APPLICATION OF DEEP LEARNING

Author(s): Kristian Đokić,Hrvoje Mikolčević,Ivica Šnajder / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of papers related to machine learning and the application of machine learning in various fields of science. Belmonte et al. observed that between 2010 and 2018, the growth in the number of papers related to machine learning topics and big data was exponential. They analysed 4240 scientific publications from the Web of Science citation database [1]. Xu et al., in the analysis of publications in the International Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics, noted that from 2010 to 2017, the number of publications, the cooperation rate, the total number of authors, and the degree of cooperation had shown an increasing trend [2]. Dokic et al. analysed the publication of papers in which deep learning is applied in the field of agriculture and noticed that the first papers were published in 2014, and in the second half of the second decade of the 21st century, exponential growth in the number of published papers was observed [3].The objectives of this paper are primarily to analyze the literature related to the application of deep learning in apple growing, to propose the division of these papers depending on the area, and to analyze the observed trends in publishing papers related to this topic. In the analysis, only papers published in scientific journals were considered, and the condition is that they be found in the citation databases of the Web of Science or Scopus. The second section gives a brief overview of deep learning and its development and a presentation of the importance of apple growing in agriculture. The third section is an overview of papers that use deep learning methods and solve some problems in growing apples. The third section is divided into four parts, depending on the area the paper deals with. The fourth section is a discussion and conclusion.

Pomiędzy Realnym podmiotu a rzeczywistością neuronauk.Historia pewnego złudzeniaw tle pedagogiki ignacjańskiej

Author(s): Klaudia Węc / Language(s): Polish Issue: 56/2021

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research analyses is to start a discussion on the importance of cognitive processes and neuroscientific theories in the aspect of Ignatian pedagogy and its assumptions regarding the sources of human cognition in his existence. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main research problem is determined by the question of the “element of thinking” as a key task for the presentation of the subject and pedagogy understood as a form of commitment to the Other. In my reflections, I use the topological and at the same time triangulatory perspective of thinking about subjectivity, which is determined by the discourse of psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan. In this sense, I assume that triangulation determines the logic of the causality of pedagogical discourses. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The perspective of research embedded in a critical paradigm allowing for a triad of discourse grounded in a context of language games, neurosciences and Ignatian pedagogy will be presented. RESEARCH RESULTS: The analysis of the research field and the cognitive field indicate the need to maintain a balance between individual discourses in order not to lead to the objectification of the discourse about the subject. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: There is need to dynamize subjective actions in order to maintain a balance between the individual links of his existence.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ DEPRESSION RISK VARIABLES IN UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, NIGERIA

Author(s): Shuaib Abolakale MUHAMMED,Mohammed Mustapha LAWAL / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The high rate of depression among undergraduate students has raised deepconcerns among counselors and medical practitioners. Thus, this study examined university student depression risk variables. Moderating factors were gender, age, level of study, and parental occupation status. Survey research was descriptive. This survey covered all 55,000 undergraduates at the University of Ilorin. The study included 420 undergraduates sampled using purposive, proportional, and simple random methods. The 1study used the "Risk Factors for Depression Questionnaire"(RFDQ) to obtain data. Percentages were utilized for demographic data, while mean and rank-order were employed to answer the research question. The t-test and ANOVA were used to test the four null hypotheses at the 0.05 level. The data shows that academic family and psychological factors are the main risk factors for students’ depression. The study found no significant differences in depression risk factors among undergraduates by level of study or parent occupation status, although gender and age revealed a significant difference. Based on the findings, undergraduates should be encouraged to receive adequate medical checkups to ensure cognitive and physical health wellness, regardless of gender, age, level of study, or parental occupation status, to address depression concerns. Mental health counselors should teach in-school adolescents depression prevention and management skills.

