Im vorliegenden Beitrag werden die singularischen Instrumentalendungen der i-Deklination in der Geschichte der kroatischen Hochsprache besprochen. Es zeigt sich, dass die Endung -i gegen Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts belegt ist und dass sie bereits im 17. Jahrhundert neben der Endung -ju ungefähr so verwendet wird, wie es für zeitgenössisches Kroatisch typisch ist. Diese Verwendung geht nicht auf dialektale, sondern auf hochsprachliche Entwicklungen mit dem Beginn im 17. Jahrhundert zurück.

The paper analyzes the genesis of narrative and modes of remembering the Bosnian Franciscan, Ivan Frano Jukić – ranging from old historiographical texts about him, artistic literary conceptualization of Jukić’s figure, to recent essays in the field of theory of literature. In seven works of literature (three dramas, two novels and two poems), and in the available historiography of literature, we detect different strategies for the production of positive conceptualization of Ivan Frano Jukić, indicating the thin border-line between the unforgotten Jukić, the remembered Jukić, „the heritage cult“ Jukić, and Jukić as the symbolic and cultural capital.

The author supports the thesis that the Croatian language standard has its beginning in the middle of the 18th century.

The author discusses the position of the Standard Croatian in the globalization conditions. He points out that Croatian has been standardized for over a century according to very clear principles of normalization, that it is autonomous, poli-functional and stable. It is also specific in that it had no stare support but it was formed by the will and efforts of its users and creative writers.

According to the recently published final version of the Jesuit educational system, Ratio Studiorum, Academia linguae illyricae at the Roman college, then the highest church university (the present-day Gregoriana) was founded in December 1599. The Academy was entrusted to Bartol Kašić, the first teacher or lector, who immediately started teaching Croatian and putting together the first grammar, Institutiones linguae illyricae, published in 1604. The Academy and Kašić lay the foundation of the standardization of Croatian and the grammar became a model for later grammarians.

In the period of totalitarianism Slavic languages were especially affected by the phenomenon that G. Orwell (1984) named newspeak. lt is characterized by the so called empty words, semantic black holes and semantic inflation. This resulted in the semantic devaluation of the public language, primarily in the field of political discourse, and thereby also in the relativization of the literary language form. Seeing a general decline of language culture in all Slavic countries, linguists and literary scholars warn that this decline has not been stopped by the social changes in the early 90s. The confirmation of this fact is found in the reappearance of new speak in the first post-totalitarian years. In this context the situation of the Croatian standard is being considered.

Unlike Italian or French, heirs of the rich Latin theological and cultural terms, Croatian of the early Middle Ages was a barbarous language spoken by a number of tribes which converted to Christianity to become a kingdom and a nation. So the new religion was obliged to coin many terms for ecclesiastic use as the mass in Croatia was celebrated in Old Slavic, not in Latin which was not commonly understood. This started a rivalry between Latin and Old Slavic in the area of theology and liturgy, which ended in the 15th e. with the victory of Latin, and the Old Slavic mass was driven out of the coastal cities to rural areas.
