The Extent and Distribution of Gambling-Related Harms and the Prevention Paradox in a British Population Survey

Author(s): Natale Canale,Alessio Vieno,Mark D. Griffiths / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2016

To examine whether the “prevention paradox” applies to British individuals in relation to gambling-related harm. Methods: Data were derived from 7,756 individuals participating in the British Gambling Prevalence Survey 2010, a comprehensive interview-based survey conducted in Great Britain between November 2009 and May 2010. Gambling-related harm was assessed using an adapted version of the DSM-IV Pathological Gambling criteria. The previous year’s prevalence of problem gamblers was examined using the Problem Gambling Severity Index. Gambling involvement was measured by gambling frequency and gambling participation (gambling volume as expressed by time and money spent gambling). Results: The prevalence rates for past-year gambling harms were dependence harm (16.4%), social harm (2.2%), and chasing losses (7.9%). Gambling-related harms were distributed across low- to moderate-risk gamblers (and not limited to just problem gamblers) and were reported by the majority of gamblers who were non-high time and spend regular gamblers than high time and spend regular gamblers. Conclusions: The prevention paradox is a promising way of examining gambling-related harm. This suggests that prevention of gambling might need to consider the population approach to minimizing gambling harm.

Researches on gender differences considering the self-evaluation of personal identity and behavior in social conflicts have shown that there is a gender discrimination to the advantage of a better male self-evaluation on the factor of physical identity and a female tendency to cooperate in a conflict. This research has been done on a stratified group sample of 783 high-schoo students in the area of the cities of Rijeka and Opatija. By a discriminative analysis the differences between the male and female subjects have been established regarding the self-evaluation of the value of personal identity according to Osgoods semantic differential. 4 statistically significant discriminative function has been gained, described by the variables of security, streng velocity and power which the boys have a positive relationship to and the girls a negative one. Through questionnaire on t te attitudes on some characteristics of conflicts and behavior in a conflict a discriminative function has been gained which is described by variables of not approving the use of physical force and representing dialogue in a conflict. It has been shown that the boys have a negative relationship to such a function and the girls a positive one. These problems should be additionally researched although the results implicate the need to encourage self-esteem at girls and the need to enable socially acceptable forms of competition for boys. It has been suggested to schools to encourage young people to be socially involved in the local community and to organize different sports competitions

Bilinçli Farkındalığın Psikolojik İyi Oluş Üzerindeki Etkisi: Boş Zamanda Can Sıkıntısının Aracılık Rolü

Author(s): Utku Işık,Ömür F. KARAKULLUKÇU,Hamdi Alper Güngörmüş / Language(s): Turkish Issue: S1/2020

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and mediation of boredom in leisure time in the effect of conscious awareness on psychological well-being among secondary school students. The research group of the study consisted of 192 students with an average age of Mage = 16.32 +/- 0.91 who studied at secondary education institutions in Manisa. Participants answered the "Psychological Well-Being Scale," "Conscious Awareness Scale," and "Boredom in Leisure Scale." In the study, the effect of conscious awareness on psychological well-being was tested with Simple Linear Regression Analysis. Baron and Kenny's method was used as the mediating effect of boredom. To determine how effective the mediated role, bootstrap confidence interval values were used. According to the analyzes, it was seen that conscious awareness had a significant effect on psychological well-being (β =, 4204; F(1,190) = 15,507; p <0.05). Both the competence sub-dimension and the motivation sub-dimension of the Leisure Boredom Scale were included as a mediator variable, the power of the relationship between conscious awareness and psychological well-being was decreased. In other words, mediator variables decreased the power of the effect. Bootstrap confidence intervals were checked to determine whether the indirect effect was significant. It was seen that bootstrap confidence intervals were below and above zero in both sub-dimensions and sub-dimensions of boredom scale have a partial mediating effect. As a result, conscious awareness positively affects psychological well-being. However, among students suffering from boredom in their leisure time, this effect tends to decrease. There was a decrease in the participants' psychological well-being, who were bored in their leisure time. Although conscious awareness effect on psychological well-being, the power of the effect decreases.

