Industrial Law and the Productive Capacity of Labour in Nigeria

Industrial Law and the Productive Capacity of Labour in Nigeria

Author(s): Matthew Enya Nwocha / Language(s): English Issue: 137/2017

This Paper has discussed the various employment laws in the country and the inherent defects in them that have impacted negatively on staff productivity. The Paper came against the background of the low productive output of the Nigerian worker that has adversely affected the growth of the national economy and created room for fraud and corruption in the public service as well as the private sector. The Paper has found that aside of defective labour laws, the mentality of Nigerian courts to labour disputes, the negative attitude of Nigerian workers and poor work ethics, and the poor conditions of service in the labour sector all contribute to low output and productivity. Therefore, the Paper has suggested ways that these negative trends can be reversed among them, the amendment of the extant industrial laws and improvement of the working conditions of the Nigerian employee.

Mean reversion in unemployment: new findings from the Baltic tigers

Author(s): Fumitaka Furuoka / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2017

The tendency of the unemployment rate to revert to the mean value or the natural rate of unemployment has been one of the most discussed topics in macroeconomics. This study focused on three Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – as case studies to investigate unemployment dynamics. Three unit root tests were performed for this purpose: 1) the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test, 2) the Seemingly Unrelated Regressions Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SURADF) test and 3) the Fourier Augmented Dickey-Fuller (FADF) test. The null hypothesis was that unemployment in the Baltic countries is a unit root process. As the findings revealed, the ADF test and the SURADF test failed to reject the null hypothesis of a unit root for all the three Baltic countries. However, the nonlinear FADF test could not reject the null hypothesis for Lithuania. This means that unemployment in Lithuania could be described as a stationary process. As such, it has the tendency to revert to a sustainable level. By contrast, unemployment in Estonia and Latvia would be best characterised as a non-stationary process where the unemployment rate lacks the mean reverting behaviour.

Can residential integration be a stable equilibrium?

Author(s): Raúl Conejeros,Miguel Vargas / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2017

Shelling's model and its different versions predict that segregation is the unique stable equilibrium. However, cities around the world show different levels of intermingle, and it is very uncommon to observe fully segregated urban patterns even when segregation is high. We argue that individuals do not take into account only their neighbours characteristics for making a location decision. In particular, if residential segregation generates ghettos of low-skilled labourers, the societal level of production would diminish and, consequently, individuals’ level of consumption too, affecting all society members’ well-being. When agents care about the impact of segregation on their own consumptions, we prove that the set of system's equilibria can be one containing states of residential integration. Besides, using simulations, we compare the aggregated utility related to these equilibria with the maximum level of aggregated utility.

Regional employment generation potential of the Turkish labor market: an inter-sectoral perspective

Author(s): Umut Gündüz,Tolga Kaya / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2017

Contractionary effects of the current global crisis are not homogenous among sectors. Moreover, sectoral employment multipliers and high regional unemployment differentials unequally transfer these effects into labor market. The purpose of this study is to explore the inter-sectoral sensitivities of regional labor markets in Turkey to changes in the final demand. To do this, we decompose the labor demand by sectors and by regions using input-output methodology. Own employment generation effects and regional employment multipliers of each sector are calculated. Overall findings constitute an employment generation map of Turkey. One of the major findings is the strength of the mutual relationship between agriculture and manufacturing sectors. The biggest spillover effect is created by manufacturing upon mostly agriculture, trade and transportation. Agriculture, social services and trade are the most sensitive sectors to changes in the final demand. At regional level; trade, social services and manufacturing are the most influential sectors on Istanbul. Besides, agriculture, social services and construction sectors have the highest employment generation potentials in South Eastern Anatolia.

Edukacja zawodowa zorientowana na rynek pracy

Edukacja zawodowa zorientowana na rynek pracy

Author(s): Ryszard Gerlach / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2017

Vocational education is both an integral and autonomic part of the socio-economic system. Thus, the expectations and requirements of the labor market ought to be an important indicator for this kind of education. The basic task of vocational education is to prepare for the employment in the modern, often unstable and “fickle” but also changeable and unpredictable labor market. As it is true what A. Giddens writes, that the future of the majority of people will directly depend on their being successful in their professional lives. Their success, in turn, depends on the qualifications and competences they present. Vocational education is the way leading to them. This is why one should consider its orientation towards the labor market.

Prava zaposlenih na kruzerima

Author(s): Mario Reljanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 1/2017

Work on ships falls into specific jobs, since the work process takes place in the same environment in which employee spends his own leisure time – hence, employee needs to provide working conditions as well as living conditions on board, in terms of meeting all basic needs of employees. Although the so-called cruiser industry has been expanding in the world for several decades, there are no effective mechanisms that will enable respect of basic working rights of cruisers employees, as well as their proper working and living conditions. Among the rights that are constantly violated the most important ones concern the length of working hours, breaks, salaries. However, some other rights have been significantly reduced or threatened too, such as the right to dignity at work, protection against discrimination, abuse and sexual harassment, the inability to exercise collective rights. The paper deals with the study of these problems, both through an attempt to examine some of the possible universal legal frameworks to be applied, as well as through reports and examples of the practice of applying existing rules.

Zawody z przyszłością (na przykładzie siedleckiego rynku pracy)

Author(s): Małgorzata Radziukiewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 5/2011

The article presents a list of professions with the future, which should arouse interest of Siedlce employers in the years to come. Information on the deficit professions may be useful, in particular, for secondary schools graduates who have to choose the direction of their own education and profession as well as for the education authorities in designating lines of education. The author’s intent was not, however, exclusively to generate such a list (in a short time period, the list of deficit professions becomes outdated) but to present the indicator method as a simple tool that may be used for a systematic surveying demand and supply not only in the Siedlce labour market.