Neurourbanism: from effective to affective computing in urban planning

Neurourbanism: from effective to affective computing in urban planning

Author(s): Andreea Robu-Movilă / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2025

This study stands interdisciplinarity at the intersection of computational sciences with neurosciences and urbanism that converge in the emerging field entitled neurourbanism. The generative ecosystem and ubiquitous computing in urbanism have reimagined urban planning that came with a range of implications, one of them being the fact that the design problem tends to be reduced to merely data manipulation and effective computing. This approach is simplifying in relation to many ineffable and incomputable dimensions that define the urban planning complexity and addressability. Consequently, affective computation has been identified as a direct manipulation mechanism of re-inserting the meaningful subjective human values and feedback into the generative designing processes as well as a tool for analyzing the implications that urban gestures modify or alter human perception and behavior. This paper nominates and analyses a series of studies that embrace neuroscience and affective computation in urban planning design, as well as author’s own experimental journey in this regard, intending to serve as an introduction to practitioners of this new field of study.

Епигенетика, социални науки, етика и политика

Author(s): Ivan Katzarski / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2024

Major interpretations of epigenetics are considered – social-ecological, biomedical and bioethical, – as well as their impact on social sciences and humanities, policies and opportunities for human development. The following important conclusions are formulated: firstly, epigenetics can be a stimulus to reform social sciences, as well as for policies aiming at purer environment, less poverty and social inequality, more freedom and less violence; (2) one-sided and implicit biomedical interpretation of epigenetics not only does not solve but intensifies existing problems relating to health and wellbeing of people in contemporary societies; (3) this however does not mean rejecting the biomedical approach but finding it’s appropriate and balanced place in the context of functioning ecological and social policies; (4) practices and behavioural models that epigenetics determines as sensitive presuppose respective responsibilities on the part of various subjects – organisations, institutions and pаrticular individuals. A critical evaluation is necessary of attempts to reject responsibilities as well as of their imbalanced distribution among various subjects.

Brain responses to positive and negative events in individuals with internet gaming disorder during real gaming

Brain responses to positive and negative events in individuals with internet gaming disorder during real gaming

Author(s): Zhengije Zhang,Shizhen Wang,Xiaoxia Du,Yanyan Qi,Lingxiao Wang,Guang-Heng Dong / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This study sought to investigate brain responses to positive and negative events in individuals with internet gaming disorder (IGD) during real gaming as a direct assessment of the neural features of IGD. This investigation reflects the neural deficits in individuals with IGD while playing games, providing direct and effective targets for prevention and treatment of IGD. Methods: Thirty subjects with IGD and fifty-two matched recreational game use (RGU) subjects were scanned while playing an online game. Abnormal brain activities during positive and negative events were detected using a general linear model. Functional connectivity (FC) and correlation analyses between neural features and addiction severity were conducted to provide additional support for the underlying neural features. Results: Compared to the RGU subjects, the IGD subjects exhibited decreased activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during positive events and decreased activation in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG), precentral gyrus and postcentral gyrus during negative events. Decreased FC between the DLPFC and putamen during positive events and between the MFG and amygdala during negative events were observed among the IGD subjects. Neural features and addiction severity were significantly correlated. Conclusions: Individuals with IGD exhibited deficits in regulating game craving, maladaptive habitual gaming behaviors and negative emotions when experiencing positive and negative events during real game-playing compared to RGU gamers. These abnormalities in neural substrates during real gaming provide direct evidence for explaining why individuals with IGD uncontrollably and continuously engage in game playing, despite negative consequences.

