Mentoring and coaching on an organizational level

Mentoring and coaching on an organizational level

Author(s): Paul Marinescu / Language(s): English Issue: 11/2010

This paper is aimed at suggesting a few of the advantages of mentoring and coaching that could be equally beneficial to employees, managers and organizations. Organizational performances can be increased if people understand the sense of their development in connection to the development of competencies that are so necessary to organizational performance. The nuances of coaching and mentoring activities emphasize two professions that, if well dosed, can provide satisfactions to both the individual (employee) and the organization. Along with other methods and techniques (NLP, social intelligence, emotional intelligence), coaching and mentoring allow for synchronized actions to be taken in order to achieve organizational development.

An Integrative Perspective on Understanding Human Functioning: Positive Clinical Psychology

Author(s): Özlem Öztürk,Zeynep Maçkalı / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

The number of studies conducted with a holistic perspective as an alternative to the traditional clinical psychology approach has increased. It is noteworthy that studies examine the effects of positive concepts on human health in addition to discomfort. In this study, it was aimed to examine four concepts that are frequently researched in positive psychology, namely well-being, psychological resilience, hope and coping in an integrative context. Also, it was aimed to give information about the positive clinical psychology approach and the studies which investigate these four positive concepts. Studies were searched through PsycARTICLE, EBSCO and Pubmed electronic databases. Totally 208 studies were reached and 26 articles were included in this review article. As a result, the effective results in treatment of psychological disorders and increase of well-being of an individual with positive psychology interventions suggest that it is important to expand the positive perspective in clinical psychology. It is thought that it may be clinically important that the presence/increase of positive concepts as well as the absence/decrease of psychopathologies should be one of the treatment targets of mental health specialists. It is hoped that adopting an integrative perspective in future studies will enrich empirical research in the field of psychotherapy.

O propunere de adaptare pentru limba română a unei probe de fluență verbală fonematică (testul de asociere orală controlată a cuvintelor – COWAT)

Author(s): Ovidiu Tudorean,Alois Gherguț / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2022

Verbal fluency is an indicator of good cognitive functioning. The Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWAT) is part of the examination tools in neuropsychology. For English there are stratified standards by age and background (Tombaugh, Kozak, & Rees, 1999). The phonemic combinations used are F-A-S, C-T-L or P-R-W. These combinations are not specific to the Romanian language. This study proposes a way to identify phonemes that could be specific to the Romanian language for an adapted version of the COWAT test.

DEVELOPMENT OF DEFENSE MECHANISMS AND STRATEGIES EFFICIENT COPING IN ADOLESCENTS

DEVELOPMENT OF DEFENSE MECHANISMS AND STRATEGIES EFFICIENT COPING IN ADOLESCENTS

Author(s): Maria Pleșca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 31/2022

In the article, it is demonstrated that structured and organized psychological intervention activities contribute to the development of the ability to control stress and have favored the optimization of defense mechanisms and coping strategies in adolescents. Thanks to the psychological intervention program, the subjects in GE obtained higher scores, in constructive defense mechanisms and effective coping strategies, higher scores than those in GC. GE teenagers have their contact, openness, tact, goodwill, and cordiality, the tendency towards psychological closeness in communication. They have become more interested in those around them, trying to be in good relations with others, and they respect the norms and rules more. Adolescents have become more confident in their strength, more balanced, more controlled, more patient, optimistic, and energetic, they act quickly and efficiently, tenaciously pursuing their goals. They have a relaxed demeanor, they are active within the norm, they tend to set the tone and impose themselves in a controlled manner, to appear in a more favorable light, and they show tendencies to conceal small weaknesses.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION STYLES IN ADOLESCENTS WITH AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR

CONFLICT RESOLUTION STYLES IN ADOLESCENTS WITH AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR

Author(s): Maria Pleșca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 32/2023

