Author(s): Slađana Rakić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 47/2012

In this paper we made comparison between the novels The portrait of the young artist by James Joyce and The Garden, Ashes by Danilo Kis thanks to psychoanalytic methods . The comparison not only examined the influence of Joyce’s creativity on literature in 20th century, but the reflection of Joyce’s narrative at the artist, rebel, exile, and the witnessof time in one of the portraits of artists in Serbian literature after World War II, at the portrait of Andreas Sam in Kis’s novel Garden, Ashes. Through the figures of the artist in his youth, and through other themes sush as art, religion and poetic sensibility, we observed similarity in Joyce’s and Kis`s narrative . The aim was to identify authentic narrative-conceptual components in the arts of two writers

Author(s): Aleksandra M. Petrović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 48/2012

In this work opposed attitudes of these two important artists about understanding the relation between art and reality are presented. Cernisevski, being close to positivism, believes that the main function af art is gnostic, so that its purpose is to reproduct reality, to find and establish truth, which brings art close to history. On the other hand, Laza Kostic denies science as possibility to understand beauty in art. The poet’s contest of positivism of the Russian poet, presented in his “Remarks on Aesthetic Relation of Skill Towards Nature“, found stronghold in unfounded and often contradictious claims of the Rissian poet.

Author(s): Jelena V. Aleksov / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 56/2015

This paper aims to bring closer the perception of the idea of the city described through the parallel of three different heroes, Odysseus, Bloom and Rjepnin, with the symbolic illumination of movement to different pathways of the world and the impact of the city on the completion of theirlife’s journeys. Rjepnin’s intertwined wanderings through the streets of London, as an ontological category, are becoming an integral part of the hero’s being, carrying on a parallel with a great antique hero but only at the level of storytelling, whose life was only in the hands of the gods, to the parallel with the meaningless life of Lepopold Blum, which is shown by his pacing down the streets of Dublin. Various metamorphoses reveal deeply imprinted marks of Megalopolis, which make Rjepnin and Blum heroes of the disturbed name and identity, misunderstood and rejected by the society to which they belong. In contrast, the metamorphoses reveal the charm of Odysseus’s stability, which is concealed in his heart, which, due to the terrible efforts, has learned to be patient. The parallels of the three heroes are transferred to the portraying of characters of their women, faithful Nadja Rjepnin, wise Penelope and lustful Molly Bloom, through whom the circle of the dark labyrinth of the city completes and closes, in which Rjepnin’s movement is opposite to Odysseus’s and synchronous to Lepold’s. As a result of all that, the unachievable Rjepnin’s desire to return to Russia is reflected, which is opposite to Odysseus’s wanderings which are completed by fulfilling of his wish and returning to his native Ithaca, his home. Modern Odysseus, Leopold Bloom, like Rjepnin feels that he does not belong to his countrymen, and that he will never fully belong. The search for identity in a maze of city streets will connect Blum and Rjepnin and stress the problem of alienation of the individual from the society in European metropolises even more, revealing the depth of the meaningless present and tragic future. In contrast to Odysseus, Bloom and Rjepnin become prisoners in the dark labyrinth of the city, forgotten and dehumanized.

Author(s): Đorđe N. Kebara / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 57/2015

Author(s): Iva Trifonova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2016

The article focuses on the history of the Book of Revelation of St. John the Theologian among Orthodox Slavs in the Middle Ages. The aim is to present its place among the other biblical books, related to Cyril and Methodius’ literary tradition and follow its origin, its way of life and spreading in the Slavia Orthodoxa. The two main versions of the distribution of the book are presented – without interpretations and with the interpretations of St. Andrew of Caesarea, while the specifics of the basic versions of the book are also presented (East Slavonic and South Slavic versions with commentaries, Bosnian Cyrillic version, the earliest Serbian transcript, Croatian Glagolitic fragments, Bulgarian calendar version). An opinion has been expressed that a common initial translation is at the root of all these versions of the book, which was accompanied by interpretations, and probably made in Bulgaria at the end of 9th–10th C. Subsequently, it has been edited at different Times and in different locations, placed in the composition of different collections, or as a separate book.