SPATIAL THINKING: WHERE PEDAGOGY MEETS NEUROSCIENCE

SPATIAL THINKING: WHERE PEDAGOGY MEETS NEUROSCIENCE

Author(s): Philip J. Gersmehl,Carol A. Gersmehl / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2011

Much of geographic education is a process of training students to think geographically when they look at a photo, map, or other spatial representation. Research on human cognition, however, has undergone a revolution in the past 20 years. Before the 1990s, human brain research consisted mainly of finding people whose brains had been damaged by strokes or in wars or industrial accidents, and measuring what kinds of “thinking” they could no longer do. Then, several new brain-scanning technologies made it possible to observe brain activity as people did various activities. That kind of research clearly shows that spatial thinking is a complex process. A skilled map reader appears to engage different brain structures in order to compare places, delimit regions, describe spatial patterns or transitions, recognize spatial associations, identify spatial hierarchies, and so forth. That fact has implications for curriculum development, educational materials design, and student assessment.

RECONSIDERATION OF LEARNING THEORIES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THEIR APPROACH IN THE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT

Author(s): Laura BUTARU / Language(s): English Issue: 2, Suppl./2023

The attempt of the scientists to understand and explain/describe the mechanisms of human learning has been an on going and important concern with implications in various fields of endeavor. Thus, the variety of learning theories that are objectified in learning models or styles is explained. In the present study, we analyze the most important psychological theories of learning, viewed from the perspective of an environment that is increasingly present in people's lives, when we talk about learning - the virtual environment. Are assessment of these theories is important, because although they are well-known, they have an explanatory power, facilitating learning in the online environment, with the mention of correctly capturing the pedagogical/educational demands of designing such an activity. On a practical-applicative level, we have carried out pedagogical microresearch of a constative type, following the attitude of teachers towards learning carried out in virtual environments, the challenges that the act of designing entails, psycho-pedagogical demands of learning in the virtual environment. The questionnaire applied to more than 100 teachers in pre-university education captures their needs regarding the organization of the training space in the virtual environment. So, the ubiquity of learning is a modern characteristic of instruction and education, it remains for teachers to identify solutions for achievement, adaptation to situations and contexts as different as possible, as well as revaluing the psychological theories of learning from the perspective of technological learning environments.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-DIRECTED EMOTIONS AND DEPRESSION: THE INFLUENCE OF RUMINATION ON THIS RELATIONSHIP

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-DIRECTED EMOTIONS AND DEPRESSION: THE INFLUENCE OF RUMINATION ON THIS RELATIONSHIP

Author(s): Dana A. Iclozan / Language(s): English Issue: 36/2024

This study investigates the relationships among self-directed emotions (shame and guilt), depression, and the moderating role of rumination within a clinical sample. Prior research has identified rumination as a critical factor in depression, yet its interaction with specific emotions like shame and guilt remains underexplored. This research aims to elucidate how rumination influences the relationship between these self-directed emotions and depressive symptoms. Participants included N=53 psychiatric inpatients, for whom assessments were conducted to measure levels of shame, guilt, rumination, and depressive symptoms. Findings indicate that shame, but not guilt, is significantly correlated with depressive symptoms, with rumination not moderating these relationships. These results highlight the importance of targeting shame in depression treatments and call for further examination of rumination's role in this dynamic. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the emotional underpinnings of depression and the complex function of rumination, suggesting directions for future research and clinical practice.

Analysis of the brain’s responses to the approach-avoidance behavior in architectural experience

Author(s): Navid Khaleghimoghaddam / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

Creating an optimal environment that addresses the users’ psychological and behavioral needs requires a deep understanding of mental processes. Advances in neuroscience and applying its technical methods, such as neuroimaging, have provided the possibility to make an objective exploration of how architecture affects users’ brain reactions. This study aims to objectify the effects of spatial characteristics of architectural settings on the brain’s responses and the users’ approach-avoidance behavior. Therefore, to determine the regional activation of the nervous system responsible for emotions and approach-avoidance behavior, participants’ brains were scanned with functional magnetic resonance imaging while looking at photographs of architectural spaces. Results showed that the pleasant and unpleasant spaces activate the brain structures involved in positive and negative emotions. Additionally, pleasant and unpleasant spaces were more likely to elicit inter and exit decisions and activate the brain’s regions engaged in approach and avoidance decisions.

