Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė: neįgalaus kūno asmens savivokos formavimosi įtampa

Author(s): Aistė Birgerytė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 6/2006

The paper presents an interpretation of the autobiographic writings of Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė, a prominent Lithuanian female writer and a cultural character of the late 1890s and early 1900s. The paper analyses why the disabled female writer had never put any stress on her illness in public (in her childhood she had a twisted spine and stayed a “hunchback” for the rest of her life, had a week nervous system, later had a softened knee-joint and barely could walk, and at the end of her life, she hardly could see and hear). Rather opposite, she identified herself with straight positive views – aspiring “to work for the welfare of the public”, “to disregard private interests” – and even ignored her private experience altogether. On the foundation of the contemporary cultural theories of disability (Simi Linton, Rosemarie Garland Thomson, Lennard J. Davis), the paper aims to reveal the formation of Bitë’s dual rhetorics which uncovers the history of the writer’s identity and the dramatism of her eternal existence “between”. From the point of view of the disability studies, the paper looks into the life of the writer’s parents’ family, which largely shaped Bitë’s consciousness and predetermined her choices. The paper investigates the link between the Bitë’s family philanthropic ideology and personal circumstances (in addition to Gabrielë, there were four other sick children, in Petkevièiai family); the writer’s parents’ attitude towards their daughter’s disability (lameness was not interpreted negatively, it was generally ignored); the father’s arguments not to allow the disabled daughter to pursue higher education. The paper also discusses the issue of the positive outlook on different nations, languages, cultures and gender and reserved opinions about disability that existed in Petkevièiai family. The paper concludes that the background of the writer’s parents’ family, discussed from the point of view of the cultural disability studies, essentially shaped Bitë’s consciousness, her self-identity, personal choices and the public expression of her views.

The article introduces the first autobiography of the disabled in the 20th century Lithuanian literature – the memoirs of Pranas Daunys – On the Roads of Misery / Memories from the Battles for Independence and the Life of the Blind. In the context of the disability body studies, the article discusses different levels in the formation of the corporal identity of the blind person. The study emphasizes the importance of cultural space to the identity of the blind, which is related to the Braille. The article explains the integrity dimension of the blind person’s identity, which mergers different experiences of personal life (the experience of eye trauma during the war and the memories of patriotic feelings), which are equally important to the personal identity. The research deals with the corporal and sensual self-perception of the blind, which is closely related to the social and public emancipation, changing the lines of national identity.

Autism, schizofrenie, ADHD. Perspective convergente

Autism, schizofrenie, ADHD. Perspective convergente

Author(s): Bogdana Susana Miclea / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2021

Over time, continuous efforts have been made to clarify and circumscribe diagnoses of autism, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The diagnostic split between the 3 disorders dominated psychiatry after the 80s, being still used and recognized as such by the diagnostic manuals. Recently a shift and flexibility of the psychiatric paradigm has been noticed. The categorical perspective on mental illness is gradually complemented by the dimensional one. In the last decade, research in the field of neuroscience and psychology has brought evidence in favor of a partial overlap between ADHD, autism and schizophrenia. The hypothesis of a partial overlap can also be supported by non-medical or psychological theorizations, related to common deficits of symbolic structuring of the psyche in achieving a coherent representation of the world and of one's own person.

Smisao i značaj motivacije iz islamske perspektive

Smisao i značaj motivacije iz islamske perspektive

Author(s): Zuhdija Hasanović,Adnan Srebrenica / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 24/2020

In postmodern times, after having first alienated ourselves from God and then from everything else, we have completely disrupted the existing value system, believing that this technological world can offer us precisely everything. In this sense, we also perceive and reduce man to a machine that brings us profit. We have forgotten all other human dimensions, values, possibilities, potentials, the goal of life. One of the consequences of such a conception of the world and man is the dominant apathy and lack of motivation that are present in people of all ages and both sexes. Pupils and students reluctantly approach the performance of their duties and are generally satisfied with a passing grade. Employees work only as much as they have to, many of them not even that much, guided by the rule that “they can’t be paid as little as they can do.” After years of research, dissapointed because their results are being ignored, scientists and researchers ask themselves: “Why all this?!” Due to all this, it is even more important to talk about motivation, its meaning and significance and ways to motivate and encourage humans to activate all their potentials in order to achieve success.

