The aim of the study was to check whether there is a relationship between the sense of meaning in life and the level of depression felt by people participating in closed forums on Facebook`s about depression, and to determine whether there are diff erences in the sense of meaning in life and the level of depression felt due to having a social network. support. This goal was achieved by conducting research using the KPD and KPŻ questionnaires. The analysis of the obtained research results indicates an existing relationship between the sense of meaning in life and the level of depression felt by people participating in closed Facebook forums about depression. People who do not have a clearly defi ned goal, do not understand their place in the world and consider their lives monotonous are more likely to experience depressive symptoms. This relationship also works in the opposite direction - the severity of depressive symptoms reduces the sense of meaning in one’s existence. The results of the analyzes allowed for the verifi cation and confi rmation of the main hypotheses. Not all detailed hypotheses were confi rmed due to the lack of statistically signifi cant relationships between the variables.

Взаимовръзка между стил на привързаност и типичните начини на реагиране в конфликтна ситуация

Взаимовръзка между стил на привързаност и типичните начини на реагиране в конфликтна ситуация

Author(s): Filipa Velkova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2024

In recent decades, the influence of individual attachment styles on the dynamics of interpersonal relationships has received increasing attention in the psychological literature. A number of researchers have suggested that attachment in adults is directly related to the behavioral patterns they use in conflict situations in close relationships. This study examines the relationship between attachment style and typical responses in a conflict situation by having respondents complete the Experiences in Close Relationships revised – ECR-R and Thomas-Killman Conflict Mode Instrument – TKI. Based on the Stewart's t-test conducted, we can assume that it is typical for securely attached individuals to respond to a conflict situation primarily by seeking compromise, cooperating, and accommodating. It also seems to be characteristic of insecure-anxious individuals to cooperate, whereas insecure-avoidant individuals tend to flee. Adaptation as a way of responding to a conflict situation is most strongly associated with the insecure-anxious attachment style. Based on the findings, possible future research work is discussed.

An explorative study in to the role of personality traits and stressful life events in acute and transient psychotic disorders

An explorative study in to the role of personality traits and stressful life events in acute and transient psychotic disorders

Author(s): Poulose Merin,Antony JT,K. Praveenlal / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2018

Though there were several descriptions of ‘Third Psychosis’ from across the world, Acute and Transient Psychotic Disorder(ATPD) is a new entity in ICD, first introduced in 1992. Some researchers points out that vulnerable personality makes a person prone to psychotic breakdown when challenged with stressful life situation4−9 Though ICD 10 considers the traditional association of ATPD with stress and provide it as one among 3 key features, it also states that ATPD can occur without stress. Though ‘vulnerable personality’ is a common notion, there is no mention about personality in ICD 10 F23. Hence this study which aims at whether stress need to be always associated with ATPD as a preceding factor and whether personality traits of ATPD patients differ significantly from age and gender matched controls.

Author(s): Artemisi Shehu Dono,Arjana Muçaj / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Chronic illnesses are defined as physical or mental conditions that affect the functioning of individuals for a period of time longer than three months a year or individuals hospitalized for longer than a month. This study’s aim is to provide a scientific contribution to understanding the symptoms of anxiety and depression in children with chronic illnesses. Emotional problems are closely related to chronic illness. The participants of this quantitative study are 32 pediatric patients ranging from ages 6-13 years old, 28 of who were taken from QSUT and the other 4 from Pogradec Hospital Center. Anxiety was identified by the Children’s Anxiety Inventory (STAI-CH), while depression was identified by the Patient Questionnaire (PhQ-9). The results obtained from the SPSS statistical analysis did not support the first hypothesis of the study regarding the relationship between chronic illness and anxiety. Likewise, the second hypothesis of the study regarding the relationship between chronic illness and depression was also not supported. However, the third hypothesis of the study was supported, stating that the hospitalized children exhibit higher levels of anxiety and depression than those in the outpatient clinic. This study, contrary to the other studies, did not find a significant relationship between anxiety, depression and chronic illness, but brought other important results to be applied in future studies.

