Ideologies, political violence, the Open Science’s redeeming potential, and ethics

Author(s): Cătălin Mamali / Language(s): English Issue: 51/2023

The analysis started as a review inspired by a few excellent studies focused on ideologies nurturing political violence, on right wing, left wing, and religious extremism, and on Open Science. The range of the themes is wide. Nonetheless across these themes are series of questions that seems to be more connected than is usually recognized. First political violence, especially when it is comprehensive and enduring, some times over one hundred years, is inspired, supported, justified and guided by ideologies that claim to be based in the scientific approach of social reality. The omission of the relation between the communist ideology and the political violence is a costly error. Second, as democratic institutions, laws, the affirmation of human rights and the practice of civil resistance are developing the individual and collective social actors that have violent orientation and aspire to have a positive social image resort to tacit political violence. Tacit political violence resorts to a wide variety of means such as: economic marginalization and depreciation, financial constraints, cultural repression, non-declared denial of crimes against humanity, an imposed unjust motivational balance in social relations (those in the dominant positions are satisfying mainly self-actualization needs, and those in the dominated positions the survival needs), distortion of religious and moral value, and social isolation of the targeted individuals and social categories. Within the global context of the increased importance and influence of science, and of social sciences the state of the Open Science is extremely important. There are obvious remarkable achievements in the last few decades of the trend toward Open Science. The studies strongly suggest that the responsibilities, skills and resources of the researchers and reproducibility are, among other factors, essential. Within the context of scientific network the Open Science approach rightly indicates that the major „players” of this orientation are researchers, students, faculties, universities, libraries, journals, and funders. However, there is still missing a major player: the insiders, the participants, the subjects. I consider that the process of the Open Science should be inclusive in relation to the insiders and correct the structural epistemic, social and moral asymmetry between experts and insiders. The present short analysis cannot do justice to a wide range of ideas generated by researchers mentioned in the final thank you note, but it is deeply indebted to them.

Research into possible determinants of successful ageing is continuously growing, due to the increase in the proportion of old people in the general population, as well as the important practical implications that it has. However, the role of various psychosocial factors in the process of successful ageing is still not sufficiently clarified. The main goal of this study was to examine the contribution of a group of psychosocial factors (optimism, resilience, generativity, adaptation to the ageing process, social support and the frequency of social contacts) to successful ageing. The twofactor model of Pruchno et al. (2010) was used to measure the concept of successful ageing. The model includes the subjective and objective components of successful ageing. The research data were collected on a sample of 790 elderly and old men and women aged between 65 and 98 years. The results of hierarchical regression analyses have shown that the best predictors of subjective and objective indicators of successful ageing were age and psychological traits and resources (optimism, resilience, and good adaptation to changes in the ageing process). The applied value of these results can be found in the identification of factors that contribute to successful ageing and the quality of life of older people.

GUÉRIR LE MAL D’AIMER PAR LE RIRE DANS LES TRAITÉS MÉDICO-MORAUX DE L’ÈRE BAROQUE: HILARITÉ PURGATIVE, ANTIDOTE ANECDOTIQUE, RIS PHILOSOPHIQUE

Author(s): Alexandra GORICHON-HERREN / Language(s): French Issue: 35/2023

In early modern medical treatises, both laughter and tears are responses to lovesickness. These strong emotional reactions are conceptualized as a cathartic therapy, especially laughter. In spite of its power of seduction and its representation as devil’s tricks, laughter proves its therapeutic efficacy. Healing laughter appeases and puts insane love in perspective. It purges body and soul by eliminating the bad humors. Therapeutic laughter is based on therapeutic coitus. This therapy evacuates the retained seed in danger of becoming suffocating vapors impacting the brain. With this mind, laughter, located in the lower abdomen by ancient medicine, increases the body temperature and shakes the entire body to purify the blood. Such somatic tremor finds its metaphorical extension in the performativity of narration. Because of its dramaturgy, the anecdote becomes a cathartic for the soul. It allows for unusual stories and the sensation of strong emotion that frees the mind from sex drives. So, the anecdote is an antidote. It gives the result that medical speech, artefact of practicing ataraxia, uses irony in order to be wiser.

Kritičko mišljenje, znanje i mentalno zdravlje

Author(s): Marina Novina / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 02/170/2023

Critical thinking is important for each individual and for society: in the context of gaining knowledge, using the obtained knowledge, and in the context of preserving mental health. This makes it clear that the issue of critical thinking is complex and should be viewed multi-dimensionally and interdisciplinary. Therefore, this research (1) establishes the fundamental characteristics of critical thinking, that is, it talks about the nature of critical thinking. Then, (2) it explores the possibilities or the so-called strategies for the development of critical thinking, and (3) looks at the development of critical thinking in relation to the real aspects of human development. The aim of this paper is to help conceptually resolve controversial issues that concern the nature of critical thinking and its development to, in the end, improve the level of asset and use of obtained knowledge, and to improve the preservation of the mental health of individuals and communities.

