Author(s): William Shakespeare / Language(s): English,Bulgarian

Shakespeare’s Hamlet is the first book of the new bilingual library "English Poetic Classics" by the East-West Publishing House. The bilingual format of this library provides readers with the opportunity to get deeper into the subtleties of the text regarding some of the most valuable works of English literature by comparing original text and its translation, and also to get into the specifics of poetic translation of classical works. Hamlet is Shakespeare's most popular, and most puzzling, play. It follows the form of a "revenge tragedy," in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father's murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties. Among them: What is the Ghost--Hamlet's father demanding justice, a tempting demon, an angelic messenger? Does Hamlet go mad, or merely pretend to? Once he is sure that Claudius is a murderer, why does he not act? Was his mother, Gertrude, unfaithful to her husband or complicit in his murder?

Author(s): William Shakespeare / Language(s): English,Bulgarian

Shakespeare’s Macbeth is the fourth book of the new bilingual library "English Poetic Classics" by the East-West Publishing House. The bilingual format of this library provides readers with the opportunity to get deeper into the subtleties of the text regarding some of the most valuable works of English literature by comparing original text and its translation, and also to get into the specifics of poetic translation of classical works. In 1603, James VI of Scotland ascended the English throne, becoming James I of England. London was alive with an interest in all things Scottish, and Shakespeare turned to Scottish history for material. He found a spectacle of violence and stories of traitors advised by witches and wizards, echoing James’s belief in a connection between treason and witchcraft. In depicting a man who murders to become king, Macbeth teases us with huge questions. Is Macbeth tempted by fate, or by his or his wife’s ambition? Why does their success turn to ashes? Like other plays, Macbeth speaks to each generation. Its story was once seen as that of a hero who commits an evil act and pays an enormous price. Recently, it has been applied to nations that overreach themselves and to modern alienation. The line is blurred between Macbeth’s evil and his opponents’ good, and there are new attitudes toward both witchcraft and gender.

Author(s): William Shakespeare / Language(s): English,Bulgarian

Shakespeare’s Othello is the second book of the new bilingual library "English Poetic Classics" by the East-West Publishing House. The bilingual format of this library provides readers with the opportunity to get deeper into the subtleties of the text regarding some of the most valuable works of English literature by comparing original text and its translation, and also to get into the specifics of poetic translation of classical works. In Othello, Shakespeare creates powerful drama from a marriage between the exotic Moor Othello and the Venetian lady Desdemona that begins with elopement and mutual devotion and ends with jealous rage and death. Shakespeare builds many differences into his hero and heroine, including race, age, and cultural background. Yet most readers and audiences believe the couple’s strong love would overcome these differences were it not for Iago, who sets out to destroy Othello. Iago’s false insinuations about Desdemona’s infidelity draw Othello into his schemes, and Desdemona is subjected to Othello’s horrifying verbal and physical assaults.

Author(s): Polina Evaldivna Gerchanivska / Language(s): Ukrainian

Author(s): Ines Prica / Language(s): Serbian

Hudebně-literární slovník. Hudební díla inspirovaná slovesným uměním. Skladatelé 20. století. III. díl slovníkové trilogie

Author(s): Vladimír Spousta / Language(s): Czech

The third part of a Musical-Literary Dictionary builds on the first two parts of the Dictionary dealing with international and Czech composers which were published by the Masaryk University Press in 2011. The third part of the Dictionary concludes a monumental dictionary trilogy. This work deals with literary production of the 20th century composers and registers only their musicial compositions which are linked to literary (exceptionally also visual) art. The link could have a form of unspecified literary, visual or musical inspiration. In the most cases the connectionis about a common idea, theme, content or text of a literary work. The Dictionary designed this way brings a new and original point of view to the 20th century artificial and non-artificial musical production in a worldwide context into Czech and world musicial and literary lexicography. The book includes 4,205 musicial works of 533 Czech and international composers living from 1930 to the present and, on the other hand, it includes also 1,995 literary authors whose literary works have inspired the birth of musicial works. Furthermore the Dictionary pays attention to folk literature and its display in musicial production and also to musical works through which their authors have paid tribute to important artists of the past.

Author(s): Mariana Kunešová / Language(s): French

The publication focuses on the absurd in the French Dada and pre-surrealist theatre, examining the scenical potential of three texts which have, until now, remained practically unexplored: “La Premiere aventure celeste de Mr. Antipyrine” by T. Tzara, “Les Mysteres de l’amour” by R. Vitrac, and “S’il vous plait” by A. Breton and P. Soupault. The author understands the absurd as an aesthetic category applicable to theatre analysis in general – contrary to the “Theatre of the absurd”, a concept suggested by M. Esslin in order to characterize the avant-garde of the 1950s and often criticized for its lack of precision. The conclusion evaluates Esslin's contribution to the study of the absurd in theatre.

