The great artist and organizer of the Hungarian avant-garde literature and painting,Lajos Kassák was said to be a constructivist creator. His principle was the act of desemiotisation, which means the elimination of signification, and particularly sets the basic course of a constructive person’s life. Kassák’s critical studies or essays on his lyrical paragon Sándor Petőfi become confessions of a self-made man’s avant-garde thinking. According to Kassák, Petőfi was not only the most famous romantic poet of the 19 century, but he regarded his favourite writer as a real expressionist who could accomplish the idea of desemiotisation along his art and life.

When I began studying psychology in the mid 1960s at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, the name Ferenc Mérei could hardly be spoken above a whisper. Indeed, only through whispers did one learn that Mérei was a free man once again, and had found a job: as a clinical psychologist at the National Institute for Mental Health.

Mágikus realizmus a kortárs magyar prózában

In my essay I tried to reveal the characteristics of magic realism in Hungarian literature by the textual analysis of the novels Esőváros by Éva Bánki and Isten hozott by Krisztián Grecsó. These two novels emphasize the connection between narrative folk tradition and magic realism, but also unravel the basics of traditional folk writing. Storytelling, identity searching and isolation create a thematic base in both works. This magical activity is connected to the linguistic experience originating from historical fate, which is also the source of the magic-realistic language usage . These thematic and poetic attributes reveal the features of the possible variants of Central European magic realism, which carry in themselves the attributes of international definitions of notions and also the region’s typical literary traditions.

Weöres Sándor és Kosztolányi Dezső nyelvfelfogása

This paper is a short chapter of a work of research which aims at analysing Sándor Weöres’s concept of language and subjectivity. In this part of the study I propose to compare his conception of art and language with that of Dezső Kosztolányi, based on the interpretations of Esti Kornél éneke and on his essays. I focus upon the relationship between the signifier and the signified, as well as upon the nature of subjectivity in their poetry and theory. The purpose of my research is to identify the predecessors of his philosophy and to try and explain the difference between the impersonality of Weöres’s poetry and that of late modernism.

In my essay I analyse two short novels that are the part of an unfinished literary cycle (The Crone’s Stories) and published only in literary papers. The reason why they have not previously been examined by any researchers is perhaps that only The Crone’ Second Story and The Crone’s Third Story were published (and only in reverse order due to the author’s conception of the works), while The Crone’s First Story was never published. In my study I compare the two texts through the examination of the narrator and narrative techniques, thematic and historical details as well as the fantastical elements and the characteristics of magic realism. With these thematic and poetic attributes, I try to illustrate some ways of interpreting of the Crone’s Stories.

Eminescu – as described by Mózes Huba a “modern classic of literary romance”– stepped into Hungarian literature in 1885, with a Hungarian translation of the poem “Atit de frageda” by Sándor József. Starting then, and up until today, the Hungarian literary perception of the most popular and renowned Romanian poet is very rich and diverse. Following Sándor József, the perception of Eminescu in Hungarian literature was greatly influenced by Sándor Kibedi (Sándor Hapka), who was the first to publish Eminescu’s poetry in a separate book in Cluj-Napoca in 1934. (Mihail Eminescu összes költeményei. Cluj, 1934). Certainly, Eminescu’s works were continued to be translated in later years by Hungarian writers (Gere Finta, Zoltán Franyó, Zoltán Jekeli, Lajos Áprily, Jenő Dzsida, Ferenc Semler), however Kibedi’s pioneering work in the first translation deserves special focus. The present paper reflects this remarkable publishing venture.

ORWELL 1984

The digital dictatorships described by Yuval Noah Harari are characterized by centralized data processing and information in a (computational) technical environment, and the total exercise of power. The novel 1984 by George Orwell is a literary prefiguration of this totalitarian social system. The communication tools, observation and instructional methods described in the text are technically defined, and function as the pretext of digitality, and the symbolic Big Brother illustrates the centralized nature of control and regulation in the diegetic world of the novel. The method of interpretation elaborated in the study does not ignore the aesthetic values of the text, its literary characteristics, the embeddedness of its genre and its paradigmatic significance, while illuminating the reasons behind the contemporary and increasing popularity of the novel, its appearance as a reference, but also explaining why its symbols are coming to independent life and spreading so virulently across different discourses of culture and art.

A nők elleni erőszak témája a színpadon Dugonics András Bátori Mária című szomorújátékában

One of the best works of András Dugonics is considered to be Bátori Mária (1794). Although the drama is based on Soden’s Ignes de Castro that takes place in Munich in 1784, Dugonics’s play is set in the Hungarian Middle Ages. In Kálmán Könyves’s medieval court, the dramatic conflict arises when duke István frees himself of his first marriage that was arranged for political reasons, and he does not want to mourn his deceased wife, but instead he wants to raise his affair with Mária Bátori to the level of approved marriage by the Church. The specific motifs of the Hungarian literature of the 18th century can be found in the text of the sad play, but, opposed to Kálmán and István, Dugonics did not put on the stage only an element of the era like the rejection of the parental will, but also the conflict for the throne between father and his son. In my study, I reveal how the motive of violence against women appears in András Dugonics’s drama, and I intend to add contributions to the dramatic tradition of József Katona’s national tragic drama of Bánk bán.