Samoubojstvo iz vjerskih razloga i kao čin heroizma. Analiza samoubojstva u Masadi te samoubojstva za vrijeme holokausta prema rabinskoj literaturi

Author(s): Kotel Dadon / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 4/2023

In this article, the author analyzes and discusses the attitude of Judaism towards suicides committed for religious reasons, sometimes motivated by heroism. The article starts with an introduction, followed by a general overview of attitudes from Jewish laws towards suicides committed for the sanctification of God’s Name. The central part of the article consists of an analysis of the collective suicide committed by zealots at Masada and the attitude of Judaism towards various suicide attempts during the Holocaust. In his research, the author uses sources from Jewish laws (halacha) to examine the appropriate attitudes towards these cases and to consider the practical implications of such cases on people today. Many sources of rabbinic literature used in this article, from Talmudic times to modern times, have been translated by the author from Hebrew and Aramaic into Croatian for the first time.

Crossroads of Leadership, Ethics, Higher Education, and Worldviews

Author(s): Bert Meeuwsen / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Strategic leadership deals with, for example, ethical dilemmas. The article addresses differing worldviews in relation to decolonising the curriculum, and how to assist cross-cultural professionals’ behavioural learning. Within pedagogics, critical thinking, based on normative rationales, allowing educational interventions, or concepts, other than empirically proven only is revealed. The common denominator of worldviews appears to be virtues. Descriptions of virtues need translation to touch on professionals. A practical intervention is introduced.

НЕВРО-ОБРАЗНО ИЗСЛЕДВАНЕ „РИСКОВИ ШОФЬОРИ“ – ПОТЕНЦИАЛНИТЕ УБИЙЦИ НА ПЪТЯ

Author(s): Boyan Ivanchev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2024

Scientific and technological progress implies the strengthening of their interdisciplinarity, spillover, and upgrading of their knowledge. It is therefore only natural that cognitive and neurobiological sciences, behavioral finance, computer science, neuroeconomics, and neuromarketing are interrelated scientific fields. All these scientific fields study the complex interrelationships between brain-human behavior – and decision-making processes. Their basic interrelation stems from the shared aspiration and goal – to understand and better explain the human cognitive processes and neuronal mechanisms that are the basis of our decisions. Regardless of whether these decisions are in the economic or in the non economic context and environment, regardless of whether they are conscious or subconscious. For this reason, the article presents a neuroimaging study of “risky drivers” that aims to improve our understanding of a specific type of driving behavior.

Aktywność społeczna jako element kształtowania tożsamości terytorialnej na przykładzie obszarów wiejskich województwa wielkopolskiego

Author(s): Iwona Józefowicz,Hanna Michniewicz-Ankiersztajn / Language(s): Polish Issue: 66/2023

Territorial identity is a phenomenon that can be considered on many levels. It is assumed that, geographically, it is treated as the occurrence of interpersonal or social contacts that are assigned to specific spaces. Identity is therefore measured by the degree of participation of the local community in the social and cultural life of the area. The aim of this study is to characterise the social activity of the inhabitants of rural areas of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship in the field of culture as a factor in building territorial identity. A set of formal characteristics defining social networks in rural areas was selected from the data available in the LDB and analysed spatially. In addition, an indicator method based on Perkal’s model was used.As a result of the study, no direct relationship was found between the functional type of the rural municipality and participation in culture, although the values of the synthetic indicator make it pos-sible to note that in areas with typically agricultural functions the cultural activity of the inhabitants is relatively high. Higher values of the cultural participation indicator are also recorded in proximity to cities, in municipalities with a residential function. In spatial terms, it can be concluded that the highest level of territorial identity is characteristic for inhabitants of municipalities located in periph-eral zones of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship and rural municipalities with dominant extensive agriculture located in the east of the voivodeship.

The Nose of Hate

The Nose of Hate

Author(s): Chantal Jaquet / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The paper analyses the olfactory figures of hate and the various kinds of discrimination based on smell. It shows how figures of hate express themselves in the olfactory form of rejecting the other who stinks. All of the categories considered to be contemptible or inferior are olfactorily devalued. The paper examines successively the nose of anti-Semitism and racism, the nose of homophobia and sexism, the olfactory social discriminations, and the fiction of the stinking enemy. One may ask why this theme of the other’s bad smell so thoroughly permeates the discourses of rejection. One of the reasons is doubtlessly related to the uncontrollable nature of smell, which invades space and intimacy, and betrays your identity. Eyes can be turned away or be deceived, but the nose knows. It is supposed to sniff out otherness and perceive invisible differences despite all efforts to hide them.

