Body mass index, personality traits, and body image in Italian pre-adolescents: An opportunity for overweight prevention

Body mass index, personality traits, and body image in Italian pre-adolescents: An opportunity for overweight prevention

Author(s): Veronica Rosa,Manuela Tomai,Marco Lauriola,Gabriela Martino,Michela Di Trani / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

We investigated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and personality traits, socioeconomic status (SES), and body image (BI) at the beginning of preadolescence. Data were collected from 238 Italian children aged 10–11 years using self-report scales. Information about SES was derived from parental education and professional status. BI was the variable the most strongly associated with BMI. Controlling for BI, SES, and gender, Agreeableness was inversely associated with BMI, whilst Extroversion was related to BMI in girls only. Gender did not moderate the associations between BI and BMI at this age. The relationship of certain personality traits with BMI is likely to emerge during preadolescence. Early interventions to reduce overweight and obesity could consider the interplay of Agreeableness and Extroversion with gender, BI, and SES.

Comunicarea nonverbală ca o condiție de bază a managementului impresiei

Comunicarea nonverbală ca o condiție de bază a managementului impresiei

Author(s): Lucia Bîtca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 3-4/2019

One of the most important skills present in the social life of people refers to the presentation of own person in a positive light in front of others. The management of the impression which person can perform was recognized over time as a vital aspect regarding the look of the romantic attraction, the occupational and organizational success, the accomplishment of the desired identity, the establishment of interpersonal relationships as well as other desirable results. Although there has been a growing interest in research during the 1960s, 1970s, the concept of impression management has remained a relatively peripheral subject concerning social psychology or personality psychology, this is leading some researchers to the idea according to which the impression management is rather a model for guidance in other researches, then a theory related to the interpersonal behavior. In the specialized literature there are a lot of variables that influence the management of impression, but there are only two of these variables that are representative for a careful analysis of the process. These variables refer to the two distinct processes, represented by "impression motivation" and "impression construction". People are used to monitor their impact on others, trying to model the impressions which others have or form about them. Once the person is motivated to create a certain impression on others, the problem is limited to the desirable image and the means by which one can achieve this image. The topic of nonverbal communication and impression of management, represent actuality, because the its strongest argument represents persons, which are, par excellence, social beings, that communicate a lot and establish relationships between them. People need tools as best as possible to communicate efficiently and harmoniously. Moreover, the knowledge of some peculiarities related to communication can give us a strong sense of confidence and personal strength, because it manages to make ourselves better, to be more convincing and to influence normally, to sell our image efficiently. Any means of communicating with other people is seen through the need to be considered an integral part of a community where they live in. During the course of human evolution, the nonverbal aspects of communication had a low attention, being studied starting with 1960s. The earliest attempts to approach systematically expressive actions, even in the writings of Greece and, later, of Rome, have been accorded, in one way or another, great importance. In the broad sense, by nonverbal communication we mean to transmit voluntarily and involuntarily of information and to exert influence by behavior elements and the physical presentation of the individual or other social units (human unities or groups), as well as the perception and the usage of space and time, artifacts, cumulating messages which are not expressed by words and which can be decoded, creating meanings. Nonverbal communication, called as well the body language or analogic communication has a greater height regarding the content of a message, in comparison with verbal communication. Nonverbal communication make easy the coding information and decoding messages, and when it doesn’t harmonize or it is in contradiction with verbal message, or what is known about a certain person is that who gains more trust, because it is a well-known fact recognized by many specialists from the field – it is more difficult to lie by nonverbal communication, even if, frequently, the lie is the result of consequences.

PSIHOPATOLOŠKA OBILJEŽJA LIČNOSTI KOD OSOBA S PTSP-om S OBZIROM NA STATUS SUICIDALNOSTI

Author(s): Vildana Aziraj-Smajić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 9/2017

The results of previous research increasingly indicate the correlation of PTSD and suicidality, and this increasingly imposes the importance of identifying suicidal behaviors in the population of PTSD, as well as timely preventive action in a clinical practice. Addressing the potential differences between suicidal and non-suicidal people with PTSD, so far has not yielded consistent results. The aim of this research is to examine whether there are differences in the psychopathological characteristics of a personality with between persons with PTSD in regard to their suicidal status. The survey has involved 147 participants, out of which 91 men and 56 women who were diagnosed with PTSD according to MKB-10. Based on suicide status (suicidal / non-suicidal), the sample is divided into two subunits.

