Summary/Abstract: This article presents a relatively new therapeutic method in Croatia. This method assures efficient and stimulant therapy for persons with disabilities, and persons with difficulties in social and emotional adaptation - the method of therapeutic horseback riding. Comparing resources in the world and in Croatia, the authors give a clear preview of the development of therapeutic horseback riding and present the place this method takes among rehabilitation sciences. The authors explain terms such as hypo-therapy, medical riding, sport riding, and voltigeuring are explained. The article particularly focuses on indications and contraindications for therapeutic riding, as a starting point for any specific action. The authors openly show their own interest in the use of this method in Croatia in the section named "The horse as a teacher and as a prime mover of emotional and social intelligence development in children". In the end, the article gives an overview of volunteer work as one of the strongest pillars of this program - which entails horseback riding with persons with special needs. In the article the authors especially concentrate on clarifying this important therapeutic method, but also encourage the readers to join one of the many activities that therapeutic riding offers.