Role of nutrition in depression

Author(s): Samia Mushtaq,Hina Mazhar,Sidra Khalid,Maryam Younas,Iqra Zahid,Mahnoor Jafar,Laraib Azhar,Mariam Amir,Maria Aslam / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2020

One of the major causes of global disability is depression. Many patients suffering from depression are not able show a positive response to treatments used to cure depression. Initial studies show that parallel nutrition therapy has the ability to ameliorate treatment results in patients suffering from depression. In this article we review the studies for the effectiveness and mechanism of the following nutrients: magnesium, vitamin D, Folate, zinc, omega 3 and vitamin B6. The existing knowledge and data proves that these nutrients may aid in mood management by managing the neurotransmitters, by carrying out oxidation-reduction or by regulating the structure of neurons. In spite of the fact that the preliminary research is favorable, larger placebo controlled studies are required to substantiate, corroborate and verify the effectiveness of the research.

Introjection and dissociative identity disorder: a case report

Author(s): George Letterio,Karlyle Bistas,Emmanuel Katehis,Puja Patel,Heela Azizi,Ayodele Jolayemi / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2020

Background: We wish to add to the current body of knowledge by investigating the different factors that play into the development of dissociative identity disorder, particularly trauma. DID in accordance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-5) is defined as a disruption in the identity by the presence of two or more distinct personality states, which often occurs after significant trauma. Ferenzci’s explored this with the theory on trauma-inducing neurosis. This theory was applied to our case presentation. Case presentation: We present a 19-year-old female patient who presented with active shifting of personalities was visualized in the clinical setting. This patient had experienced various forms of traumatic abuse, including sexual, verbal, physical, and even neglectful abuse from multiple family members. The patient developed dissociative states in which characteristics of the aggressors were mimicked. Conclusion: Ferenzci’s idea that traumatic situations likely trigger dissociative states during the early years in this patient was noticed in ⅗ personalities, while ⅖ did not support this claim. The other two dissociative states included the host, being the decisionmaker and leading figure, and also a euphoric character that exhibited regression when she felt comfortable. Although this case report supports some aspects of Ferenzci’s ideas on trauma-inducing neurosis, other theories must be explored to understand further the personalities that do not display aggressiveness.

Psychological violence in conjugality: a case study in light of systemic therapy

Author(s): Patrícia Manozzo Colossi / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2019

Psychological violence in the marriage presents itself as a multifaceted phenomenon that assumes importance in the field of psychotherapy for treating those involved in this context. The present case study refers to a 32 and 40 years-old heterosexual couple, no child, whose marital care took place for 20 sessions during 10 months of follow-up due to multiple conflicts. For the understanding of the case, we used a measurement scale of violence (CTS2) and reports of the couple psychological care. The CTS2 identified the presence of psychological violence and excluded other expressions of violence. They were identified with experiences of violence in families of origin of partners, communication difficulties and emotional expression, such aspects that extended the relational difficulties. The couple was assisted and helped in the recognition of their own family histories, their emotions and dissatisfaction and, as a result, could progressively recognize themselves as an active participant in conflict resolution, qualifying the relationship to both.

Author(s): Braham Deep Sindhu,Amita Puri,Navya N.,Trisha Banerjee / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2019

The present work focuses on enhancing the understanding of Optimism Attitude Model (OAM) in the management of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. Doing therapeutic interventions with BPD is a challenging task and requires lot of therapeutic jugglery on the part of the clinicians to sustain the motivation in ensuring the regularity of such individuals for therapy. This happens as their behaviour is unpredictable due to their disorder and the rate of drop out after few sessions is very high. Also there is a tendency to be non compliant in therapy as they keep challenging the clinicians for confrontations in a therapeutic setting so that they get a valid excuse for a kingly exit. Implications for this study are immense for the mental health professionals and family members of the individuals suffering from Borderline personality disorder. The limitations and the recommendations of the study are discussed in detail for way forward.