Alzheimer Hastası Bakım Vereninde Kişilerarası Psikoterapi Yaklaşımı: Olgu

Alzheimer Hastası Bakım Vereninde Kişilerarası Psikoterapi Yaklaşımı: Olgu

Author(s): İdil Rasan Doğan / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 33/2024

Alzheimer's Disease, which is turning into a public health problem in elderly societies, is characterized by significant deterioration in cognitive as well as behavioral processes, and is defined as a neurodegenerative disease, has a challenging process, especially for caregivers. The caregiver, who is seen as the main decision-maker in the disease, may experience problems with both the patient and the environment due to the burden of care, lack of knowledge about the disease, and the weakness of support networks. While the caregiver tries to manage the disease process, they also face loss and mourning. For this reason, especially the difficulty in accepting and adapting to changing roles brings about conflicts in relationships with the patient and others. At this point where support mechanisms gain importance, the Interpersonal Based Psychotherapy (IPT) Approach, which will be put into practice constructively, has a positive impact on caregiver relationships and makes the process bearable by reflecting positively on the prognosis of the disease. IPT is a psychotherapeutic approach used on many interpersonal problems and psychiatric syndromes, and works on the areas of interpersonal conflict, grief and loss, and role reversal. This case study aimed to evaluate the IPT Approach for D., who was caring for his father with Alzheimer's Disease. It has been seen that the approach plays an effective role when the caregiver's relationship with the patient and others is evaluated. Observed in literature studies is that positive interventions for caregivers have positive effects on both the patient and the caregiver. Olgu D., who experienced conflict in her relationships due to the weight of the burden of care and existing life responsibilities, along with the diagnosis of her father's illness, gained accurate information about the disease. At the same time with the therapeutic approach, the insight gained as a result of strengthening the support mechanisms, explaining the situation and the need for help, and the positive structuring of the social support network were achieved.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinde Çocukluk Çağı Travmasının Depresif Belirtiler ile Öz-Şefkat İlişkisinin İncelenmesi

Author(s): Piroz Sayin,Meryem Karaaziz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 34/2024

This study aims to examine the relationship between childhood traumas and depression symptoms and self-compassion among university students. It is a quantitative study using the correlational survey model. The population of the study consists of 387 individuals aged 18 and over living in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and this sample was selected using convenience sampling method. Socio-demographic Information Form, Self-Compassion Scale, Childhood Traumas Scale and Beck Depression Inventory were used as data collection tools. The findings show that there is a positive and significant relationship between the levels of childhood traumas and depression symptoms. When the sub-dimensions were analyzed, positive and significant relationships were also found between the levels of emotional and physical abuse and neglect and depression symptoms. As the levels of childhood traumas increased, the severity of depression symptoms also increased. In addition, a negative and significant relationship was found between the levels of childhood traumas and self-compassion levels; as the levels of trauma increase, self-compassion levels decrease. In the light of these findings, clinicians should be aware that childhood traumas may increase the risk of depression and should address this issue with their patients. Early intervention and support are vital for traumatized children. In addition to treating depression, clinicians should develop treatment plans to increase their patients' levels of self-compassion. A holistic approach will support patients' emotional well-being and help them discover their inner resources.

Çocukluk Çağı Travmaları Ve Ebeveyn Tutumlarının Yetişkin Bireylerdeki Kriminal Düşünceler İle İlişkisinin İncelenmesi

Author(s): Ezgi Doğan Dönmez,Meryem Karaaziz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 34/2024

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship of childhood traumas and parental attitudes with criminal thinking in adult individuals. The study group of the research consists of a total of 386 participants, 196 women and 190 men, who reside within the borders of TRNC and the Republic of Türkiye, are 18 years of age and over, and whose parents were alive until adulthood. In the study, the correlation method was used to examine the relationship between variables. In the research, a sample was selected from the population using the convenience sampling method. Sociodemographic Information Form, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), s-EMBU-C and Criminal Thinking Scales (CTS) were used as data collection tools in the study. Data was collected online via Google Forms. In this study, where the relationship between childhood traumas, parental attitudes, sociodemographic characteristics and criminal thinking was evaluated, significant relationships were found between childhood traumas and criminal thinking scales, and between perceived parental attitudes and criminal thinking scales. Additionally, in the analysis comparing the three scales, it was seen that parental attitudes did not predict criminal thinking, while childhood traumas predicted criminal thinking and engaged a full mediator role in the relationship between perceived parental attitudes and criminal thinking. In line with these results, it would be beneficial for public health to conduct studies on children exposed to trauma and/or growing up with negative parental attitudes.