Praha objektivem tajné policie

Author(s): Jan H. Vitvar ,Pavel Žáček,Anna Pavlíková,Miroslav Urbánek,Vladimír Bosák / Language(s): English,Czech

On March 1, 1948, the original nucleus of the unit of the Communist political police specializing in the surveillance of individuals was created, starting with fourteen men. Shortly before its dissolution, in the year 1989, its final successor – the Surveillance Directorate (Directorate IV of the National Security Corps – SNB), in the strength of 795 servicemen and women of the State Security Service (StB) – was capable of shadowing not only 523 Czechoslovak and other state officers (some even repeatedly), but also a whole range of stationary premises, including twelve embassies. Before starting to fulfill its designated tasks, the Surveillance Directorate, the same as a host of other security services, went through tempestuous organizational and personnel development. At first its equipment for the documentation of surveilled “subjects” was very poor: in September 1949, policemen-tails of Sector V of the State Security Headquarters had at their disposal only one camera, and on top of that a so-called open (undisguised) one, which they did not sufficiently make use of in their operations. Only later, the national enterprise Meopta stepped in to produce very good cameras of a small size with the name Mikroma, which were integrated into the tails’ gear.2 In October 1951, a special State Security school was launched in Veltrusy, whose aim was to prepare instructors of future training courses in the field of surveillance. In March 1953, the “tailing school” (as they themselves called it) linked up with this school. The instruction of young perspective policemen took place over six-month cycles. In individual courses, trainees learned the theory and practice of surveillance, how to take photo-documentation, reveal the identity of individuals (the “ustanovka,” or roughly, “detection,” a term adopted from the Soviet model), and manage collaborators. In addition to perfunctory instruction in the basics of socialist law, they were liberally indoctrinated in the ideology of Marxism-Leninism. The return of the first functionaries from the professional security school in the Soviet Union meant the application of the Soviet State Security Service (KGB)’s experience to a full extent. The Directorate’s school moved first to Vojkov, and later, in 1956, to Slapy.

Sanatoriju arhitektūra Latvijā 1918-1940

Author(s): Karīna Horsta / Language(s): Latvian

This study is an analytical survey of sanatoriums built and arranged in the Republic of Latvia during the inter-war period, broadening the view on the healthcare architecture at that time. In Latvia's history of sanatorium architecture that began in the 1870s and lasted till the 1980s, the 1920s-30s saw the peak of the sanatorium construction type as a well-considered, stylistically consistent architectural object, organically blending in with the landscape and surrounding buildings. Leading architects of the time, like Ernests Štālbergs, Kaŗlis Bikše and Aleksandrs Klinklāvs, have greatly contributed to the development of Latvia's sanatoruium architecture. Because of specific requirements for sanatoriums, the researched objects are mostly located outside Riga - in rural areas and former resorts throughout Latvia. The book contains a summary of 7000 words and an a list of images in English.

Między „sensus catholicus" a „uchrześcijanionym nacjonalizmem”. Sztuka Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego na Górnym Śląsku wobec dyskursów narodowych

Author(s): Jerzy Gorzelik / Language(s): Polish

The book addresses the much-neglected topic of permeating of nationalist ideas into spaces of Catholic worship and of Catholic-nationalist discourses being monumentalised by means of church art. The field of research is Upper Silesia - an area of competition between supporters of various identity programs. The author shows how from the beginning of the 20th century to modern times the elites of the Church, supported by artists and public authorities, used art to build nations and other imagined communities. Moreover, he analyzes iconographic programs and narratives, associating themes and motifs with myths, symbols and historiosophical constructs. The book gives an image of the dilemmas faced by Catholics in the era of intensive nation-building processes.

Uniwersytet Warszawski i fotografia 1839−1921. Ludzie, miejsca, wydarzenia

Author(s): Danuta Jackiewicz / Language(s): English,Polish

The bilingual (Polish-English) and richly illustrated book is an attempt to show the references between the history of University of Warsaw and the development of photography – a crucial invention for the new visual civilization. The book covers the period from 1839, when the invention of daguerreotype was announced in France and when the first daguerreotypes were made in Poland, to 1921, when the situation of the University, reactivated during the World War I, was finally stabilized after the Polish-Soviet War. On the one hand the book presents the buildings of the University and the oldest photos of the people who created the history of the institution, on the other hand – it contains the reflection on the origins of photography in Warsaw and on the participation of the scientific milieu in its development. Which is worth noticing, at the beginning of the 1850s the scientists of the University of Warsaw already regarded photography as a useful research tool. The book is divided into two parts. The comprehensive essay illustrated with several dozens of figures is devoted to the origins of the photography and to its connection with the University of Warsaw. In the album more than 100 photographs (with the extensive commentaries) present the portraits of the professors and the students, the buildings and the important events related to the University. New Normal Beyond The Pandemic: Pandemiyle Birlikte Yerelden Küresele Yabancılaşmayı Yeniden

Author(s): / Language(s): Turkish,English

The Covid-19 crisis, with all the horrors it has caused, has offered humanity an opportunity to reflect on itself and evaluate its point, even if it is delayed. In a very short time, we found ourselves worried about whether we could reach the objects we needed, whether we would lose our jobs or keep our freedom.Alienation is described as withdrawing or separation of a person or a person’s affections from an object or position of former attachment: alienation viewed as a sense of detachment from the values of one’s society, family, and even from one’s own feelings from the values of one’s society and family (S. L. Halleck). Different forms of alienation, such as cultural alienation, professional alienation, and religious alienation, are among the current issues. It is obvious that we need to define different forms of alienation along with the pandemic.I believe this book will not be the first nor the last research book published on the Covid-19 pandemic. Our aim is to leave a resource on the subject for the next generation of researchers. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the book and hope it will be beneficial for the academic community.