Relationship between emotional reactivity to visual stimuli and basic personality traits

Relationship between emotional reactivity to visual stimuli and basic personality traits

Author(s): Anđela Šoškić,Boris Đurović,Goran Opačić / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

Two studies with the same goal, but different instruments, investigated the correlation between basic personality traits and electrodermal reactivity to aversive visual stimuli. Study 1 focused on the Five Factor Model traits, while in Study 2, we investigated the HEXACO model, and an additional trait, Disintegration. In Study 1, emotional reactivity was expressed using Polyscore, a composite polygraph measure in which electrodermal response (EDR) had the largest weight, and it was measured with respect to stimuli with positive, neutral, and negative valences. In Study 2, we employed several measures of EDR to stimuli with negative valence. In both experiments, Conscientiousness correlated positively with EDR to aversive stimuli. Additionally, in Study 2, there was a negative correlation between Disintegration and EDR to aversive stimuli. Other traits were not related to EDR to aversive stimuli, and, in Study 1, we found no relationship between personality traits and reactivity to stimuli with positive or neutral valence.

The Mode of Trust and Experience of Stress in Customs Officers in Ukraine

Author(s): Virna Zhanna,Olha Lazorko,Liudmyla Malimon / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2021

The article presents the author’s position of studying organizational trust in customs service and specific experience of workplace stress that influences its formation. The study sample involved 77 customs officers in the following categories of customs personnel: customs inspectors and passenger inspectors. The scientific value of this study lies in establishing the empirical referents of the relationship between organizational trust and relief of organizational stress in customs officers at different organizational levels. The article proves that the empirical referents of the interrelation of organizational trust and experience of workplace stress in the customs group 3 are at the mezzo-level of organizational trust (concern from management, supported by indicators of organizational culture in the field of communication and management) and at the micro-level (increasing organizational stress in the forms of activity and productivity, the flexibility of behaviour, acceptance of others’ values and indicators of job satisfaction due to the expressed emotional commitment of these employees to their organization). The practical value of the obtained results allows one to understand the nature and the impact of organizational stress and the level of organizational trust on the effectiveness of customs officers’ professional activities. It also makes it possible to develop a further programme of psychological support for this professional group to improve psychological safety and well-being in the workplace.

Rejection sensitivity and loneliness are some of the psychological factors that negatively affect people’s lives. The literature has revealed evidence that rejection sensitivity may be associated with loneliness. The purpose of this study was to examine the possible mediating roles of vulnerable narcissism, grandiose narcissism, and self-esteem in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and loneliness. The research sample consisted of 296 [231 (78%) women, 63 (21.3%) men] university students in İstanbul, whose ages are between 18 and 28 years. Socio-demographic Information Form, Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire, Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and UCLA Loneliness Scale were used for the data collection. The findings of the analyses revealed that vulnerable narcissism, grandiose narcissism, and self-esteem significantly predict loneliness. When the serial mediation models were tested, it was found that grandiose narcissism and self-esteem in the first model, and vulnerable narcissism, and self-esteem in the second model had mediating roles respectively in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and loneliness. Research findings are discussed in the light of the literature, and the limitations of the study and its contributions to clinical practice and suggestions for future research are presented.

POGLEDI NA IDENTITET U KRETANJU OD „MENE“ DO „NAS“ I OD „JESTE“ KA „TREBA“

POGLEDI NA IDENTITET U KRETANJU OD „MENE“ DO „NAS“ I OD „JESTE“ KA „TREBA“

Author(s): Melisa Zukić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 19/2021

The paper presents sociological views on identity from terminological ambiguity to theoretical and functional openness in accordance with the needs of the individual and the society that is changing and evolving. From an interactionist point of view, identity is formed through communication and action; in the structuralist sense, it represents the imprint of social structure, while the reflexive hypothesis assumes the self-production of identity through rational action. According to the formative hypothesis identity is a constant renewal of life as opposed to forms of materialized culture. Late modernity is characterized by the delegitimization of diversity factors (gender, religion, and social status). Identity policies are presented by a weak identity theory and a strong identity theory through the strengthening of the dominant identity or through the search for a new identity. A strong identity theory is an anchored identity based on rigid identity sequences and marked by xenophobia and intolerance. Protecting identity through isolation, while avoiding comparison with others in communicative interaction, leads to an anchored identity which faces difficulties while coping with the changes in a developing society, indicating that the time of an anchored identity is over. Understanding identity as an unfinished process indicates an identity crisis that does not necessarily have to be shock, frustration, and a sense of hopelessness but may be a crisis of identity growth and modification. The process of identification and emergence of identity as a constant transformation can be presented as a continuum of constant adaptation, modification, and growth, leading to new levels / layers / circles of identity and opportunities for the continuation of the identity development process.