Agorafobiye Eşlik Eden Panik Bozuklukta Bilişsel Davranışçı Terapi: Olgu Sunumu

Author(s): Onur Ortaç,Meryem Karaaziz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 35/2024

This study was conducted using DSM-IV and DSM-V criteria for agoraphobia and panic disorder. The client was a 20-year-old woman. Cognitive behavioural therapy was used in the interviews. The client, who was locked in the ward as a result of falling asleep in the ward in the first school, started to fear of not being able to stay in closed areas and not being able to walk alone in open areas. Upon this, he was taken to a psychologist by his family and although these problems were overcome to some extent, they were triggered again when he saw that his uncle locked his cousin in the room to punish him at the dinner they went to his uncle's family. The client applied to the therapy by saying that he could not stay in closed areas again, his heart beat rapidly when he entered those areas, numbness in his hands and feet, and he felt like he was going to die. The client was first introduced to the cognitive behavioural model and psychoeducation was given. Then a therapeutic relationship was established with the client. In the continuation of the sessions, homework, relaxation exercises were given to the client and automatic thinking and basic beliefs were determined. At the end of the session, thanks to cognitive behavioural therapy, it will be seen that the client's fear of closed spaces and panic attack symptoms experienced in closed spaces decreased.

Elements of the Speech Absurd in the Novel “The Meerkat House” By A. Zhaksylykov

Elements of the Speech Absurd in the Novel “The Meerkat House” By A. Zhaksylykov

Author(s): Baizhigit Botagoz Sabitkyzy,Shmakova Elena Sergeevna,Altayeva Gulnar Abdullovna / Language(s): English Issue: 7/2024

In the theoretical part of the article, a literary review of the study of the category of the absurd in world and Russian literature is provided. Works by S.A. Kharlamova, V.Yu.charskaya-Boyko, G.M. Kruzhkov, W. Tigges, O.D. Burenina, and L.V. Safronova are considered. The practical part of the article describes elements of speech absurd in the novel “The Meerkat House” by A. Zhaksylykov. During the analysis of the verbal elements of the work, homogeneous enumerations are highlighted as elements of verbal absurdity that reach absurd proportions in the text. One important aspect of the work is the use of the “poetics of error” creating an effect of absurdity and unexpectedness in the text, contributing to the sense of the absurd. A technique of absurdity in the verbal organization of the work is the use of a large number of authorial neologisms in the characters’ speech, which are conditionally divided into several categories in the article. Additionally, the technique of “lexical hybridization” is considered in a comparative aspect in the novel’s text. Apart from identifying absurdity in the verbal organization of the novel, the absurdity of the novel’s characters, space and others are examined. The analysis reveals absurd metaphors and expressions, abbreviations understood only within the context of this novel and a large number of phrases with words like “corn”, “jugarn” and “jubuy”. A. Zhaksylykov employs a classic technique of absurdity, blurring the line between dream and reality, where events in dreams are almost indistinguishable from reality. The novel not only blends the dreams of the narrator but also simultaneously describes the protagonist’s past, his childhood spent in the village, his life in various transformations and more.

"GENERATION ME". THE GENESIS OF GENERATION AND ITS IMPACT ON SOCIETY

"GENERATION ME". THE GENESIS OF GENERATION AND ITS IMPACT ON SOCIETY

Author(s): Samira Cîrlig / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The self – centered generation or "Generation Me" (Twenge, 2014b) comprises young people who were born between 1980 and 2000. In the literature they are known as the 'Snowflake Generation' (Fox, 2016), 'Millennials' or 'Generation Y'. They are characterised by their overdeveloped egos, increased tendency of loneliness and propensity to develop new fears. In my paper I set out to find out "what causes have led to the genesis of this generation". To do this, I will first present some statistical data that I consider relevant because they show the importance of the subject studied. Then I will identify the causes that led to the emergence of this generation. I will classify these causes into two broad categories, primary and secondary, according to the importance that the studies consulted say they have in the psycho-socio-emotional development of these young people. The primary causes include the three basic institutions of any society, namely the family, the school and the Church, which are responsible for the educational process of young people. We have added to these three factors the time spent in front of a screen, be it a TV, laptop or phone, because the socio-historical context has given it particular importance. Then I will discuss the secondary causes.

