LITERARY TRANSLATION AS SIGNIFICATION AND COMMUNICATION

LITERARY TRANSLATION AS SIGNIFICATION AND COMMUNICATION

Author(s): Oana Florina Avornicesei / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2012

Analysing translation along the coordinates of signification and communication means putting it into a semiotic perspective. The aim of this paper is to bring together in a coherent analysis the elements which define translation both as a system of signification and as a process of communication. The two key-words, system and process, are meant to define the nature and the role of the meaning. Meaning is the stake of any act of translation: finding it in a text with a view to conveying it into another text and, beyond it, to the readers, within certain contexts. Semiotics offers the necessary analytical framework which allows the translation theoretician to regard in an integrated manner both the system of meaning creation and the process of its conveyance.

За статута на "чуждите думи" в български и чешки език

Author(s): Yordanka Trifonova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 100/2015

The study analyses and compares the interpretation of concepts „lexical borrowing“ and „loan words“ in the Bulgarian and Czech linguistic literature of XX century. It is suggested in the synchronous study of vocabulary the etymological criterion to be replaced by structural one and the traditionally inherited concept lexical borrowing – by „lexical interaction“. It is presented arguments in defence of the thesis that from a structural point of view there are more reasons the so called process of borrowing to be defined as „contact motivation“, i.e. as one of onomasiologique processes by which the new words are formed.

Investigating EFL learners’ situational and perceived interest in reading different types of texts

Investigating EFL learners’ situational and perceived interest in reading different types of texts

Author(s): Halina Chodkiewicz / Language(s): English Issue: 11/2016

This paper reports a classroom-based empirical study that aimed to establish the level of situational and perceived interest generated by EFL learners while reading three types of texts (General Comprehension, Culture Focus and Narrative texts). Situational interest was defined as comprising five Sources of Interest, that is Text Cohesion, Prior Knowledge, Engagement, Ease of Recollection, and Emotiveness. The analysis of the students’ ratings of the questionnaire statements for the particular texts has revealed the main effect of Text Type, with the highest level of the students’ interest gained for Narrative texts. The level of interest was also dependent on Sources of Interest, with the highest mean gained for Cohesion. Narrative was the type of text perceived by the students as the most interesting of the three they worked with. The results of the study showed that the role of situational and perceived interest in reading different text types needs to be adequately approached by FL specialists as a vital factor in reading and learning tasks.

Prosodic Encoding of Phrasal Prominence and Information Structure in a Second Language: When Bulgarian and German Prosody meet

Author(s): Bistra Andreeva / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

This research describes the production of prosodic cues to mark information structure in Bulgarian and German. It compares speech by native (L1) and second language (L2) speakers and investigates prosodic transfer from the L1 to the L2. The results confirm that Bulgarian and German natives use different prosodic cues to mark information status. Comparison of Bulgarian L1 and L2 data reveals that these prosodic differences lead to transfer from the L1 to the L2. To some degree, pitch accents used to mark focus appear to be transferred from the L2 to the L1 as well.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN INTERCULTURAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE PRACTITIONER

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN INTERCULTURAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE PRACTITIONER

Author(s): Elena Savu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2012

This article aims to find answers to several questions that appear more and more often in the field of foreign languages teaching methodology. On the one hand, one might wonder why teachers, in general, and language teachers, in particular, are supposed to become "intercultural". In this sense, the immediate reality provides very clear answers. Under the pressure of globalization and contemporary cultural diversity, the teaching of foreign languages acquires well-defined intercultural dimensions expressed in the content, curricula, teaching methods and educational objectives which reflect this trend towards internalisation. The teachers are the promoters of these changes and, at the same time, the first “intercultural” models for their students. On the other hand, the intercultural “metamorphosis” of teachers foregrounds two essential aspects: the definition and the awareness of their own motivation in approaching inter-culturalism and, in the same way, the development of an adequate intercultural communication competence. Drawing on the numerous references available in the literature, the article defines the concepts of intercultural motivation and intercultural communication competence by analyzing the relationships between them.

Старите български занаяти – в търсене на чешки преводни еквиваленти

Author(s): Mariya Rakova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The aim of this paper is to analyse the translation procedures, which were used in the translating of Radichkov’s novel Страх and Chajtov’s short story Когато светът си съ- буваше потурите into Czech language. The main difficulty which the translator faced was how to transfer the dialect lexemes. In translatology it is not recommended to substitute one dialect for another, so these elements must be compensated by another means of expression which transfers the functions of the dialect lexemes.

Инструменти за измерване на интеркултурната компетентност

Author(s): Raya Zhivkova-Krupeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

The aim of the present article is an overview of existing instruments for measuring intercultural competence. The wide variety of instruments is due to focus on different aspects of intercultural competence in the design of each of them and the lack of a unified notion as to the components of intercultural competence. The majority of instruments for measuring intercultural competence are oriented towards teamwork in international corporations, which defines their characteristic features. Since they are not directly applicable in FLT, an instrument based on Byram's model of intercultural competence is more suitable.

Проблемно обучение, електронно учене и мобилни технологии при изучаването на чужд език

Author(s): Maria Neikova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

The article focuses on the role and place of problem-based learning in foreign language teaching. Its practical application creates the necessary conditions for the students to become active, autonomous subjects of their own learning. Problem-based learning is mostly implemented in the context of the traditional in-person form of education but it can function successfully in the context of e-learning as well. As a result, problem-based learning online strengthens its positions in FLT today. Mobile technologies are successfully integrated in the process of language learning and allow the students to overcome the restrictions of time and place in their own learning.