Construction of a Religious Identity Status Questionnaire

Construction of a Religious Identity Status Questionnaire

Author(s): Irena Stojković,Sanja Dimoski,Jovan Mirić / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

This study presents a construction and psychometric evaluation of the Religious IdentityStatus Questionnaire – RISQ for the assessment of the religious identity status according toMarcia’s ego identity status approach. The initial item pool was generated based on Erikson’stheory of psychosocial development, Marcia’s ego identity status approach and interviewswith adolescents and young adults. A factor analysis of the initial item pool was performedon data obtained from a sample of 394 secondary school and university students from Serbiato select items for the questionnaire. Validity of the questionnaire was examined on a sampleof 1155 subjects. The results of the CFA suggest that subscales of the RISQ measure fourfactors corresponding to the identity statuses of Marcia’s model. Correlations with ideologicalidentity subscales of the EOM–EIS–2 suggest the convergent validity of the questionnaire.Configural measurement invariance was established for gender and denominational groups.Metric invariance was established for gender and among orthodox and catholic participants, whereas scalar invariance was established for gender, but not for denominational groups.

COPING STRATEGIES AND THE DIMENSIONS OF ATTACHMENT IN STUDENTS

Author(s): Tatjana Stefanović Stanojević,Jasmina Nedeljković / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The paper focuses on the relationship between the dimensions of affective attachment and a three-dimensional model of coping strategies (problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping and avoidance: distraction and social diversion). To analyze this problem, the Coping in Stressful Situations questionnaire (CISS, Endler & Parker, 1990) along with the Questionnaire for Attachment Assessment (UPIPAV -R, Hanak, 2004; Hanak 2011) was used on a sample of 152 students of the Faculty of Philosophy. The results indicate the existence of significant correlations between coping strategies and the dimensions of attachment. Specifically, there is a negative correlation between problem-focused coping and unresolved family trauma, fear of using an outside secure base and a negative working model of self, while there is a positive correlation with the ability to mentalize. There is a positive correlation between emotion-focused coping and distraction strategies, and fear of using an outside secure base, a negative working model of self and negative working model of others, and poor anger management where there is a positive correlation between emotion-focused coping and unresolved family trauma. Finally, there is a negative correlation between social diversion and unresolved trauma, and a negative working model of self and a positive one between fear of using an outside secure base. The results of the regression analysis indicate that the aforementioned dimensions of affective attachment, as predictors explain 21,1% of the variance of problem-focused coping, 13,3% of the variance of the distraction strategy, 24,6% of the variance of the strategy of social diversion, and as much as 49,9% of the variance of emotion-focused coping. Even though drawing any conclusions requires a greater sample, we could say that the participants are more prone to maladaptive coping if they display more pronounced dimensions of affective attachment typical of insecure patterns of attachment (a negative working model of self and a negative working model of others, unresolved family trauma, fear of using an outside secure base and poor anger management).

Spontaneous creativity: An overview of theories crucial to musical idea generation

Spontaneous creativity: An overview of theories crucial to musical idea generation

Author(s): Natalia Copeland / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

The aim of this article is to present selected concepts related to idea generation in musical com-position. Different approaches towards creativity are discussed in order to delineate how they describe spontaneous creativity. The typological view of composers and theories of the creative process are discussed. Further advances in studies of creative cognition are scrutinized: research on unconscious and conscious processes in creation, followed by the development of the concept of innovative Involuntary Musical Imagery (InMI) in composers. Current research on internal auditory phenomena suggests that composers’ InMI can be potentially innovative and serve composers as a source of ready ideas to be used in their compositions. The current overview is informed by cognitive sciences and creative process studies, especially compositional studies.

Differences in the stress coping styles and social skills between classical and jazz musicians

Differences in the stress coping styles and social skills between classical and jazz musicians

Author(s): Anna Antonina Nogaj,Izabela Czarnecka,Roman Ossowski / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

The musical milieu raises a number of challenges for artists. Coping with these depends not only on the level of musical abilities but also on a number of personal skills. The diverse styles of music education and the expectations set for musicians performing various music genres have inspired research exploring the differences between classical and jazz musicians. Of the psychological areas important for functioning effectively as a musician, stress management styles and social skills have been examined in this study. It was assumed that the genre of publicly performed music, and thus the different modes of music education in the field of classical and jazz music performance, can cause significant differences in the psychological functioning of musicians. Of the 73 musicians who participated in the study, 38 were classical musicians and 35 were jazz musicians. The jazz musicians revealed a significantly higher level of social competence in terms of social exposure compared to the classical musicians. There were no differences in the style of coping with stress between the two groups. The results of the study might inspire psychologists working with musicians to plan therapeutic programs aimed at psychological preparation for public performances, with the specificity of musical genres taken into account. Future research may investigate the extent temperament and personality of musicians representing different specialties influence their stress coping strategies and social skills.