What Differentiates the Ethnic Tolerance of Czech University Students? The Role of Field of Study, Family Background, Gender and Friendship

What Differentiates the Ethnic Tolerance of Czech University Students? The Role of Field of Study, Family Background, Gender and Friendship

Author(s): Dan Ryšavý,Pavlína Hrabalová,Patrik Polášek / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

Working in the context of a rather ethnically homogeneous country, this study examines what differentiates the social distance of university students towards Arab, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Roma populations. The hitherto neglected effect of the field of study is also of special concern. The authors analysed the results of a large online survey of 3,912 Palacký University students in the Czech Republic. Inspired by Bogardus’s social distance scale, we ascertained a significantly greater acceptability of Ukrainians and Vietnamese, on the one hand, and a higher distance towards Arabs and the Roma, on the other hand. Neither the liberalising influence of higher education nor the increased number of students in tertiary education affected the level of ethnic tolerance. With the exception of attitudes towards Roma people, male students and students whose mothers graduated from high school expressed a lower social distance. The research confirmed the contact theory, including the secondary transfer effect hypothesis. Even when controlling for other variables, students in the humanities and social sciences expressed the highest degree of ethnic tolerance. The question remains as to whether greater social distance among health science students and physical culture can contribute to the reproduction of prejudices in the field of health services or leisure sports activities.

Исследование изменений в преобладающих психических состояниях у студентов с различным уровнем академической успеваемости

Исследование изменений в преобладающих психических состояниях у студентов с различным уровнем академической успеваемости

Author(s): Irina Valerevna Kazakova,Tatyana Mihailovna Tikholaz,Elena Alexandrovna Sarf,Lyudmila Vladimirovna Bel’skaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2024

Introduction. The difficulties of the adaptation period increase the level of anxiety and psychological stress in students and negatively affect academic performance of first-year students. Despite the fact that recent studies have identified a wide range of conceptually different correlates of academic success, the problem of mental states of first-year students in the context of assessing their learning outcomes remains insufficiently studied in theoretical and empirical terms. Therefore, the problem of identifying a risk group for academic underachievement and maintaining the student population does not lose its relevance. The purpose of the study is to identify students’ mental states determining levels of academic performance. Materials and Methods. In order to identify the characteristics of students’ mental states, mental states were assessed at psychophysiological, psychological and socio-psychological levels. The authors used the following methods: Lemur-Tessier-Fillion ‘Psychological Stress Scale PSM-25’ adapted by N.E. Vodopyanova (2009), PSM-25 scale, method for determining neuropsychic stability, risk of maladaptation in stress ‘Forecast-2’ (V. Yu. Rybnikov), reactive (situational) and personal anxiety scale (Ch. D. Spielberger, 1973), adapted by Yu.L. Khanin, (1978), L.V. Kulikova’s methods for identifying the dominant and current states, methods for evaluating socio-psychological adaptation by K. Rogers, R. Diamond, (1954), adapted by T. V. Snegireva (1987) and by A. K. Osnitsky. The study involved 56 1st year full-time students of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics, Physics and Technology at Omsk State Pedagogical University. Results. The authors identified scales of methods for mental states assessment: ‘tone’, ‘activation-deactivation’, ‘situational anxiety’, ‘psychological stress’, which revealed statistically significant changes in students demonstrating different levels of academic performance. The authors revealed differences in prevailing mental states in students with different academic performance. Conclusions. The mental states of students identified in this study can be used in designing a programme of socio-psychological support for first-year students aimed at identifying the risks of maladjustment and a decrease in academic performance. Limitations. Limitations of the study include a small sample of students of one faculty and onetime use. It is necessary to check the possibility of extending the hypothesis to students of other faculties.

