Onkraj nauka kršćanskoga: Austrijski katekizam u hrvatskoj književnoj kulturi 18. stoljeća i Kantova misao prosvjetiteljstva

Onkraj nauka kršćanskoga: Austrijski katekizam u hrvatskoj književnoj kulturi 18. stoljeća i Kantova misao prosvjetiteljstva

Author(s): Željko Senković,Ivana Mikulić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 03/155/2019

Croatian literary culture of the 18th century is marked by stylistic pluralism, considering that its Enlightenment character and its didactic (educational, moralistic and Catholic) and utilitaristic dimensions are emphasized the most. Austrian catechism was the fundamental book of school religious education from 1777 until 1847 in the whole Habsburg Monarchy, and it played an important role in the upbringing of children, but also of the entire family and social community in the spirit of Josephine politics. This topic is viewed from the perspective of Immanuel Kant who found it important to emphasise the dangers to which the fetishisation of ecclesiastical norms can lead to, i.e. to hinder the development of critical moments of liberty and upbringing. The absence of Enlightenment period in Croatian countries of the Habsburg Monarchy is complexly conditioned: from religious resistance and changes in a social and political sense to stagnancy and lack of education of a large part of the population, altogether favourable to the Croatian nobility and clergy.

Zašto možemo govoriti o posebnom hrvatskom književnom jeziku

Author(s): Petar Guberina / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 5/1996

For reasons of its topicality and the good solutions offered, we are reprinting the "Treatise on Standard Croatian" by Petar Guberina, published in 1940 in his book, co-authored by Kruno Krstic. Differences Between Standard Croatian and Serbian. Using F. de Saussure’s structuralist and Ch. Bally's stylistic methods, the author argues the autonomy of Standard Croatian. He emphasizes that, in evaluating standard-language phenomena, the various levels should be respected approaching the phenomena from synchronic, standard-language and stylistic viewpoints. Diachrony, dialectology and any other standard language, however close, must be disregarded. Since language practice can use the units from various systems, the author underlines the importance of the stylistic values of such phenomena. Frequently, a stylistic system does not produce identical stylistic values, which makes the stylistic level exceptionally important, a fact often neglected thus far.

Znanstvena podloga hrvatskih vukovaca

Znanstvena podloga hrvatskih vukovaca

Author(s): Stjepan Babić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 5/1995

In late 19th century, the Vukovci (followers of Vuk Karadžić) attempted to redirect Standard Croatian in conformity with the views of Serbian linguist Vuk S. Karadžić. In this they were successful to a certain extent, that is in the areas of natural inclination of Standard Croatian and these of a still present vacillation In its main body, however, Standard Croatian stayed within its separate course. In the view of many. the reason for these attempts by the Croatian Vukovci had their roots in politics T he author demonstrates that a major reason were also the scientific views of the time, with the prevalence of Neogrammarian School and the priority it gave to the spoken language and dialectal speech over the written standard.

Jezični sustav i kulturni kontekst u Sintaksi Radoslava Katičića

Jezični sustav i kulturni kontekst u Sintaksi Radoslava Katičića

Author(s): Mislav Ježić / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1-2/1988

Katičić's Syntax is based on a representative corpus selected from the Croatian literary text, the humanities and journalism. lt widens the usual basis of description by including, along with the corpus of Karadžić's school, specimens from the Croatian literature based on the neo-štokavian dialect between the 1sth century and now. Thus it produces a broader range of linguistic phenomena, which need a broader and more precise linguistic model of interpretation than has been produced so far. On the other hand however, it does not review the syntactic facts from all variant idioms of standard Croatian. This is because a necessary preliminary work like this one has no precedent, and any such attempt is necessarily provisory, being more selective and prescriptive than interpretative and descriptive. The corpus is interpreted by a very coherent deductive system of grammatical rules. It is not formalized symbolically and does not reject traditional grammatical notions, but it succeeds surprisingly in building up a system of phrase structure rules (with precise sub categorization of nominal and verbal forms in their syntactic roles), of transformations of phrases into complex sentences with clause structures, and of transformations into complex sentences with non-clause structures, which result from the processes of attribution, nominalization, infinitivization, etc. The whole system is viewed under three aspects of grammatical semantic and informative sentence structures. Their interplay aptly explains many syntactic phenomena. Thus, it permits an elegant explanation of fundamental rules of word order, or allows very precise and complex semantic interpretations of syntactic structures. In the review article, this theoretical system is presented, its specific issues and accomplishments are exemplified, some technical objections are put forward, basic parallels with the generative grammar are discussed. Finally, some generalizations of the model are proposed, which nevertheless indirectly bear witness to its fruitfulness.
