"From medium to meaning". O propagandowych środkach wyrazu w filmie "Triumf woli" Leni Riefenstahl

Author(s): Małgorzata Laskowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2020

The main purpose of this paper is to determine the most frequently used propaganda forms of expression in the film Triumph of the Will by Leni Riefenstahl. This research target may be presented in the form of the following questions: Which propaganda forms of expression have been used in the film? Which symbols have been used to convey the message in Leni Riefenstahl’s film? The answers to these questions will be interpreted in the context of Stewart M. Hoover’s theory “from medium to meaning.” Its author paid attention to the essential question: To what extent do media convey meaning? To what extent do they give meaning to a phenomenon? Analogically, a question may be asked, with reference to Riefenstahl’s film: to what extent her film might have given meaning to the Nazi propaganda? What was the role of cinema in Adolf Hitler’s policy and in popularising his views? The article is a review paper. Its indirect goal is to draw attention to the transfer of meaning in audiovisual communication.

Anti-Ukrainian Discourse of Russian Media: Elimination Via Manipulation

Anti-Ukrainian Discourse of Russian Media: Elimination Via Manipulation

Author(s): Natalia Kravchenko / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

This article contains a multifaceted cognitive, pragmatic and verbal analysis of anti-Ukrainian discourse in the Russian media from the point of view of its eliminative features. The main argument is that the discourse-forming concepts of ‘Ukronatists’, ‘understate’ and the far peripheral concept of the ‘fraternal people’ underpins multilevel eliminative strategies and the manipulative techniques of their implementation. The article argues that the identified discourse-forming concepts correspond to the three types of the narrative modelling of events according to the scenarios ‘The Story of a Just War’ and ‘Fathers and Sons’, and based on the metaphors of ‘mental disorder’, ‘predatory, scientific abstraction’, ‘drugs/alcohol addiction’ and ‘a house for NATO’. These are used to conceptualise Ukraine and Ukraine-associated matters leading to the construction of eliminative strategies for denying Ukrainian national identity and statehood, polarisation, symbolisation based on group stigmatisation, extermination, explicit and implicit dehumanisation through animalisation, deindividualisation and impersonalisation, as well as delegitimisation and masking actions as counteraction and self-defence.

Eurasianism, Neo-Eurasianism and Anti-Ukrainianism in the Narratives of Modern Russian Propaganda

Author(s): Olena Balatska / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

This article explores the issues of information warfare during the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The information warfare against Ukraine involves a wide range of methods and techniques aimed at destabilising society, introducing appropriate changes in the public consciousness and legitimising aggression. The purpose of this article is to analyse the main narratives of Russian ideological doctrine and propaganda in the context of their significance for Ukraine. The work focuses on three main aspects: (1) the ideas of the Eurasian doctrine; (2) the main postulates of neo-Eurasianism; and (3) the narratives of modern Russian propaganda that are being promoted in relation to Ukraine. The study shows that there is a link between the Eurasian doctrine of the first half of the 20th century, neo-Eurasianism and modern propaganda that determines the changes taking place in Russian narratives.

Rus Dilbilim Ekolünde Söylem ve Metin

Rus Dilbilim Ekolünde Söylem ve Metin

Author(s): Sonnur Aktay / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 116/2023

In recent years, scientific studies on the structure and functioning of the terms discourse and text have gained momentum, and different approaches have been proposed. The multifaceted nature of the terms discourse and text sometimes leads to confusion, to the extent that in academic studies, these concepts are occasionally used interchangeably. It is important to elimination of uncertainty in scientific studies, in which respect the concepts of discourse and text, defined by different disciplines such as linguistics, textlinguistics, communicative linguistics, semantics, ethnology, pragmatics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, form similarity or difference. Although discourse research is rooted in the West, Russian studies are increasing day by day. Studies conducted through the Moscow School (V. I. Tyupa), which defines discourse as a communicative phenomenon, and the Volgograd School (N. D. Arutyunova), which sees discourse as a coherent text with extra-linguistic, pragmatic, sociocultural, psychological, etc. factors, give direction to discourse research. In this context, the theoretical definitions of the concepts of discourse and text made by Russian linguists in the light of Russian linguistic research, the points where the two terms are used interchangeably, their scope and limitations are discussed comparatively. The aim of the study is to bring the schools, linguists and the theories developed by Russian linguists on the discourse field to the Turkish literature and to reveal the communicative aspect of the concepts of discourse and text with Russian text examples. In the study, using the qualitative research method, resources on discourse in Russia were provided and a comparative analysis of academic studies was carried out.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE SECURITY OF MILITARY OPERATIONS

Author(s): Dorel DANCIU / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

In the last decade, social media and Social Network Sites have decisively changed how internal and external communication takes place in the military. One of the most important advantages of social media is the facilitation of new forms of social interaction and communication. The integration of text, images, and sounds in the same interactive communication system, accessible at any chosen moment, within a global network, fundamentally changes the character of military communication. In the context of the new types of military operations, having predominantly the characteristics of the hybrid war, the security of the operations (OPSEC) remains a critical requirement. The increasing number of military social media users from deployed areas of operations could compromise information security and missions. Building a security culture in the field of SNS use through education is an easy and almost cost-free action, for information disclosure prevention.