Relationships between developmental feedback, intrinsic motivation, and creative personality and performance

Relationships between developmental feedback, intrinsic motivation, and creative personality and performance

Author(s): Weilin Su,Bei Lyu,Manuel London / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Developmental feedback can motivate employees to take chances and be more creative, at least for employees who interpret feedback as support for new ideas. Drawing on cognitive evaluation theory, we examined relationships between developmental feedback, intrinsic motivation, creative personality (e.g., people who describe themselves as inventive and confident rather than cautious and conservative), and creative performance. We predicted that developmental feedback would contribute to employees’ intrinsic motivation and further improve their creative performance, especially those who were high in creative personality. The sample included 215 Chinese employees and their direct supervisors from a big science and technology corporation in Beijing, China. Employees’ perceptions of developmental feedback from their supervisor were positively related to employees’ ratings of their intrinsic motivation and supervisors’ ratings of employees’ creative performance. Also, intrinsic motivation of employees mediated the relationship between developmental feedback and their creative performance. These relationships were stronger for employees with a highly creative personality.

Извънредност и евтаназия

Author(s): Albena Stambolova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 54/2021

The article compares the state of emergency and euthanasia. An answer is sought to the question of whether euthanasia is a state of emergency and whether it is possible without it. The first part focuses on the difference between thinking and experiencing death. The second considers the state of emergency as the abolition of public orders governing both society and the life of the individual. The question arises about the need for time to realize the cultural symbolizations necessary for the integration of new social practices. The third examines euthanasia from the point of view of its emergency and the extent to which it implies personal or collective responsibility. In conclusion, the view is presented that the state of emergency, which arose as a community decision, is always experienced as a personal and specific case in the dynamics of the questions When and Whether it should occur.

Sličan se sličnom raduje ili se suprotnosti privlače

Sličan se sličnom raduje ili se suprotnosti privlače

Author(s): Anđela Keljanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2021

Despite the time when the body-positive concept challenges the ways in which the media and society present the image of the “ideal body”, one gets the impression that the most valuable trait is physical appearance. Those who dictate today’s standards are physically attractive, attractive, popular, and thus more desirable as potential partners. People, regardless of their own attractiveness, tend to choose attractive partners. However, the matching hypothesis assumes that individuals choose partners with a similar level of attraction. In this review, we will see if choosing a partner from the “same league” increases our chances of a successful outcome. One of the conclusions of the initial research of the matching hypothesis is that pure physical attractiveness is the most important determinant of likeability. Although, we know of couples who are not equally physically attractive, and even then, one’s social desirability other than physical attractiveness can be offset by personability and material status. The tendency to prefer highly attractive partners weakens when moderating factors are present that include the low availability of attractive potential partners in the general population and predict the possibility of rejection. The matching hypothesis has not been empirically confirmed and many aspects have not been tested. Therefore, we present a new theory based on the assumption that there is a difference in the extent to which a gender values physical attractiveness, implying that men can easily compensate for the deficit in physical attractiveness with other desirable characteristics such as high socioeconomic status. Although it is basically designed to explain and predict different patterns of behavior when choosing a partner, it is possible to generalize to other dimensions of desirability.

Author(s): Piotr Janik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2020

Stein’s theory of empathy lies at the intersection of the phenomenological findings of E. Husserl and M. Scheler. By presenting the issue of “empathy” in a broader framework, including intentionality, the originality of experience, the issue of personality and the individual identity, as well as the so-called world of values, namely the culture, I argue for a dynamic, process-oriented concept of dealing with feelings, namely diapathy.