Author(s): Jovan R. Bazić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 4/2012

This paper examines the role of Kosovo myth in shaping Serbian national identity through a very complex socio-historical processes, as well as his reflections on modern Serbian politics. The emergence of the Kosovo myth is related to the narratives of the battle of Kosovo in the 1389th founded in the church literature and the Serbian poems of Kosovo epic cycle, and then in continuing storytelling about this event which belong to different discourses. The Kosovo myth is the most important Serbian myth that forms the basis of Serbian national identity. It was an important element of national feelings and had a very important role in the cultural and political homogenization of Serbs, especially during the wars of liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Its peak, the Kosovo myth reached during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), when the liberation of Kosovo and other Serbian regions, was interpreted as the fulfillment of the covenant of ancestors and revenge to Turks for the defeat from the 1389th year. The myth was later not so emphasised except it two more powerful waves. First, during the First World War when it was instrumentalized in the function of unification of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and was treated as a common cultural heritage that unites these nations; and then, at the end of the twentieth century, during the escalation of the crisis in Kosovo and Metohija and the celebration of the 600-year Battle of Kosovo (1989).

The Dangerous Book. Observations on the Prose by Danilo Kiš, Aleksandar Hemon and Igor Štiks

The Dangerous Book. Observations on the Prose by Danilo Kiš, Aleksandar Hemon and Igor Štiks

Author(s): Ludmila Mindova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2017

The text compares three books by South Slavic authors: A Tomb for Boris Davidovic (1976) by Danilo Kiš, The Lazarus Project (2008) by Aleksandar Hemon, and Elijah’s Chair by Igor Štiks. In different genres, all three books analyse possibilities to defend human rights, and particularly the freedom of speech and thought. In these literary worlds, Europe exists mainly with its philosophical and cultural history, but also as a place with a very long tradition both in the defence and in violation of human freedom. Of course, the book as a main symbol of wisdom and thought is the primary subject of these works, and therefore it is not surprising that their writers devote important space to ‘dangerous books’ and knowledge, and ask about ethic and poetic borders between permission and prohibition.

Author(s): Željka Lj. Babić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 63/2017

The contrastive research in translation has primarily been focused on the establishment of a successful or unsuccessful transfer of specific linguistic, literary and cultural issues from a source into a target language. Starting from the posit that a translation represents a connector of the two linguistic and social cultures to which it belongs, this paper tackles the question of extraction of cultural layers which were identified within a translation and their transfer into the source-language text. By applying instruments of contrastive analysis onto a translation into English of the short story Death in Sinan’s Tekke by Ivo Andrić, the paper focuses on uncovering approaches which were used by the translator in achieving the transfer of culturally-marked issues, and which enabled him to transfer the author’s self-proclaimed visibility, so clearly felt in the source-language text, into the text in the target language. The research results show the use of three universal norms, interference, growing standardization and explicitation, during the process of translation. Also noted is the presence of equivalence during transfer of semantic and linguistic units. Finally, the paper points at the necessity of inclusion of an approach which regards a translation as a process, not as a mere product of a translator’s practice or a skill, for it will equip the future users of the text with an ability to conduct their own readings and analyses of a vast number of cultural layers, which may be traced within foundations of a literary text

Author(s): Biljana Dojčinović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 3/2013

This comparison of a short story by Virginia Woolf, ”Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street”, and Letters from Salonica as well as the novel Nove by Jelena Dimitrijević, points to the extent in which the great turmoils such as World War One, or some other wars and revolutions of the time, permeate the works written about the seemingly private and secluded lives of women. The same perspective is used for comparative analysis of the British and the Balkan modernistic representations of masculinity. The paper aims not only at making connections between these two parts of Europe, but also at questioning the range of the notion of modernism, which should, as it is argued, include the women's writings written in or about the Balkans.

MUZEJ, AMERIKA, GYNAECEUM ILI RATIŠTE - GDJE SE ZBIVAJU PRIČE O RATU 90-IH U JUGOSLAVIJI?