The article is dedicated to solving a relevant problem - the study of the peculiarities of aggressive behavior in adolescents, as well as the relationship between such significant variables as a person's aggressiveness in interpersonal interaction and the style of behavior in a conflict situation. Aggressiveness is a fairly stable characteristic of the personality, due, on the one hand, to psychophysiological characteristics, and on the other hand, it reflects the internal position of the personality and socialization processes. Being connected in a certain way with other characteristics of the personality, aggressiveness significantly affects the formation of the characteristics of the individual's activity and communication. The image of a conflict situation corresponds to all the main indicators and characteristics of ontological reality: it is always correlated with the subject; it is presented in a person's mind in a "folded" form; it mediates and refracts external influences. According to the results of the correlation analysis, significant relationships were identified between the scales: "Resentment" and "Adaptation" (r=-0.328, p≤0.05); "Verbal aggressiveness" and "Adaptation" (r=-0.41, p≤0.01). An inversely proportional statistical relationship was revealed between such a type of behavior in a conflict situation as "Adaptation" and such a form of manifestation of aggression as "Resentment". This suggests that the more often a student uses such a behavior strategy in conflicts as "Adaptation", the less a form of aggression such as "Resentment" (r=-0.328, p≤0.05) is manifested in behavior.

O WOLNOŚCI WOLI W PSYCHOLOGII

Author(s): Dorota Kuncewicz,Dariusz Kuncewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2022

The paper reflects on the status of free will in academic psychology and psychological practice. In contemporary academic psychology, dominated by the naturalistic model of science, the concept of free will is usually disregarded. The problem of free will was replaced by other issues (including self-regulation, self-determination, detailed goal-setting, action planning, and action control) or is discussed in terms of psychological mechanisms or illusory beliefs. In psychological practice, the original understanding of free will, embedded in philosophy and ethics, was marginalised as useless in the context of the belief in the determinism of disorders and the subjectivity of truth. The original interpretation of free will, however, is clearly present in the work of the classics of psychology and the therapeutic approach focused on analysing patients’ decisions. The return of free will and related issues to psychology is to be expected within the framework of the personalist-existentialist current, even though it now faces methodological limitations. The fi nal section proposes a way to overcome these limitations, based on the methodology of literary hermeneutics, embedded in cognitive realism, and other research approaches that take into account freedom of the human will and are relevant to psychological theory and practice.

Corporeality Affected by the Loss of a Loved One – Manifestations of the Body in the Experiences of Former Wards of Social Rehabilitation Centers

Author(s): Agnieszka Jaros / Language(s): English Issue: 62/2023

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the bodily dimension of the loss of a loved one and ways of dealing with such an experience manifested in action. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem was formulated as a question: How do former wards of social rehabilitation centers experience and what meaning do they assign to the death of a loved one? The study used the biographical method, while the autobiographical narrative interview was used for data acquisition. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The theoretical framework of this study on the boundary situation of the death of a loved one is Karl Jasper’s approach as well as Edith Stein’s theory of empathy, from which analytical codes were derived was discussed. RESEARCH RESULTS: The death of a loved one experienced as a loss generates feelings that manifest in bodily forms of expression. The suffering resulting from the loss led to the development of new patterns of action: escapist and developmental-escapist. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: The basic conclusion is that the loss of a love one as a boundary situation, when one is not looked after and lives alone leads to abnormal social functioning. Thus, such experiences should arouse a great deal of attention from people caring for children and youth.

Model uzależnienia w rozumieniu filozofii grup samopomocowych aterapia poznawczo-behawioralna w leczeniu napadowego objadania się

Author(s): Robert Opora / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2023

Addictions may appear in many normal and even everyday human behaviors. Mechanisms typical of addiction can also be seen in other disorders identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5): binge eating, for example. The article points out the similarities between the symptoms of binge eating and addiction to psychoactive substances. The traditional understanding of addiction is adopted, referring to the philosophy of self-help groups and the strategic and structural concept. Next, the differences between these disorders are discussed. The article then presents the differences between the adopted model of addiction and cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of binge eating. Reference is also made to research on the mechanisms underlying the disorder. Subsequently, based on the described differences, the implications for therapy in people with binge eating disorder are presented. These differences primarily concern cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects. For the purposes of the article, the diagnostic criteria for binge eating disorder and for alcohol use disorders presented in the DSM-5 are used. In addition, an analysis of the literature on the subject was carried out and the collected information was supplemented with observations from the author’s clinical practice.