Moderne-Debatten auf der Grundlage des kulturellen Transfers im Pester LLoyd der 1900er-Jahre

Die wichtigste deutschsprachige Tageszeitung Ungarns, der liberale Pester Lloyd (1854–1944) spielte in der Kulturvermittlung zwischen Ungarn und den anderen europäischen Ländern von Anfang an eine entscheidende Rolle. Um die Jahrhundertwende, als Literatur und Kunst den Erwartungen der institutionalisierten volksnationalen Ästhetik untergeordnet wurden, konnte seine Praxis des regelmäßigen Kulturtransfers in Form von kritischen und theoretischen Veröffentlichungen der Moderne zur Etablierung verhelfen. Der Beitrag stellt die einzelnen Etappen dieses Prozesses mit typischen Textbeispielen dar.

Dakle, Konrad je simbol naše novodobne povijesti, ali ujedno i donedavno žestoki kritičar sveprisutne globalizacije koju je smatrao neminovnom, ali joj je želio dati ljudski lik. Az irodalmi regionalizmus – hungarológiai érték

The study considers the formation of Hungarian cultural regions as a historical fact and it focuses on the peculiarities of Hungarian minority literature beyond the borders. The formation of regional values usually does not assume experimentation, but it rather applies the usual narratives and creates a unique way of communication and language style with its specific thinking characteristics and emphases. In many pieces of Hungarian literature in Slovakia the means of artistic expression were minority fate and experience, which provided facts for the interpretation of minority literature. Similar processes and factors have shaped the Central European culture and its literary characters. Based on this, we need to get to the deeper layers of literature and creative motivation in order to create a credible image about the relationship between minority identity and literary value. The path of minority authors’development leads from the search for reality, morality, identity and other literary values to the finding of aesthetics.

A KÖZTESSÉG OTTHONOSSÁGA TOLNAI OTTÓ MŰVÉSZETÉBEN

In-betweenness, hibridity and heterogeneity are key categories in the works of Ottó Tolnai. The coziness of in-betweenness characterizes his opus from the beginning. The aim of the paper is to examine in-between spaces, identities and transgressions in Ottó Tolnai’s novel Szeméremékszerek on the basis of related theoretical works by Michel Foucault, Marc Augé, Andrei Pleşu and Gérard Genette. The analyzed novel is connected to the motive of in-betweenness in many aspects. Its action takes place in the boundary zone, the narrative voice and the narrator’s identity are in-between. The narrator speaks as Scheherazade, so this situation is also in-between. The investigation reveals that Tolnai’s text universe cannot be forced into predetermined categories or systems because it always resists, constantly moving out, so it exists in a kind of intermediate state.

In my essay I attempt to unfold the everyday life of István Tiboldi (1792–1880), the Transylvanian Unitarian teacher, occasional poet and collector of folk poetry, based on the available sources. I show that despite the scarce sources we can still draw a complex picture of him along the lines of his assumed roles, examining him in the light of these interacting roles. I am attempting to show how he became well-known throughout Transylvania despite the fact that he was only a teacher first in a middle-sized, later a small village, primarily wrote his occasional poems for his students, and participated in collecting only in his spare time.

„Édes jó Brassai bácsi!”

The correspondence of Sámuel Brassai, an important personality of the 19th century, a scholar of many scientific disciplines, remained as manuscript. Although we do not know all of the correspondence, it is an important resource for studying the history of literature, culture, or society. Róza Erkel, Anna Rigó or Marlin Molly are just few of the women with whom Brassai had a personal relationship, and with whom he corresponded. Based on these letters, we can analyze the functioning of the spiritual and financial support of women interested in the art of music and painting, as well as Brassai’s position on women’s roles in society and their careers, and on the debate(s) concerning women’s professionalisation.

„Kétéltűek”? A Trianon utáni menekülés és annak rajzai a korszak irodalmában

The first part of the study presents the situation of the 400-500 thousand Hungarian refugees from the countries which emerged following the Trianon treaty in the 19181924 period and the public policies aimed at their integration in Hungary. While at the end of 1918 the Hungarian state urged for the mass exodus of government officials, by 1920 it has become clear that the yearly-increasing influx puts the bearing capacity of the country to a serious test. Before the confirmation of the peace treaty in November 1920, the Hungarian government radically tightened the rules of immigration and, as a result, the number of the refugees fell to one fifth in 1921 and the wave of refugees definitively dried up by 1924. The initial interest of the Hungarian state and society quickly disappeared, and the issue of the refugees has quickly become marginalized within social and cultural life. This second point is illustrated via four literary oeuvres in the second part of the study. The short stories of Zoltán Szitnyai and the novels of Sándor Török, Zoltán Jékely and Lajos Zilahy are interpreted as illustrations of the discourse types of the literature of the period, along with the causes which prevented these works from being included in the national canon.