Following the Hero’s Memories: The Role of Memory
as a (Re)construction of the Narrative in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Following the Hero’s Memories: The Role of Memory as a (Re)construction of the Narrative in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Author(s): Esteban Vera / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This paper discusses the concept of the hero and the role of memory as an object of (re)construction of the world in the narrative of the Nintendo digital game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Through the analysis of how memory is reconstructed in Link and the characters that inhabit Hyrule, memories, historical and social memory, monuments, documents, space, and gameplay within the same digital game are also reconstructed. Testimonial memory, in turn, will help remember and construct the narrative of Link’s personal and social history by reconstructing the story. The personal experience that the player has while interacting with the game through the act of playing can build the metadiscourse between memory and narrative to understand the hero and his journey through the world. In this sense, the importance of the character Link within the game is affirmed, as he is a much more complex subject than a simple archetype within the game mechanics.

LEARNING, TALENT AND JOURNALISM. CONCERNING THE ROMANIAN JOURNALISTS FROM THE PAST

LEARNING, TALENT AND JOURNALISM. CONCERNING THE ROMANIAN JOURNALISTS FROM THE PAST

Author(s): Fănel Teodorașcu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

The journalist „endowed with the talent of writing” has always succeeded in creating out of nothing an article worthy of being published in a newspaper or in a magazine. However, in order to be a first class journalist, one needs more than „talent”. In this paper, we will aim at investigating, most of all, what was written – in the Romanian press from the past – precisely regarding the idea that a journalist needs nothing else than „the gift of writing”, so that he can successfully meet his readers’ necessities. In order to accomplish this, we read many articles published between the years 1892 and 1946. Of all the publications researched by us, we will enumerate here only the following: “Banatul”, “Neamul românesc”, “Viața românească“, “Însemnări ieșene” etc.

THE ENGLISH INFLUENCE ON THE ROMANIAN MEDIATIC LANGUAGE

THE ENGLISH INFLUENCE ON THE ROMANIAN MEDIATIC LANGUAGE

Author(s): Mihaela Mureșan / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

The appearance of Anglicisms in the Romanian language was determined by the need to designate new extralinguistic realities. Anglicization presents itself as a trend in current languages to allow the influence of English, especially in the vocabulary domain, thus manifesting as a superstratum element. There are Anglicisms used in different variants by speakers or encountered in Romanian media language with changing or fluctuating forms. Currently, we are witnessing a massive influx of Anglicisms into Romanian media language and spoken language, and some of these English words are in the process of entering the lexical fund of the Romanian language, being widely used by speakers.

MEDIATIC LANGUAGE AS A MIRROR FOR EXPLORING THE LINGUISTIC MARKET

Author(s): Mihaela Mureșan / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

Mass-media represents "a true laboratory where linguistic innovations”, and at the same time, journalistic language becomes a true technique for "exploring the linguistic market," as it is extremely conclusive, with both dynamic and varied tendencies, and great receptivity regarding linguistic innovation. In media texts, there is a massive penetration of anglicisms. The anglicisms used in Romanian media language are diverse both in terms of form, purpose, and the terminologies they belong to. Therefore, the mediatic language reflects clearly the linguistic trends of the Romanian speakers.

ON THE NEED FOR A NEW DISCOURSE OF DEMOCRACY

Author(s): Vasile Pleșca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

Libraries have already been written about the democratic decline of recent years. It is the most visible political phenomenon on a global scale, and thousands of interpretations and explanations from scholars abound. What is much less present is the watchful eye on the enemies of democracy. Their fulminant success from a political point of view hides their fragility on a social or economic level. This article shows how wrong the negative approach to democratic decline is, the shortcomings of the democratic alternative, authoritarian populism, being obvious.

Author(s): Amelia Maria Vaida / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

ENGLISH BORROWINGS IN ONLINE BANKING ADVERTISEMENTS – A NECESSITY OR A PERSUASION TOOL? A CASE STUDY ON TRANSILVANIA BANK

Author(s): Amelia Maria Vaida / Language(s): English Issue: 35/2023

At present globalization stands out as one of the main features of society. It permeates all sectors of life and one of its effects is the ubiquitous use of English borrowings. This article casts light on the reasons why English borrowings are used in online advertisements of Transylvania Bank. The study begins with a theoretical framework of the English borrowings and then it delves into the reasons why they are intentionally incorporated in the advertising texts, although the Romanian language offers alternatives for all the English terms encountered. English borrowings are preferred to the detriment of Romanian words, as they convey a sense of modernity, of prestige, of blending with contemporary times, increasing visibility and liking, ultimately having the purpose of persuasion.

THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL PROJECTIONS ON ADVERBS AND MODAL PARTICLES IN ROMANIAN AND GERMAN TABLOIDS

Author(s): Emanuela Păduraru / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 35/2023

The theoretical presentation will be followed by examples extracted from the tabloids proposed for analysis. They will include sequences of lexical-grammatical modalizers, modal adverbs (and adverbial locutions) in Romanian and modal particles in German and their role from a morphological, syntactic and pragmatic perspective. The deontic, epistemic and volitional modality points out the degree of obligation or permissiveness of the above mentioned situations which entail a non-assertive character through linguistic sequences, achieving directive-type language acts (order, exhortation).