PTSD Symptoms, Driving Stress, and Anxious Driving Behavior Among Novice Drivers

PTSD Symptoms, Driving Stress, and Anxious Driving Behavior Among Novice Drivers

Author(s): Mălina Corlătianu,Cornelia Măirean,Alexandra Maftei / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 4/2023

The present study aimed to evaluate how PTSD symptomatology and general daily stress predict anxious driving behavior. A sample of 119 drivers in their first year since obtaining a driving license who were implicated in a minor or major car crash (caused by them or as a victim/witness) in the last year participated in this study (50.9% men, Mage = 23.78, SD = 5.47). The participants completed scales for measuring PTSD symptoms, driving stress dimensions (i.e., aggression, dislike of driving, hazard monitoring, proneness to fatigue, and thrill-seeking), and anxious driving behavior dimensions (i.e., performance deficits, exaggerated safety behavior, and hostile behavior). The results indicated that aggression positively predicted hostile behavior, while dislike of driving was a positive predictor for performance deficits and a negative predictor for hostile behavior. Thrill-seeking and proneness to fatigue positively predicted performance deficits. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.

Psychiatric manifestations in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jacobs’s disease. Challenges in neuroimaging and diagnostic concepts.

Psychiatric manifestations in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jacobs’s disease. Challenges in neuroimaging and diagnostic concepts.

Author(s): Ghenadie Cărăușu,Valentina Eremia,Oxana Grosu,Lilia ROTARU,Roxana Chiriță / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Background: Rapid symptom progression is one of the most important clues that a person may have Creutzfeldt-Jakob’s disease. There is no single test-or any combination of tests-that can conclusively diagnose sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in a living person. Objectives: The aim of this article is to study some distinct features of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jacobs’s disease in order to make a differential diagnosis with other disorders.Material and Methods. It is a review of publications from the last years, using medical sites such as PubMed, Medscape, NCBI, Med bullets. A clinical case is also presented.Results. Creutzfeldt-Jakob’s disease (CJD) is the most common human form of a group of rare, fatal brain disorders known as prion diseases. Prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob’s disease, occur when prion protein, which is found throughout the body but whose normal function isn't yet known, begins folding into an abnormal three-dimensional shape. This shape change gradually triggers prion protein in the brain to fold into the same abnormal shape. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease causes a type of dementia that gets worse unusually fast. More common causes of dementia, such as Alzheimer's, Lewy body dementia and fronto-temporal dementia, typically progress more slowly. Generally, there are three types of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: sporadic, familial and acquired. Conclusions. Creutzfeldt-Jakob’s disease is a rare disease with psychiatric symptoms who include depression, agitation, apathy, disorientation, problems with memory, thinking, planning and judgment. The clinical presentation of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakobs disease usually begins with a psychiatric prodrome, often at least 6 months before the onset of traditional neurologic symptoms.

Abordare din perspectivă psiholigvistică a limbajului și comunicării în tulburarea de spectru autist (TSA)

Abordare din perspectivă psiholigvistică a limbajului și comunicării în tulburarea de spectru autist (TSA)

Author(s): Ioana IRIMIA / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

Psycholinguistics is a field that combines methods and theories from psychology and linguistics to gain a fuller understanding of human language. The connection between the human psyche and language is the focus of research in psycholinguistics. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common and heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by language impairment, social and communicative deficits and repetitive behaviours. Echolalia is considered a predominant feature of ASD. Early intervention should be started as soon as a diagnosis is made, as social, play and language domains do not develop at the expected rate or in the expected multimodal, integrated manner. Using the language sample analysis technique, it is observed that echolalia and the number of abstract words do not influence mean utterance length, but the number of novel words correlates with mean utterance length. The psycholinguistic approach helps to gain a deeper understanding of language deficits and influences speech therapy intervention.

