Из диалектологического архива: польская диалектная речь жителей окрестностей Бражуоле (Тракайский район, 1992 г.)

Author(s): Elena Konickaja / Language(s): Russian Issue: -/2014

The article provides dialectological recordings of Polish (the so-called polszczyznа kresowа) from the Trakai region, specifically Bražuolė and its surroundings, made during the expeditions in the 1990’s organized by the Department of Slavic Philology at Vilnius University. The Polish recordings are from an areal characterized sociolinguistically by the interface of four languages: the Polish dialect, Belarusian (po-prostu), Russian, and Lithuanian. These recordings reflect crucial and previously unidentified features of the sociolinguistic environment, as well as constitute historical evidence of language contact in Bražuolė and its surroundings. The data presented in the article can be used for further work on the history of language contacts in Lithuania.

Author(s): Liudmila Pavlovna Garbulj / Language(s): Russian Issue: -/2017

This article deals with the twofold role of written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (the chancery language and the “prostaja mova“) in inter-Slavonic, mainly Polish-Russian language contacts, studied on the materials of the diplomatic correspondence of Mucsovy. This study summarizes the research data proving that the written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania played the role of an active mediator in the 15–17th centuries in Polish-Russian language contacts and was a source of lexical and semantic borrowings in the Russian written language. What is more, the article examines anew the exposed lexical and semantic borrowings from the written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Russian Chancery language of the 17th century.

The comparative study of languages with various degree of relation is a linguistic subject that would always be relevant. Foreign language knowledge is an essential requirement for the deep analysis of a native language against the backdrop of an extensive palette of lexical phenomena. Foreign language learning in its own right is closely connected with the theory and practice of translation, and therefore, as a number of scholars have duly observed, the attribute of translatability could be included as a prerequisite for interlinguistic comparison. The interest in the contrastive study of vocabulary most certainly indicates a confirmed interest in translation and the practice of translation. Among the noteworthy linguistic situations in view of translation, there are those with discernible degree of sign expression. The contrastive analysis of such examples provides us with valuable information.

ПАДЕЖИ И ПРЕДЛОШКО-ПАДЕЖНЕ КОНСТРУКЦИЈЕ СА СПАЦИЈАЛНИМ ЗНАЧЕЊЕМ У "РОМАНУ О ТРОЈИ"

Author(s): Aleksandra D. Rakić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 73/2020

The subject of this paper is the analysis of syntactic-semantic characteristics of case structures for expressing spatial meaning in The novel about Troy, with the aim of determining the inventory and frequency of certain structures. In this study the text of the novel from a Cyrillic manuscript of the Sofia National Library (No. 381, Proceedings 771) published by Allan Ringheim (1951) was used. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the spatiality in The novel about Troy is expressed by means of virtually identical constructions as in other texts written in the lower style of the Serbian recension of Old Slavonic language. Our corpus shows that two changes in the case system occurred in the history of the Serbian language: substitution of structures without preposition with prepositional case structures and reduction in the number of case structures.

Ali-dede Bošnjak o porijeklu arapskog jezika (prema djelu Muḥāḍara al-ʼawāʼil wa musāmara al-ʼawāḫir)

Author(s): Berin Bajrić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 70/2021

In his famous work Muḥāḍara al-ʼawāʼil wa musāmara al-ʼawāḫir, Ali-dede Bosniak pays considerable attention to cultural and historical topics such as art, language, literature, interpersonal relations and customs. At the very beginning of his work, Ali-dede explores the question of the origin and character of human language, paying special attention to Arabic language, considering it a primordial, divine and fundamental language of humanity. His considerations are focused on the question of the origin and status of Arabic language, as well as on its historical or diachronic development. The much talked about period is the time before the influence of Arabic poetry and the Qur’an, which goes far back in time and where it is difficult to discern what is truth and what is a myth. To make it easier to present, analyze and understand Ali-dede’s idea of the origin and importance of Arabic language, we will try to present it through several basic questions that this author considers in his work.

Novotvary a internacionalismy v češtině v období pandemie covid-19

Author(s): Gabriela ENTLOVÁ / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2022

The paper represents a brief inquiry into the occurrence of neologisms, borrowings and international terms used in the Czech language, strictly bound by the contemporary covid-19 pandemic events. The employed examples include both, older borrowings, fully domesticated in Czech, as well as the new ones, not yet recorded in any of the reliable printed Czech dictionaries. It focuses mainly on borrowings of Greco-Latin adstrate but also on loanwords of Romance origin, Anglicisms and, to a limited extent, loanwords of German origin in Czech. In addition, a small number of examples is represented by the terms of Slavic and Old Czech origin. The article outlines how the currently used lexical units from different source languages function in the Czech language and their level of adaptation to the Czech orthographic, phonological and morphological systems including some of their semantic peculiarities.

Shigeaki Sugeta. Manuale di Linguistica Romanza (Romance Gengogaku Gairon) Tokyo: Waseda University Press, 2019, viii + 243pp.

Author(s): Yusuke Kanazawa / Language(s): Italian Issue: 16/2021

Morphological and syntactical aspects of Romanian/ English codeswitching

Morphological and syntactical aspects of Romanian/ English codeswitching

Author(s): Arina Greavu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This paper examines the grammatical structure of Romanian/ English codeswitching in the speech of a ten-year-old bilingual child. The analyzed data set consists of single-word switches and phrases, the main focus of the paper being the morphological integration of these English elements in Romanian and the relations they establish with their larger syntactic environment. Using the principles of the Matrix Language Frame model developed by Myers-Scotton (2002, 2006), we show that the structural integrity of Romanian is maintained during codeswitching, and that the English material is used according to the rules imposed by the Romanian grammar. Although Romanian inflectional morphology is often absent on switched words and phrases, the placement of these elements in the grammatical frame of the sentence follows matrix language specifications and word order; moreover, function words in mixed constituents, such as determiners and prepositions, tend to come from Romanian.

JAPANESE PROVERBS BETWEEN EQUIVALENCE AND COMPARATIVE TRANSLATION FROM JAPANESE AND ENGLISH INTO ROMANIAN. AN ANALYSIS FROM THE SEMANTIC AND PRAGMATIC POINT OF VIEW

JAPANESE PROVERBS BETWEEN EQUIVALENCE AND COMPARATIVE TRANSLATION FROM JAPANESE AND ENGLISH INTO ROMANIAN. AN ANALYSIS FROM THE SEMANTIC AND PRAGMATIC POINT OF VIEW

Author(s): Oana Florina Avornicesei / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

The current paper takes a comparative look at a selection of Japanese proverbs and their translation into English to their Romanian equivalents. The English translation belongs to David Galeff, the author of the book ‘Japanese Proverbs. Wit and Wisdom’ from which stems the selection of proverbs which are the object of the current analysis. The Romanian translation applies two methods. It tries to find an equivalent in Romanian, both in terms of wit i.e. wording or sense and in terms of wisdom i.e. meaning or reference. As such the two perspectives of analysis are semantic and pragmatic. The aim is firstly to find an equivalent in meaning and reference to a relevant wisdom inspired by reality and life. If such an equivalent is not found, alternative translations are attempted using other translation procedures, such as modulation or even adaptation. The theoretical framework used is the one Vinay and Dalbernet outlined in their ‘Comparative Stylistics of French and English: A Methodology for Translation’. This is a translational attempt to look towards the East and towards the West and see how different and how similar they are in the way they understand life and express that understanding. The aim of the analysis is to see to what extent it can identify corresponding ways of wording or equivalent forms of expression in Romanian for the wit and the wisdom incapsulated in the Japanese proverbs, via the English language.
