Summary/Abstract: The article reflects on the need to use Russian chronicles for the study of the epoch of Peter the Great. As an example of such usage it deals with the data provided by the eighteenth-century Russian chronicles, such as The Dvina Chronicler, The Chronicle of Lev Vologdin, The Vologda Chronicle and The Chronicler of the Solovetsky Monastery, telling about Peter the Great’s visit to the Solovetsky Monastery in 1694. Particular attention is paid to an unpublished and little-known account of the Petrine epoch – the Special Issue of Chronograph studied by the author of the article. The paper substantiates the need for further inquiry and research on currently unknown accounts on this topic in archives and manuscript collections with the purpose to introduce them into scholraly circulation. This task seems to be especially relevant because even in modern works this event is often addressed based not on historical sources, but on retelling the works of the nineteenth-century researchers or popular writings of that time. Even such an outstanding historian as S. M. Solovyov in his History of Russia mentions this event only briefly and does not refer to any sources.