ROLUL STĂRII PSIHOLOGICE DE BINE ÎN PROFILAXIA ARDERII PROFESIONALE

ROLUL STĂRII PSIHOLOGICE DE BINE ÎN PROFILAXIA ARDERII PROFESIONALE

Author(s): Svetlana RUSNAC,Irina Bostan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2020

The hypothesis was verified in the present research: professional burning can be determined by certain cognitive-emotional predispositions of personality, the positive subjective attitude towards life, self and the socio-professional environment, characteristic of the psychological state of well being, presenting a securing factor. The burnout syndrome, caused by tension and emotional exhaustion, affects, mostly, the person's health. The burning process affects the feeling of happiness and decreases the level of autonomy, while, at the same time, the general satisfaction of life remains constant and the purpose and meaning of life are preserved. Thus, the creation of conditions favorable to work, the possibilities for the ones development, as well as his involvement in the deceiving process can serve as a tool for reducing the level of professional bournout. At the same time, satisfying professional needs and increasing the level of professional satisfaction influences considerably the state of well-being. Harmony between all aspects of a person's life leads to job satisfaction and increased psychological well-being, thus reducing the risk of unbearable factors in the workplace leading to burnout, but the risk is not ruled out that the person, however, might go through some stages of burnout, such as tension, emotional exhaustion. We can conclude that the fixed organization of the subordination criteria, the stable division of service obligations, the establishment of the level of responsibility according to the professional hierarchy, reduces the employee's tension and at the same time decreases the risk of professional burnout. While the liberal administration regime, when the employee is charged with the need to adapt decisions, and to take responsibility without feeling support and supervision from the superior, leads to a high level of professional burnout and exhaustion, it is also in these conditions that the material motivation factors of the employee become less important, the level of tension exceeding the limits

ORIGINILE ŞI EVOLUŢIA FORMELOR DE PSIHOTERAPIE

Author(s): Liliana ENACHESCU / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2020

Psychotherapy, a branch of psychology, has its cultural origins in the empirical practices of the mystico-magical nature of shamanism. It is based on the mechanism of suggestive induction, transfer and catharsis. Later the therapy of spiritual suffering/soul torment, labelled as demoniac possession, is taken over by the Church under the form of exorcism. The third stage of the psychotherapy history is given by its “medicalization” through the methods of hypnosis, suggestion therapy and, finally, of psychotherapy. In this process, one can observe a historic continuity –in various forms –of the ideas about man and suffering, as well as a continutyof the psychotherapy methods/ techniques.

Author(s): Almira Isić-Imamović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 18/2020

The aim of the paper was to present five models explaining the structure of child temperament, to point to the determinants of child temperament as well as the methods and the importance of determining characteristics of child temperament types. The paper describes five models or theoretical approaches explaining the structure of child temperament, namely the models devised by Thomas and Chess (1950), Buss and Plomin (1984, 1986), Rothbart (1981), Campos et al. (1983), and by Kagan (1994). The characteristics of child temperament types are determined based on the assessment done by parents, educators or teachers by the means of a questionnaire or a structured interview, or by observation and physiological assessment in the natural environment (home or kindergarten) and in a laboratory. Questionnaires adapted to the aforementioned models and the age of children are most frequently used nowadays.

PSIHOSOCIJALNE POSLJEDICE KRIZA

Author(s): Irmelina Karić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 2/2020

Crises are an integral part of life and happen to individuals, families, groups and organizations, nations. A person who has lived in the belief of safety and protection becomes insecure, has a feeling that he is constantly exposed to danger and is afraid of new traumatic events. Large-scale catastrophes and crisis events are particularly threatening precisely because they affect all the systems that surround an individual at the same time. Therefore, the consequences of disasters are reflected in the entire life of the individual, the community and often society as a whole. When a large-scale crisis occurs, of course, the priority is to mitigate its effects on security (saving lives, caring for the injured, protecting property, meeting basic needs). However, psychosocial needs, such as caring for oneself and one's loved ones about the future, disturbing physical, emotional and mental reactions that indicate that the person is not emotionally stable, but are a sign of a possible development of a mental crisis, come to the fore very quickly. on the occurrence of these reactions, their long-term consequences on mental health, and some of the effective psychological crisis interventions.
