiguity that survive entirely without language, as we saw in the introduction with the example of the real and alleged prayer of Benedict XVI in the Blue Mosque. Therefore, it makes sense to extend the concept of ambiguity to all cases in which people create ambiguity and encounter it, regardless of whether it happens through language or some other communicative act. That's why I'm talking about cultural ambiguity, which includes language, but also includes non-linguistic actions. However, if we extend the concept of ambiguity beyond linguistic actions, then we must also define the concept of meaning that is associated with that action a little more broadly. Linguistic ambiguity is based on the fact that one (or more) propositional contents can be assigned to one utterance. The word "treffen" in the Schützengilde slogan quoted above: "to shoot" and "meet friends" can be expressed in English to meet or to hit.

Author(s): Zhanna Zakharivna Denysіyuk / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 41/2022

The purpose of the work: to investigate the phenomenon of vyshyvanka as an object of a Ukrainian-centric narrative in the modern information space, which accumulates ethno-cultural values, serving as a means of nationalcultural identity. The research methodology is based on the application of a systemic approach, an analytical method, cultural, art history, semiotic and axiological, which will allow a comprehensive consideration of the given problem and formulate well-founded conclusions. The scientific novelty is characterized by the fact that for the first time embroidery as an element of folk and modern culture was investigated as an object that embodies ethno-cultural values and serves as a means of national-cultural identity, capable of forming a Ukrainian-centric narrative in the information space in the conditions of information confrontation. Using the example of modern embroidery of the Ukrainian brand "Ethnodim", it is demonstrated how an embroidered shirt acquires a new symbolic meaning, being consonant with important social events, representing the values of courage and heroism of Ukrainian defenders of the Ukrainian people in the fight against the enemy. Conclusions. Summarizing, we should note that vyshyvanka, as a component of Ukrainian national clothing and a part of traditional ethnoculture, is one of the greatest representatives of cultural traditions and values. In the modern information space, it has become a marker of national and cultural identity, a fashionable brand and a means of individual self-expression. Embodying national cultural values, the embroidered shirt acquired a special symbolic role, becoming an integral part of the social, political and cultural life of modern society, actualizing national culture. Vyshyvanka serves as a means of forming a Ukrainian-centric narrative in the information space, broadcasting to the general public the values and meanings of the Ukrainian worldview. In the conditions of armed aggression against Ukraine, modern designs of embroidered shirts acquired a new symbolism of the fight against the enemy, reflecting the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people.

Author(s): Miralem Dautović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 21/2022

The article discusses the implications, potential, and ways of using online media in the context of television journalism. Watching TV together is moving to social networks. Relying on the concept of social television viewing, the paper tried to study how television station editors use social networks, as well as to what extent social networks use television as a source of content. These questions were investigated empirically using the method of content analysis on a sample of 10 BH. television stations. The results point to three areas: 1. watching television on social networks as a social activity (Social TV), 2. television as a resource and source of content for social networks, and 3. social networks as a new television platform. The article provides a contribution to a poorly studied area in studies of the adaptation of television to the contemporary convergent environment.