Author(s): Ewa Szperlik / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian,Serbian Issue: 2/2016

This paper is an attempt to analyze and read the selected prose, i.e. fictional texts about the war in former Yugoslavia, paying particular attention to the category of space—the setting. The works by M. Jergović, N. Veličković, B. Dežulović and A. Lazarevska depict traumatic history of the post-Yugoslav conflict from the “bottom-up” perspective (E. Kazaz), seen by an individual, a “weak character” (J. Matanović). In the works analyzed, the “victorious, top-down narrative” gives way to the individual, not collective experience of trauma and living in wartime. In some cases, the main characters are situated in the restricted, confined, claustrophobic spaces, and in other cases, the action takes place in an open space, and is even relocated to the Atlantic Ocean (literary escapism). The individual war experience of the characters is traumatic not only because of expressiveness and inexpressiveness of the suffering (D. LaCapra) with the instrument of language. Therefore, in writing about war some authors incline towards an intimistic reflection of their inner state, while others to the poetics of the absurd, grotesque, tragicomedy. The space and setting is not a random construction, but has a certain meaning and purpose. The text also raises the issue of terminology which is so important for many researchers: here the terms “war literature” and “anti-war literature” play the main role.

Northeast China as a Contact Zone in Polish and Serbian Travelogues, 1900-1939

Northeast China as a Contact Zone in Polish and Serbian Travelogues, 1900-1939

Author(s): Tomasz Ewertowski / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2017

Historically, Northeast China (Manchuria) was a border zone between China and nomadic peoples, as well as between Russian and Qing empires since the 17th century. In the second half of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, a number of factors (penetration by foreign powers, collapse of the Qing Empire, revolution in Russia, Japanese expansion and demographic changes) transformed this area into “a contact zone” in the sense given by Mary Louise Pratt. The main focus of the article is the way in which this contact zone was described by Polish and Serbian travellers. Their can provide a special outlook, because Poland and Serbia did not participate extensively in the colonial penetration into China, however, Serbs and Poles travelled there, often representing Russian institutions. Therefore they were observing China as agents of imperial force, but they did not identify themselves fully with it. Our analysis of the image of Northeast China as a contact zone will be divided into three broad sections: 1) political and military expansion, 2) economic and demographic relations, 3) transcultural phenomena of everyday life.

O povijesti metodike nastave književnosti u Bosni i Hercegovini: kolonijalno-provincijalni status jedne discipline

Author(s): Muhidin Džanko / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 4/2018

The paper deals with historical development of literature teaching methodology in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a special focus on development of literature teaching methodology as a university course at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, where most of the specialists in this field in Bosnia and Herzegovina come from. The paper also presents a wider South-Slavic context in which literature teaching methodology in Bosnia and Herzegovina developed. Most of the time, it had colonial, peripheral and provicial status compared to literature teaching methodology centres in Zagreb and Belgrade. The paper is self-critical, trying to incite this discipline to exit the academic and intellectual exile it has long been in.

Author(s): Sava Uko / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 02/2017

Battle of Velbazhd (1330) was recorded as a significant event in the collective consciousness of the Serbian people. Large inter-ethnic conflicts and national disasters during the Middle Ages, were interpreted as God's anger and punishment for sins committed by one nation. Violent change of hierarchical relations in society was seen as a serious sin, which results in God's punishment, in the form of a huge national disaster. The most important testimony in the Serbian medieval literature on the battle of Velbazhd, was given by Gregory Tsamblak in his "Žijtije Svetog Stefana De čanskog (Hagiography of St. Stefan of Dečani ) ." In this article we will try to look at how the notion of another was constructed, when describing large ethnic conflicts. Also, taking this medieval hagiography as example, we will follow the development of the motives of the victim, as well as the importance of this concept for the life of the medieval man.

