This paper deals with the dichotomy of address system in Serbo-Croatian, namely the pattern of this system in the Sarajevo region. Research has been done on the use of T and V (singular) pronouns of address and the factors governing their usage. In collecting data questionnaire as well as personal observation have been used. In spite of the deficiency of this method some conclusions have been drawn referring to the most frequent usage pattern of these two pronouns. Although no generalization could be made, the basic functioning of the two pronouns of address are described.

Proučavajući sadašnje stanje romanskih posuđenica u feljtonima Slobodne Dalmacije pisanim u dijalektu u razdoblju od pet godina (1965— 1969), zabilježila sam i protumačila Oko 2000 romanizama, i to uglavnom talijanskog (mletačkog i tršćanskog) porijekla.

A lexical layer of Njegoš’s vocabulary in »Lažni car Šćepan Mali« — Romance expressions — is analyzed in the paper. It has been concluded that there are not many Romance expressions, about 50; that they have been unevenly distributed in the work (the majority of them are in Dejstvije I (First Act), and then their number decreases); that they are almost all irreplaceable; that Italian expressions are prevalent among the Romance expressions over the Latinisms and Gallicisms.

This article deals with the functional features of riddles and proverbs. The author aims to show how these features relate to their linguistic characteristics. It is argued that in proverbs the words are used in their literal meaning while the whole proverb is used figuratively. The use of rhyme is also more typical of proverbs than of riddles. On the other hand, riddles represent a more suitable framework for the creation of new words. Words with unknown meanings are never used in proverbs but are quite common in riddles. In both proverbs and riddles it is possible to find words whose use is highly restricted to the context of one particular riddle or proverb.

This short article deals with those foreign words in the ekavian variant of Serbo-Croat which have been integrated into the dictionary taut have undergone the process of ekavisation by which the original phoneme (i) was replaced by (e). The author claims that such examples as inekcija (injekcija), cerada (cirada), lemuzina (limuzina), cementa (cimenta), koleba (koliba) did not result from any accidental change of one phoneme into another.

The author addresses several complex problems that arise with respect to complex relationship between Standard Serbo Croat and its present-day dialects. It is argued that various vernaculars permeate the standard Serbo Croat and that, varieties within the standard must not be any barrier to the change or modification within the standard Serbo Croat itself. It goes without saying that any language can only benefit from the richness and variety of its dialects, while any intolerance of the influence of the dialects upon the standard language will result in stagnation.

This work represents an attempt to give typological characteristics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a multilingual and multinational union of states. The first part of this paper contains definitions of the category of developed state-formations of multilingual and multinational (or at least multiethnic) character. By separating this category from similar but complex and undeveloped state-formations (typical of Africa) as well as from such state nations having to deal with language and national status of their minorities, it has been established that the above mentioned category comprises such countries as: the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, USSR, Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, India and formerly Austria- Hungary. The second part of this paper is concerned with the establishment of the criteria for the typological description of the mentioned category as well as with the classification of (socio) linguistic phenomena related to it. These criteria w ere based upon the ten following questions: 1. does the territorial division coincide globally with the linguistic and(or) ethnic one, 2. are standard languages in question the principal polyfunctional linguistic instruments on their respective territories, 3. can the speakers of such standard languages be considered as forming a fully developed nations, 4. is the community involved multilingual or bilingual, 5. do the languages involved cross to a large extent the frontiers of the state-formation, 6. do the dialectal bases underlying the standard languages have the common background, 7. do standard languages make possible for their users to share the same civilization and cultural contexts, 8. is it possible to detect in the standard language any trace of the colonial linguistic heritage, 9. is any of the standard languages in the state community considered to be a privileged one, and 10. can the great majority of people in the community actually speak the major language. The above mentioned questions were first supplied with the answers pertaining only to Yugoslavia. The further step was to compare other countries from the same category with Yugoslavia and the result of such comparison was very much in favor of Yugoslavia. Finally, the comparison was made between Yugoslavia and Austria-Hungary the latter serving only as a control-sample. The last part of this paper deals with the specific features of Yugoslavia considering the complex linguistic situation on the territory where Serbo-Croat is spoken and which is the common language of Serbs, Croats, Montenegrins and Moslems (in Bosnia and Herzegovina). The last part also contains two possible interpretations of the term »Yugoslavian languages« which cannot be grounded on any either genetic or typological linguistic feature, but which can be, from a sociolinguistic point of view, justified as a legitimate term.

In the region extending from the Croatian-Slovenian border on the northwest to the Serbian borders with Macedonia and Bulgaria on the southeast, a range of South Slavic dialects in spoken. These are grouped by Slavicists into a number of dialect groups forming the close genetic-linguistic unity referred to as the Croato-Serbian language or, entirely synonymously, as the Serbo-Croatian language. These are not the happiest of terms, for several reasons. But since there are no better ones, or at least none name the language in this sense, whether we are thinking of it as a descendant of the Proto-Slavic or Proto-Indo-European language, or as one of the (Balto) Slavic, (West) South Slavic, (Central) European, Balkan, or Mediterranean languages, for it is in fact all of these. In light of this fact we can simply refer to the standard language which has developed on the basis of the Croat-Serbian linguistic sources as Croat-Serbian (or, it goes without saying, by the completely synonymous term Serbo-Croatian), without regard to which manifest variant it appears as. But owing to its various traditions, and to the different possible focuses of attention in specific contexts, the use of other terms for the standard language may be justified, particularly if not in a strict terminological sense. There have been persistent demands recently for the terms Serbo-Croatian and Croat-Serbian to be adopted or prescribed as the only possible, the only justified, the only allowable, or suchlike terms. This only gives rise to needless suspicions and speculations as to the motives for such insistence, while the real questions relevant to the science of language and language culture remain unilluminated.

The phenomenon of variant dissemination of standard language has drawn a greter and greater attention of the researchers in recent times. It is manifested in the parallel existence of two or more variants of a single standard language, as its differentiated uses in different socio-cultural and national environments. Certain correlation between the national and the variant has been observed in this respect, which led to determining the standard language variant according to the national character of the given environment. The paper analyzes the national-variant relation, in the light of recent research of numerous instances of standard language variants. It criticizes as groundless the isomorphism of the national regarding the variant, especially in respect of the existing definition of a variant and underlines the need for reconsideration and revaluation of this definition. In this respect, the author stresses three essential constitutive factors of the formation of standard language variants, regardless of their manifesting manner: the factor of territorial detachment, the factor of the composition of the given socio-cultural environment and the factor of being conditioned by communication. The fundamental notion is that of the socio-cultural environment which allows the satisfactory manner of defining the standard language variant in the entirety of its manifesting forms.