Darboholizmas ir priklausomybė nuo darbo: motyvacinių veiksnių skirtumai

Author(s): Modesta Morkevičiūtė,Auksė Endriulaitienė / Language(s): Lithuanian Issue: 2/2021

Over the past decades, workaholism has received increasing attention from researchers. Despite a growing interest, no single definition or conceptualization of workaholism has emerged. The meaning of workaholism is arguably ambiguous and many different researchers use different definitions of what it is to be a workaholic (Griffiths & Karanika-Murray, 2012). Literature lacks consensus on how workaholism should be conceptualized and measured; the existing theoretical models offer conflicting ideas regarding the composition of the workaholism construct (Clark et al., 2020). Originally, the word “workaholism” was a take on working too hard in an alcoholic-like manner and was intended to connate all the problems that addiction brought (Oates, 1968). Thus, the primary discussion developes around two forms of excessive work (workaholism and work addiction). Both of them have often been used interchangeably in literature. However, more recently, part of the scientific debate has pointed up the opportunities to explore the differences between the two. In fact, even though workaholism and work addiction overlap at some point, some components of their meaning might differ (Griffiths et al., 2018). It was proposed by some authors that work addiction was a psychological construct, whereas workaholism was a more generic term indicating everyday work-related behavior rather than pathology (Clark et al., 2020; Griffiths et al., 2018). It is possible to disentangle the differences between workaholism and work addiction by paying attention not only to their composition but also to the factors determining them. Keeping in mind the proposed differences of workaholism and work addiction, each of these phenomena should be more or less predicted by different motivational aspects. However, conclusions about different motivational origins of workaholism and work addiction are currently impossible, as the existing studies do not differentiate between the correlates of both of these phenomena. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the differences in motivational factors predicting workaholism and work addiction. A total of 964 Lithuanian employees participated in a study. The levels of workaholism were measured using a short version of the scale proposed by Schaufeli et al. (2009) (DUWAS-10). Work addiction was assessed with the help of Bergen work addiction scale (Andreassen et al., 2012). Work motivation was measured using work extrinsic and intrinsic motivation scale (Tremblay et al., 2009). Both hypotheses that were tested in a study were partially supported. When conducting a regression analysis it was found that intrinsic work motivation, as well as one regulatory type of extrinsic work motivation (introjected regulation), were the factors predicting workaholism. Three regulatory types of extrinsic work motivation (external, introjected, integrated regulations) were the factors predicting work addiction. Intrinsic work motivation was not a significant factor predicting work addiction. Our results correspond to the idea that the etiologic pathway to work addiction may differ from that leading to workaholism and provides some support for viewing these constructs as separate ones.

Contemporary Love - Between Reality and Illusion

Contemporary Love - Between Reality and Illusion

Author(s): Iulian Apostu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The experience of falling in love is one of the most beautiful moments of life, and surely each of us has lived it at least once in our life. The joy of the moment, the natural awkwardness of that period, the oversized enthusiasm, the dreams, the specific ideals, etc. they are unmistakable. Researchers in the field of social and humanistic sciences recognize that of all forms of interpersonal relationships, love raises the biggest problems in the way of investigative intentions, precisely because of its subjective nature, the intimacy it implies and hence, the technical difficulties of sociological or psychological measurement. There is, however, a difference between falling in love and love, and the confusion of the two dimensions can make the difference between love, as a real feeling, and its illusion. In the early stages of falling in love, before many confirmations and validations, each partner tends to charge the other with the projection of their own ideals. The initial state of bliss sometimes creates the dose of optimism that allows the individual to design their relationship according to their own desires and dreams, but only the concrete experience of the functionality of the two can highlight the degree of happiness or its illusion. The study aims to analyze the concept of love and infatuation in this double projection of the illusion of love.

Measuring Video Game Dedication: The Development and Validation of Casual Hardcore Assortment Scale

Author(s): Cosmin Ghețău / Language(s): English Issue: 42/2022

Gaming literature has noticed for a long-time the existence of two distinct types of video game players. In the current paper, we are proposing a scale that aims to differentiate gamers between two types: hardcore and casual. Casual players invest limited time and resources in video games and are not taking the games too seriously. Their counterparts, hardcore gamers, do the opposite, such as investing substantial monetary and emotional resources in video games, personalizing their private objects in line with their hobbies, spending more in-game time, and taking games more seriously. Based on the characteristics mentioned above, we propose in this paper a 5-item scale called Casual Hardcore Assortment Scale (CHG). The items of the scale look at the following characteristics that distinguish the hardcore player: monetary investments, cultural investments, emotional investments, and time spent in the game. The answers are on a Likert scale ranging from 1 to 5, a higher score indicating a more pronounced presence of the previously mentioned characteristics. That would suggest a high match of the respondent in the typology of the hardcore player. The scale has been tested on a sample of 492 respondents and it showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = .75).