Genetics of gambling disorder and related phenotypes: The potential uses of polygenic and multifactorial risk models to enable early detection and improve clinical outcomes

Genetics of gambling disorder and related phenotypes: The potential uses of polygenic and multifactorial risk models to enable early detection and improve clinical outcomes

Author(s): Varun Warrier,Samuel R. Chamberlain,Shane A. Thomas,Henrieta Bowden-Jones / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Gambling Disorder (GD) is an impactful behavioural addiction for which there appear to be underpinning genetic contributors. Twin studies show significant GD heritability results and intergenerational transmission show high rates of transmission. Recent developments in polygenic and multifactorial risk prediction modelling provide promising opportunities to enable early identification and intervention for at risk individuals. People with GD often have significant delays in diagnosis and subsequent help-seeking that can compromise their recovery. In this paper we advocate for more research into the utility of polygenic and multifactorial risk modelling in GD research and treatment programs and rigorous evaluation of its costs and benefits.

Learning and metacognition under volatility in GD: Lower learning rates and distorted coupling between action and confidence

Learning and metacognition under volatility in GD: Lower learning rates and distorted coupling between action and confidence

Author(s): Monja Hoven,JUDY LUIGJES,Ruth J. van Holst / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Background and aims: Decisions and learning processes are under metacognitive control, where confidence in one’s actions guides future behaviour. Indeed, studies have shown that being more confident results in less action updating and learning, and vice versa. This coupling between action and confidence can be disrupted, as has been found in individuals with high compulsivity symptoms. Patients with Gambling Disorder (GD) have been shown to exhibit both higher confidence and deficits in learning. Methods: In this study, we tested the hypotheses that patients with GD display increased confidence, reduced action updating and lower learning rates. Additionally, we investigated whether the action-confidence coupling was distorted in patients with GD. To address this, 27 patients with GD and 30 control participants performed a predictive inference task designed to assess action and confidence dynamics during learning under volatility. Action-updating, confidence and their coupling were assessed and computational modeling estimated parameters for learning rates, error sensitivity, and sensitivity to environmental changes. Results: Contrary to our expectations, results revealed no significant group differences in action updating or confidence levels. Nevertheless, GD patients exhibited a weakened coupling between confidence and action, as well as lower learning rates. Discussion and conclusions: This suggests that patients with GD may underutilize confidence when steering future behavioral choices. Ultimately, these findings point to a disruption of metacognitive control in GD, without a general overconfidence bias in neutral, non-incentivized volatile learning contexts.

Using latent class analysis to identify different clinical profiles according to food addiction symptoms in obesity with and without binge eating disorder

Using latent class analysis to identify different clinical profiles according to food addiction symptoms in obesity with and without binge eating disorder

Author(s): MATTEO ALOI,MARCO TULLIO LIUZZA,MARIANNA RANIA,ELVIRA ANNA CARBONE,Renato de Filippis,Ashley Gearhardt,CRISTINA SEGURA-GARCIA / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Background and aims: Existing research suggests that food addiction (FA) is associated with binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity, but the clinical significance of this relationship remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the different clinical profiles of FA symptoms among patients who have obesity with/without BED using latent class analysis (LCA). Methods: 307 patients (n 5 152 obesity and BED, n 5 155 obesity without BED) completed a battery of self-report measures investigating eating psychopathology, depression, emotional dysregulation, alexithymia, schema domains, and FA. LCA and ANOVAs were conducted to identify profiles according to FA symptoms and examine differences between classes. Results: LCA identified five meaningful classes labeled as the “non-addicted” (40.4%), the “attempters” (20.2%), the “interpersonal problems” (7.2%), the “high-functioning addicted” (19.5%) and the “fully addicted” (12.7%) classes. Patients with BED and obesity appeared overrepresented in the “high-functioning addicted” and “fully addicted” classes; conversely, patients with obesity without BED were most frequently included in the “non-addicted” class. The most significant differences between the “high-functioning addicted” and “fully addicted” classes versus the “non-addicted” class regarded heightened severity of eating and general psychopathology. Discussion and conclusions: The results bring to light distinct clinical profiles based on FA symptoms. Notably, the "high-functioning addicted" class is particularly intriguing as its members demonstrate physical symptoms of FA (i.e., tolerance and withdrawal) and psychological ones (i.e., craving and consequences) but are not as functionally impaired as the “fully addicted” class. Identifying different profiles according to FA symptoms holds potential value in providing tailored and timely interventions.
