Three Chestnut Horses

Author(s): Margita Figuli / Language(s): English

This gem of Slovak naturalism was written in 1940. The story takes the reader to a mountain village. The protagonist narrates the vicissitudes, suffering, and success he experiences as he pursues a love affair, resulting in the triumph of pure love. Peter has been in love with a girl—Magdalena—since childhood and asks her to marry him. But he is too late, because a rich man, Jano Zapotočný, has already proposed to Magdalena, a proposal that her greedy mother promptly accepted on her behalf. Magdalena, out of respect for her mother's wishes, accepts the engagement. However, Magdalena promises Peter that she will put off marrying Jano and will marry him instead if he can prove that he truly loves her. He must build a house and earn a living. After almost two years Peter returns to show her that he kept his promise. But Magdalena is already married; Jano has raped her and she is pregnant. Desperate, Peter is tempted to take out his anger on Jano, nevertheless he resists the impulse. In the end, the author finds a way to reward Peter's faith in love and morality.

Vade-mecum. Transliteracja autografu

Author(s): Cyprian Kamil Norwid / Language(s): Polish

The publication is a transliteration of all the manuscripts of poems included in Cyprian Norwid's Vade-mecum. This is the first attempt to publish Norwid's work, taking into account all the elements of the original notation, thus showing the often unknown editions of his most valued poems. Owing to this, it can serve as an excellent material base for textual research.“From the perspective of textual scholarship, this work has the value of a comprehensive, original documentation as the first complete transliteration of the autograph of Vade-mecum, one of the most important items in Polish literature. The task has been accomplished in a very meticulous and responsible way. It is an important scientific aid in research on the writings of Norwid.” From the review by prof. dr hab. Józef Fert (KUL)

La realtà dell’Italia post-unitaria nelle opere di Alfredo Oriani. L’analisi storicoletteraria del caso della ricezione di un autore preteso dal regime politico

Author(s): Katarzyna Kowalik / Language(s): Italian

The monograph “La realtà dell’Italia post-unitaria nelle opere di Alfredo Oriani. L’analisi storicoletteraria del caso della ricezione di un autore preteso dal regime politico” raises the topic of a unique phenomenon in the history of Italian literature, so far rarely described in Italian studies, which was the evolving reception of the work of the writer, journalist and historian Alfredo Oriani (Faenza, 1852 – Casola Valsenio, 1909). Nowadays, little known even among Italian readers and not often mentioned in literature textbooks, ignored by literary critics during his life, forced to publish further texts for his own financial resources and in a few reviews described as an obscene artist and scribbler, in the interwar period he was surrounded by the cult of a fascist ideology’s precursor and, thanks to the personal commitment of Benito Mussolini, raised to the rank of one of the greatest writers in the history of Italy. In the thesis were discussed two motifs. First of them is an analysis of five novels of Oriani in terms of the image of Italian reality after 1861 presented in them. The second issue considered in the work is the writer’s extraordinary literary case, whose reception, changing over the decades, was strongly related to the appropriation of his oeuvre by the fascist regime seeking intellectual grounds of its ideological-political activity. The methodological assumptions of the dissertation are based on the reflection on the author’s position in the reception of a literary work and the issue of intentionality in its interpretation.

The book illustrates the poet's meeting with the reader and the poetic worlds they have created. It includes interpretations of poems written by artists biographically linked to Upper Silesia and the Dąbrowa Basin. They are connected not only by a common experience of place, but also by common themes: longing for the "little homeland", family peace, home (Florian Śmieja, Jan Darowski, Stanisław Horak, Tadeusz Różewicz), sincere expression of thoughts, emotions, de-sires, fears, disappointments over the most difficult matters (such as: homeland, politics, truth, woman) or attempts to tame death (Edward Zyman, Marian Kisiel, Jerzy Szymik), epiphany/metaphysics of words (Jerzy L. Woźniak, Tadeusz Sławek, Andrzej Szuba).

O twórczości Andrzeja Zimniaka

Author(s): Adam Mazurkiewicz / Language(s): Polish

The monographic outline is devoted to the work of Andrzej Zimniak. He is a writer who has been active creatively since 1980. Not only the most well-known aspect of his writing, i.e. science fiction, is included; the artist's popular science essays were also recalled, which is combined with fiction and not very well-known poetry (Zimniak is the author of one volume, entitled “Fraszki rubaszne” [Epigrams coarse], 2012). The overriding goal of the monograph was to show the evolution of selected motifs, the most characteristic of Zimniak's prose, which at the same time are reflected in the popular science reflection of this writer (these include m.in the possibility of contact with extraterrestrial civilization, potential ways of human self-evolution to the level of “homo superior”, ecological themes and reflection on the challenges posed by expansive – and at the same time less and less controllable – technological progress. The issues listed here have been discussed in the broad context of civilizational, social and political changes, which significantly affect Zimniak as a writer and popularizer of science, active from 1980 to the present day. This context is accompanied by a reconstruction of the evolution of the writer's philosophical and anthropological views, which are a reflection of the times in which he created. The monograph was accompanied by a bibliography constructed in such a way that it not only attested to the works referred to in the considerations. First of all, it is to be a starting point for the reader's own reading searches interested in deepening knowledge on the topics discussed in the study.

A city of ravens, fairies, angels, half raven half-human creatures, and the others…A Saturday morning that started on Portobello Road was also the beginning of a brand-new London for Mila. Le Seuil. Actes du colloque JOURNEES de la FRANCOPHONIE

Author(s): Dumas Felicia / Language(s): French

On the threshold, time and space are suspended, opening onto the realm of possible worlds. Going beyond this frontier represents a choice whose impact is a series of irreversible acts, taking one from a universe to another, from a promise to its materialization, from dream to reality, from life to death. In no man’s land, in its ambiguous in-betweenness, nothing is decided, broken, revealed or transgressed as yet. The phantasmatic appeal of the threshold challenges our ontological landmarks. It is this abundance of structuring functions that creates a liminary zone where danger is stimulating and exchange still possible, as ascent and descent both can induce a shift in terms of the level of reality and degree of knowledge involved.

Ekofantastyka

Author(s): Grażyna Gajewska / Language(s): Polish

The future, in which future generations of both human and non-human beings will live, is being shaped today, and it is in this sense that we experience it, conceptualize it to some extent, model it, and feel it emotionally and even somatically. The author of Ecofiction talks about this way of experiencing the present and future in the context of the climate crisis, water and air pollution, disappearing biodiversity, and worsening environmental injustice. The book contains the thesis that to change this state of affairs we need not only scientific, technological, political and economic tools, but also some new sensibility and aesthetics. The "management of imagination" Gajewska proposes would mean constructing new models of cognition at both the epistemological, ontological, axiological and aesthetic levels. The book also constitutes a search for such types, genres, genre varieties in literature, film, computer games, fine arts in which various scenarios of human-not-human justice (or injustice) are most clearly revealed. It makes a case for paying special attention to speculative science fiction, in which the themes of ecology and multispecies (in)justice are addressed. Engaged in presenting alternative images of reality, this trend in speculative fiction provokes audiences to rethink the place of humans on Earth, our relationship with non-humans and political-ethical-aesthetic responsibility for the possible (or probable) shape of the future. At the same time, these speculations – as products of the times in which they were conceived – reveal the ideas that present-day writers, filmmakers, artists and audiences of their works about the likely, or expected, direction in which we will (perhaps) move to transcend, or at least weaken, anthropocentric thinking and direct attention to biodiversity and multispecies well-being.
