İMPARATORLUKTAN
KÜRESELLEŞMEYE DİL VE İKTİDAR

İMPARATORLUKTAN KÜRESELLEŞMEYE DİL VE İKTİDAR

Author(s): Ahmet Kayıntu / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 14/2017

The aim of this study is to analyse the role of English language in the formation of British Empire in the light of discourse and power by Michel Foucault and hegemony by Antonio Gramsci. Languistic studies, works of literature and art have been studied in isolation from political discouses, power relations on the grounds that they are personal, individual or trancendental fields. The process has been overturned following the prevalence of the concept of Orientalism –a concept put forward by Edward Said to describe the image of East in the Western literature and culture which was, then, evolved into postcolonial studies. Due to the reception of Orientalism and postcolonial studies the role of language, literature and art in the formation of ruling power, national state and national identity have been reconsidered. In this context, the most striking examples are undoubtedly in the process of exalting British language and literature and presenting it as the only alternative, furthering, and sometimes disregarding, other languages, arts and cultures in the formation, strengthening and conquest of the British Empire.

MERSİN-SİLİFKE YÖRÜK KÜLTÜR HAYATINDA KÜL

Author(s): Mehmet Alptekin / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2019

Juruks are also known as a nomadic Turkish tribe that live by husbandry and they usually live around Taurus Mountains. The term “Juruks” also refers to nomadic Oghuz tribes (the Turkmen) who arrived and settled in Anatolia. Taurus Mountains are the home for several highlands and pastures, they have high altitude and convenient conditions for Asian style living. That’s why they have become the primary living quarters of the Turkmen who came to Anatolia since the XI the century. Silifke district of Mersin (İçel) province has the favourable climate and geographical features in which Juruks can breed their animals and carry on with their other labor. The district also hosts numerous nomad groups such as Bahşiş, Döneli, Menemenci, Sarıkeçili and Tekeli. The cultural values of Central Asia brought by the nomads are still quite alive across this territory. Ash has a cleansing property. Taking this into consideration, the study examined its place and importance in various implementations starting from its production phase based on the examples attained from Mersin-Silifke Juruks. This way, the importance of ash which was once a must of a certain period in the cultural life was emphasized.

Romanian University Historians in the 1930s and 1940s – the Case of Dimitrie Todoranu, Professor at the University of Cluj

Romanian University Historians in the 1930s and 1940s – the Case of Dimitrie Todoranu, Professor at the University of Cluj

Author(s): Ana - Maria STAN / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

This study focuses on the complex topics of university history and academic strategy as they were seen in the late 1930s and early 1940s by a Romanian scholar, Dimitrie Todoranu. At the time a young psychologist and university member of staff, Todoranu held influential administrative positions, being appointed head of the University Office at the Romanian University of Cluj in 1934. Starting from that year, and throughout the Second World War, he reflected and published rather extensively on the characteristics, the “role and the essenceˮ of a university in Europe and in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. Using the evolution of the Romanian University of Cluj as a case study, Todoranu tried to define what a modern university should look like, what were the best relationships between students and professors, what the public significance of a university should be in the life of a (nation)state. Todoranu’s works and ideas testify not only to a significant phase in the field of European higher education, but also represent an important and a less known episode / contribution to the history of universities in the 20th century Romania.

YEREL BASINA GÖRE 1935-1950 YILLARI ARASINDA URFA’DA MAHALLİ VE MİLLİ BAYRAM KUTLAMALARI

Author(s): Ahmet İlyas / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 16/2018

National holiday as a phenomenon is one of the principle concepts that manifest the shared joys and values of societies. During the transition period from the Ottomans to the Republic, having celebrated no national holiday apart from the “Iyd-i Milli” forged some problems. One of the ways to help ensure the survival of a multi-national empire like the Ottomans are either holidays or religious themes or having a common history. However, these three realities were vague concepts for the Ottoman society. During the restructuring of the state after post-National Struggle, particular importance was attached to national holidays as a means to make the nationalization process concrete and to ensure the adoption of the regime. It was decided to celebrate April 23rd, the day of the Assembly’s inauguration, as the “National Sovereignty and Kids Holiday”; May 19th, the day when Atatürk arrived Samsun, combined with the “Sport Holiday” that was inherited from the Ottomans, as the “Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sport Holiday”; October 29th, the date when the Sultanate was abolished and the Republic was proclaimed, as the “Republic Holiday”; finally August 30th, when the Greeks were defeated, as the “Victory Holiday”. This work encompasses the process from 1935, the milestone of officially celebrating the holidays, to 1950. The holiday excitements experienced in this process in Urfa is presented as reflected in the local newspapers.