Роль насилия и фальсификаций при подготовке протоколов допросов эпохи сталинизма

Роль насилия и фальсификаций при подготовке протоколов допросов эпохи сталинизма

Author(s): David Brandenberger / Language(s): Russian Issue: 43/2023

This article shows the problematic nature of modern studies that consider interrogation protocols of the Stalinist era to be reliable sources in their analyses. To begin with, these studies use primitive and inconsistent methodologies in their analysis of the interrogation protocols. Most of them approach the problem without the appropriate level of criticism, expressing little or no doubt about the content of these documents. Others, which claim to have adopted more specific methodological approaches, often base them on unverified hypotheses instead of empirically-proven principles. Secondly, these studies ignore recent work in neuroscience and cognitive, social, and clinical psychology that shows that coercion and torture undermine the ability of those under interrogation to give credible testimony. Biomedical studies have demonstrated that extremely stressful conditions (torture, coercion, blackmail, fear, deprivation of sleep and food, etc.) impair the function of the mind and erode its ability to retrieve reliable information from memory, especially affecting the accuracy and clarity of these recollections. Such techniques can significantly distort the testimony of detainees and even force those under interrogation to change their testimony, to repeat false information provided by the investigator or to falsely incriminate themselves. Thirdly, these studies overlook the fact that state security officials of that period systematically falsified interrogation protocols. Protocols, as a rule, were drawn up by the investigators and then were simply signed by those under interrogation — a practice that raises questions about how accurately these protocols convey the actual words, expressions and meanings contained in the elicited testimony. What’s more, many investigators are known to have often added details or to have embellished the confessions, while others made up entire conspiracies from scratch, before forcing the suspects to sign protocols recording their false confessions. This article illustrates these theses with evidence from the case of A. V. Putintsev, a state security investigator between 1941–1954.

REDUCTION OF ATTACHMENT TRAUMA THROUGH THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

REDUCTION OF ATTACHMENT TRAUMA THROUGH THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

Author(s): Gabriela Leuțanu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

Psychological trauma represents an injury to the mind that occurred as an effect of a stressful event, it can be the consequence of the effect of an experience in suffering or recurring events. Jealousy is a universal trait and is an attachment trauma, generally referring to thoughts and feelings of fear, insecurity, worry about a relative lack of safety or possessions. The rehabilitation program had as its general objective the promotion of the individuality of people who manifest trauma from jealousy and the optimization of interpersonal relationships. It took place during 12 sessions, carried out in the office, the first two consisting of individual screening, the others being group therapies. Compared to the initial situation, mean jealousy scores decrease strongly following the therapeutic intervention, which may anticipate the existence of a strong effect.

How expected and experienced reward and relief contribute to gaming-related mental imagery and gaming frequency in daily life: Testing a dual pathway hypothesis

How expected and experienced reward and relief contribute to gaming-related mental imagery and gaming frequency in daily life: Testing a dual pathway hypothesis

Author(s): Annika Brandtner,Silke M. Müller,Matthias Brand / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Research on the development of gaming disorder assumes that the quality of reinforcement learning as well as the content of use expectancies are initially rewarding in the early stages of the addictive behavior and becomes steadily more compensatory in the later stages. This assumed transition could be reflected in gaming-related mental imagery as well as the decision to play videogames in daily life. Methods: We recruited 127 individuals who play videogames. Following a strict diagnostic procedure, individuals were either classified as showing casual or at-risk gaming patterns. The experience and expectancy of reward and relief were assessed in the laboratory, followed by a 14-day ambulatory assessment asking for gaming-related mental imagery intensity and playing frequency. Besides group differences, we tested a gratification and a compensation pathway in a structural equation model among groups separately. Results: Results indicate that mental imagery and playing frequency as well as reinforcement processes and use expectancies are heightened among individuals showing at-risk gaming patterns as compared to casual gaming patterns. Gaming-related mental imagery was only predicted by compensation among individuals showing casual gaming patterns, and we found no significant predictions for daily gaming frequency in any of the models. Discussion and conclusions: The results implicate that individuals with at-risk gaming patterns might hold stronger learned reinforcement contingencies. Daily usage seems unaffected by these contingencies, possibly indicative of habitualized behaviors. Additionally, the results provide some support for the consideration of imaginal desire thoughts as a specific coping mechanism in the context of gaming behaviors.

DEFENSE MECHANISMS OR STRESS REACTIONS

DEFENSE MECHANISMS OR STRESS REACTIONS

Author(s): Veronica Calancea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 36/2024

The stress reaction represents the force to fight, or conversely, the attitude of losing without fighting in the face of difficulties, difficulties or problems of physical and mental stress with a shock-like action. Depending on the intensity of the emotions to which they are subjected, people have negative reactions of different intensity and duration. Almost any kind of symptom can be a hidden sign of stress. If we learn to recognize minor, seemingly unimportant signs, we can become aware of the sources of our stress, thus managing to prevent the appearance of serious symptoms and more easily control the tension that tends to overwhelm us.