Author(s): Alexander Otlivanchik / Language(s): English,Russian Issue: 1/2018

The article studies international and political commentaries by S. A. Nikolaevsky published under the cryptonym of S. N. in the journal “Grazhdanin” in 1872—1873. Based on the study of archival materials and autobiographical remarks in the journal articles we have identified the personality of that little known employee of “Grazhdanin”: his first name and father’s name, an approximate time of birth and an exact date of death, his network of acquaintance, activity etc. The opinion, that was earlier made public, about the using of the pseudonym of Dorogobuzhsky tourist by Nikolaevsky is considered here and is recognized hardly probable. The question about the authorship of “Political Review” in issue 10 of “Grazhdanin” of 1873 and of two anonymous publications topically correlated to the reviews by Nikolaevsky — a series of sketches “What did the death of Napoleon III in France result in” (1873 № 2) and the article “France” (1873. № 21) — is discussed. The probable authorship of the last two texts is attributed to the publisher of “Grazhdanin” V. P. Meshchersky.

O NAZIVIMA JEZIKA U KNJIŽEVNIM DJELIMA XVIII VIJEKA

O NAZIVIMA JEZIKA U KNJIŽEVNIM DJELIMA XVIII VIJEKA

Author(s): Vedad Mulavdić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 1-2/2017

The paper discusses the different names of the language in the literature of the 18th century. The sources of research were consisted of the works of three writers: Simeon Piščević, Mula-Mustafa Bašeskija i fra Filip Lastrić. All texts, written in foreign language (Russian, Turkish, Latin), include valuable data about the names of native language. Writers write in a foreign language, but they think in their native language named differently as Serbian, Slovenian, Native, Illyrian, Bosnian. It means that the awareness of the native language and its particularities has been present in this period of our language development. Also, it is obvious the difference between spoken language of that period (which is always native) and the official language of literature, which is foreign. Furthermore, as the autors belong to the different traditions of literature, their works are convenient for historical and theoretical analysis of the literature, which results in, aside of historical-linguistics approach, an integral insight in the tradition of the language in literature of the 18th century.

Putovanje kao alegorija u prozi o Drugome svjetskom ratu

Putovanje kao alegorija u prozi o Drugome svjetskom ratu

Author(s): Maciej Czerwiński / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 3-4/2017

The paper considers prose written between 1945 and 1970 as revealing changes in attitudes towards the communist idea in Croatia, and Yugoslavia, especially as regards the construct of the protagonist, i.e. the partisans. In the immediate post- WWII period, partisan activities are conceptualized as a journey through time towards a well-defined goal. In the 1950s, their journey is transformed into roaming that is eventually resolved, and from the 1960s, into roaming with no destination point, i.e. no goal. The first journey exemplifies the earliest communist vision of the bright future to which the partisans and society aspired. The second exemplifies the moment of hesitation that emerges during the journey, but is resolved. The third exemplifies hesitation that is presented as contamination of ideals and a catastrophe. The first journey is associated with the communist orthodoxy (tribal collectivism), the second with its critical re-evaluations (critical collectivism), and the third with decadent tendencies (individualism).

The semantics of the play in the novel Ivan Galeb’s Spring. The Play of Spring and Death by V. Desnica is considered from the aspect of the narrator’s creation of the “image of the world”: identity, perception of art, life, soul... The archetypal semantic fullness of the three plays the narrator remembers from his childhood are the vital elements in the interpretation of Desnica’s novel.

Author(s): Radomir V. Ivanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2007

The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part (“Prehistory and History”, p.1—7), the author primarily discussed the theoretical plane, more precisely the centuries-long birth of the history of literature within the framework of historiography, the history of ideas and the history of art (from the 16th to the 18th century); the second part (“Methods and Achievements”, p. 8—15) is dedicated to the applied plane, sudden advance in the literary history as a kind of spiritual activity, as a part of cultural-historical sciences and the science about literature (19th to 21st century). Following the generation of literary-scientific ideas and the sudden increase in the scientism in the 19th, 20th and 21st century, the author meticulously discusses the relations in the productive and receptive model, wholeheartedly accepting the classification of the Polish scientist Henryk Markiewicz into: a) historical science about literature, b) theoretical science about literature and c) metascience of literature.