Gençlerde Dikkatli Karar Verme, Duygusal Zeka ve Sosyo-Demografik Değişkenler Arası İlişkiler

Author(s): Arkun Tatar,Didem Ayhan / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 04/2023

This study aims to examine the effect of emotional intelligence and the way of thinking that considers emotions in vigilant decision-making in the young. The effects of socio-demographic variables on vigilant decision-making were also tested in the study. A total of 556 young people, between the ages of 18-29 participated in the study. Vigilant decision-making was evaluated with the Vigilance Decision-Making Styles sub-dimension of the Melbourne DecisionMaking Questionnaire, and the thinking style that considers emotions was evaluated with the revised Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale subdimensions. By using the Vigilance Decision-Making Styles sub-dimension, two groups with a low and a high level of vigilant decision-making were formed. Then, multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine whether it distinguished these two groups. The multivariate logistic regression analysis model established according to the results explains 4.0% of the total variance and the overall accuracy in classifying the groups is 57.0%. The Optimism / Mood Regulation sub-dimension and the age variable were determined as predictors of being into one of the low and high levels of vigilant decision-making.

Marifetullah’ın Vücûbiyetine İlişkin Yaklaşımlara İnsanın Psikolojik, Genetik ve Nörobiyolojik Doğası Bağlamında Bir Çözümleme

Author(s): Seyithan Can / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2023

Discussions on the concept of Marifatullah as the foundation of belief hold a significant place in theology. There are different opinions among schools of theology regarding whether those who do not receive divine messages must know God. The majority of scholars belonging to the Mu'tazila and Māturīdī schools, including Imam Māturīdī, state that human beings must know God. Although al-Ashʿarī accepts that the most prominent obligatory duties are the methods of reasoning that lead to marifatullah, he states that responsibility in this matter is formed by transmission. However, we can say that whether the human mind is sufficient to reach the knowledge of God, the method of reasoning has reached a different dimension today from the sciences of psychology, genetics, and neurobiology. This study explored whether individuals can achieve marifatullah from a holistic perspective. Whether human beings can be held responsible for this issue has been evaluated through the sciences of psychology, genetics, and neurobiology, and the opinions of schools of theology on this issue have been criticized. When we think in terms of Marifatullah, we can say that man’s psychological sense of obligation to adapt to society leaves him intellectually under the influence of society. In terms of genetic determinism, human personality, behavior, and intellectual adventure are completely determined by genes. Therefore, it is impossible for men to reach marifatullah in the context of their mental abilities. From an epigenetic perspective, we see that human thought structure, behavior, and personality are formed as a result of interactions with the environment. Serious hesitation arises in this idea in terms of intellect being a source of responsibility. Humans are genetically influenced by the environment and society, and they have a suitable nature for this, revealing that their genetic structure is open to environmental influences. In terms of brain plasticity, factors such as the society, environment, and family in which people live can change their brains and enable them to live accordingly. Although life adventures appear to be within the framework of social harmony, there must also be intellectual and religious harmony within social harmony. This reinforces the idea that individuals tend to align more with the thoughts and beliefs instilled by culture given the adaptable nature of the human brain influenced by cultural factors. When the views of the schools of theology are considered considering these evaluations, it becomes clear that the Mu'tazilites and Māturīdīs' belief that the source of the wujūb of marifatullah is intellect is at a point that needs to be reconsidered in terms of human biology and psychology. Although the Asharites emphasize human beings attaining knowledge of God through intellect, their focus on prophethood indicates that a revelation offer appears more accurate concerning human nature in the context of Marifatullah.

An Investigation of Turkish EFL Teachers’ Perceptions of SocialEmotional Learning and School Climate

An Investigation of Turkish EFL Teachers’ Perceptions of SocialEmotional Learning and School Climate

Author(s): Zülal Ayar / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The issues of teacher stress, fulfillment from the teaching practices, and efficacy have been regarded as one of the keystones of teacher development. However, limited studies in the language teaching context have associated all these factors with social-emotional learning (SEL) and school climate. Moreover, particularly after the outbreak of the pandemic, studies focusing on their relations through the lens of teachers were underrepresented in the field. Thus, this research will examine the interplays between English language teachers' SEL beliefs, perceptions of school climate, and the three foregoing teacher outcomes. To that end, 111 Turkish EFL teachers affiliated with schools in diverse districts and tutoring at different education levels were incorporated into the study. After meticulous analysis, a significant difference was detected between the teachers with nearly two decades of experience and their job satisfaction. However, no significant correlations were noted either between SEL beliefs and teachers' sense of occupational stress or school climate and SEL beliefs.

The article focuses on the influence that online discussion comments have on the character of reactions made by pupils in the discussion thereafter. The research tool included an online article with discussion comments in four different versions: A) positive comments supporting the ideas of the text, B) comments questioning the information in the text, C) negative comments evoking fear, D) offensive comments primarily directed at the author of the text. The results show that pupils react differently in the discussion. There actions depend on the nature of the preceding fictional comments. Pupil comments vary in terms of the expressions and degree of media literacy and critical thinking, as well as the manifestations of positive or negative emotions.