Mental practice of musically gifted adolescents

Mental practice of musically gifted adolescents

Author(s): Stella Kaczmarek / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

In the last decade, the growing interest in the subject of musicians’ mental practice has produced a significant increase in research on mental and instrumental practice. More than half of all the studies concerns professional musicians, and relatively little research is conducted on children or adolescents. The article will describe research on the mental practice of teenagers attending music schools in Poland and Germany. Questionnaire surveys answer the question of whether young people use mental practice, how they do it, and what the content of mental training while practicing an instrument is. The analysis suggests that gifted adolescents from both countries (1) do not use mental rehearsal very often and (2) use mental practice strategies in a similar way. What they differ in is the frequency of using mental practice as an integral part of their instrumental learning, using musical-analytical strategy, and the quality of mental practice. The study indicates the need to teach mental practice and its importance in increasing the effectiveness of instrumental practice.

What do we actually measure as music-induced emotions?

What do we actually measure as music-induced emotions?

Author(s): Maciej Janowski,Maria Chełkowska-Zacharewicz / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2019

The paper presents the results of a systematic review of 61 empirical studies in which emotions in response to music were measured. The analysis of each study was focused on the measurement of emotion components and the conceptualization of emotion both in hypothesis and discussion. The review does not support the claim that music evokes the same emotional reactions as life events do, especially modal emotions. Notably, neither a high intensity of feelings, nor intentionality were confirmed in relation to musical experiences, the emergence of specific action tendencies, or specific physiological changes. Based on the obtained results, it is recommended to use the terms “affect” or “music emotions” with reference to emotions experienced in reaction to music and to abandon the term “emotions” as misleading.

WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING: SPOTTING THE DARK TRIAD OF PERSONALITY IN ORGANIZATIONS AND OVERCOMING THE TROUBLES THEY CAUSE

Author(s): Can Biçer / Language(s): English Issue: 19/2020

The purpose of this paper is to examine the Dark Triad personality traits and to show the ways of spotting them easily and exactly at workplaces in order to reduce their destructive effects in organizations. The dark personality characteristics mainly refer to socially aversive behaviors and associated with various kinds of interpersonal difficulties, problems and cover potentially destructive behaviors such as aggression, deception, manipulation and exploitation. The Dark Triad of personality is the group of personality traits which includes narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. The maladaptive features of the Dark Triad often deteriorate the work flow and relationships among employees at work. The Dark Triad traits are related with behaviors and features that lead to impaired social relationship functioning including aggressive tendencies, limited empathic abilities, hostility, and deception at workplaces. The Dark Triad traits: are the prominent socially destructive personality traits that simply poison the organizations because these traits might cause serious counterproductive behaviors that may lead to huge hidden costs (e.g., employee burnout, higher employee turnover) for the organizations. In this conceptual study, the Dark Triad of Personality, will be outlined and the behaviors of the employees that show the Dark Triad traits will be focused on thoroughly. In the conclusion section, the recommendations will be made and solutions will be offered in order to reduce and overcome their devastating effects at workplaces.

ROLE OF PERSONAL CONSTRUCTS IN THE PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES USE PREVENTION AND RESOCIALIZATION OF JUVENILES CONVICTED

Author(s): Petro Husak,Tetyana Martynyuk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

The paper deals with the issue of the psychoactive substances use prevention and resocialization of juveniles convicted and the role of personal constructs in this process. It is proved that facing danger, threat or a challenging event motivates individuals, juveniles convicted, to adapt or reduce stress by use of coping strategies. Among the coping resources authors consider personal coping resources, in particular, perceived self-efficacy, a personal sense of control, and selfregulatory efficacy. From a social-cognitive viewpoint, the key ingredients of any psychological treatment in the psychoactive substances use prevention should be the identification of high-risk situations that stimulate psychoactive substances use, the development and cultivation of perceived self-efficacy, and the application of adequate coping strategies.