О композиционных структурах и иконографических схемах греко-скифского искусства (на примере изделий из кургана Солоха)

Author(s): Lyubov N. Ermolenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2019

The article analyzes battle images on the jewellery from the Solokha barrow: a comb, a gorytos overlay and a vessel with scenes of heroic hunting of Scythian warriors. The author discusses these metalwork artifacts considered to be objects of the Graeko-Scythian art in terms of their dual cultural attribution. The artistic features of the objects in question characterized in the paper include the arrangement of composition through numerical patterns, “duplication” of scenes where people act with those involving animals, and the use of iconographic patterns of the Greek art (military posture of “lunge”, etc.) to create the images of fighting Scythian characters. The compositional and iconographic analogies for the analyzed images in Greek vase painting are given, mainly based on the subjects of the Trojan epic, amazonomachy, and centauromachy. An attempt is made to identify compositional elements and artistic motives that correspond to the artistic perception and world view of the Scythian owners of precious objects from Solokha. The author assumes that clear structure and rhythm of the composition, the use of anthropomorphic-zoomorphic “doublets” and other features could meet the artistic demand of the Scythians.

Сцены сражения на золотом конусе из Передериевой Могилы и скифский миф о Колаксае

Author(s): Yurii B. Polidovych / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2019

The article addresses the gold object found in 1988 in a grave-mound Perederieva Mogyla of the 4th century BC. It relates to objects of unknown purpose, which are conventionally called cones. Two battle scenes are depicted on the Perederieva Mogyla cone. An analysis of the iconography suggests that the scenes consistently represent two key episodes of the legend (myth) about three brothers. The first scene shows the conspiracy of the elder brothers, the second scene — the death of the younger brother. The legend of the three brothers is well known in the Iranian mythological and epic traditions. It tells about the sons of the hero Fereydun (Thraetaona in the Avesta) — Salm, Tur and Iraj. Fereydun divided the world into three kingdoms and gave them to his sons. The younger son became king in Iran, and the elder brothers envied this. They conclude an alliance and kill Iraj. Analyzing and comparing the Scythian and Iranian myths, the author comes to the conclusion that the Scythian hero Kolaxais corresponds to the Iranian Fereydun/Thraetaona, and the story of his sons is depicted on the cone. The death of his younger son was the first death, the first blood with which the history of human wars began. It is a symbolic sacrifice that is made to seize power. The legend of the three brothers became the basis of the concept of power among the Iranian peoples, including the Scythians. She was associated with important royal and military rituals, in which they used the golden cone.

Военная тематика пекторали из Толстой Могилы

Author(s): Leonid I. Babenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2019

From the first sight, among the images and plots of the Pectoral from Tolstaya Mogila, the military topics is secondary. However, upon a closer view, more deep association of pectoral and different sides of military domain reveals. Gorytus in the upper frieze central scene are the thinnest volume prototype model. The Gorytus semantics is determined by their peculiarity of position and the decoration of plots with scenes of fight of a serpentine personage with a cat predator. A shirt of mutton fur, which is interpreted by many as a khvarenah symbol, could also have a utilitarian function as a coat of mail with a military belt attached to it. As for social attribution of the central scene characters, the dominant opinion is that they belong to the military class — either like kings or like archers. The pectoral composition in a whole can be associated with the military domain; as it narrates about destiny of its owner, his passing through the military initiations for obtaining higher status. At the bottom of the pectoral conception there could be a transformation of associations chain of the images (shield of Achilles — shield-pelta — breastplate), which are also directly connected to the military domain. The idea of hinge mounting is most likely adopted from the construction of the helmets. The connection with the military culture is also reflected by the burial complex composition. All of this allows stating the deep association of the pectoral with the military culture domain and allows considering its function as an attribute of military initiation and of a high status.
